Snoopy was standing next to his house, and he was gradually becoming very impatient. Woodstock had realised the attention getting noises he was making were going unheard, and had since flown back up a tree.
"Okay Snoopy, I'm coming".
Sally came towards him with the beagle's snack. "You know, impatience won't get big brother to put your stomach back on his priorities…".
Snoopy put on a puzzled expression, while still eyeing his snack.
"…he's in his room upset. Those baseball tryouts he'd looked into…they didn't go so well" she sighed "I implied not to underestimate the younger girl, and he didn't catch on. Consequently, he didn't catch anything".
Sally looked to see the beagle munching on his food, giving no indication he was listening. She was about to mention this, but then thought that if he wasn't listening, she might as well say whatever was on her mind.
"Big brother is always really incompetent like that, sports, school life, perhaps putting in a good word for me with Linus. It's just…as far as older siblings go, he's not…..…not a lottery win".
She turned back to see an vacant space where Snoopy was standing a moment before, and saw the dog trodding down the street.
It was now nearing the evening, Linus had wrapped his blanket around his arms to keep out the slightly cold air.
"Lucy", he was back at his front door, knocking on it repeatedly. "What are you doing, this isn't a joke" he knocked again "Let me in".
There was no response from inside, and now Linus was getting desperate. He hammered with both hands.
"LUCY" he tried to yell semi-loudly, "unlock the door. You're being so…unreasonable. I'm your brother".
He felt tears coming down his cheeks, and desperately wiped them away. He wasn't going to show he was hurt.
Unfortunately, he wasn't sure where else was he meant to go?. And he was a bit too worried to think clearly enough…
But then…he stopped his train of thought, because he was now noticing a sound coming from inside.
Linus walked over to a window, hearing the sound of what was evidently snoring. He didn't need anymore confirmation that Lucy, while inside, hadn't heard him. She'd been asleep through it all.
There was to be no such luck getting back into the house. Linus, irritated, turned away, and wandered out of his front yard.
Then, turning to the left, he quickly started backwards, preventing himself from colliding with his best friend's beagle.
Snoopy was standing on the sidewalk, looking at Linus in what could either be curiosity or concern.
"Did I disturb you with the noise Snoopy?"
The dog titled his head, enough that he appeared to answer yes.
Linus sighed, "Between us…it's not my priority, sorry"
The dog only turned around and ran back toward where he'd came. Linus wondered if he had insulted him, except that from nearby, Woodstock was gesturing, asking him to follow.
Upon arriving at the Brown's backyard, Linus saw Snoopy duck into his house.
"Look Snoopy, I need somewhere to stay tonight" he reasoned, "but whatever you might have in there…I don't know if it's big enough. I did an inventory when I helped Charlie Brown build your house"
Linus then remembered that they'd actually been doing a rebuild of the structure.
But either way, his concern wasn't necessary. Snoopy soon returned with a makeshift tent, which he presented to the young boy.
Linus accepted it, and began putting it together. It took some time, as he wasn't the most experienced with camping activities. Thankfully, Woodstock had an instruction manual handy, and that made the finished product suitable.
Snoopy pushed a sleeping bag, mat and pillow into the tent, and Linus entered, before turning around.
"Thanks for the gear Snoopy"
The dog in response scribbled something on a paper, and passed it to him. He read it quickly.
"Based on your current predicament you ought to have some assistance. I consider it a duty to provide what I can…"
"Thanks Sno…" Linus stopped talking, not wanting to make a noise, as Snoopy had immediately retreated to bed.
"…also, if the unlucky round-headed kid gets struck by lightning, for sanctuary I'm hoping to turn to you".
Despite his situation, he briefly chuckled to himself, before he zipped closed the door of the tent, and began his sleep.
The following morning, Linus rubbed his eyes awake as light was shone onto his face from an open tent flap
"Linus?"
He immediately recognised that voice, and looked up to see Charlie Brown leaning through the tent's opening.
"Charlie Brown?" Linus shuffled out of his sleeping bag, noticing the other boy's confusion "oh, I guess you're wondering why I'm here"
"That's my intention" his best friend queried, "this is weird, even for you".
A sarcastic Linus rolled his eyes in response, "Great pun Charlie Brown".
