Chapter 5: Snakes in the Grass

On the Island of Themyscira, in the Gardens of Persephone...

Alkyone was fuming as she stomped her way through the Gardens of Persephone, heedless of how many innocent flowers she left crushed in her destructive wake.

She knew Oenone would be horrified by the pointless destruction of her precious plants, but at this particular moment in time, or any other moment in time for that matter, Alkyone could care less about her fellow Amazons feelings.

Only one Amazon's feelings mattered to her right now and that was her own, she was furious and senseless destruction was the only thing that soothed the raging inferno in her heart, so many eviscerated attack dummies in the Training Grounds of Athena over the years could vouch for that fact.

Less than an hour ago, she and Hippolyta had been enjoying a lovely sparing session with each other in the palace courtyard, to Alkyone, the sounds of swords clashing was a heavenly choir and her queen never looked more regal or more beautiful than when she was in the midst of battle, a warrior queen born to rule and bring death to Man's World with her valiant captain by her side.

But then, the queen's handmaiden Cydippe had intruded on their match and she brought the royal children with her, which resulted in her queen abruptly ending their duel. "You can see I am in demand, Alkyone, excuse me sister." Then without even waiting for her to respond, Hippolyta turned and rushed over to the healer with what could only be called maternal urgency, leaving Alkyone standing alone in the courtyard with an unfamiliar feeling of defeat, in spite of the fact she had actually won their last round.

That personal feeling of triumph that had so briefly enjoyed turned bitter in her mouth as she realised that last round was indeed their last round today.

So, skulking off to be alone with her bitter thoughts, she had taken a long walk through the palace garden's, in the vein hope it would help improve her foul mood, only for it to worsen when she heard the distinctive sound of children laughing and playing not too far away.

Then a familiar voice that was music to the bald woman's ears rang out over the walls of foliage, clear and laughing in apparent amusement. "No, no Kal, those roses have sharp thorns, you don't want to cut yourself on them, do you my Little Falling Star?"

Alkyone's brief besotted smile turned back into a harsh scowl when she heard her queen refer to her… son, by the sickeningly affectionate nickname she was so fond of saying, even in front of her fellow Amazons, as disgraceful as that was for a warrior queen to do such a thing.

Despite her disgust though, Alkyone kept her own thoughts and feelings on the matter to herself, she knew it was just all part of the act that Hera commanded the queen play before their sisters, the same act they all had to play now for appearances sake, she refused to actually believe her queen really… loved the boy.

Her harsh scowl turned hatefully when she heard the voice of the boy wail through the bushes, still so young that the child was unable to form coherent words at this point, but Alkyone was still able to make out the general sentiment just fine. The child wanted to touch the flowers; sharp thorns be damned.

Alkyone wanted nothing more than for that wretched little creature to cut itself on the sharp thorns and bleed out, turning the garden's green grass red with its life blood, but the Sisters of Fate, it seemed, had other plans for the boy, as she heard Hippolyta say in a half-hearted tone of admonishment. "No, no, that's enough of that Kal, we are going back to join your sister and Krypto now, okay?"

Despite knowing better, Alkyone peeked around the bush just as her queen had turned to leave, the captain's curiosity was too strong to ignore for her own good sometimes.

Hippolyta hadn't seen her as she walked away, but the boy definitely had, his young face peaking over the queen's shoulder and with some indignation, Alkyone realized for the first time that with his tuft of raven hair pressed up against her beloved ruler's midnight black mane, the child did indeed look as if he could have been born from the queens own body.

Such an unpleasant thought made the captain want to wretch all over the garden's beautiful roses.

The boy, who all the Amazons on the island, Alkyone herself included, now had to pretend was their precious little prince, continued to stare at her over the queen's shoulder with surprising intensity, his blue eyes which always seemed to glow in certain light, focusing on her and her alone as he suddenly became quiet in his mother's arms.

It disturbed the captain more than she liked to let on, no child, especially one so young should be so aware of their surroundings, so alert for potential threats and yet this little Demigodling had spotted her hiding in the bushes like a Nemean Lioness hunting her prey.

Stalking around the garden, moving quietly through the foliage, parallel to her queen's pace, Alkyone followed her to a more open part of the palace gardens, dominated by a large, beautifully designed water fountain and a couple of stone seating benches around it where the princess and the boys pet Wolfdog pup were playing a game of fetch.

Hippolyta called to them both as she placed the boy down in the garden grass and his pup immediately dropped the fetching stick, he had been carrying in his mouth and raced over to the boy who welcomed him with a glad giggle.

Princess Diana meanwhile rushed to embrace her mother who picked up into her arms with a loving laugh, the pair of mother and daughter than watched as the boy and his dog rolled around each other playfully in the grass.

Hippolyta then turned to talk to her daughter, who listened to everything her mother was saying with rapt fascination, Alkyone on the other hand, didn't hear any of what her queen was saying, she was too focused on the daughter instead of the mother for once

Even from such a young age, it was clear to anyone who saw her that the princess would grow up into a truly beautiful women one day, just like her mother who she so greatly resembled, what else could be expected of a queen's daughter and what's more of an Amazon created by the hands of the very Goddesses themselves.

But in that moment, Alkyone held her breath as she was suddenly struck by the young girls already blossoming beauty, with the shining sunlight illuminating her delicately shaped face, her eyes clear and blue like her mothers, her tanned skin and growing athelitic build were very eye catching.

The lines of her cheekbones overshadowed even the narrowness of Alkyone lover Phinea's and the lustre of her black hair could rival even Hippolyta's magnificent mane, and Hippolyta's long raven hair was one of the things the circle captain loved best about her queen.

One day princess, one day, she thought in angered arousal, Diana wouldn't be a little girl forever, when the princess finally came of age, the queen's daughter would need a worthy warrior to make a true Amazon woman out of her and who was more worthy than she, Alkyone, Captain of the Queen's Circle and her mother's most loyal sister, she had no doubt Hippolyta would agree to it after all her years of loyal service.

But first, I must win the mother before I can demand the daughter, I deserve nothing less than both a queen and a princess…

It was then that an ominous hissing noise caught the captain's attention, two hissing noises in fact, Alkyone looked down and just a few feet away from where the Demigodling and his pup were playing, slowly slithering through the garden grass was an golden Amphisbaena Serpent, a very, very venomous species of snake native to Themyscira about size of a Horned Viper with golden scales with blue stripes running down its long body as well as a second head sprouting out from where its tail should be, just as venomous as the first one.

Alkyone knew its venom was lethal, very lethal in fact, she had seen her circle sister Philomela dip her arrows in vials of it before taking aim at Barbarians in past battles, she had seen it kill grown men in seconds.

A boy, who was still barely a babe, she imagined, would take even less time to succumb.

The Captain of the Queen's Circle shouted no word of warning or raised any alarm for the small family who remained completely unaware of the approaching, venomous threat. Instead, she just watched with barely concealed anticipation as the two headed serpents slithered ever closer towards the unexpecting child and his mongrel pet.

This could work, one venomous bite from either of the Amphisbaena heads and the boy would die like he should have done at her hand's so many months ago, her queen and princess would both be distraught at the death of their pet Demigodling, but they would get over it in time and she would be there to make sure of it.

Blissfully, for all the Demigodling's usual alertness to his surroundings, the boy and his dog remained seemingly unaware of the ever-approaching reptile and continued playing together in the garden grass.

Just a little closer…

But then, the two headed Vipers bypassed the boy and pup completely and instead slithered straight for the princess and the queen.

Alkyone had been focused solely on the boy and his pet, so she did not see her queen walking towards the both of them with the princess in her arms, Hippolyta meanwhile was so busy talking to her daughter that when she finally heard the horrifying hissing noise, it was too late.

The princess let out terrified scream as she saw the Viper, Hippolyta saw it to and moved to protect her daughter with her own body as the serpent coiled up one its heads in preparation for its venomous strike.

Alkyone pulled out her sword from it's sheathe, preparing to charge through the bushes and cut that damned serpent in half, despite knowing she would never get there in time to stop its attack.

But just as one of the Amphisbaena's heads lunged fangs first towards the queen's exposed leg, something happened, something so fast her eye couldn't even catch it.

The Viper missed its target entirely as it was suddenly pulled backwards, away from the queen and the princess, hissing in anger, the Amphisbaena's attacking head quickly spun back around, ready to sink its venomous fangs into whatever had grabbed a hold of its other head.

Only for something to stop it in mid lunge.

For a moment, all was silent in the palace gardens, save for the furious hissing of the doubled headed struggling serpent, Hippolyta and her daughter Diana stared in a combination of surprise and relief while Alkyone sunk back into the bushes, glaring in a combination of shock and dismay.

What was the cause of all these conflicting feelings?

Simple, the boy had grabbed a hold of the Amphisbaena Viper and now held each of the double headed serpent's scaly throats in a fiercely tight grip in his small palms.

The boy remained surprisingly calm as the two heads of the Amphisbaena hissed and opened their fang filled mouths at him, in a fruitless attempt into getting him to release them from his hold, instead, in a shocking show of strength, the child raised the squirming Viper up above his head and hurled the large, limbless reptile towards the other end of the garden, both heads of Amphisbaena hissed as its long body sailed through the air before landing on the hard stone walkway with a painful thud.

The silence was finally broken as Krypto bound forward and growled with more savagery than any puppy should possess at the two headed serpents as it retreated with a defeated hiss into the bushes to lick its wounds.

After struggling out of her mother's stunned grasp, Diana immediately rushed over and picked up the puppy, who immediately stopped it's growling and began affectionately licking the girl's face instead.

Hippolyta meanwhile went straight to her son who greeted her with an enthusiastic cry of joy as he was lifted up into her arms. "My Little Fallingstar."

Alkyone watched from the bushes as Hippolyta brought the boy close to her beautiful face and began heaping underserving praise onto him while Diana, still holding onto the boy's wriggling mongrel in her small arms, walked back over to her mother and joined her in on the seemingly endless praising her little brother was unrightfully receiving.

No longer being able to stomach what she was seeing anymore, Alkyone stepped away from the bushes quietly, going completely unnoticed by her queen and her princess who were both currently too busy fawning over the boy's brave act, as though he had done it on purpose.

Stalking away from the sickening scene, now in an even fouler mood than before, something she did not think was even possible, Alkyone stopped suddenly when she heard the familiar hiss of the Amphisbaena as it slithered across the stone garden path back into the wild woods right in front of her.

Stomping forward, the Viper felt her coming and raised both heads on either end of its body up in order to attack her, venom dripping from fang filled mouths, but this time, she was too fast and with a quick slash of her sword, cut the limbless reptile down the middle of its scaly body.

Flopping flat to the stone ground, dying in a pool of its own blood and venom, Alkyone left the two separated halves of Amphisbaena to suffer a slow death as she walked away from the palace gardens, somewhat satiated by her slaughtering of the serpent…

… but still annoyed as the two headed snake was not the real vile beast that she wanted to kill at that moment…
