Chapter 26: To Taste the Rainbow
As Goku and Vegeta stepped onto the deck of Capsule Corp, the midday sun beat down over the spacious area. Each of them held the swim trunks and goggles that Bulma had given them, examining them curiously. Goku watched Vegeta as he fiddled with the goggles, trying to figure out how they worked. "These are weird," Vegeta muttered, his brow furrowed in confusion as he messed with the straps.
Goku chuckled, understanding Vegeta's reaction. "Yeah, they can be a bit tricky at first, but once you get the hang of it, they're great for swimming," he reassured, adjusting his own pair of goggles with ease.
Vegeta grunted in response, not entirely convinced as he followed Goku towards the Gravitron. Inside the training chamber, they set their swim gear aside and began Vegeta's Super Saiyan training regimen. Goku pushed the prince harder than ever before, determined to help him reach new heights of power.
Vegeta's muscles strained as he exerted himself, his energy blazing with intensity. For a while, he seemed to be doing great, matching Goku blow for blow and keeping up with the intense pace of the training session. But as the time ticked by and fatigue started to set in, Vegeta's movements began to falter.
Suddenly, one and a half hours into the grueling workout, Vegeta staggered and collapsed to his knees, his breath coming in ragged gasps. Goku rushed to his side, concern etched on his features. "Vegeta! Are you okay?" the taller saiyan asked, kneeling beside him and placing a hand on his shoulder.
Vegeta gritted his teeth, his body trembling with exhaustion. "I'm fine," he muttered through clenched teeth, his pride refusing to admit defeat even in the face of overwhelming fatigue.
Goku frowned, his worry deepening at Vegeta's stubborn refusal to acknowledge his own limitations. "You pushed yourself too hard, Vegeta," he said gently, helping the prince back up to his feet. "It's important to listen to your body and know when to take a break." As they paused, Goku cast a glance at the digital clock on the wall. "Hey, it's almost time for us to go fishing anyway. Maybe, now would be a good stopping point," he suggested, wiping the sweat from his own brow.
Vegeta scowled but reluctantly accepted Goku's assistance, leaning heavily on him as they made their way to the hatch leading to the lower section of the Gravitron. Then Vegeta abruptly pushed Goku off of him. "Alright, I can take it from here," the prince indicated, climbing carefully down the ladder.
"You sure, 'Geets?" Goku inquired, peering down worriedly after him.
Vegeta shot a brief glare Goku's way before limping off to the bathroom. As he stepped into the space, he wasted no time in turning on the shower, the sound of rushing water filling the small room. He stripped off his training gear and clumsily stepped under the hot spray, letting out a groan of relief as the water cascaded over his tired muscles. The prince washed away layers of sweat, feeling somewhat rejuvenated by the end. He scrubbed vigorously at his skin to rid himself of any lingering fatigue. After a couple minutes under the stream, he shut off the water and reached for a towel, drying himself off briskly.
With a yawn, Vegeta reached for his navy-blue swim trunks, pulling them on with a grunt of effort. He grimaced slightly as he struggled to maneuver his tired limbs into the tight fabric, his muscles protesting the movement. Finally, he managed to wriggle into the trunks and snapped the buttons over his tail's fly, securing them in place. He reached for a white tank next, pulling it on over his head with a sharp tug.
Feeling slightly more composed now that he was clean and dressed for the occasion, Vegeta stepped out of the bathroom, his movements still a bit stiff and awkward from the intense workout. He cast a glance towards Goku, who was waiting for him nearby, concern evident in his expression. The other saiyan, likewise, had changed into fresh attire for the occasion, as his previous outfit had become torn.
"I'm ready," Vegeta declared gruffly, his voice betraying none of his lingering exhaustion.
Goku beamed and climbed up the ladder to the main level, beckoning Vegeta to follow. When they were both standing in the Gravity Room again, Goku flipped out his phone and appeared to be fiddling with the screen momentarily. "Now, before we get to the location, I want to show you what the fish look like," he indicated, turning the screen toward Vegeta. Upon it was displayed an image of a colorful fish with an oddly-shaped snout and sail-like fin. "They're really skittish. When we get there, we need to speak only in hushed voices, okay? Otherwise, we'll probably scare them all away. They're spawning right now, so you might see some fins come out of the water in sudden bursts. Also, if you see large bubbles rise to the surface in groups of three, it's most likely these guys fooling around at the bottom. Don't dive into the water. Enter it quietly and try to stay hidden behind reeds. Also, don't go after one of these guys unless it's at least two feet long. The smaller ones don't have enough meat to be worth our time."
Vegeta listened intently to Goku's instructions, his brows furrowing slightly in concentration as he absorbed the information. The image of the colorful fish on Goku's phone intrigued him, and he nodded in understanding as Goku explained the peculiarities of their behavior. "Got it," Vegeta replied curtly, his gaze flicking back to the screen for a moment before returning to Goku. Despite his usual stoic demeanor, there was a hint of curiosity in his eyes as he contemplated their upcoming fishing expedition.
Goku grinned in response, pleased to see Vegeta's interest. "Great! Let's head out then," he said enthusiastically, leading the way out of the Gravitron. As they stepped outside, the bright sunlight greeted them once more, the summer heat rising over the sprawling grounds of the Briefs' estate. Goku took a deep breath of fresh air, relishing the feeling of excitement coursing through him.
As Goku and Vegeta prepared to head out to the river for their fishing expedition, a sense of anticipation filled the air. With Goku leading the way, they were just about to set off when a familiar voice called out the larger saiyan's Earth name. Goku turned around to see Krillin jogging toward them, a hint of nervousness in his human friend's demeanor. Krillin approached Goku, his voice lowered to a hushed whisper. "Hey Goku, do ya think I could talk to Vegeta for a moment?" he asked quietly.
Goku blinked, glancing to Vegeta, whose brow was raised at them. "Why don't you just ask him directly?"
Krillin stammered nervously, his eyes darting between Goku and Vegeta. "Well, you know, I can never be sure what kind of mood Vegeta might be in," he whispered back. "I don't want to make him mad."
Goku chuckled softly, understanding Krillin's apprehension. He turned to Vegeta, a mischievous glint in his eyes. "Hey Vegeta, Krillin wants to talk to you," he called out with a big grin on his face.
Vegeta peered at them, his expression unreadable as he regarded Krillin. "What is it?"
Krillin nervously approached Vegeta, his fingers poking together in a gesture of anxiety. "Hey, Vegeta," he began, his voice hesitant. "I, uh, j-just have a quick question. It's sort of a follow-up to our mentoring session the other day, and I don't want to take up too much of your time."
Vegeta shrugged nonchalantly, his gaze fixed on Krillin. "Go ahead," he tersely replied.
Krillin took a deep breath, gathering his courage before speaking. "Well, I was going to ask Master Roshi, but he's, uh, kind of gone missing," he muttered, his words coming out in a rush.
Vegeta raised an eyebrow, intrigued by Krillin's dilemma. "And?"
Krillin hesitated for a moment before continuing. "Well, I was wondering... about, you know, it's something about women, and…" he explained awkwardly, his cheeks flushing slightly.
Vegeta snorted derisively, cutting Krillin off mid-sentence. "Let me stop you right there, cueball," he interjected, a note of amusement in his voice. "Any advice you've gotten from the old man concerning women in the past, you need to throw that right in the trash this moment. It's garbage."
Krillin blinked, taken aback by Vegeta's blunt assessment. "Why?" he asked, his confusion evident.
Vegeta folded his arms across his chest, smirking. "Because Roshi's idea of relationships is about as useful as a busted scouter," he replied disdainfully. "Trust me, you're better off without it."
Krillin frowned, his cheeks reddening as he looked down. "Well, that's just the thing. I didn't even get to talk to Master Roshi since he went off on a sabbatical for the summer. So, I thought I should ask you instead. I mean, you were able to give me useful advice that got me through that one meeting with a girl."
Vegeta regarded Krillin with a mix of amusement and exasperation. "Fine," he relented, his tone firm. "But on one condition: you swear never to seek advice from Roshi on women again. Agreed?"
Krillin nodded eagerly. "Okay! I promise, no more advice on women from Master Roshi."
Vegeta nodded in satisfaction, satisfied with Krillin's pledge. "Good. Now, what do you want to know?"
Krillin hesitated, scratching the back of his head nervously. "Well, uh, Master Roshi once warned me about something called the friend zone," he admitted sheepishly. "He said it's when you get stuck in a platonic relationship with a woman you like, and you can't ever be anything more than just friends."
Vegeta's eyebrows shot up in surprise. "The friend zone? What the fuck is that?" he exclaimed, incredulity and derision in his voice. "It sounds like nonsense. Figures it would've come from Roshi."
Krillin shrugged, trying to explain. "It's like... when a girl sees you as just a friend, and nothing more."
Vegeta blinked in confusion. "So… I assume this is about a woman you don't want to be friends with?"
Krillin shook his head quickly. "No, no! Well, actually, yes, sort of," he clarified, feeling a bit flustered by Vegeta's directness. "I want a romantic relationship with her, not something platonic…"
Vegeta raised an eyebrow, his interest piqued. "So, you want to avoid being 'just friends' with this other woman you speak of in the same way that, for example, you're 'just friends' with Bulma?"
Krillin nodded fervently. "Yeah, exactly! I mean, it's too early in the relationship to know if she'll only see me that way, but I guess I'm just afraid that that's how things'll end up."
Vegeta chuckled. "Well, my father always said that you have to make your intentions clear from the start. None of this tiptoeing around or pretending to be something you're not. Although, as I recall, he always said it was a matter of saiyan pride. In your case, consider it a matter of human pride."
Goku bounded over. "I wonder if my dad woulda said something like that, too."
"Your father wasn't a king, Kakarott," Vegeta pointed out, side-eyeing the other saiyan. "But maybe."
Krillin scratched the back of his head, the advice lost on him. "Darn, that sounds a lot easier said than done though. So, like, the next time we meet up, I should just… like, ask her on a date or something?"
Vegeta raised a brow. "The fuck is a date?"
Goku raised his hand eagerly. "Ooh, pick me! I know, I know!"
They both turned their attention to Goku.
The orange-clad saiyan straightened up. "A date is when two people do something fun to get to know each other better, usually with romantic intentions. Like, um, when Yamcha and Bulma would go to restaurants together, just the two of them. That's what a date is. Pretty neat, huh?"
Vegeta looked at Goku like he had grown a second head. "Uh… yeah. Sure, Kakarott." He turned his attention back to Krillin. "That actually sounds a bit ambiguous. How about you keep things clear by telling the girl that you think she's very pretty first and then ask her on this… date thing?"
Krillin's face flushed deeply. "Oh man… that sounds reasonable enough, but somehow, I know I'm going to have the hardest time pulling it off. Like, the moment I make my intentions clear, it'll completely change the mood between us. What if she's not ready to hear it yet? What if it makes things awkward?"
Goku scratched his head, pondering Krillin's concerns. "Hmm, I see what you mean, Krillin. It's tough when you're not sure how the other person will react," he mused, his expression thoughtful.
Vegeta crossed his arms, considering the dilemma. "If she's not ready to hear it yet, then it's her loss," he decreed confidently. "You can't control how she'll respond, but you can control how you present yourself. Be honest, be respectful, and let the chips fall where they may. The rest is up to fate."
Krillin nodded, taking in Vegeta's advice. "Yeah, you're right. I'll just have to take a chance and see what happens," he conceded, clenching his fists as he resolved to follow through on the matter.
"Great!" Goku declared. "Anything else we can help you with then, Krill? If not, we better get going."
Krillin looked up at Goku. "Where are you going?"
Goku dangled the goggles in front of him. "Fishing, of course! We'll be back before dinner."
Krillin's eyes lit up with excitement at the prospect of fishing. "Mind if I tag along?"
Goku scratched his head, considering Krillin's request. "Hmm, well, I was kinda hoping it'd just be me and Vegeta," he admitted sheepishly. "Y'know, 'cause, um, we were going to talk about saiyan stuff."
Krillin raised a brow. "Saiyan stuff? That sounds interesting."
"Well, you're not a saiyan," Vegeta retorted. "Most of the saiyan stuff I talk about with Kakarott is for saiyan ears only. Do we bother you about human stuff? No, exactly. We don't."
Krillin chuckled nervously, scratching the back of his head. "Fair enough," he replied, understanding the prince's point. "I guess I'll just have to wait for another opportunity to hear about saiyan stuff."
Goku glanced between Krillin and Vegeta, sensing tension. "Hey, Krill, let's plan something else together. Maybe, we can grab lunch tomorrow?" he suggested, hoping to ease any lingering discomfort.
Krillin's face brightened at Goku's suggestion. "That sounds like a great idea, Goku! I'd love to catch up."
"You joining us for dinner with the Briefs tonight?" Goku asked.
Krillin nodded. "Yeah, I originally wasn't planning to come back until Monday, but things got kind of dull at Kame House without Master Roshi around," he explained, rubbing the back of his neck.
Goku nodded. "Okay, I got it." He turned to Vegeta. "Looks like we'll have to catch an extra fish or two."
"That's fine," Vegeta indicated.
Goku beamed at them both. "Awesome, guys. Now that that's all settled, let's get going before it gets too late," he declared, turning to wave goodbye to Krillin. "See ya later, buddy!"
Krillin waved back at Goku and Vegeta with a smile. "See you later, Goku! Vegeta!" he called out, his excitement still evident despite not being able to join them on their fishing trip.
As Goku, Vegeta, and Krillin bid each other farewell, they went their separate ways for the time being. Goku and Vegeta took off into the sky, their energy soaring as they flew over the city. The warm breeze blew by as they headed toward the river outlet to the south, eager to embark on their aquatic adventure.
…
Alpha strode confidently into the Rainbow Capsule Lounge, his eyes scanning the room for any sign of Lamya. Spotting a server dressed in drag, he made his way over and leaned in, speaking in a low voice. "Excuse me, do you know where I can find Lamya? I met her just the other night."
The server raised a well-manicured eyebrow and replied in a deep sultry voice, "Oh, you mean the gorgeous butch babe who recruits for the pride protests? I saw her like an hour ago. Not sure where she ran off to. Maybe she went, ahem, downstairs? You might have to ask around a bit."
Alpha's eyes widened imperceptibly at the mention of 'downstairs,' a subtle indicator of the secret club rumored to lie under the lounge. He nodded at the hint and asked, "Who can I ask for more info?"
The server glanced around the lounge before nodding toward the back wall. Following the direction of the nod, Alpha spotted a burly figure emerging from one of the interior doors. "Lumber, the big bad leather papa ought to be able to help you out," the server uttered to Alpha as the large man sauntered out onto the floor with a confident swagger, greeting staff and patrons alike with a tip of his Muir cap.
Alpha smiled in thanks to the server before smoothly making his way over to Lumber. As Lumber engaged in conversation with a patron, Alpha patiently waited for a moment to catch the big guy's attention. When the timing was right, he tapped Lumber firmly on the shoulder.
Lumber spun around, his eyes lighting up in recognition. "Hey, there! What can I do for you?"
Returning the greeting, Alpha got straight to the point. "I'm looking for Lamya. Have you seen her?"
Lumber lifted his cap to scratch his head in thought, scanning the lounge. "Lamya, Lamya... Ah, yes! I just saw her heading to Lesbians' Labyrinth down below," he replied with a nod. "You gotta be registered and a lesbian to go in, but you could probably wait for her in the Rainbow Capsule Library if you want."
Curious, Alpha furrowed his brow slightly. "What's the Rainbow Capsule Library?" he inquired.
Lumber chuckled, adjusting his cap for comfort. "Ah, the Rainbow Capsule Library is the first floor down into the secret club below the lounge," he explained. "It's where prospective clients are taken to learn more about the club, its services, and its rules. Registration isn't required just to go down there, but if you want to proceed to the explicit section in the back, well, that's another story."
Alpha nodded, absorbing the information. "Got it. Thanks for the heads up," he said gratefully. "Uh… so, how do I get there? A library sounds harmless enough, just doing some reading to start."
Lumber flashed him a grin. "I can bring you down," he replied, nodding to the way from whence he had come. "Just follow me. Feel free to grab any book on the shelf and find a spot in Cozy Corner to relax and read. There's always a librarian on duty during daylight hours, so if you have any questions, direct it to him or her. A librarian can also help you with registration if you're interested."
After expressing his gratitude, Alpha followed Lumber as he led the way toward the back of the lounge. They passed through a door that led to a relatively nondescript unfinished hallway.
The atmosphere felt different here, slightly mysterious and secretive. As they moved past the bathrooms, Lumber glanced around suspiciously before turning his attention to Alpha with a serious expression. "Pinky swear you won't bring anyone new here without going through one of the staff first? Some secrets protect our community, if you know what I mean," he said, extending his pinky finger.
Alpha nodded solemnly, understanding the importance of discretion. "I promise. You have my word," he replied, linking his pinky with Lumber's in a traditional gesture of trust and secrecy.
Satisfied with Alpha's assurance, Lumber led him to what seemed like a dead-end wall. However, with a quick click and a deft push, Lumber revealed a hidden passage that led to a narrow staircase. Alpha followed Lumber down one flight of stairs, the anticipation building with each step that they descended. Finally, they reached a plain door at the bottom of the staircase with a sign on it; it said '#1 Rule: Speak in a hushed voice when people are reading.' Lumber opened it and gestured for Alpha to step inside.
As Alpha entered, he was stunned by the sight that greeted him. Before him lay a colorful and inviting library with high shelves filled to the brim with books of all kinds. The air was heavy with the scent of aged paper and candle wax. Bright lighting created a perfect environment for reading. It was a stark contrast to the dimly-lit lounge above. Alpha marveled at the hidden beauty of the Rainbow Capsule Library, feeling a sense of wonder and excitement wash over him as he took in his surroundings.
Lumber came in and stood by Alpha, gesturing to the chamber. "You want the quick tour?"
Alpha nodded eagerly. "Sure!"
"Alright," Lumber replied. "First section on your left here, that's about the club. It's much bigger than you might imagine at first and is divided by sexual orientation. For example, lesbians only want to do their thing around other lesbians, so that's why Lesbians' Labyrinth only permits entry to gay women. Make no mistake, the rules are strict. Transwomen are only granted access once fully transitioned and passing top to bottom. A few rooms in Lesbians' Labyrinth are reserved for women born as women only, for those with stronger preferences than others. The rules are pretty much the same in Gay Mancave. Pansexual Paradise is reserved for nearly anyone, straight, gay, bisexual, who don't mind being in mixed company. That includes transgender individuals at any stage in their transition, as well as crossdressers."
"Wow, it's like you've got everything covered," Alpha replied, looking encouraged.
Lumber laughed. "Well, we try. We are a diverse community, after all. Anyway, in this section of the library, you'll be able to learn all about the different areas of the club. It's pretty extensive, so you'll find maps, rules and guidelines for each area, etc. Now, moving toward the back here, you'll find all kinds of LGBTQ+ literature divided into sections. There are whole areas dedicated to nonfiction, fiction, graphic novels, history, politics, poetry, romance, and more all in relation to the LGBTQ+ community. Keep in mind, all books here don't go beyond a PG-13 rating. If you want something more mature, you gotta inquire with a librarian about how to get access to the explicit section in the back. Got it?"
Alpha listened intently as Lumber provided the tour, absorbing every detail with keen interest. He nodded along as Lumber explained the different sections of the library and the rules governing access to each area of the club below the library itself. "Wow, this is all pretty incredible," Alpha remarked, feeling encouraged by the comprehensive setup of the club. "What a haven we have here!"
Lumber chuckled modestly. "Keep in mind, the normies up above have many more options than we do where these things are concerned. This is one of the few havens that we actually have in this city."
As Lumber concluded the tour, Alpha expressed his gratitude. "Thanks a lot for showing me around."
Lumber smiled and gestured toward the sitting area in the far corner of the library. "No problem at all. Feel free to make yourself at home over there in Cozy Corner," he said, indicating the various seating options, including couches, floor cushions, a chair with a desk, and even a couple of hammocks.
Alpha nodded in thanks and then followed Lumber's gaze to the librarian's window near the reading area. There, he spotted an old lady with rainbow-colored hair reading quietly behind the desk.
"That's where you go to read," Lumber explained, pointing to the sitting area. "And if you need anything or have any questions, just head over to the librarian's window. She's there to help."
Alpha glanced over at the window, noting the door on the left side. "Got it."
Lumber clapped him on the shoulder. "Lamya and you should be able to spot each other when she is on her way back up. I have no idea how long she'll be, but you can also leave a message for her with the librarian if necessary as well. Maybe, if you sit and read for a while, you'll be able to catch her."
With a nod of thanks, Alpha eagerly went to peruse the varied reading material on the library shelves, anticipation building within him as he settled in to wait for Lamya's emergence from the club.
…
As Goku and Vegeta soared through the clear mid-afternoon sky, the sun beat down upon the expansive forested landscape around them. A warm gentle breeze swept through their dark locks as they traveled farther south, the warmth of the summer day enveloping them. As they approached the coastline, a vast river delta came into view, sprawling out like intricate veins across the natural landscape.
Goku, ever the nature enthusiast, paused their flight to admire the sight. He pointed excitedly down below. "Hey, Vegeta, check it out! That's the river delta where the snuffle-nosed rainbowfish go to spawn," he exclaimed, his voice carrying over the summer winds. "They spend most of their lives in the ocean, but when it's time to lay eggs, they come back to where they were born. Pretty neat, huh?"
Vegeta glanced at the intricate network of waterways, his sharp eyes taking in the scene with interest. "I suppose it's interesting in its own way," he conceded, his tone betraying a hint of curiosity.
As Goku and Vegeta continued their flight, Goku led them closer to the estuary, the landscape below changing from dense forests to a patchwork of greenery and waterways. The river delta sprawled out before them, a mesmerizing tapestry of twisting channels and lush vegetation. Goku scanned the area with keen eyes, his excitement building. Spotting a particular spot that seemed to teem with activity, he pointed it out to Vegeta. "There, that's where we'll find the most fish," Goku declared, his voice brimming with anticipation. "But let's land on that little ait over there," he suggested, pointing to a small sandy island nestled amidst the waterways. "We can sneak into the water quietly and swim over to where the action is."
Vegeta nodded in agreement, his curiosity piqued by the prospect of observing the snuffle-nosed rainbowfish in their natural habitat. With Goku leading the way, they descended towards the sandy island, the rush of wind giving way to the tranquil sounds of lapping water and rustling leaves.
Touching down softly on the sandy shore, Goku and Vegeta surveyed their surroundings. The island was small but idyllic, surrounded by shallow waters that shimmered in the golden light of the afternoon sun. Vegetation dotted the landscape, offering a semblance of cover as they planned their approach.
"All right," Goku whispered, his voice hushed. He paced over to a nearby tree and took a fallen branch, using the heat from his ki to carve and shape it into a sharp point. "Make a little hand spear like this. The fish are slippery, so the best way to catch them is to stab them in the gills or right behind the eye. Don't touch the top three inches of the dorsal fin on the top. It's razor sharp. It is safe to put your hand in their mouths though because they don't have teeth. That's one way to carry them out of the water."
Vegeta watched as Goku demonstrated how to craft a makeshift spear, his eyes focused. Taking another fallen branch, he mimicked Goku's movements, using the heat from his own ki to carve and shape it into a sharp point. After fashioning his hand spear, he tested it in his grip for balance and sturdiness.
Once they were both satisfied with their makeshift tools, Goku started to strip off his outer clothes. He hung the discarded garments from a branch. Vegeta did the same, pulling off his white tank and hanging it up to keep dry. Goku approached Vegeta and aided him in the task of adjusting his goggles. "Here, let me help you with those," Goku said, gently fixing the straps to ensure a snug fit. "You want them to be tight enough to keep water out, but not so tight that they're uncomfortable or mess up your vision."
Vegeta grunted in acknowledgment, absent-mindedly tapping Goku's bare leg with his swaying tail as he allowed the taller saiyan to adjust his goggles for him until they fit comfortably over his eyes. Once they were both prepared, they exchanged a nod, silently communicating their readiness to embark on their underwater hunt. With their makeshift spears in hand and goggles in place, Goku and Vegeta waded into the shallow waters, the cool embrace of the river enveloping them. With each step, anticipation heightened their awareness, their senses attuned to the subtle movements of the underwater world.
Vegeta lowered his head into the water, his vision rapidly adjusting to the aquatic environment. What greeted him was an alien landscape teeming with life and vibrant colors. Red river reeds swayed gently in the current, their slender stalks disappearing into the depths below. Floating lilies adorned the surface, their delicate petals casting dappled shadows on the sandy riverbed. Beneath the surface, the prince marveled at the diversity of vegetation and creatures that populated the brackish waters of the delta. Bulbous attachments hung from the stems of the river reeds, serving as shelters for various aquatic species. Sturdy root systems anchored plants in the muck below, providing stability and sustenance.
Smooth rocks littered the riverbed, their surfaces adorned with crustaceans and brackish mussels clinging to their crevices. Urchins nestled in the nooks and crannies, their spiky exteriors providing protection from predators. Octopi glided gracefully through the water, their tentacles undulating with fluid grace.
But it was the colorful fish that captivated Vegeta the most. They darted and danced among the vegetation, their scales shimmering in the dappled sunlight from above. From sleek silver minnows to vibrant neon-colored fish, the underwater world was a kaleidoscope of hues and patterns, a testament to the beauty and diversity of nature on the little blue planet that Goku called home.
Vegeta felt a sense of wonder as he explored this hidden realm beneath the surface of the river delta. While he had seen great diversity traversing the stars as Frieza's minion, he had never gotten an opportunity to slow down and truly observe what he had been ordered to destroy. Time was always of the essence in Frieza's army and deadlines had been tight and unyielding. Yet this simple fishing trip with Goku had introduced him to an astonishing microcosm, a testament to the mysteries and marvels of the natural world on living planets. With each passing moment, he felt a deeper connection to the vast and intricate web of life around him, strengthening his appreciation for the tiniest wonders of the universe.
As Vegeta marveled at the colorful array of fish, his attention was suddenly drawn to a large, bizarre creature with transparent skin gliding gracefully through the water. Intrigued, he swam closer to get a better look, his curiosity piqued by the sight before him. The transparent fish seemed to shimmer in the dappled sunlight, its delicate form allowing Vegeta to see the inner workings of its body. He could make out the faint outline of its beating heart, the rhythmic pulsing of blood rushing through its veins. It was a mesmerizing sight, unlike anything he had ever witnessed before close up and in person.
Fascinated, Vegeta reached out a hand to touch one of the fish's nearly-invisible fins, curious to feel its texture. But as soon as his fingers made contact, the slippery creature darted away with surprising speed, disappearing into the depths of the river. Just as Vegeta was about to follow, he felt a sudden light tug on his tail. Glancing back, he saw Goku waving at him, a look of excitement on his face. The saiyan gestured animatedly, trying to get Vegeta's attention. He swam off in the opposite direction, signaling Vegeta to follow him. The skeletal fish forgotten, Vegeta turned and swam in pursuit of Goku.
As Goku and Vegeta stealthily swam through a thick forest of river reeds, they sensed activity in the water ahead. Poking their heads through the other side of the reeds, Goku and Vegeta were greeted by an expansive open area teeming with life. A school of snuffle-nosed rainbowfish varying in size from one to four-and-a-half feet in length swam gracefully through the brackish water, their colorful scales shimmering in the sunlight as they prepared to spawn. Goku signaled for Vegeta to retreat, and they both swam back to the surface, breaching the water and grasping onto a floating log for support. As they caught their breath, Goku leaned in close, his voice barely above a whisper. "We need about four to five of the big guys to feed everyone at dinner tonight, including Krillin," Goku murmured, his eyes gleaming with determination. "Why don't you swim around the ait and herd the whole school in my direction? I'll be ready to catch them when they come. That way, I can show you how it's done most effectively."
Vegeta nodded in acknowledgment of Goku's plan, his predatory instincts kicking into gear at the challenge. He slipped back beneath the surface and circled around the small island in the opposite direction. Breaking through another line of reeds, Vegeta startled the school of rainbowfish, sending them into a darting frenzy as they scattered in every direction. With keen saiyan instincts, he swiftly assessed the situation, identifying a group of fish attempting to swim in the wrong direction. With a burst of speed, Vegeta intercepted the wayward fish, herding them back towards Goku's position. He moved with fluid grace, cutting off their escape routes and guiding them towards his companion with expert precision.
Meanwhile, Goku waited patiently, his senses attuned to the subtle movements of the water around him. As Vegeta's efforts began to take effect, he braced himself, ready to spring into action at a moment's notice. Suddenly, Goku saw a flash of movement out of the corner of his eye. Reacting with lightning-fast reflexes, he lunged forward, skewering one fish through the head with his hand spear in a swift and decisive motion. At the same time, another fish attempted to dart past him, its vibrant scales gleaming in the sunlight. With impeccable timing, Goku jabbed his fist through its gills, delivering a fatal blow.
Goku's swift attack sent shockwaves through the school of rainbowfish, sending them scattering in a panicked frenzy. As they darted through the water in every conceivable direction, their vibrant scales glinted in the sunlight, casting shimmering reflections across the estuary's surface.
The sudden chaos drove the remaining fish straight back in Vegeta's direction, their desperate attempts to escape the first assailant leading them directly into the path of the prince's spear. With perfect focus, Vegeta lunged forward, aiming to strike one of the fleeing fish with lethal precision. However, in his haste to catch the elusive prey, the smaller saiyan's aim faltered slightly, causing his spear to penetrate the side of the fish rather than striking true. The blow was not instantaneously fatal, and the injured fish thrashed wildly, its movements sending ripples through the water and creating a turbulent current.
Caught off guard by the fish's erratic movements, Vegeta found himself thrown about, his grip on the spear slipping as he struggled to maintain control. The injured fish surged forward, dragging Vegeta along for a wild ride through the water as it flapped and thrashed in a desperate bid for survival. Despite the unexpected turn of events, Vegeta's instincts drove him to secure his prey. With steely resolve, he fought to regain control, determined to emerge victorious in the thrilling underwater chase. The fish darted wildly, its movements threatening to find it escape. With a surge of strength and agility, Vegeta managed to steady himself just enough to summon a burst of energy from within. Channeling his ki into his free hand, he unleashed a sharp energy blast directly at the prey's head. The blast struck true, piercing through the fish's skull with deadly accuracy, causing it to bleed out quickly and succumb to its wounds.
The sharp sound of the energy blast reverberated through the water, startling the remaining school of rainbowfish and driving them back in Goku's direction. Meanwhile, Goku had swiftly retrieved his spear from the first dead fish and was prepared for the onslaught. As the school of fish surged towards him, Goku thrust his spear forward, striking down another fish with lethal accuracy. Sensing an opportunity, he then followed Vegeta's lead, summoning a sharp energy blast from his fingertip and directing it towards the next fish in line. The energy blast tore through the water, striking the fish with pinpoint accuracy and causing it to falter in its movements. With one swift motion, Goku seized the opportunity and delivered a decisive blow with a hand jab, ensuring that the fish met its end swiftly and efficiently.
Goku and Vegeta, adrenaline still coursing through their veins, quickly regrouped on the sandy ait where they had left their clothes. With their bountiful catch of snuffle-nosed rainbowfish in tow, they laid them out neatly under the tree with their discarded garments. Goku reached into his pocket and pulled out an empty cold container DynoCap, a compact device capable of storing perishable items at a constant low temperature. He popped it open and gestured for Vegeta to help him transfer the fish into the container. "Great job, Vegeta," Goku praised, smiling as he admired their haul. "Woo hoo! That went better than I expected. Normally, I have to launch like two to three different attacks to get such a bountiful harvest."
Vegeta suppressed the urge to bristle, slightly peeved that Goku had managed to take down three more fish than he had. "Well, at least no one will go hungry," the saiyan prince conceded.
Working together, Goku and Vegeta carefully arranged the fish inside the cold container, ensuring that they were all snugly packed together and ready for transport. Once they were satisfied with their handiwork, Goku sealed the container shut with a satisfying click. "Ready to head back?" the larger saiyan asked, turning to Vegeta with a grin. "I'm sure Mrs. Briefs will be thrilled with our catch. Plus, I can't wait to see the look on Krillin's face when he sees what's on the menu for dinner tonight."
Vegeta nodded. "Let's not keep them waiting."
After dressing, Goku encapsulated the container and stowed the DynoCap in his pocket. With their mission accomplished and their catch secured, Goku and Vegeta took flight, soaring back towards West City. As they flew through the sky, Goku could not contain his excitement, chattering away to Vegeta about the meal they were about to enjoy. "I can already taste it," Goku exclaimed, his eyes sparkling with anticipation. "Snuffle-nosed rainbowfish sushi and bone-fin soup for a starter, followed by an entrée of pan-roasted filet with a side of fresh greens from Mrs. Briefs' garden! It's going to be amazing!"
Vegeta smirked at Goku's enthusiasm, finding himself looking forward to the meal as well. "Ha, ha, Kakarott… you're such a shameless glutton. If I'm being totally honest, it's probably one of your more tolerable traits," the saiyan prince teased, his tone gruff but tinged with a hint of amusement.
Goku chuckled, nudging the other saiyan playfully as they flew. "Come on, Vegeta, admit it. You're excited, too!" he shot back, grinning like an overexcited child. "There's nothing like a good meal after a successful hunt. And with this many enormous fish, we'll have more than enough to go around!"
Vegeta shrugged nonchalantly. "I suppose I am somewhat looking forward to it," he admitted begrudgingly, a small smirk playing on his lips. "Though I wouldn't call it excitement, per se."
Goku grinned, knowing he had won a small victory in getting Vegeta to admit his anticipation. "Hey, a little excitement never hurt anyone," he replied cheerfully, his eyes scanning the horizon as they flew. "And besides, Mrs. Briefs always knows how to prepare a fantastic meal. I'm sure she'll work her culinary magic with these fish. She did say she was able to get Chi Chi's recipe, after all."
As they approached Capsule Corp, the sprawling compound came into view. Goku and Vegeta landed by a large fish-processing station set up on the patio. Vegeta pointed at it, raising an eyebrow in curiosity. "What's that?" he asked, his gaze shifting to Panchy as she approached them with a bright smile.
Mrs. Briefs greeted the arriving saiyans before explaining, "Welcome back, boys! Oh, that's just a little something I set up after talking to Chi Chi on the phone. She had the good graces to warn me that the fish might be quite heavy, so I thought I could use some help processing them. I'm nowhere near as strong as the Ox-Princess is and I figured you big strapping fellas wouldn't mind lending a hand."
Goku grinned eagerly at the prospect. "Of course not, Mrs. Briefs! We're happy to help," he exclaimed, already picturing the delicious meal that awaited them. "We can gut and scale them and even cut them down to a manageable size. Whatever you need. You're doing us all a huge favor!"
As they conversed, Krillin emerged from the house, his expression eager as he approached Goku. "Hey, Goku, how did the fishing trip go?" the human fighter asked, excitement evident in his voice.
With a grin, Goku reached into his pocket and pulled out the DynoCap containing the bountiful catch. He decapsulated the container and then popped the lid off, revealing the gleaming fish therein to Mrs. Briefs and Krillin. Mrs. Briefs gasped, placing a hand to her face. "Oh, they're beautiful… and big!"
"Check it out, Krillin! We caught a ton of snuffle-nosed rainbowfish!" Goku exclaimed, his eyes shining with pride. "And Mrs. Briefs is going to work her magic on them for dinner tonight!"
Krillin's eyes widened in amazement as he peered into the container. "Wow, that's incredible! You guys really outdid yourselves," he exclaimed, impressed by the size and quantity of the catch.
Mrs. Briefs nodded in agreement, her eyes twinkling with excitement. "Indeed, it's quite the haul."
Vegeta wearily glanced over at the fish-processing station, then back at Krillin, who was eagerly examining the catch with Goku. With a nonchalant shrug, Vegeta spoke up. "Maybe, Krillin should take my place helping Kakarott process the fish," he suggested, a hint of laziness evident in his tone.
Krillin looked up, surprised by Vegeta's proposal, but he quickly nodded. "Sure thing, Vegeta! I'm more than happy to help out with all this," he replied enthusiastically, eager to lend a hand.
"Aww, Vegeta… don't go," Goku uttered, a look of disappointment on his face.
Mrs. Briefs interjected, "Actually, having more helpers would speed things up considerably. We have quite a bit of work ahead of us to prepare this meal." She turned to Vegeta and added, "Chi Chi's recipe is quite elaborate and time-consuming. Dinner won't be ready until seven at the earliest if we're lucky."
Feeling a rumble in his stomach at the mention of dinner, Vegeta was easily able to see reason. "I suppose you have a point," he conceded, acknowledging the practicality of having more hands on deck. "I've got something that might help things go faster," he mused, heading inside momentarily.
As Goku and Krillin got started with the processing, Mrs. Briefs provided them with large kitchen knives to begin gutting the fish. They went to work, slicing open the bellies of the rainbowfish to remove their innards. The guts proved to be substantial and heavy, necessitating the use of an oversized empty container to store the discarded bits. The task quickly turned messy as blood and entrails spilled onto the processing station, but Goku and Krillin remained undeterred, focused on their task. Meanwhile, Vegeta returned from inside the house with a subtle smirk on his face, tossing a DynoCap up and down in one hand repeatedly. Krillin noticed the capsule. "Hey, Vegeta, what's that you've got there?"
Vegeta's smirk widened as he clicked the tab on the DynoCap and tossed the capsule into the air. As it descended, Vegeta effortlessly caught a surprisingly familiar-looking katana sword in his hand, its blade gleaming in the sunlight. Krillin's eyes widened in surprise as he recognized the weapon. "Wow, that sword looks a lot like the one that Yajirobe used to…" Krillin began, trailing off as his face paled.
Vegeta laughed wickedly and nodded. "Oh, indeed, it is. The very same sword he used to sever my tail. Unfortunately, I had to confiscate it from the fat fuck a few months back when he made the foolish decision to steal my dinner," the prince explained, twirling the sword expertly in his hand.
Goku's eyes widened in shock. "V-Vegeta, you mean to tell me that Yajirobe stole your dinner... and you let him live?! Man, you're getting soft!" Goku exclaimed, disbelief written all over his face.
Vegeta chuckled darkly at Goku's reaction, his smirk widening as he toyed with the katana. "Oh, come now, Kakarott. Perhaps, it is not I who am getting soft at all. Maybe, you're just getting hard. But don't worry, I made sure he regretted it," the prince replied, his tone dripping with amusement. "Let's just say he won't be stealing anyone else's dinner again anytime soon… if he knows what's good for him."
Goku blinked, momentarily taken aback by Vegeta's response. "Uh, Vegeta, I don't think that's how that works…" he stammered, his cheeks flushing slightly as he tried to process the cheeky turn of phrase.
Vegeta threw back his head in laughter. "Ah, ha ha!" he blared, pointing a thumb at Goku while making eye contact with Krillin. "Get a load of this fuckin' guy acting like he knows how shit works."
Goku's face turned crimson. "Vegeta! Don't make fun of me, you meanie…"
Krillin, taken aback by the revelation, could not help but interject. "Wow, Vegeta, that's… intense," he commented, a mixture of awe and apprehension written all over his face. He chuckled nervously, hoping to lighten the mood. "Well, uh, glad to see you took care of the situation," he interjected, shooting Goku a sidelong glance. "So, um, yeah… Let's just focus on the fish for now, shall we?"
Vegeta snickered, enjoying the discomfort he had caused. "Of course. We have more pressing matters at hand," he agreed, approaching the end of the processing station. "You two gut and then pass them to me. This razor-sharp blade should scale each fishy carcass smoothly and efficiently."
Goku, Krillin, and Vegeta set to work in a synchronized rhythm. Goku and Krillin sliced open the bellies and removed the innards. Despite the messiness of the task, they remained focused, their minds set on the delicious meal that awaited them. Once gutted, they passed the fish along to Vegeta, who skillfully wielded the katana sword, using its razor-sharp edge to scale each carcass with precision and ease. With each swipe of the blade, scales flew off, revealing the shimmering, iridescent skin beneath.
Each step of the process blended seamlessly into the next as the trio collectively formed a well-oiled machine. Before long, all five enormous fish had been gutted, cleaned, and scaled, their once-pristine bodies almost ready to be transformed into a delectable feast. Vegeta fileted the clean carcasses and cut the meat down to manageable pieces for Mrs. Briefs to handle. Goku and Krillin moved to the end of the line, using the backyard hose to rinse debris off of each piece before piling them up neatly.
"Well done, guys," Goku praised, wiping sweat from his brow. "That was some impressive teamwork."
Krillin nodded in agreement, a satisfied smile on his face. "Yeah, we make a pretty good team when we put our minds to it," he remarked, feeling a sense of pride in their accomplishment.
Just as they finished, Mrs. Briefs emerged from inside with a robotic rolling table, ready to collect the prepared fish. She praised the men for a job well done, her smile beaming with pride. "Excellent work, gentlemen! With your help, dinner might be ready as early as 6:30 PM now," she announced.
Goku drooled at the thought of the upcoming meal, his stomach rumbling, whereas Vegeta went inside to take a shower. Krillin kicked back on a deck recliner, not caring one iota that he smelled to high heaven for the moment. He basked in the late afternoon sunlight, knowing there would be plenty of time before dinner to freshen up after the messy work. The human Z warrior let out a contented sigh, enjoying the peace. "Ah, this is the life," he mused, closing his eyes and soaking in the serenity of the sunny afternoon. A thought passed through his mind and he opened his eyes, frowning slightly. "If only Yamcha, Tien, and Chiaotzu were here, too. I can hardly wait until the crew is complete once more," he uttered.
Goku stopped visibly salivating when he overheard Krillin. "Don't worry, Krill. September will be here sooner than you think," he remarked, padding over and taking a seat at the nearby round table beneath the sunbrella. "But yeah, I see your point. When everyone is back, everything'll finally be back to normal."
Krillin nodded solemnly at Goku's reassurance. "Yeah, I know," he replied, a hint of disappointment in his voice. "It's just tough knowing that we won't be able to bring everyone back all at once."
Goku shrugged, his expression brightening with a hint of excitement. "Well, Krillin, there might be a solution to that," he said, leaning forward. "Earlier this morning, I was talking to Morely and Dende about the dragon balls, and we came up with a plan to add two extra wishes to the September summoning."
Krillin's eyes widened. "Really? How would that work?" he asked, intrigued by the possibility of having more wishes. "That would be awesome! But why two? What would we do with the last wish?"
Goku leaned back in his chair. "What do ya mean? There's a long list of wishes needing to be made. Not even the five wishes in September will cover them all, but the Nameks expressed their willingness to stick around until after the New Year," he explained, his nose suddenly twitching. He raised his arm and took a whiff of himself. "Yuck! Man, I stink. I better go take a shower. Vegeta had the right idea."
"Wait, Goku!" Krillin interjected, causing the saiyan to pause. "I think you miscounted. We only need to make four wishes. Three to bring back Yamcha, Tien, and Chiaotzu and one to restore Namek. If there are five wishes, doesn't that mean we have one extra? Do you, uh, think I could use that one?"
Goku shook his head. "No, those four aren't the only wishes, but what did you want to wish for? You may have to wait until after the New Year, but if it's important, I'm sure we can fit it in."
Krillin blinked. "But… what are the other wishes beside the four I mentioned?"
Goku flashed Krillin an enigmatic grin. "Well, two of them are personal to others, so I'm not at liberty to say. Rest assured though, they are important. But what about yours? I didn't realize you had a wish."
Krillin's curiosity piqued as he leaned in closer to Goku, a hopeful expression on his face. "But Goku, you can tell me. I promise I won't tell anyone," he said earnestly. "I'm just really curious, you know?"
Goku chuckled, appreciating Krillin's honesty. He scratched his head sheepishly before responding, "I know you wouldn't spill the beans, Krillin, but the secrets aren't mine to tell. You know what I mean?"
Krillin nodded understandingly, though a hint of disappointment lingered in his expression. "I get it, Goku. I won't press you any further," he said, giving Goku a reassuring pat on the shoulder.
Goku smiled gratefully at Krillin's understanding. "Thanks, Krillin. I appreciate that," he replied, a sense of warmth filling his heart. "As for your wish, what is it? We might as well add it to the waitlist."
Krillin nodded in understanding of Goku's position, though his curiosity gnawed at him. "As for my wish, well, it's not as grand as bringing someone back to life or restoring a planet, but it's important to me."
Goku leaned in, intrigued. "What is it, Krillin?" he encouraged, genuinely interested in his friend's desire.
Krillin hesitated for a moment before speaking, his voice soft but determined. "I want to wish for peace, Goku. Peace for our world, for everyone living on it," he confessed, his gaze steady. "I want to see an end to the constant battles and conflicts, to see a future where we can all live without fear or violence."
Goku's eyes widened in understanding, touched by the sincerity of Krillin's wish. "That's a beautiful wish, Krillin," he said, placing a hand on his friend's shoulder. "But I don't think it's something either of the dragons will be powerful enough to ensure. It's worth a try though. We might as well ask."
Krillin nodded. "Yeah, Goku. I know it's a long shot, but it's something I've always dreamed of. And if there's even a small chance that the dragon balls can help make it a reality, then it's worth a try."
Goku smiled, impressed by Krillin's selfless wish. "You're right, Krillin. We should never underestimate the power of hope," he remarked, his whimsical gaze turning toward the sunset in the west.
Krillin nodded in agreement, a small smile playing on his lips. "Yeah, Goku. Maybe one day." An extended period of quietude passed between the two friends as they both became lost in contemplation. Eventually, Krillin broke the silence as a thought came to mind. "You know, Goku, now that I think of it… Gohan mentioned to me that, when they were all wished back to Earth from Namek, they panicked when they realized Vegeta had been wished back with them. Without you there, they thought for sure their fates were sealed. Do you have any idea why Vegeta didn't end up doing anything? He was so mean and scary when he first came. If you have any insight into what changed with him, I'd love to hear it."
Goku chuckled, rubbing the back of his head as he considered the question. "Well, it's hard to say for sure, but I think a big part of it might have had to do with Frieza's defeat," he speculated, his eyes distant as he recalled the events. "Vegeta spent his whole life under Frieza's thumb, doing whatever it took to survive by pleasing him. But when Frieza was gone, it was like a huge weight lifted from Vegeta's shoulders."
Krillin nodded thoughtfully, following Goku's train of thought. "Yeah, I can see how that would change things. Suddenly, he wasn't under anyone's control anymore. He was free to make his own choices," he mused, understanding dawning in his eyes. "But… I don't know, I didn't think this was the path he would choose. Without you here, Vegeta had the perfect opportunity to take over Earth, but he didn't take it. At first, Gohan said that he was really surprised. But I can't help but be suspicious. For a while, I thought he really might be planning something, but I'm not so sure anymore. What do you think?"
Goku nodded, acknowledging Krillin's concerns. "I understand why you'd be suspicious, Krillin. Vegeta definitely had the power and opportunity to cause trouble if he wanted to," he admitted, his expression thoughtful. "But I think deep down, Vegeta realized that there's more to life than power and domination. He's been on his own great journey of self-discovery ever since he joined us on Earth."
Krillin raised an eyebrow, intrigued by Goku's perspective. "A journey of self-discovery, huh? That's one way to put it," he remarked, a hint of skepticism in his tone. "But are you sure he's really changed for the better? What I mean is… did you get the chance to observe a change in him and what caused it?"
Goku pondered Krillin's question for a moment, furrowing his brow in deep thought. As memories of his interactions with Vegeta flooded back, his eyes lit up with recollection. "Actually, Krillin, now that you mention it, I did notice a pretty rapid change in Vegeta when he came to train with me in the Ox-Kingdom for a few days. For the first day or two, he was cold and reclusive, but then he started opening up. I think we have the Ox-King to thank for that. Maybe, he somehow reminded Vegeta of his own father."
Krillin listened intently as Goku recounted his experience spending time with Vegeta on the then-Fire Mountain. The mention of the Ox-King's influence intrigued him, and he leaned in closer, eager to hear more about it. "The Ox-King? Really?" Krillin asked, his curiosity piqued. "I wouldn't have guessed that he would have such a big impact on Vegeta. That's amazing though. How did he do it?"
Goku nodded, a smile tugging at his lips. "Yeah, it surprised me too at first," he admitted, "but there was something about the way the Ox-King treated Vegeta that seemed to resonate with him. I remember… after this one banquet that Vegeta missed because he wanted to stay in his room, I tried to track him down and found him and the Ox-King chatting in the Zen Garden. The Ox-King was telling him a story."
Krillin's eyes widened with interest as Goku recounted the scene in the Zen Garden. "A story, huh? What was it about?" he asked, leaning in even closer as he became captivated by what Goku was saying.
Goku furrowed his brows, scratching the back of his head. "Well, shoot! I guess I forgot because I was so focused on how Vegeta was reacting to the story. The Ox-King really had Vegeta's rapt attention, that's for sure. I guess if you really want to know, you could call up the Ox-King and ask."
Krillin nodded, considering Goku's suggestion. "Yeah, that might not be a bad idea," he replied thoughtfully. "It sounds like whatever the Ox-King said really struck a chord with Vegeta. It would be interesting to know more. Maybe, we can take a trip soon to visit Phoenix Mountain."
Goku's eyes popped open and he held up a finger. "That's it!"
Krillin blinked. "What's it?"
"Phoenix Mountain… Yes, now I remember!" Goku replied, looking excited at having recovered the memory. "The Ox-King was telling Vegeta The Tale of the Phoenix, one of those old stories he's told me a million and one times already. As I recall, he looked pretty thrilled to have a fresh audience to regale."
Krillin's eyebrows lifted in realization. "The Tale of the Phoenix? Wow, that sounds like quite the story…" he remarked, a spark of intrigue igniting in his eyes. "I've heard the Ox-King tell lots of different stories before, but I don't think I've heard that one. Do you happen to remember any of it?"
Goku nodded. "I'd certainly hope so given the insane number of times I've heard it by now. It's about the mythical bird that rises from the ashes after its destruction, symbolizing rebirth and renewal."
Krillin nodded thoughtfully, rubbing his chin. "Interesting… it must've had a big impact somehow."
"I'll bet it impacted Vegeta because of what happened to our homeworld," Goku theorized. Then he grinned, a sense of excitement building within him. "Yeah, I think you're right, Krillin. Hearing The Tale of the Phoenix might have been just what Vegeta needed to find a new perspective on life."
Krillin remained silent for a moment, lost in deep contemplation as he considered Goku's theory. "You know, Goku, that actually makes a lot of sense," he conceded. "But I still can't help but wonder what exactly was said during that conversation. I think I should definitely find out more."
Goku grinned at Krillin's response, sharing his enthusiasm. "Absolutely! You can take a trip to Phoenix Mountain to visit Gohan," he suggested. "While you're there, try to have a chat with the Ox-King and see if he can offer more insight into how Vegeta's time there might have impacted him."
Krillin's eyes brightened with excitement at the prospect of unraveling the mystery further. "That sounds like a great plan, Goku!" he exclaimed, feeling a surge of anticipation. "I'm definitely on board with that. I'll go visit Gohan and the Ox-King after my next training session with Aloha and see what I can learn."
Goku beamed. "Awesome! Let me know what he says. For now, let's go get washed up for dinner."
Krillin and Goku exchanged nods before heading to the men's bathhouse in the compound.
…
The Rainbow Capsule Library was a place of unparalleled tranquility, a haven where time seemed to slow down and the outside world faded away. Alpha sat amidst towering shelves filled with books of all shapes and sizes, completely engrossed in the words before him. His eyes scanned the pages eagerly, his mind lost in the midst of discovering what the underground club had to offer. It was more than just an LGBT sex club, it was a subterranean world of fantasy and possibility. Though nervous about venturing down for the first time, being a virgin and all, Alpha could not help being transfixed with the possibilities.
As he turned the page of his current read, Alpha heard footsteps approaching, breaking the silence of the library. He looked up to see Lamya, her figure silhouetted against the library's ambient lighting. A sheen of sweat glistened on her ebony brow, indicating that she had recently engaged in physical exertion of some kind. "Hey there, Alpha," Lamya greeted, her voice warm and friendly as she approached. "I can see you've been here for quite a while. Still planning to attend the upcoming march?"
Alpha glanced up from his book, a smile spreading across his face. "Hey, Lamya," he replied, putting the item down and setting it aside. He hopped up, running a hand through his short hair. "Yeah, I'm definitely planning to go. It's an important cause. Speaking of which, I don't want to get you prematurely excited, but I think I might have managed to recruit an adorable new gay couple to the cause, too."
Lamya's eyes lit up with intrigue at Alpha's words, her enthusiasm matching his own. "That's fantastic news, Alpha!" she exclaimed, a bright smile spreading across her face. "You're really making a difference, you know? It's amazing to see how one person's efforts can bring more people into the fold."
Alpha grinned, feeling a surge of pride at Lamya's words. "Thanks, Lamya," he said, his voice filled with appreciation. "But honestly, it's largely thanks to you and the support you gave me. Your guidance and encouragement really helped me step out of my comfort zone for the first time in a while."
Lamya waved off his thanks with a dismissive gesture. "Oh, please, it's the least I could do," she replied, her tone humble. "But seriously, every new person you recruit means our message reaches even farther. It's like a ripple effect. Your efforts go twice as far when the people you recruit go on to recruit others."
Alpha nodded in understanding. "Agreed. Here's the thing. This new couple, one of them for sure said that he wants to attend and he's planning to ask the other guy, too. He's a student of mine at Capsule Corp. I'm teaching an adult sex ed class with just this one student because he needed guidance, having only just realized he's gay… or possibly bi, but he's interested in a gay relationship at present. However, I'm the only other LGBT person that he's ever met, so I thought maybe it would be a good idea to bring him here and introduce him to the rest of his new community before we all meet up at the march."
Lamya listened attentively as Alpha shared his plans, nodding in understanding as he explained the situation with the new couple he had recruited. "That sounds like a great idea, Alpha," she said, impressed by his thoughtfulness. "It's important for newcomers to feel welcomed and supported, especially if they're still exploring their identity and perhaps only just came out of the closet. We're here to support them."
Alpha smiled at Lamya's words, grateful for her encouragement. "Thanks, Lamya," he replied. "I really want to make sure he feels comfortable and accepted in our community… and his prospective boyfriend, too. I think introducing them to everyone here will be a big step in the right direction."
Lamya nodded in agreement. "Absolutely. And I'd be more than happy to help with that," she offered graciously. "I'm available next Friday evening if you want to bring either one or both of them by the Lounge. We can introduce them to some of the regulars and make sure they feel right at home."
Alpha's eyes lit up with glee at Lamya's offer. "That would be fantastic, Lamya! Thank you so much," he exclaimed, feeling a sense of relief knowing that he would not have to navigate the introduction alone. "I'll talk to him soon and see if he's available. I think he'll really appreciate the opportunity to meet everyone. But, well… FYI, there's a good chance my student will experience some culture shock when he comes. He seems like the kind of guy to have never set eyes on a drag queen before in his life."
Lamya's eyes sparkled with excitement at the prospect of welcoming a newcomer into their community. "Oh, I would be honored to help initiate him into our community," she expressed. "It's always special to witness someone take their first steps into this vibrant and supportive environment."
Alpha nodded in agreement, appreciating Lamya's eagerness to extend a warm welcome. "I'm sure he'll be grateful for the chance to meet everyone and learn more about other people like him," he remarked, feeling reassured by Lamya's support. "I think it'll be a positive experience for him to see the diversity and inclusivity that our community embraces. If you can do me one favor though… Could you go around and notify the staff that this new guy is coming? He may unknowingly ask questions that sound rude. It's not because he means to be offensive at all, he's just genuinely ignorant, but also extremely curious."
Lamya nodded understandingly at Alpha's request, her expression thoughtful. "Of course, Alpha. I'll make sure to inform the staff and prepare them for any unexpected questions or reactions that he might have," she assured him, her tone laidback. "It's important for people to feel they aren't being judged, especially newcomers who might be unfamiliar with how things are in the Rainbow Capsule Lounge."
Alpha smiled gratefully at Lamya's understanding. "Thanks, Lamya. I appreciate your help with this," he said sincerely, feeling relieved that he could count on her support. "I'll talk to him beforehand and let him know what to expect as well. I want to make sure he feels accepted from the moment he arrives."
Lamya nodded in agreement, a beautiful smile gracing her lips. "That sounds like a great plan, Alpha. Communication is key, and I'm sure he appreciates your guidance," she remarked, her voice filled with encouragement. "I'm looking forward to meeting him and his prospective boyfriend. It's always exciting to welcome new members into our community and show them the love and support we have to offer."
With their plans in place and preparations underway, Alpha and Lamya felt confident that they could provide a warm and inclusive welcome for the newcomers. As they parted ways, the young genius felt a sense of anticipation for the upcoming introduction and the positive impact it might have on Goku's journey of self-acceptance and belonging within their community. Alpha returned his book to the shelf for now and headed back up to the surface, as the hour had grown late. After decapsulating the hoverbike he had borrowed from work, he made his way back around sundown, unbothered by the traffic.
