Chapter 13: Royal Confessions
On the Island of Themyscira, inside the Gardens of Persephone…
Persephone knew from the moment she first laid eyes on the boy, this… Son of Hippolyta's, that something was definitely going on here on this island.
The Iron Queen might not have been one of the Greek Goddesses the Amazons worshipped regularly like her mother Demeter, but she was still a member of the Olympian Pantheon, despite leaving the floating mountain that most of her kin called home so long ago to rule over the Underworld with her husband Hades.
She knew one of Hera's sordid schemes when she saw one, and the boy, as innocent as he appeared to be in all this Amazonian plotting, and she had no doubt that he truly was, still stunk of the Queen of the Heavens meddling like a Erymanthian Warthog on a hot summer's day, the two emerald encrusted silver bands around his wrists were proof enough of that, Persephone could recognise her aunt's magical craftsmanship and spell work anywhere…
…but still… she had to learn more…
"So, Prince Kal, please tell me, how long have you lived on this island?" The Goddess of Spring asked politely enough as she and the prince walked through the royal garden together with the boys Wolfdog trailing not far behind them, the sun was just starting to set in the sky above as evening approached, but it was still more than light enough for them to appreciate the beauty of the island paradise all around them.
The boy she was walking with, having been busy observing with great fascination how Persephone's mere presence in the garden seem to give the flowers and plants around them new life, glowing like gemstones in the setting sun, was briefly taken aback by the forwardness of the Spring Goddess question, but still managed to respond in a timely manner.
"All my life your majesty, I mean, I was born here after all." He answered a little awkwardly, still feeling more than a little uncomfortable being alone with a Greek Goddess, especially such a powerful and beautiful one as the Queen of the Underworld herself, though it had lessoned considerably once they had reached the gardens and Persephone had decided to unlink her arm from his.
At this expected answer, Persephone just smiled and chuckled good humouredly. "Of course, forgive me, what I meant to ask is how do you enjoy living here on Themyscira?" She clarified as they reached an orchard of Hesperides Apples, the tall trees full of gorgeous golden fruits that glinted in the setting sun.
Persephone watched with interest as the boy quickly climbed up the fruit tree with all the dexterity of a Cercopes Monkey and plucked two golden apples from its branches before jumping back down beside her and offered her one. "For you, your majesty."
"Why, thank you Prince Kal." The Goddess said gratefully as she took a bite and moaned in pleasure at the heavenly taste. "Rhea's Grace, I had forgotten just how good Hesperides Apples were." She said after swallowing her mouthful and then taking another bite, moaning again as the pair took a seat on the garden bench.
Kal however, did not take a bite out of his apple right away, only staring at his own reflection in it as he thought of an answer to Persephone's question. "It's okay, I guess, I mean it's my home and all and I love living here, but sometimes I just…" He stopped fiddling with the fruit in his hands and sighed, looking down.
The boy's noticeable pause got the Spring Goddess attention after swallowing another mouthful of fruit. "Yes?" She asked curiously.
The boy sighed again before finally taking a slow bite of his apple, but unlike the Spring Goddess beside him, the heavenly taste of divine fruit did little to improve the prince's suddenly somber mood, after swallowing down the mouthful, the boy looked up at her and Persephone was stunned by the conflicting emotions she saw behind his eyes.
Pain. Anger. Frustration. Confusion and Sorrow.
Persephone numbly took another bite of her golden fruit, but the Hesperides Apple suddenly didn't taste as good in her mouth anymore.
"I don't know, sometimes I just… I don't… feel like I belong here, Persephone." Kal said absently before suddenly realising he had just possibly made a grave mistake by speaking to a ruling Olympian without using her honorific title, his face becoming panicked. "I'm sorry, I mean Queen Perse-."
"It's quite alright, Prince Kal." The Queen of the Underworld immediately dismissed the boy's fears of harsh reprisal with a warm almost motherly smile that seemed to light up the flowering bushes behind her. "You may refer to me just as Persephone if you like, though I hope you'll grant me the same privilege and allow me to call you by your name, no need for titles like Prince or Queen between fellow royals, is there, Kal?"
Relieved and more than a little stunned by this Spring Goddess's rather laid-back attitude towards the formalities of royal titles, Kal simply nodded and gave his best bright-eyed smile. "Yes of course Queen- I mean, Persephone."
Persephone couldn't help but smile at the boy's rather endearing nature, he was simply too polite for his own good sometimes, it was strangely adorable. "Now that we've gotten that out of the way, please tell me Kal, what could possibly trouble you about living on Themyscira, it's basically paradise?"
Feeling more comfortable around the Goddess of Spring than before, Kal spoke with an honesty that he would never dare with an Amazon woman, even his mother. "Maybe for Amazons, but I'm the only boy on this whole island and one day, I'll be the only man as well, I don't really have any friends here besides my sister Diana and Krypto." At hearing these disheartened words, Krypto padded over to them and placed his large furry head in his boy's lap to comfort him.
"Most of the young Amazons don't want to be around me because they all think that boys are weird." Kal said despondently while stroking his Wolfdog's long ears. "Not that they've actually met any beside me, of course."
He still remembered the first time he had tried to hang out with his sister's friends, how many of the girls had just looked at him weirdly until he had finally gotten the message and left, particularly Artemis and her fellow young huntresses who had outright glared at him and mockingly called him Wolf Boy as he walked away with his head down.
Diana had called out to him to come back and had chastised her friends for making fun of her little brother, but he had just run faster and fled into the jungle to be alone, like always did whenever he was feeling upset.
"I just… I just feel so alone and out of place here sometimes." The boy said with another depressed sigh that would make any loving mothers' heartache… like the heart of the Spring Goddess sitting right beside him who put her arm around his shoulders, which the boy barely even noticed now.
Persephone, for her part, suddenly felt very guilty for prying into the boy's personal life in the first place and bringing up this adoscelent anguish that he hid so well behind his boyish smiles and bright blue eyes.
It was becoming clear to the Spring Goddess that the boy was shockingly good at putting on a positive appearance for the Amazons on the island, never letting it be known just how out of place he really felt on Themyscira.
"Have you ever tried talking to your mother about how you've been feeling, Kal?" The Queen of the Underworld asked softly, wanting to know more about what kind of divine plotting was going on here on this island, but having no desire to upset the boy she found herself quickly growing very fond of.
"No, my mother's the queen of our tribe and the ruler of this whole island." He told her with his head still down as Krypto looked up at his master with a sympathetic whimper, nuzzling his chest. "She doesn't need any more things on her mind, much less worrying about how I'm feeling."
"She's your mother, it's her job to be concerned with how you're feeling." Persephone told him sternly. "But your loneliness and out of placeness are not the only things that are bothering you, are they, Kal?"
"No, it's not." The boy said looking up at her with very conflicted eyes. "There are still so many things I don't understand, like, why was my birth so special? what am I being trained so hard for? What even is my purpose being? I keep looking for answers and the ones I get… just… don't satisfy me, sometimes... it feels like I'm missing a big chunk of who I am."
"You seek answers to questions no one around you seems to know, you have thoughts and feelings you don't think anyone would understand if you told them, you feel out of place in your own home and you wish to know your reason for even being here on this all-female island." Persephone stated, her tone not questioning, but rather stating facts instead.
The boy's single nod said more than any number of words ever could.
"I see, it would seem you and I have more in common than just our love of dogs, Kal." The Spring Goddess said simply.
Surprised, Kal looked up Persephone with curious eyes that sought an answer and unlike most ones he usually received on Themyscira, this one was a surprisingly honest one.
"After I got married to Hades, I became the Queen of the Underworld, which meant I had to leave my mother and the rest of my family on Mount Olympus behind to rule the Underworld by my husband's side." Persephone explained, smiling sympathetically at the boy before her beautiful face formed into a thoughtful frown. "It was a… difficult transition for me, to say the least, I found it very hard to enjoy both ruling and living in a place so different from my home, I was also missing my mother greatly, despite the fact she can be a bit smothering at times, I still love her, and I missed her every day I was down there."
After hearing this troubled confession, Kal felt a sudden great a sympathy for the Spring Goddess, despite the prince's own personal problems with living in an all-female society, he still couldn't imagine having to be forced to leave his island home to rule over somewhere completely different, much less having to leave his mother and sister behind him.
"But in time, I finally found my place in the Underworld and came into my own as the Iron Queen, keeping order all throughout the different afterlife's, defending both sides of the River Styx, maintaining the Ethereal Houses, helping poor unfortunate souls finally achieve eternal peace and doing my best to make sure that all of the fallen monsters throughout Grecian history remain imprisoned down in the darkest depths of Tartarus where they belong." Persephone said, as fond memories of her earlier days as Queen of the Underworld flashed before her eyes… back when her realm wasn't half reduced to ruins thanks to Zeus's machinations.
"Really?" Kal looking at the Spring Goddess sitting next to him with greater interest than before now.
"Indeed, it wasn't easy, not by any means Kal, but with the help of my new friends, my pets and my husband, I found many reasons to fall in love my new home and my new role, but even more that, I had finally found my purpose in life and then, after all was said and done, I was finally able to reunite with my mother back on Mount Olympus." Persephone said, smiling at the boy next to her.
"You did?" The boy asked again in that same adorably curious manner of his, his beautiful blue eyes shining in low light as he listened to her story more intently than before.
"Yes, she was so glad to have me back in her life again, almost as much as I was happy to have her back in mine, but she also finally understood that it was time for her to let me go, that I needed to follow my own path, the one I had chosen for myself and not the one she planned for me, though we had to part ways again, I still see her regularly now and she visits me often in the Underworld." Persephone said, finishing her story.
Kal's boyish face broke into a genuine smile as this supposedly Iron Queen finished telling him the story of her immortal life, happy that she had found what he was still looking for, purpose and happiness in life. "That's great Persephone, I'm really happy you found your place and got to reunite with your mother again."
"Thank you, Kal, but the point of what I'm telling you is as hard as it may seem, you must also find things to love about your home and your life, only then will you find your purpose and maybe, hopefully even the others answer you seek." The Spring Goddess said offering the boy another warm smile that lit up the darkening garden around them as she pulled something out from with her regal attire and othered it to him. "As for your loneliness though, I believe I have something that might help you with that."
In the Spring Goddess's hand was what looked a combination of a horn and a flute as it had a one mouthpiece, but three different openings, each intricately carved into the shape of a snarling Hellhound head.
The boy picked it up turned it over curiously in his hands before looking up at the Spring Goddess again. "What this? Some kind of instrument?"
"It's a Hellhound Horn Kal, think of it as a specialised dog whistle." Persephone explained with a smile. "This horn will allow you to summon Cerberus, Notch and Spotty from the Underworld once a week, getting my boys out of the house for a while and allowing you and Krypto to have some new friends to play with."
Eyes growing wide, Kal looked down at the intricate and beautifully designed horn in his hands with newfound interest. "Woah, really?"
"Yes, you also have my permission to use it to call upon my pets if you feel that you are in danger and need a fearsome attack beast to help you, I'm trusting you to use this gift responsibly and sparingly Kal, only when circumstances demand, please do not make me regret this decision." The Spring Goddess warned pointedly, but still warmly.
Kal looked up at the Queen of Dread with a surprisingly amount of seriousness in his eyes as he said. "Thank you, Persephone, I promise you, I will prove myself worthy of this great honour."
Once again, Persephone found herself smiling at the boy's sheer sincerity. "You already have Kal, anyway, it's starting to get late, and I believe it's time for us to return to the palace, your mother will no doubt want you back in time for dinner and I'm sure my boys are getting very hungry too."
With that said, Kal, Persephone, and Krypto all left the gardens together, the trio never noticing that hidden high above in the branches of the apple tree Kal had collected the Golden Apples from, was a tall young man, laid out on a long branch, his bright teal eyes were alight with mischievous interest as he watched the trio walk away.
The man was dressed in a white toga with a hooded amethyst cloak draped behind him, which shimmered from between light violet to dark purple in the evening light, he was muscular yet very lean at the same, posing a runner's build.
His face was handsome in a roguish looking way with light brown hair with a long-braided pony tail, his body was adorned with multiple gold accessories, but of particularly note was the golden helmet on his head, the two golden bracers on his wrists, the pair of golden winged boots on his feet, and the gold lined satchel attached to his waist.
Plucking a golden apple from another branch, Hermes took a big bite out of the divine piece of fruit and after swallowing it, grinned to himself at both the delicious taste as well as the newfound information he had just become privy too.
"Well, well, well, this is an unexpected development, isn't it?" The resident spymaster of the Greek Pantheon rhetorically asked himself before taking another bite out of the apple and swallowing it down. "I simply must know more about this… Son of Hippolyta's."
Tossing the rest of the golden apple away, Hermes pulled his cloaks hood over his head and in a moment, the young Olympian vanished completely from sight as he became invisible to the rest of the world around him, the only indication of his presence being the slight fluttering sound of his Winged Boots as he hovered after his cousin and the little Demigodling they had both taken an interest in.
A little while later, back at the Palace Courtyard…
By now, evening had fallen and night had fully settled over Themyscira, but Hippolyta remained, waiting in the palace courtyard for Kal, Krypto, and Queen Persephone to return from their walk in the royal gardens, as the Warrior Queen had long since decided on staying out here until her son had returned to her, she had dismissed most of the other Amazons a while ago, with only Phillippus insisting on staying with her.
As the sky got darker and darker though, Hippolyta started to worry, leading to her eventually trying to walk into the royal gardens after them, only for her path to be immediately blocked by the giant Three Headed Hellhound, as Cerberus and his brothers obeyed their mistresses command to the letter, not allowing any living thing past the area their adoptive mother had ordered them to guard, growling at the Queen of the Amazons and warning her not to come any closer.
HOWL!
Luckily for Hippolyta though, the threatening growls of the giant demonic looking dogs subsided as a very familiar howl was heard coming out of the gardens as Krypto reappeared and immediately rushed over to the much larger dogs, barking excitedly at them, and wagging his furry tail from side to side, which Cerberus, Notch, and Spot all responded to in kind, wagging their long club tail high in the air, nearly knocking over a few trees in the process.
Not long after, Kal and Persephone also reappeared, the pair both laughing at their pets' playful antics as they walked out of the garden together, Hippolyta could still barely believe it when her son walked up to all three of the Hellhounds huge heads without fear and individually stroked each of their snouts, causing the colossal canines to growl in pleasure.
After both Kal and Krypto had said their respective goodbyes to the Cerberus, Notch and Spot, with Persephone promising her three pets they would get to play with their news friends another day, which surprised Hippolyta even more to hear that the Queen of the Underworld had entrusted her son to look after the Guardians of the Underworld once a week.
This day was just full of surprises.
So, with a couple of parting howls, the giant Three Headed Hellhound skulked off into the jungle through the opening they made, heading back towards the tunnel they originally dug to reach Themyscira in first place in order to return to the Underworld.
This was followed by Kal and Krypto saying their farewells to Queen Persephone, who once again thanked them for bringing her dogs back to her, before Phillippus escorted the prince and his pet back inside the palace, leaving Hippolyta alone with Queen of the Underworld.
"The prince is a good boy, you should be very proud." Persephone said to Hippolyta as they watched the prince and his loyal Wolfdog follow Phillippus back into the palace. "He's friendly and very polite, especially for a Demigod and I like said earlier, Cerberus and his brothers rarely warm up to most strangers, your son seems to be a special case in that regard."
"Thank you, your majesty, but I already know he's special." Hippolyta said, as a loving smile found its way onto the queen's face, speaking as much to herself as to Persephone in that moment. "I raised him."
"Yes, it's just a pity he had to end up on this island of all places."
Surprised and more than a little alarmed, Hippolyta turned to see Persephone had one of her dreaded glares fixed directly right at her and in that moment, Hippolyta would have almost preferred to face down the giant Three Headed Hellhound instead.
"Your majesty?" The Queen of the Amazons asked hesitantly, afraid this conversation had just taken a turn for the worst.
"Do you think I am an idiot, Hippolyta?" The Spring Goddess asked rhetorically with an angry growl in her voice that wouldn't have been out of place coming from one her fearsome pets. "I might have left Mount Olympus a long time ago, but I can still recognise one of my aunt's plots from a mile away, I knew exactly what that poor boy's purpose really was the moment you said he was your son, there's only one reason Hera would ever allow a Son of Hippolyta's to live on Themyscira."
At these damming words, Hippolyta said nothing, until finally, she just sighed sadly and looked the glaring Spring Goddess in the eye. "The night Kal… arrived… on our island Persephone, Queen Hera came to us with a warning, she told us that Hercules and his horde would one day escape from the Underworld, that he would return to finish what he started back in Ancient Greece." Hippolyta then looked at her fellow queen with a troubled gaze. "Persephone, is it true?"
Persephone kept up her dreadful glare up for a few moments longer before letting out her own sad sigh and nodded at Hippolyta, her face losing some of its harshness as she spoke to the Amazon Queen.
"Yes, I'm sorry Hippolyta, but it's true." The Queen of the Underworld reluctantly said, confirming the Amazon Queen's obvious fears. "Hercules and his barbaric followers all remain locked up for now, but their restraints are weakening by the year and Zeus has refused to let Hephaestus do anything about it, he wants his beloved bastard to roam free in the mortal realm again, so that he may conqueror and rule in his name and spread will across the Greek world and no doubt that he means to start with your island."
In that moment, it took all of Hippolyta's will power not to scream her undying hatred of the King of the Greek Gods all the way up to Mount Olympus, but she forced herself to calm down and take a deep breath instead. "Then you should understand why I have no choice in this Persephone, and why I must do this."
"I do understand Hippolyta, and you of all people should know, that for almost any warrior, no matter how skilled they are, taking on Hercules in direct combat is almost certainly going to be a suicide mission." Persephone stated with her still notoriously dreaded gaze that would make a Gorgon shudder in fear. "My cousin Perseus all but proved that when he originally took down Hercules before he and his horde could chase you and your sisters when you fled from the Fall of Ancient Greece."
The Amazon Queen said nothing at first, only giving a great sigh as she took her golden crown off her head and starred at her own reflection in it, through the pristine shine, Hippolyta could see the resigned sadness in her eyes, the wear and tear of her queenly mask as it started to slip from her beautiful face revealing the conflicted emotions of a desperate and terrified mother underneath it all.
"I never asked for this crown, Persephone, you know that." Hippolyta said staring at her own regal reflection in the decorated ornament, her saddened gaze becoming hard as she placed the crown back on her head, the gold feeling colder and heavier than before as she turned back to face the Greek Goddess. "But as long as I wear it. I am Queen of the Amazon's and the Ruler of Themyscira, I have a duty to my tribe, to my family and to my Goddess."
"If I have to sacrifice a hundred boys to prevent my sisters from being enslaved again, to save my daughter from having to know the same living nightmare I've had to endure." Hippolyta declared with iron certainty. "Then that is exactly what I will do."
"What if it's just one boy though?" Persephone asked pointedly. "The boy you call your son, the boy you love?"
"Sacrifice is never supposed to easy Persephone." Was all the Queen of the Amazons could say to that near impossible question to answer. "Or it is no true sacrifice."
"I can't argue with that truth." The Queen of the Underworld said simply in response to that uncomfortable answer as Hippolyta turned to walk back to the palace, decidedly done with this whole conversation at this point, talking to a Greek Goddess or not.
It was Persephone's unexpected response that made Hippolyta halt in her step though.
"But then again, this isn't the first son you've killed, is it Hippolyta? Though back then, you did it with your own hands, so I suppose it will be even easier this time around for you, wont it?"
At hearing these particular words, Hippolyta spun back around to say… something, to do… something, but Persephone was already gone in a flash of wild tangling vines, slithering back down into the earth, returning to the Underworld, and leaving Hippolyta alone with her troubled thoughts and an even heavier crown than before.
Hermes, meanwhile, had been watching the whole conversation with great interest from his perch upon a palm tree, right up to the point where a conflicted Hippolyta had walked back into the island's palace with a more aching heart than before.
"Well, it would appear we've entered a new era on Themyscira then." Hermes muttered quietly to himself as he decloaked and became visible again to mortal eyes.
"Future progression of this little princely plot should prove very interesting." With that said, the God of Speed backflipped off the top of the palm tree just as his winged boots began flapping, allowing him to hover safely to the ground before speeding off into the night without a sound to suggest he was ever even there.
Greetings to all my fellow fanfic readers and writers, I hope you all enjoyed Superman, Son of Hippolyta Chapter 13: Royal Confessions, well guys, the cat has officially just jumped out of the bag, because both a Greek Goddess from below and a Greek God from above now know about Kal's presence on Themyscira, which means word will begin to spread now whether the Amazons like it or not, soon other Olympians will take notice of the boy's existence and not all of their intentions will be benign…
Hermes is right about one thing though, we have entered a new era in this story now and as the Messenger of the Gods himself said, future progression should prove very interesting indeed.
Now, before you all go freaking out about Persephone said to Hippolyta right before she left, just remember, one of the main themes in this story so far is that nothing is as it seems, there are mysterious and secrets hiding in plain sight, lies and illusions the characters convince themselves are real, ominous foreshadowing in almost every chapter and the sense that seeking answers may be a more dangerous than you might think…
… anyway, I hope you all enjoyed these lighter chapters, as Shakespeare taught us, you need to balance the dark with light in storytelling and vice versa, so please enjoy these light-hearted moments but also prepare yourselves for things to get darker as we go on, because there are far worse things than a Three Headed Hellhound in the Underworld coming for Kal in the future… far, far worse things…
Now onto answering some more fan questions from all of you guys…
Dak: Yes, there was indeed a new chapter update recently, specifically a new chapter five titled The Wolf and the Lioness which has naturally pushed the original chapter five and every other chapter after it, up a number, sorry if I caused any confusion, but the story needed that particular chapter in that particular spot, now I can't promise it won't happen again, but I do promise to try and make it clearer when it happens from now on.
Daka: I appreciate your enjoyment of the longer chapters as I worked really worked hard on those ones and I promise there will be more of them in the future, but I'm afraid that the chapters in this story are as long or as short as they need to be, sometimes it's just easier to write a shorter chapter with only one scene in it, as it allows me to get it out to you guys a lot faster and boost my writing morale, but rest assured, longer chapters will still happen in the future.
Erika Lopes: Persephone reasons for taking an interest in Kal our her own, she knows boys are not usually allowed on Themyscira, so Kal's mere presence raises some serious red flags for her as far as some kind of sordid scheme going on this island.
The fact that the Amazons were clearly trying to skirt around the whole issue certainly didn't help in that regard either, but at the same time, her Three Headed Hellhound's clearly like the boy and even the Iron Queen of the Underworld herself is quickly beginning to warm up to him as well… needless to say, she's going to be on his side…
evolution-500: Thank you for your complements and your helpful points concerning my punctuation, they are very much appreciated mate, I suppose it's time I tell you all that I actually have Aspergerus Syndrome and it unfortunately effects my writing in this regard, I'll try and work on my dialogue punctuation more, but it's honestly a very hard habit to break, still I'll do my best.
MoonKnight030: First off, allow me to personally thank you for your beautiful comment concerning the flow of this story, I really do try to make it grow naturally, rather than forcefully, but concerning the universe this story takes place in, it's actually my own personal universe with bits and pieces of other DC universes, since the whole premise of this story sort of throws the rest of the DC alternate universes right out of the window anyway.
Now in regards to Zatanna, all I'll say is that Kal will have more than one potential romantic partner as this story progresses, I want to surprise and intrigue my readers with the romantic part of this story as much as any other part of it, though I will say right now that the usual Lois Lane romance and the pairing of Batman and Wonder Women will not happen here, sorry to disappoint any who hoped that would be the case in this story.
I won't sue anyone for likening these pairings, but I want to try some new ones with this story, now that's not to say both Lois and Bruce won't appear at all, but their roles will not be major ones, these two DC characters get plenty of screen time, I want to give other lesser-known DC characters a chance to shine as well, also please don't stop your ranting, I like reading rants.
Yeye anaawangazia: I'm glad you're enjoying the story mate and rest assured that the Man of Steel speech will happen in this story, though not for a while and not in the way you'd expect either, but it will appear, that's a promise mate.
