Annabeth
She was shattering. Cracks dragging through her skin. Every morning when she woke up, she would apply a new coat of glue. Every night when she went to bed, the glue got old and stopped working.
Leo Valdez was going to die. Whispers about a sacrifice were constant in Tartarus. She had her own suspicions as well. But when she saw him at the meeting, she knew. He already had a plan.
She wanted to scream at him. Beg him. Find another way. Tell everyone so they could find another way. That's how the conversation was going to go. Then she saw his eyes.
They were filled with fear. The same fear in Luke's and Ethan's. They died virtually alone. All they wanted was for people to love them, then they died alone.
Dying is acceptable. Dying alone is unbearable. Dying happy is peaceful.
Annabeth could not change his death, but she could help him. Make the last days of his life happy so when he does die, it is peaceful.
So, they were a team now. Bonded by this secret.
Leo came to her room often now. The others seemed almost shocked when they saw him there for the first time. But now he almost never left. They were virtual strangers, but now they were the closest two on the ship.
Sometimes they didn't even talk much. She would read and he would work on machines, but they were comforted knowing the other was there. Sometimes they would talk. Leo would tell her about his plan, and she would talk about Tartarus. Not much. Just vague mentions of battles and monsters. He seemed interested, but he didn't push anything, which she appreciated.
"How?" He asked her once.
"How what?" She looked up from her book.
"How do you read for that long with ADHD? I can't even focus on a paragraph!"
And she laughed. It wasn't a strong laugh, but a smile. It felt odd and she wondered why it felt odd, then she realized. It was the first time she laughed since Percy.
Every time she thought of him, a weight was added to her chest.
She could still see his eyes.
Sea green.
She could still smell his ocean water smell.
Sarcastic trouble maker grin.
Seaweed brain.
The glue was melting.
Help.
She needed help.
She couldn't breathe.
Just breathe.
Help.
She went to Leo. He was building in his room. She sat with him and they talked about movies. She fell asleep that night.
This secret. It kept them together.
Hey guys that's the end of the chapter but I just want to make it clear that I am not shipping Leo and Annabeth they are just friends I promise. For you Greys Anatomy fans just imagine Meredith and Alex :)
