Eddie woke with a start. Sweat lined her forehead in a light sheen. Taking a breath, she let it out slowly. This was the fourth night this week she'd woken up at 3am from the same recurring nightmare about Patrick. Turning on her bed side lamp, Eddie pushed back the blankets and the sheet covering her and looked down at herself. Letting out another shaking breath, she wiped the sweat from her forehead. Reaching for her phone on the nightstand, she unlocked it and dialed Jamie. She heard his sleepy voice on the other end of the line.

"Hello? Eddie? Are you ok?"

Eddie nodded swallowed; she knew Jamie couldn't see her nod. It was more of a reassurance.

"Jamie is it ok if I come over?"

Eddie stayed on the line and listened to his response.

"You had another nightmare, didn't you?"

Eddie closed her eyes and nodded, responding.

"Yes."

Jamie wrapped a blanket around Eddie as she sat on his couch next to him. Putting an arm around her shoulders, he listened as she recounted her nightmare.

"The pain was awful. It felt so real Jamie. In the dream, I actually gave birth to him. I didn't have the suit on in the dream. He was ours. Something was wrong and he just kept screaming. Nothing either of us did helped."

Nodding once more, Jamie pulled Eddie into his arms and into a kiss. Eddie reciprocated. When the couple broke apart for air, Jamie kissed her forehead and held her in his arms.

"To be honest, I've been having nightmares the last several nights. Mine are similar to yours. Similar but not the same. In my nightmares, I'm holding him in my arms, the little blond tuft of hair on his head, those pair of blue eye pools looked right back at me. I felt so helpless. He was suffering from a heart condition. There was nothing doctor's could do for him. You and I, he was just so tiny. It's probably just my subconscious playing games with me. But his cries… They just stay with you…"

Eddie understood and stayed in Jamie's arms, her head up against his chest, his heartbeat lulling her into a false sense of security and safety. Jamie added two more cents as Eddie closed her eyes and snuggled against his chest.

"It is strange though; I was a doctor in these nightmares. I don't understand that."

Eddie smirked with her eyes closed and gave a small snort.

"A doctor? You would look really good in a starch white lab coat. Just saying."

Jamie shook his head and rested his chin on top of Eddie's. Sighing in worry, he stared off at some invisible crack in the wall behind his tv.

"My life would've been drastically different had I become a doctor. I could've saved Patrick."

Eddie opened her eyes and gazed up at Jamie.

"You would follow a nightmare?"

Jamie cleared his throat and tried to clear his eyes of tears.

"I know it wasn't real. But I certainly felt like it was."

Jamie furrowed his eyebrow and looked down into Eddie's eyes. She broke the ice and spoke.

"You know Jamie, I never thought about it this way, but the way we look back at our undercover op pretending to be expectant parents, we let it get to us. Patrick was part of the assignment. The nightmares when we put both of ours that we've been having together, make it seem like we've lost a child."

Swallowing, Jamie placed his chin back on top of Eddie's head and wrapped his arms around her waist.

"I guess maybe we should talk to someone about this. It might help."

Eddie nodded and snuggled closer into Jamie's arms.

"To be honest, I've already been talking to the department Psychologist about it. It's helping, but the nightmares continue. I guess my brain just needs to flush the experience out of my mind. Can I stay here tonight?"

Jamie gave her a soft smile.

"You can take my bed. I'll take the couch."

Eddie tilted her head upwards and looked into Jamie's eyes. She gave him a look of surprise.
"Jamie, you don't have to do that. I don't want to take your bed."

Jamie pulled her in for another kiss. When they broke for air one more time, Jamie ran a thumb over her right cheek.
"Anything to make my girlfriend comfortable."

Eddie cracked a small smile.

Jamie was woken up around 2am to noise coming from his bedroom. Wiping the sleep from his eyes, he sat up and saw Eddie in the doorway of his room, one hand bracing it while the other hand clutched her middle. Approaching her slowly, he knew he shouldn't startle her, she was sleepwalking. He waited for a moment and listened to her call out for him.

"Jamie! I can't do this!"

He gave her some space as her eyes widened and she looked around her, seemingly more alert and now awake.

"Where am I? This isn't my apartment."

Jamie slowly came into her line of vision.

"You're in my apartment Eddie. You came over earlier tonight because you had another nightmare about our undercover op. We talked about it and we agreed that you would spend the night here. You were having another nightmare. It's ok, I'm right here."

Eddie felt vulnerable. She didn't like it. But she let Jamie pull her into his arms and rub wide comforting strokes up and down her back.

"Shh. It's ok Ed. Everything's going to be alright. I promise."

Jamie didn't like promises he couldn't keep. But he was determined to make sure this promise was absolutely kept. They were wading into new territory, and they didn't have a road map to go by.
