Chapter 11: Dreaded Revelations

On the Island of Themyscira, in the middle of the Palace Courtyard…

Hippolyta had been dreading this day for some time now, pun definitely not intended.

The day when other members of the Greek Pantheon would eventually find out about the secret weapon the Hera had given to her Amazonian worshippers ten years ago, when they would finally discover the great gift the Queen of the Heavens had given them, but specifically to her.

She and her councillors knew that it was an inevitability, that they could not possibly keep it a secret forever and although it had been a while now, longer than usual in fact, they all knew it was only a matter of time before one of the Olympians, eventually decided to visit their island again for one reason or another, Hippolyta expected Hera had something to do with that.

But still, the Queen of the Amazons had been hoping for just a little more time, praying to the Sisters of Fate for… something to prevent this dreaded revelation from happening here and now.

But it would seem her prays had gone unheard, that time had finally run out for their sisterhood and Hippolyta now feared that today would be that dreaded day.

But still, of all the Greek Gods and Goddess that could show upon this day, from Athena to Ares, from Artemis to Aphrodite, the last one she expected to see was Persephone, the Queen of the Underworld herself.

The Spring Goddess had arrived suddenly and completely unannounced before them, literally sprouting up from between the cracks in the palace courtyard via a giant tangle of vines before descending down them like a flight of stairs in a leafy green dress, putting on quite a show for the shocked crowd of gathered Amazons.

To say Persephone was an attractive women would be a complete understatement, Hippolyta knew that to be true, the Queen of the Underworld was an ethereal beauty, especially with how she saw some of her sisters were staring at the Spring Goddess with obvious desire in their eyes.

The Goddess of Spring existed in a seemingly near constant state of youth and vitality, her gorgeous face was framed by lovely locks of long wheat blonde hair,, forest green eyes, a heart shaped face, pale skin, and a very curvaceous figure, which was complimented by a pair of wonderfully long trim legs, which lead to a pair of wide womanly hips and finally, a buxom chest that Hippolyta had to admit, was proving very hard not to stare at.

It was easy for anyone to see why Hades had chosen her as his consort over so many other Greek Goddesses and why so many ancient Greek historians claimed her beauty could even rival that of Aphrodite's, not that anyone would dare say such a thing in the Goddess of Love and War's presence, however, not if they knew what was good for them.

The moment the Daughter of Demeter had stepped foot onto the hard stone of the palace courtyard however, the shock of her sudden appearance had worn off as Persephone immediately demanded an audience with her. As was often the way with both Greek Gods and Goddesses alike, most of them simply did not bother to schedule meetings with their worshippers when they wanted something, and her sisterhood was no exception in that regard.

As she and her Amazons approached, for a brief, terrifying moment, Hippolyta thought the Spring Goddess had come to inform them that Hercules and his Barbarian horde had escaped from the Underworld and were already on their way to Themyscira.

In that moment, the Queen of the Amazons felt her heart be consumed with an overwhelming fear, because deep down, Hippolyta knew that they weren't ready, they weren't even close to being ready yet.

But fortunately for the Amazon Queen and her sisters, that was not the case, as it turns out, a fearsome beast had indeed escaped from the Underworld, but it wasn't the beast that she was worried about.

Still, when Persephone told them exactly WHO it was that had escaped from the Underworld and had made their way to their island, Hippolyta, and all of her sisters where still shocked to say the least.

"Here?" Hippolyta asked, completely dumbfounded by this unexpected information. "Why would the Guardians of the Underworld come here?"

"I'm not sure, but as of late, something has definitely been drawing Cerberus and his brothers to your island, and for some time now, the three of them have been howling up at the surface on and off for about a week." Persephone explained to the crowd of gathered Amazons. "I was actually planning to come see and your sisters about this tomorrow, Hippolyta, to ask you what the cause of their curiosity might be when Hypnos informed me that the three of them had left the Underworld earlier today."

"But Queen Persephone, I don't understand, how could the Hounds of Hades simply escape from their chains and leave their post without anyone noticing, surely such a breakout would have immediately set off alarms?" Mnemosyne asked, the island's head historian was just as confused as the rest of fellow Amazons, in all of her years archiving the history of the Greek World, she had never heard of such an incident happening before now.

"Contrary to popular belief Mnemosyne, my husband and I don't keep Cerberus, Notch and Spot chained to the one single spot in front of the Gates of the Underworld all the time." Persephone said, looking a little annoyed by the historian's presumptions, which Hippolyta recognised was not a good sign for how this divine meeting was going. "That would just be cruel, there are our guardians, not our slaves, outside of our house, we allow them to do as they like and let them have free reign of the Underworld as they please, but they usually do not leave our realm without permission first."

"Really? Perhaps the King of the Underworld needs to look into getting a better pet monster to guard his realm for him then." Alkyone muttered in an annoyed tone, the Underworld Goddess's arrival had interrupted her sparing session with her sisters, putting the circle captain in an even fouler mood than usual.

At this clearly unkind remark towards her and her husband's loyal pets, Persephone shot Alkyone an angry look that quickly morphed into a mocking grin. "Why Alkyone, I didn't realise you'd be willing to offer your services to us, though for what it's worth, you are certainly scary enough to send even the most terrifying monsters running back into the dark depths of Tartarus, my dear captain."

The Captain of the Queen's Circle face became red with rage at the perceived insult, but before Alkyone could respond, Hippolyta quickly stepped back in to hopefully diffuse this escalating situation. "Please pardon my circle captain your majesty, but back to the reason you are here, do you have any idea as to why Cerberus and his brothers have come to our island Persephone?"

"No Hippolyta, I don't and that is exactly what I've come to Themyscira to find out." Persephone said with narrowed eyes and a suspicious glare on her beautiful face, Hippolyta was instantly reminded of exactly why Demeter's daughter was also called the Iron Queen, it was because of that cold, unflinching gaze of hers that could send even most renegade of souls running back into the River Styx with but a single glance.

"So, tell me, ladies." Persephone growled out each word with authority, the kind of authority that could only come with the power of being not only a Greek Goddess of Mount Olympus, but a Queen of the Underworld as well. "Has anything on Themyscira… changed in recent years? Anything or anyone whose presence might be enough to draw my Giant Three Headed Hellhound away from there den?"

Taken aback by the sheer directness of the Spring Goddess's question, Hippolyta knew she and her fellow Amazons could never hope to give a satisfactory answer, for they all knew only ONE significant change had occurred on Themyscira in recent years, and yet, none of them wanted to be the one to tell Persephone exactly what... or rather... WHO it was...

"No Persephone." Hippolyta said rather unconvincingly, hoping this simple answer would be enough to satisfy the intimidating Spring Goddess. "Nothing has changed here, at least… nothing important."

The Iron Queen kept her dreadfully, suspicious glare on Hippolyta and the other assembled Amazons for an uncomfortably long time, her cold gaze clearly portraying that she did not believe her for even a second before the Spring Goddess finally decided to speak again.

"Nothing important huh…" Persephone repeated dryly while raising a single elegant eyebrow at the Amazon Queen and Hippolyta mentally kicked herself for her choice of words, which had obviously made Persephone even more suspicious of them than she already was, the Spring Goddess gave their tropical surroundings a slow once over, as if looking for something out of the ordinary, before settling her green-eyed gaze back on the gathered Amazons and their leader.

"You know Hippolyta, it's funny, when you say things like that, I can't help but get the feeling that you all might be trying to hide something from me." Persephone said as she cast her gaze over the assembled Amazons, the Spring Goddess spoke calmly and politely, but there was a clear undertone of anger in her voice that was not lost on Hippolyta as she realised that this surprise meeting might have just taken a turn for the worst.

"Queen Persephone, I-." Hippolyta quickly tried to speak, tried to explain, but found herself forced into silence again as the Spring Goddess gave a low laugh, her head shaking in a disapproving manner as she closed her eyes.

When she opened them again, Hippolyta and her fellow Amazons, even the usually fearless Alkyone and her circle sisters, all visibly paled as Persephone's green eyes were now glowing an eerie ethereal emerald. "You would think after what my husband and I did to Sisyphus the Sly for all the smartass stunts he pulled; that people would know better by now than to try and lie straight to my face." The Spring Goddess said with another low humourless chuckle.

It was then that the Amazons all felt the ground beneath their feet begin to shake ever so slightly, causing them all flinch in fear as they were sure that the entire palace courtyard was about to be swallowed up by the earth and that Persephone was going to send them all straight to the darkest depths of the Underworld.

But then it stopped, and Spring Goddess eyes ceased glowing almost as abruptly.

"Though I suppose, whatever it is your hiding from me doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things, now does it ladies?" Persephone asked in a clearly rhetorical tone of voice as she watched the now alarmed Amazons try to keep their collective calm with some degree of amusement in her eyes. "As I'm sure my husband's and mine's beloved pets will return home soon enough on their accord, after they've dealt with whatever it is that has drawn them here, that is."

"Of… of course, your majesty, but still, I shall send my scouts out around the entire island searching for them." Hippolyta declared quickly, hoping to appease the now clearly angry Spring Goddess with her words. "I promise you, they will be found, Persephone."

Despite her reassuring words though, Hippolyta knew that none of her sisters were looking particularly eager to go out searching for a giant three headed beast in the dark depths of Themyscira's jungle.

"Thank you, Hippolyta, but there's really no need for that, Cerberus and his brothers are far too large to go unnoticed on Themyscira for very long and all three of them have ferocious appetites." Persephone explained with a casual wave of her hand and an ominous smile that did not put the audience of Amazons at all at ease. "Whatever it is that has lured them here, I assure you, THEY will track it down and when they do, they will de-."

HOWL!

The Spring Goddess words were interrupted by the sound of a loud howl in the distance, all eyes turned to the opened field down below the palace's courtyard just as a White Wolfdog erupted out of the jungle and raced across the open ground with desperate determination.

HHHOOOWWWLLL! HHHOOOWWWLLL! HHHOOOWWWLLL!

A few moments later, three more, far louder and more monstrous howls, were heard, followed by the crashing sound of numerous falling trees as a gigantic black Three Headed Hellhound burst through the foliage, its three huge, snarling heads tearing through the tops of trees as it stomped out onto open ground while its long-clubbed tail sent a large boulder flying away with a single absented minded swing.

While all of the Amazons of Themyscira had heard stories about the huge fearsome Hounds of Hades before, none of them had ever actually seen the beast in flesh until this day, needless to say, the tales did not do the creature's truly terrifying appearance justice at all.

With all three heads looking and sniffing the air, the colossal canine quickly regained sight of the fleeing Wolfdog and with a fearsome growl, bounded after it, its huge, pawed footsteps causing the ground to shake as it did so.

In no time at all, the Hellhound had caught up to the Wolfdog who had suddenly stopped, turned, and bared his fangs, growling as it bravely stood its ground against the larger dog as if he was trying to guard something from it, but the Hellhound's middle head merely reached over with its long neck before bending down to pick up whatever it was that the White Wolfdog was guarding within its great toothy jaws.

The Wolfdog proceed to begin barking furiously at the much larger Hellhound who simply kept his three heads and whatever it was it was holding in its middle head's mouth just out of reach.

"Krypto! Cerberus! Notch! Spot!" A young male, boyish voice called from the part of the jungle the two unique canines came from. "Here boys! Over here! Come here boys!"

At this new command, both canines turned and suddenly raced back the way they came, only stopping at the opening in the jungle the Hellhound's huge body had made as a young boy stepped into view through it.

Kal smiled as Krypto, his best friend, raced back to his side while the gigantic Three Headed Hellhound, loomed over both of them just as it did when they first encountered them an hour ago.

Only this time, there was no menace in their red eyes anymore, only wide-eyed excitement and happiness as the middle head dropped the drool covered ball down onto the boys outstretched hand while the other two heads panted happily, their single club tail wagging behind them.

"Good boy Cerberus, you and your brothers actually managed to beat Krypto to the ball this time." Kal congratulated as he petted Krypto's head in a consoling manner while also shaking the drool off the ball in his other hand. "Okay, now sit."

A loud boom was heard as the dinosaur-sized dog obeyed the boy's command without a moment's hesitation, sitting its huge hindquarters down on the ground, all three heads still panting happily at the boy before them. "Now lie down."

Once again, the colossal canine obeyed the order without delay, lying down flat in front of the child, their three furry faces now at eye level with his own. "Good, now roll over."

Barking in unison, the Three Headed Hellhound did as it was told and rolled over onto its side, exposing its soft underbelly to the boy.

As for what happened next, well…

"Who's a pack of good boys?" Kal asked affectionately as he began rubbing the colossal canine's belly in wide arcs. "Who's a friendly Three Headed Hellhound? Is it the three of you? Is it the three of you? Yes! That's right! Yes, it is!"

The boy continued his playful rubbing, much to the gigantic creature's enjoyment, even climbing up on top of the belly of the beast to do so as the black Hellhound rolled onto its back, wriggling from side to side in the grassy field, its right back leg kicking erratically at the blue sky, while its three separate tongues lolled out of their mouths in happy pants.

To say this scene would be shocking, amazing and strangely kind of adorable to anyone watching would be a complete and utter understatement, as the crowd of observing Amazons were simply to stunned to say anything at all in that moment, their queen included. Hippolyta was pretty sure she actually heard some of her sisters dropping their weapons out of pure shock, but she couldn't be sure because she couldn't take her eyes off what she was seeing.

Until finally, the lone Greek Goddess among them broke the silence with a surprisingly warm chuckle.

"Rhea Grace's, would you look at that." Persephone said in a rather wistfully tone and out of the corner of her eye, Hippolyta saw that the Queen of the Underworld was actually smiling fondly at the astonishing scene playing out before them. "You know, I cannot actually recall the last time I saw my boys being so playful with someone they just met."

"Cerberus and his brothers don't normally warm up to strangers so fast." Persephone explained to the gathered crowd of warrior women, just before her warm gaze turned suspicious again. "Though, I must admit Hippolyta, I am rather curious as to what a boy is doing on this island of Amazons, who is he and why is he here on Themyscira?"

"His name is Kal, your majesty, he's… my son." Hippolyta said before she could stop herself, immediately regretting speaking up as Persephone suddenly whirled around to face her with wide, disbelieving eyes.

"Your son?!" Persephone asked again incredulously before quickly looking back at the boy with a more critical eye than before.

"It seems things have changed around here, even more than I could have possibly imagined." Persephone said, talking as much to herself as to the Amazons around her. "Well then, ladies, I do believe it's past time I met this new… prince of yours, one on one."

Then, like the changing of the seasons, Persephone's bright green colourful outfit changed before their very eyes into a darker, more looking regal dress, one more befitting of one who held the title of Queen of the Underworld before the Spring Goddess suddenly disappeared before their very eyes in a mass tangle of vines.

Moments later, Persephone reappeared from the earth down below the courtyard, and began casually making her way over to where the boy was with the two… or rather… in this particular case… four dogs, leaving the crowd of Amazons behind, dreading what the outcome of this revelation would mean for them, for their island, for their tribe… and for their prince….

Greetings to all my fellow fanfic readers and writers, I hope you all enjoyed Superman, Son of Hippolyta Chapter 11: Dreaded Revelations, which introduces the first Greek Goddess in this story since Hera herself, Persephone, Queen of the Underworld, Daughter of Demeter, Wife of Hades and owner of Cerberus, Notch, and Spot.

Also, if you're all curious about the identifies of each of the Hellhound's induvial heads, Cerberus is the middle head, Notch is the head on the right and Spot is the head on the left, with Cerberus head is noticeably larger than other two, while Notch has big chunk missing out of his right ear that he got from a battle with an escaping Titan and Spot as his names suggests, has white spots on his snout, their names are also on their own indivuals colours which is how Kal knows them.

As for their distinct personalities, all three of the Hellhounds heads are considered brothers to each other, with the oldest being Cerberus who has the personality of a well-trained military attack dog, as such he also considered the leader or alpha of the trio. Notch is the middle brother who has the personality of a more typical aggressive guard dog, always ready for a fight, while Spot is the youngest brother and most playful of the three, basically being an overgrown puppy.

Though this chapter is rather short just like the last one, it's still very important one to the overall story as this is point where the cat gets out of the bag, so to speak. Kal's presence on Themyscira can no longer be kept secret after this upcoming encounter and soon, other Olympians will start taking notice of his existence as well, which will lead to many things to come, both good and bad…

Now onto answering the single fan question this time from all of you…

Guest: Yes and no mate, you are correct when you said it would be an Uncle John and Aunt Martha in this scenario, but I was using the Spiderman characters Uncle Ben and Aunt May from the Marvel Comics in response to another fans question.
