Chapter 9: Human
In the town of Wick, Scotland stood a small stone house, semi-detached from another, with a large back garden.
Inside the house, Ayal sat at a computer, talking through some coding to a rubber duck on his desk. Marissa sat at her own computer, typing up a report for the Security Council. Titilayo stood in the garden, lifting some weights with Dante spotting her.
Sitting in Hound's alt mode, Jan stared out the widow as they passed Noss Primary School, his school, and they eventually passed Wick High School, where Patty went.
Patty looked over at the form beside her. "Nervous?"
"A little."
"It'll be great, Silk!"
The night before:
"So this holoform is solid light?"
"Yep," Ayal pulled up a program on the computer. "Now, we just have to make your human look and then you can walk around."
Saber's hand lay on her shoulder. "It's like controlling another form far away. It's honestly easiest to just go sit in your room and relax as you focus on running that other form. I do it all the time."
"But what will my name be? What if people ask me questions?"
"Don't worry." Titilayo's hand rested on hers. "We have a story already made up. You can just use the name Silk, and we will say that you're my niece who has been living in America for a long time."
The youngling smiled. "Ok."
"Then let's make your form."
Silk felt a little strange sitting in Hound's alt mode. Everything looked so… big from this angle.
Looking down at herself, she could see the dark skin her holoform had, and a little bit of her curly black hair that hung in two braids on either side of her head. The form wore a green button up shirt over blue shorts; a long cream vest hung down to her knees, and she wore brown boots and glasses.
Patty said she looked adorable.
"Here we are." Hound stopped outside the house and the kids got out. "Have fun!"
"We will."
The back garden gate opened almost immediately. Titi stepped out with a smile. "Come on inside. I need to take a quick shower and I'll be ready to go."
"Ok!"
Silk took a few steps, still feeling a little wobbly in this form, but at least she didn't feel the constant pain.
"Just take it slow." Patty grinned, taking her arm gently. "I'll give you the tour of the house."
Following behind, Silk couldn't help but be amazed at everything. She'd watched TV since she got here and saw a few things, but to see it now right in front of her was something truly special.
Marissa came downstairs as the kids came inside. "Hi, kids."
"Hi!"
"Silk, do you have your cover story down?"
The youngling nodded. "Kup and I practiced last night with Saber."
"Good." She patted Jan on the head. "And Ayal's going to set up Beat Saber for us to play while the other girls are out."
"Sweet!"
A few minutes later, Titi came inside. "Ready girls?"
"Yep!"
"Yes… what are we doing anyway?"
As they went down and out the front door, Patty pulled out her phone and began texting. "We're going to an arcade and then to see a movie! I have lots of friends who wanted to meet you, though I didn't want to overwhelm you so only two of you will be joining us today. They'll meet us at the arcade."
"Alright." That sounded much better than a bunch of new people.
Walking down the road, Silk took in every little detail.
The people working, cars driving, music playing-
Life being lived.
Lives so different and yet not so different from lives of her people on Eukaris.
"Patty!"
"Hey guys!"
Silk felt herself tense as she saw two more human younglings waiting outside a building that blasted loud and exciting music.
"Thanks for coming!" Patty grinned. "Guys, meet Silk. She's new in town and doesn't know anyone yet."
"I'm Ai!" Waved a girl with short brown hair, wearing a blue uniform.
"Name's Kelly. Nice to meet you." A girl with long black hair, wearing a mauve purple jacket, popped out from behind Ai.
Silk blinked, waving nervously as she stepped closer to Titilayo. "Nice to meet you too."
"Do you like video games?"
"I've never really played them."
Ai gasped. "What!? We HAVE to fix that!"
"We'll show you all the best games!" Kelly grabbed Silk's hand, causing the girl to jump a little. "Come on!"
Titilayo laughed as the kids pulled the youngling into the arcade.
Silk blinked, her sensors assailed by lights and sounds all around. Games filled the room, blinking and making noises.
"Don't worry about the money." Kelly pulled out a plastic card. "I've got it."
Leaning over, Ai whispered. "She's rich, and the owner's son totally has a crush on her."
Crush?
Patty giggled at Silk's confused expression. "It means, he likes her romantically."
"Oh…"
"Are you done paying!? I want to play!"
"Done! I got us all the unlimited cards." Handing them all a different plastic card, she grinned. "We can play as long as we want, and it comes with tickets to the movie theater upstairs."
"No scary movies." Titilayo said quickly. "For Silk's sake. She's been dealing with nightmares lately, and we don't want to make them worse."
"No problem. There's a romcom playing and a cartoon."
"Perfect."
Silk didn't know how much fun games like this could be, but she soon found out.
She loved it!
All except for the shooting games.
The first one she even saw made her shudder. So, they avoided those.
"So, this is called basketball?"
"Yep! Just try and throw the ball into that hoop as many times as you can in 30 seconds." Ai grinned. "I'll go first."
"And kick all our butts." Patty sighed.
Kelly leaned against the basketball game machine. "So, Silk, will you be coming to school?"
"School?"
"Seriously? What rock have you been under!?"
The youngling flinched, but Titi's hands rested on her shoulder. "Kelly, Silk has been very sheltered for a long time. She doesn't know much about the world, and she won't be going to school for a bit. She'll be doing homeschool. We don't want to overwhelm her."
Kelly gasped. "I am so sorry. Does she need support? A therapist? A counselor? I can help pay for one to help her get better."
Therapist? Counselor?
Whatever those things were, at least it sounded like Kelly was trying to help.
"Thank you for the offer." Titilayo chuckled, gently patting Silk's head. "She's already in recovery, and we have plenty of people helping her out. And just being her friend would probably be a great help."
Friend…
She remembered Spinneret back home.
How was she?
Did she think Silk was dead?
Had she moved on and found a new best friend?
"Silk? You ok?"
"Huh?"
"You're crying?"
Oh! Wiping her eyes, the youngling sighed. "I'm just thinking about an old friend… I don't know if I'll ever see her again."
"I'm sorry." Ai took her hands. "But you can make new ones here. We have other friends too, when you're ready to meet them."
Looking into Ai's soft brown eyes, for just a moment, Silk saw Spinneret's face. "Ok… thank you, Ai."
"Don't mention it. Now, see if you can beat my score." Turning Silk around, she playfully pushed her toward the game.
Silk laughed, wiping away the last tear on her face.
With a stretch, Silk walked out of her room, her holoform now turned off after a LONG day with her new friends.
"How was it?" Moonracer grinned.
"It was awesome!" Doing the stretches Velocity taught her, the youngling said, "We played games, and then we saw a movie. It was this really cute movie about a puppy. Titi said I can come whenever I want and spend time at the house with my holoform."
"Did you enjoy spending time with the other younglings?" Elita asked.
"I did. It was like spending time with my old friend, Spinneret, back on Eukaris." She sighed. "I didn't realize how much I missed my old friend, but at least I have more now. I really like Patty; she's probably my best friend, but Ai and Kelly are super nice too."
Elita smiled. "I like Ai. She's a good kid."
Saber nodded. "And Kelly may be a bit on the spoiled side-"
"A bit?"
"-but she has a good heart."
Silk nodded. "And they have other friends too. I can't wait to meet them later!"
As the youngling chatted on about her day with Moonracer and Nautica, Elita watched with a smile. She remembered the wounded, scared youngling Silk arrived as, but ever since she got to go to the rainforest, she'd come alive.
Vibrant.
Excited.
Curious.
Still a little shy, but Elita understood. Her own sparkmate, for all his abilities as a military leader, was still that quiet archivist she fell in love with. And his shyness made him gentle and contemplative. And Silk's made her curious and kind.
If only he was here to see her.
But he was off…
Battling the Decepticons among the stars.
"That's one of the humans!" Blackjack pointed at the screen, specifically at Titilayo.
"That's not why I showed you this." Hissed Shadow Striker. "That youngling." She pointed to one dressed in green. "When I was scanning, I found an energy signature in this area. This youngling is a holoform."
Slipstream smirked. "So, they're letting her run around with the humans. Interesting. Keep an eye out for that little holoform again. Perhaps Silk Spinner will slip up and reveal something."
"Yes ma'am."
Hope you enjoyed!
For those of you who don't know, the friends of Patty are based on other characters from Transformers. Kelly is from "Robots in Disguise". Ai is from the "Binaltech Asterick" comics. There will be more kids like this to come.
