Chapter 8
Jack watched through his spyglass with his wife next to him. Jack suddenly cursed, lowering his spyglass.
Bonnie jumped back seeing Davy Jones there. The color from her face drained.
Morgan's hand sharply went to her sword.
"You have a debt to pay." Jones said with narrowed eyes.
Jack glanced at his hand where the black spot was.
"You've been captain of the Black Pearl for thirteen years. That was our agreement."
"Technically I was only captain for two years - then I was viciously mutinied upon."
"Then you were a poor captain. But a captain nonetheless. Have you not introduced yourself all this time as Captain Jack Sparrow?"
"Not that I recall, why do you ask? You have my payment. One soul, to serve on your ship. He is already over there."
Jones's face twisted in anger. "You can't trade. You can't substitute."
"There is precedent regarding servitude, according to the code of the Brethen -"
"One soul is not the same as another."
"Ah, so we've established that the proposal is sound in principle. Now we're just haggling over price."
"As has been the case before, I am oddly compelled to listen to you."
"Just how many souls do you think my soul is worth?"
Jones rubbed his octopus beard and smiled. "One hundred souls. Three days."
"You're a diamond, mate. Send me back the boy, I'll get started, right off."
"I keep the boy. A good faith payment. That leaves you only ninety-nine more to go."
"What? Have you met Will Turner? He's noble and heroic, a terrific soprano ... he's worth at least four. And ... did I mention he is in love?"
Bonnie tried not to groan. Telling this man that Will was in love and pretending he didn't have his own love onboard with him.
"Love. You think that matters to me?"
"Due to be married. To a lovely young lady. You hate that malarky."
Jones shot him a keen look. "Sparrow. Might this be a lady you are interested in for yourself?"
Bonnie looked at her husband. Could he possibly have feelings for the woman that was in love with Will? She couldn't imagine that he was in love with Elizabeth when he had been with her for years.
"Not remotely ... but I could be if it helps make the deal."
"I keep the boy. You owe ninety-nine souls. In three days. But I wonder, Sparrow ... can you live with this?"
"Yep."
"You can condemn an innocent man - a friend - to a lifetime of servitude, in your name, while you roam free."
"I'm good with it. Shall we seal it in blood? I mean ink?"
Jones' face darkened. "Let's not and say we did. Agreed?"
"Agreed." Jack said as he shook Jones's hand. "I'd embrace you but I fear it might stick." Jack then lifted his hand to where the black spot was on it and saw it faded. Jack looked around to see that Jones and his men were gone.
Bonnie came over to him and grasped his hand in her own hand looking it over.
Jack moved away from his wife and to the railing looking at the Dutchman that was sailing off into the distant storm. "Gibbs, what is the worth of a man's soul?"
Gibbs pursed his lips together in thought. "Can't say."
"Three days."
Bonnie took a breath moving towards her husband. "There is no way in three days that you'll be able to get 99 souls unless you're willing to part from your wife and daughter." Bonnie said, looking at him.
"I would never give you or Morgan up." Jack said softly looking at his wife.
"But you're willing to ruin others' lives to make sure that you aren't drugged to the ocean below?"
Jack swallowed the lump in his throat knowing what his wife was saying. That he was willing to take the easy way out of this. He could only hope that his plan worked.
