Deko got up a bit later than usual because she slept like crap last night. Nevertheless, she had enough energy to get out of bed and fix herself breakfast. Even after having a cup of Sencha green tea and revitalizing her mouth with some minty toothpaste, she still felt a bit groggy, so she decided to take a day off from hero work. Because she didn't feel like going anywhere, she dressed very simply, wearing nothing but an All Might T-shirt and a white pair of panties.
After doing whatever she needed to do in the morning, Deko curled up on the couch and turned on the TV, which was tuned in to ABC7, now playing a news program:
"Good morning, everyone," said anchorwoman Cheyenne Smith, a Black woman with shoulder-length hair. "In today's top news story, Tommy Waters – better known as the pro hero 'Captain Famous' – was found dead early this morning in Soho. Waters, 42 years old, was perhaps best known for stopping the notorious villain Destro, leader of the Meta Liberation Army. Police refuse to speculate on the exact circumstances of his death, but are treating it as a murder. Meanwhile, people all around the world are mourning his death."
The video feed switched to an interview with a guy named George Chu:
"I remember Captain Famous very well. He saved me and my family from the League of Villains, and it's sad that he's gone because he was such a great hero."
Deko shut off the TV in disgust.
(If only you knew what a cruel, abusive man he was.) thought Deko.
After turning off the TV, Deko fired up her laptop and opened up the official website for the government of New York City. After going through a couple of links, she found what she was looking for: an application for founding new hero agencies. While she wouldn't have minded going to fill out an application in person, she appreciated the ability to do it online, from the convenience of her own home. The application consisted of standard questions such as name, address, date of birth, contact information and Social Security number, but it also consisted of more hero-specific questions such as hero name, her reason for founding the agency, and it required her to attach sufficient documentation of her activities as a hero. While this took some time, she felt it was worth it. Once she submitted her application, she received a message thanking her for her application and telling her that her application would be reviewed and that she'd have her answer within the week.
After submitting her application, Deko decided to browse the Internet, going to the World Heroes' Forum first. Unsurprisingly, a lot of the recent threads were about Captain Famous, many mourning his untimely death, but more than a few claiming that he'd committed some abusive and uncouth acts. Even if she was disgusted that people were treating him as a god, it at least gave her some sense of relief knowing that she wasn't the only one who'd had bad experiences with him. Soon enough, reading about Captain Famous reminded Deko too much about what had happened last night, so she decided to play some video games. However, those got boring quickly, and not knowing what else to do, she decided "screw it" and went out to do some hero work. Even this felt rather empty, knowing that there were heroes out there behaving in a less-than-heroic manner. The only thing that gave Deko any sense of relief was seeing All Might at Variety Coffee Roasters, and he took notice of her disposition:
"Midoriya, you don't seem too well. Is everything OK?"
Deko shook her head. "No, it's not."
"Why, what's the matter?"
Deko leaned closer to All Might. "Can you keep a secret?"
"Of course."
Deko whispered to All Might:
"Last night, I met Captain Famous at a bar. We seemed to hit it off, but after taking a little walk, he…he…he tried to rape me and I ended up killing him!" Deko formed tear in her eyes.
All Might gasped. "That's terrible! Did you report this to anybody?"
Deko shook her head. "I'm sorry, I just…I don't feel comfortable. Besides, who would believe me?"
All Might put a hand on Deko's shoulder. "I believe you, and I promise I'll help out any way I can."
Deko nodded solemnly. "Thanks, All Might. Right now, I need to process this my own way. I hope you understand."
All Might nodded. "I do, and I have faith in you."
"Once again, thank you."
"You're welcome."
After finishing her coffee and saying "bye" to All Might, Deko was exiting the coffee shop when an NYPD sergeant accosted her:
"Excuse me, Deko…"
"Yes?"
"The mayor wanted ya to speak at the funeral of Captain Famous. She figured that maybe it'd give people some hope if another famous hero were there to speak out in support of him."
Deko froze. On one hand, she felt she couldn't sincerely support the man who tried to rape her, but on the other hand, she felt it would be rude to refuse an offer from Mayor Lucille Matsuda, and she also feared that if she spoke up about his heinous act too soon, then it would not only permanently damage her reputation, but also result in mass hysteria. Thus, against her better judgment…
"All right, I'll do it."
"Thank you, Deko," said the sergeant. "Knew we could count on ya."
Deko put on a fake smile. Inside, though, she was more dead than Captain Famous.
The day of Captain Famous' funeral, it was raining in New York. Millions of people, not just from the Big Apple, but around the world, had shown up to pay their respects: pro heroes, police officers, firefighters, active duty military personnel, military veterans, even ordinary civilians. A bagpipe band was playing tunes such as "The Minstrel Boy". At the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Mayor Lucille Matsuda – a middle-aged woman with mid-length, graying feathered hair – stepped up to the podium to give a eulogy for Captain Famous:
"I may not have been close friends with Captain Famous, but I knew him nevertheless, and based on what I knew about him, he was one of the kindest, most selfless heroes who never let fame go to his head. He was always there to lend a helping hand to people in need, and the world is a lesser place without him. It is my sincere hope that his death will not have been in vain and that heroes everywhere will continue to work hard to fill the void left by his passing, because one hero's loss affects all heroes. Now, I'd like to turn the floor over to the #1 Pro: Deko."
With great reluctance, Deko stepped up to the podium and gave a brief eulogy:
"Hi. Um…I didn't really know Captain Famous, but I knew of him, and well…his death is a tragedy, and I hope no other heroes suffer the way he suffered."
Deko quickly fled from the podium to let the next person step up, much to people's confusion and consternation.
After the funeral, Deko headed straight home and concluded her hero work for the day. All she really did for the rest of the night was play video games. Going to sleep was an ordeal for her because she had a nightmare about what Captain Famous did to her and she woke up crying. All she could really hope for was that her application would be accepted sooner rather than later.
Criticism is gold. Negativity and nitpicking are pyrite.
