"Are you just using me?"
"Alex…"
Olivia was more than ready to deny, deny and deny. Even though she knew deep down that Alex had figured her out.
She was their most intelligent ADA anyways.
"It's ok. I won't stop talking to you or anything. I just need to know now, ok?Don't - don't lead me on."
Alex's voice was gentle and too understanding. Olivia, for some reason, wanted to tear her apart. She wanted Alex to be just as cruel as she was in the stands.
She figured Olivia was a fraud. Why was she still pretending everything would be fine?
"Since when you have such low self esteem?"
"Time changes people."
Alex finally got up from where she was lying on the couch. She remained seated and called Olivia to join her.
"Alex," she cautioned.
"Olivia," Alex replied, "I think I deserve the truth."
"You left. You left too."
Olivia wasn't used to her voice sounding so whiny but it definitely helped Alex to start losing her patience..
"Seriously, Liv?"
"Didn't you?"
She seemed to have successfully activated Alex's lawyer mode.
Only thing was, she wasn't lying to make Alex angry. She was, finally, saying the truth.
And when Alex began telling her how it was – when her friend put the cards on the table. That's when she knew it was now or never.
"I did not start a relationship with you before, though. I would never lead you on like this what it is? Did Elliot promise you things? Did you guys–"
"I'm pregnant," Olivia interrupted her before she could give up.
It was her first time saying it aloud.
She couldn't look at Alex right now. But if she could, she would see that, despite the fact that Alex was their most intelligent ADA ever, she had not anticipated this.
"That's oh – how?" She stammered.
"How?"
"Elliot?" Alex asked incredulously.
"A fucking mess," Olivia sighed, burying herself in the cushions of Alex's brand new sofa.
She could imagine Alex's wheels whirling in her head. It was waiting time until the real questions.
It was exactly 40 seconds.
"Olivia, he's been gone for over three months."
Alex's exasperated tone of voice made Olivia miss her first understanding reaction. She wanted it all.
"I can't–"
"Can't what, Liv? You gotta do something. What are you doing? This is serious."
She sounded like they were in Cragen's office in the middle of a difficult case. Olivia bringing insufficient evidence, demanding the most of Alex. It usually ended with a fight.
"You think I don't know that, Alex?"
"Three months? This means, what? You're keeping it? You're keeping it and you're here doing what exactly? We were drinking last night, Liv."
They're in court now. This is Alex's job, she's the prosecutor. And she's damn good at her job, nobody can't deny it. She will accuse Liv and be correct.
"Alex –"
Her defense is extremely ineffective. The prosecution has a strong case.
I can win this,Liv.
"What the fuck is going on?" Are you waiting for Elliot to return and claim you as his wife?
"Shut the fuck up," she said faintly.
"He's not going to, Liv."
She extends you a final offer, but you decline. You cannot take it.
"You have no idea what you're talking about."
So she's going for the kill.
"He didn't even tell you he put his papers in-"
"I KNOW, don't you think I know that?"
They are both very loud, and if they were in court, the judge would reprimand them.
Only there is no judge.
"And now you're out and about after years of crying about wanting to be a mother. What's wrong with you?"
The final argument. Olivia has no more chances of winning.
"I DON'T KNOW. I fucked up. I fucked up, Alex. That's what you wanna hear? I don't know what to do. I can't do it. I'm fucking it up already."
"Livia–"
Throw in the towel. Get your sentence and pay the price.
"I don't think I can't do it."
She was finally crying.
Alex, if they were in court, would be smiling.
Again, they are not in court. They're in Alex's brand-new apartment, complete with Alex's new furniture. It's almost sunrise, and she's wondering why none of Alex's neighbors have phoned to complain about the uproar they're making.
Alex was not the prosecutor. She was her friend.
A friend she had just used in the most selfish way possible.
A friend who was about to console her when she needed it most.
"Of course you can. Liv, if you want to – you can. If there's anyone in this world that would make a great mother that's you. Forget what I just said."
"I'm a horrible person, Alex." She said between her sobs.
For someone who wasn't able to cry for a week, she was doing a great job of it now.
"What? No. Why? Cause you fucked a married man? Who hasn't?"
She would have laughed at it if it wasn't for the circumstances.
"It shouldn't have happened"
"It takes two, Olivia. You didn't do this alone."
Alex had taken her hands into her own. She looked like she wanted to do more, be more physical but she wasn't.
Not anymore.
"I haven't stopped drinking since he's been gone", She confessed. "I took the test, Alex. And I went straight to the bottle."
Like mother, like daughter, she wanted to complete.
But she didn't.
"Yeah, well that wasn't cool. But it's also not the end of the world. I shouldn't have said that, Liv."
"You were right."
"No, I'm just judgmental. It's like my nature but you should know that by know."
Olivia thought again about the neighbors. They were probably so happy now that the screaming had were probably going back to sleep.
The sun was rising, as she could see from the living room window.
Another sunny day in New York City.
"I didn't want to hurt you too," she whispered.
She wasn't sure she even deserved to apologize.
"I know, Liv."
"But I did. Alex, I swear – I'm sorry."
"I know – I know. Don't worry about me. I'm ok. We have to think about you now, ok?"
That was a hard one.
Olivia hasn't thought about her in three months.
Not her, nor the baby inside her.
"Yeah –" She stammered, "Ok."
