Author's Note: Woo, done with this chapter! Nothing much else to say right now, so I'll answer reviews, and I'll see you at the bottom:
Dunsparce519: Thanks, I'm glad you're liking those friendships! And, ooh, interesting prediction—let's see if you're correct.
Onward with the chapter!
"Previously on Total Drama Island, campers had to build their own hot wheels in a motocross challenge to race for invincibility. There were big winners, and big-time losers! And there were even some wicked, off-the-track, motocross stunts! Makoto ultimately lost the race and the challenge, which meant goodbye to him and his adorkably charming ways."
At the docks, Chris finished up the recap. "Who will be the next winner? Who will be the next loser? Who will renew my contract for next season? All of these mind-probing questions revealed on this episode of...
Total...
Drama...
Island!"
Episode Eighteen: Hook, Line, and Screamer
The episode opened on a black-and-white image of the woods, spooky music accompanying it. A pair of boots when stepped on-screen, and the camera panned up to show a large man wearing a hockey mask and bloody apron brandishing a chainsaw.
The chainsaw revved and the contestants, in color, were watching the film in the moviegoers a theater with varying reactions.
"Oh, god," Kaede exclaimed, eating some popcorn from the bag in her hands. "Look at the size of that chainsaw!"
"Yeah, definitely would not want to be on the wrong side of that thing," Rantaro added.
Hiyoko's eyes widened. "He's going for the car!"
"Dude!" Junko yelled. "Stop making out with your girlfriend and get outta there!"
"And of course they won't," Celestia added with a disinterested expression, "because people in horror movies all seem to have the collective IQ of a rock."
"Makes for interesting bloodbaths, though!" Kokichi pointed out. "Ooh, like right now!"
"I wonder how much they're going to show," Maki pondered.
She got her answer the moment the screen flashed red. Half of the campers cheered while the other half screamed or groaned in disgust.
"I don't think I like this movie very much..." Sayaka whimpered.
"And the psycho got away," Junko commented. "Wow."
"Wow, what a great movie," Kokichi said as the credits rolled, hopping up from his seat.
"Speak for yourself," Celestia replied. "And how was it even good in the first place? You quite literally said it yourself—the only interesting part was the murders."
"Exactly. Murder equals good movie, in my humble opinion."
Celestia rolled her eyes. "Okay."
"God, I hate horror movies," Sayaka added, her body shaking as she stood up as well.
"Seriously," Maki agreed. "It's just the same exact concept over and over again."
Kaede yawned. "Well, I'm pooped. I'm gonna head to bed." Standing up, she turned to Sayaka. "Are you gonna be okay? Do you want me to walk with you to your cottage?"
"Y-Yeah..." Sayaka nodded. "I'd appreciate that."
The contestants exited the theater, into the night sky, and were about to cross the bridge to the main island when they spotted Chef frantically throwing luggage into the Boat of Losers, much to their confusion. Kaede was the one to approach him.
"Hey, what's going on?"
Chef responded with nothing more than a terrified gasp before hopping onto the boat himself, being operated by none other than Chris himself, and the two sped off into the night. The campers could only watch with confused shock.
"Well... that was weird," Junko said.
"No kidding," Rantaro agreed.
"Huh," Sayaka said, picking up a dark green backpack, "they left a bag behind."
A rolled up newspaper fell out the front pocket, which Hiyoko picked up. Unfurling, she read, "Escaped psycho killer on the loose." The viewpoint switched to show what she was reading; a silhouette of a large man wearing a hockey mask was front and center. "Be on the lookout for a man wearing a hockey mask with a hooked hand and carrying a chainsaw."
"Looks like we have our challenge," Maki said.
"Wh-What do you mean?" Sayaka questioned. "That article sounded pretty real to me."
"Do you truly believe so?" Celestia asked. "First, Chris has us watch a slasher film, then we catch him and Chef fleeing the island, then we discover a conveniently-placed warning? This is clearly a set-up."
Maki pointed at Celestia. "What she said. This is exactly the type of thing Chris would pull."
"I don't know... They looked spooked to me," Hiyoko pointed out.
"They were probably just faking it," Celestia countered. "This is all just an elaborate prank."
"Uh, I don't think this is a prank..." Sayaka said as she looked through the backpack.
"What makes you say that?" Rantaro asked.
"Because..." Sayaka pulled a small bottle of gel out. "Chris left his hair gel behind."
Everyone but Celestia and Maki gasped.
"Okay, this is very, very bad!" Junko panicked.
"Wait," Sayaka said, growing increasingly nerve-wracked by the second, "does that mean Chris left us alone... to die... while an escaped killer with a chainsaw is on the loose?!"
"No, we're alone while that escaped psycho killer with the chainsaw and a hook is on the loose!" Kokichi brandished a hook on his right hand, causing Sayaka to yelp and jump back. "Weren't you listening?"
"Stop being a dumbass, Kokichi!" Hiyoko smacked Kokichi in the back of his head with the newspaper.
"Hey, I'm just telling her the truth."
"Well, I still believe that this is a set-up," Celestia said. "I also believe that you all are getting entirely too worked up about this."
"Can you blame us? There's a supposed serial killer roaming around!" Sayaka countered, before shivering. "Ugh, I feel like I'm being watched..."
"I think that tends to happen when you are on a reality show," Celestia responded dryly.
The camera then zoomed out to show that Chris was watching the scene on a monitor. "Celestia's right," he said. "And tonight, we're watching to see who can survive a real-life scary movie! With special guest appearance by... the escaped psycho killer with a chainsaw and a hook!"
"Okay," Kaede told the others, "even if this is just a challenge, we should stay on-guard tonight just in case. We can hole up in the restaurant—we'll have food and water for the night, and we'll have the upper hand since there's two floors. Sound like a plan?"
Junko nodded. "Yeah. Good idea."
"You all can hole yourselves in the restaurant if you want," Celestia interjected. "But I refuse to fall for Chris' trickery. If anyone needs me, I will be getting ready for bed."
"And then there were seven," Kokichi narrated ominously as she walked off to the main island.
The scene flashed forward to the restaurant, where everyone sans Celestia had finished boarding up the entrances and had taken seats at the tables and glancing expectantly at Kaede.
"Okay," she started, taking a seat beside Sayaka, "all of the doors are barricaded, so as long as nobody leaves, we should be good for the night."
"This sucks," Hiyoko pouted, laying her head on the wooden table. "We won't even be able to get sleep tonight."
Meanwhile, Celestia reached the cottages, but not before stopping by the market first it seemed, if the various bathtub and self-care products were of any indication.
Her hand just touched the doorknob of her own cottage when she heard rustling coming from the bushes behind the small building. She looked up, peering for any sign of someone lurking and after seeing nothing, opened her door. She ended up dropping a bottle, which rolled out of the still open door.
Grumbling, she gently set down the rest of the products on her nightstand and chased after the fallen bottle. It landed at the door of the cottage across from hers. As she bent down to pick it up, the whirring of a chainsaw caught her attention, and her head snapped up to see the man depicted from the newspaper looming over her.
Celestia screamed and shot up to her feet, backing up against the cottage as the killer advanced on her. With no other options, she decided to make a run for it, but the killer was faster and swiftly snatched her arm.
Celestia tried to wriggle and squirm out of his grasp, but to no avail as he ultimately just lifted her off the ground and carried her off to a secondary location, which happened to be a small white tent.
"Chris?!" Celestia yelled, gaping at the host sitting in a chair in front of a bunch of monitors. "What is happening?!"
"Relax, Celeste," Chris calmly told her, "it's just Chef."
"...What?"
Celestia "oof"ed as the man holding her dropped her on her butt before lifting up his mask to reveal that it was, in fact, Chef.
Celestia scowled, getting up to her feet and pointing at Chris. "I knew it! I knew that this whole thing was just a ruse!"
"Well, yes and no," Chris corrected. "It was your challenge to watch a scary movie, then survive one. The good news is you're safe. But now, you get to watch our fake psycho terrorize the rest of the campers! Fun, huh?"
"No," Celestia replied bluntly, crossing her arms.
Chris ignored her, walking over to Chef. "Great work, Chef. But next time, really try and work the hook angle a bit more."
Chef nodded, putting on his mask again before heading out.
Sayaka peeked out of one of the windows, the anxious expression never leaving her face as she scoped the outside.
"Sayaka, I don't think anything's gonna change out there no matter how many times you look out," Junko said.
Sayaka sighed, turning around. "I know... I'm just really on edge and I don't know what else to do." Her eyes swept around the building in its entirety before landing on the kitchen. "Oh! I can bake! Does anyone want brownies?"
Sayaka nearly dashed into the kitchen, and Hiyoko groaned.
"I have to pee."
Kaede looked around. "I don't think there's any bathrooms in here... Do you think you can hold it?"
Hiyoko shook her head. "It's an emergency."
Kaede sighed. "Fine. Just take someone with you."
"Ooh, ooh, pick me!" Kokichi waved his hand around wildly. "I know where the closest bathrooms are!"
Hiyoko scoffed. "Yeah, I know where they are, too—they're called the cottages." Hiyoko paused at that moment, staring at Kokichi for a moment. "Well... Maybe you'll scare the killer off with your personality if he decides to come kill me. Actually, yeah, you can come with me."
"Be careful, you two," Kaede called after them worriedly as the two headed down the stairs.
The scene flashed forward to Hiyoko and Kokichi making their way to the cottages. Kokichi was walking backwards, facing Hiyoko, the grin never leaving his face.
"This is the perfect atmosphere for a brutal killing to happen, don't you think, Hiyoko?"
Hiyoko glared at him. "Stop doing that."
"Stop doing what?"
"Scaring people. It's not funny."
"Yes, it is."
"I'm not going to do this with you, Kokichi!"
"Yes, you are."
Hiyoko growled, deciding to ignore him until they reached her cottage, where she sent him one last glare and said, "Stay here," before disappearing into it.
Kokichi leaned against the cottage, putting his hands behind his head as he scoped out the surrounding area. Unbeknownst to him, the killer was lurking at the entrance.
A few minutes later, Hiyoko exited her cottage, locking the door behind her. Her eyes widened slightly when she spotted Kokichi still standing there. "Wait, you actually stayed?"
Kokichi gasped dramatically. "Hey! I might be mean, but I'm not heartless! ... Although, I can't guarantee that I won't try and push you in front of the killer if he comes for you."
"Whatever."
The two set off back to the hotel building, with Kokichi continuing to tease Hiyoko.
"So—" Kokichi started, before pausing and looking behind him. "Did you hear that?"
"Hear what?" Hiyoko turned as well, furrowing her brows.
"I heard the gate open." Kokichi took a step forward. "Come on, let's go check it out."
Hiyoko stared at him. "Why would we do that? That could've been the serial killer, for all we know!"
"Oh, please. If there was actually a serial killer over there, don't you think that he would've come and killed us by now? I mean, aren't they supposed to be sneaky?"
"Ugh, fine! But only because I don't wanna walk back by myself!"
And so, the duo carefully approached the entrance gate, with Hiyoko repeating how stupid this was all the while. They slowly peeked around the corner and found...
...nobody.
"There's no one here," Hiyoko huffed. "Can we please go back to the restaurant now?"
"I guess," Kokichi pouted. "Man, that was a bust."
Suddenly, heavy breathing caught Hiyoko's attention, and she turned around. "Why are you breathing so lou—AH!"
"I'm not—Whoa."
Both campers were standing only mere feet away from the psycho killer.
"Wow, that chainsaw is actually real," Kokichi commented, eyes widening.
"Why would it not be?!" Hiyoko exclaimed.
The killer raised his chainsaw, and Hiyoko's eyes dashed around wildly. That was when she found her way out of the situation: the path that cut into the forest. She glanced back at the killer, who was more focused on Kokichi. Her eyes then flickered back to an apprehensive Kokichi, then back to the path again. She looked back at Kokichi one final time, then groaned.
"Ugh, screw it!"
Grabbing Kokichi's hand, she sprinted off down the path and through the forest, the killer hot on their tail.
"And here I thought that you didn't care about me?" Kokichi teased, easily matching Hiyoko's pace.
"Just shut up!" Hiyoko snapped.
The duo didn't stop running until they found themselves in the inside of the tent from earlier.
"Chris!" Hiyoko screamed upon spotting him, letting go of Kokichi. "There's a killer with a chainsaw, and a hockey mask, and a hook and he's after us—"
Chris put his hands on her shoulders. "Hiyoko, calm down, it's just Chef!"
"Huh?" Hiyoko stared dumbfoundedly between him and Chef, who had just entered the tent. "This was just... a prank?"
Chris nodded, and Hiyoko plopped down on the floor and took several deep breaths.
Kokichi snickered at Celestia, who was sitting in a chair alone in the corner before taking a seat next to Hiyoko. "So," he started, putting his hands in his lap, "I guess I have to thank you."
"Huh?" Hiyoko looked over at him. "Thank me? For what?"
"For saving me from the killer, duh. Even if it was just a challenge."
Hiyoko squinted at him for a long moment before her face softened. "You're... welcome. I guess."
Kokichi stuck his tongue out at her, and she playfully shoved him back.
Back at the restaurant, it was Junko who was worriedly staring out the window this time.
"Now who's being the anxious one?"
Junko turned to see Kaede staring at her. "Well, can you blame me? It's been twenty minutes and Hiyoko and Kokichi are still gone."
"They probably went to bed because this whole thing is stupid," Maki interjected, standing up. "I'm leaving."
"Sorry," Rantaro apologized, standing up as well, "I kinda agree."
"Wait, what? You guys are leaving?" Kaede asked, moving as if she was going to stop them, but didn't.
"Yes?" Maki looked over at her, raising an eyebrow as if the answer was obvious. "There's obviously no killer if they haven't returned by now."
"But what if the killer got them already?!"
"Don't you think we would've heard something if that was the case?"
"Well, maybe, but—"
"We're going to bed." Maki's firm tone made it clear that nothing was going to change her mind.
Kaede finally sighed. "Fine..."
Maki and Rantaro headed down the stairs, and Kaede defeatedly slumped in her chair while Junko crossed her arms.
Sayaka poked her head out the kitchen mere seconds later. "Huh? What's happening?"
"Maki and Junko left," Junko answered. "By the way, when are those brownies gonna be ready?"
Sayaka frowned. "About twenty minutes."
"You didn't have to come with me, you know," Maki told Rantaro as they made their way to the cottages.
"What do you mean?"
"Didn't you leave the restaurant because I did?"
"Nope. Honestly, it was getting kinda claustrophobic in there."
"Oh."
Maki stared blankly off to the side, and Rantaro chuckled.
"Hey, wanna grab some snacks from the market before we hit the hay? I don't think that popcorn filled me up."
Finally looking back at Rantaro, Maki shrugged. "I guess."
And so, the two made their way to Rocketpunch Market, had gotten what they wanted, and were in the process of getting ready to leave when Rantaro furrowed his brows as he stared at the entrance.
"...Was that always open?"
"Huh?" Maki followed his gaze. "...I don't think so."
It was then that a chill ran up both of their spines as a voice whispered their names in the quiet night air. "Maki... Maki... Maki... Rantaro... Rantaro... Rantaro... Snacks... Snacks... Snacks..."
It seemed both Maki and Rantaro had the same idea, as they bolted to the entrance. The killer was one step ahead, it seemed, and was already waiting for them.
Rantaro put his hands up. "Whoa, hey, how about we make a... uh, deal?
The killer continued on as if he didn't hear them, raising his chainsaw at them. The camera zoomed in on their shocked faces, which changed to slight annoyance and relief as it zoomed out to them standing in the tent alongside the hosts and the captured campers.
"Well, I guess we weren't wrong about there being no psycho killer," Rantaro commented. Maki huffed and folded her arms.
Chris laughed. "Trying to make a deal with the killer? What were you thinking?!"
"Yeah..." Rantaro put a hand on his neck. "Not my proudest moment."
"Well, if it's any consolation, you do get extra points for scooping up these tasty snacks," Chris said, pouring some pretzels into his mouth. Kokichi and Hiyoko, also chomping on the snacks, nodded their agreements.
Meanwhile, Kaede, Junko, and Sayaka were still hanging around in the restaurant. Junko was filing Kaede's nails, both of them trying to distract their anxious minds.
"Um..." Sayaka stepped out into the dining hall, wringing her hands. "So I have good news and bad news." Both blondes stared at her expectantly, and she continued with, "The good news is that the brownies are done. The bad news is that we don't have a cooling rack."
"What?" Junko scrunched her face. "How does the kitchen not have a cooling rack?"
Sayaka shrugged. "But I have one in my cottage that I can go get."
"Do you think that's a good idea?" Kaede interjected. "I mean, the psycho killer could be out there and all..."
"I mean... If I don't, the brownies will burn the pan, and I really don't want to deal with the aftermath of that if Chef and Chris decide to come back."
"Oh." Kaede stood up. "I'll go with you, then."
Sayaka, surprisingly, shook her head, insisting, "No, you should stay here."
"Huh? But what if—"
Sayaka interrupted Kaede by putting a hand on her arm, smiling weakly. "We can't afford to lose any more people, right? I'll just take a weapon with me." She disappeared into the kitchen, this time coming out with a large knife in hand. "See?"
"Just... be careful," Kaede said, but she couldn't help but think it was futile to say that at this point.
"And then there were two," Junko sighed as Sayaka left for the stairs.
The scene skipped to Sayaka wielding the kitchen knife tightly in her hands as she stepped out the comfort of the building. She whimpered, taking slow shuffles around the pool.
"Sayaka... Sayaka... Sayaka... Cooking... Cooking... Cooking..."
Sayaka's breaths became more and more shallow, and eventually, her body swayed and ended up passing out and falling into the pool. She was then unceremoniously dumped, sopping wet, onto the ground of the tent.
"By far, the worst blunder yet," Chris commented as he and the majority of the captured campers crowded around her.
Rantaro lightly patted the side of her face. "Sayaka? You with us?"
Sayaka stirred soon after, blinking a few times. "H-Huh? What's happening?"
"You passed out," Chris told her. "But, you're safe."
"I am?" Sayaka slowly sat up, and a certain hook offered her a bottle of water. She glanced up to see Chef grinning at her, his mask lifted.
Chris nodded. "It's just Chef. He was gonna scare the bajeebers outta you, but it seems your nerves got you first."
"It's not my fault! I just got so stressed about this whole thing!"
"True," Chris admitted, "but you still bailed before Chef even got a crack at you. Speaking of which—you're up, Psycho Man!"
Chef smirked and lowered his mask once more, leaving the tent.
"Yeah, she's not coming back."
Kaede groaned miserably, putting her head in her hands. "I knew I shouldn't have let her go alone..."
"Guess that only means one thing—" Junko stood up, punching her open fist, "—we're gonna have to take the fight to the psycho. I'm not gonna wait around to be killed. You coming?"
"No..." Kaede's head was now laying on the table and tracing at the wood with her finger.
Junko shrugged. "Suit yourself." She swiped a few brownies off the pan now sitting on the table she and Kaede were sharing, only to wince and fumble them. "Whoa, these are hot. But can't fight on an empty stomach. See you, Kaede. Or not. Depends on how this fight goes."
CONFESSIONAL - JUNKO:
"If I'm gonna go down, I'm gonna go down fighting," she said, crossing her arms confidently. "Watch out, psycho killer."
Junko stepped out of the building, only to be met with the same whispering voice from earlier.
"Junko... Junko... Junko... Brownies... Brownies... Brownies..."
Junko grinned darkly. "You and me, psycho!"
Back in the restaurant, Kaede sighed once more, taking a brownie from the pan. "Of course nobody listens to me..."
The scene zoomed out on the monitors, with the screen directly to it showing Junko meeting the killer at the docks.
"Wait, is Junko really going to take him on all by herself?" Hiyoko stared incredulously.
"Hey, psycho!" Junko yelled as the scene zoomed in. The killer turned, chainsaw already whirring. "Aren't you a little far from the rink, goalie boy?"
She picked up a canoe sitting on the dock and chucked it at him. However, the killer easily sliced through it, and her face fell. She then threw her next available item, a deck chair, at him, which met the same fate. Junko scowled, and she threw the brownies on her person at him, stunning him long enough for her to trip him with a surfboard.
He fell and dropped the chainsaw beside him, and Junko snatched it. The killer noticed and brandished his hook, only for it to get cut off by the chainsaw.
"Not so tough now, are you?" Junko gloated. "Now let's see who's behind the mask!"
Kaede was still snacking on the brownies in the restaurant when someone entered without a word, the only sign of their presence being the creaking of the door. She straightened slightly, but did not look back.
"Who just came in? Actually—you know what? I don't even care anymore. You'll probably just leave anyway."
"Look what I've got!" Junko exclaimed, entering the tent with the killer's hockey mask with a smug grin. Chef followed her in soon after, and Chris and the campers cheered.
"Hey, Chris, did you hire another psycho?" Rantaro asked.
"No?" Chris replied, a hint of confusion in his voice. "Why?"
"Uh..." Rantaro pointed up at the monitor screen showing Kaede in the restaurant, a man with a build similar to Chef's but with fair skin, wearing a hockey mask and wielding a chainsaw and a hook towered over her. "We might have a problem."
The entire group's eyes went wide and they all rushed out of the tent, screaming.
"This could be really, really good for ratings," Chris told Chef as they raced along, "but really, really bad for lawsuits!"
"I just don't get why, you know?" Kaede told the mystery man, still chewing on her brownie. "I was trying to help them. But they just wouldn't listen to me, and... I'm sorry. I wasn't trying to be mean or anything. I'm just frustrated, and—"
Suddenly, the doors were thrown open and Kaede looked over to see Chris and company. "That's the real escaped psycho with a chainsaw and a hook!" they exclaimed as one.
"Wait, what?!" Kaede whipped around and, sure enough, the killer raised his chainsaw at her. Kaede was faster, however, and snatched the pan, beating him over the face until his mask was knocked off.
"Ow!" he yelped in an oddly flamboyant voice, pointing an accusatory finger at her. "That was totally uncalled for! Man, I am so outta here. I was treated way better in prison."
Everyone watched in stunned silence as the killer left the restaurant.
"Well," Chris started, he and the campers already gathered at the beach. "I think it's obvious that Kaede wins invincibility."
Kaede smiled half-heartedly, and he went over to put a hand on Sayaka's shoulder. "And sadly, it's almost equally unanimous that Sayaka walk the Dock of Shame, since she was the only one who screamed and bolted without the psycho killer even being there! But, no hard feelings—you will be missed."
"Yeah, thanks." Sayaka stood up, and went over to Kaede. "Bye, Kaede—oh, and congrats on winning the challenge. It was nice knowing you—even if it was pretty short-lived."
Kaede laughed. "Yeah. Same here."
The two girls shared a hug before Sayaka made her way to the Dock of Shame. On the way, she gave also hugs to Maki, Rantaro, Hiyoko, and even Junko and Celestia.
As the boat carried Sayaka away, the whispering voice made one last appearance. "Total, total, total, drama, drama, drama, island, island, island—"
The camera panned over to show that it was coming from the real escaped killer, who was lurking behind a tree.
"Oh man, that really hurt," he whined, holding his jaw. "Is it bleeding?! I think it's bleeding!"
