Rear-view Town
Chapter 10
Edward knew he slipped up when he lost his damn phone. It must have fallen out of his pocket when he rushed to save one of his newest creations. He had stayed in Rio long enough to pick the best candidates for his plans. He had listened to each of their thoughts before he made his choice to change them. He wanted only the most ruthless, nasty rapists, thieves, and the most mentally unstable people there was. Unbeknownst to the ones that called him family, there was a huge secret that none of them knew.
When he made his trip state side, he found a place close enough to Forks to hold up in. It was cozy enough to fulfill his goals. It wouldn't be a permanent place for what he was going to do, and he hated that he had to push a few of his plans forward when he found out Bella was getting married and pregnant. He nearly ripped an entire warehouse of stuffed animals to shreds.
As he reached over and switched on his laptop, his mind wondered. He was still flaming mad at his ex-fiancé. He had set out small spy cameras around Carlisle and Esme's house. Lucky for him, he was able to slip onto the reservation undetected and did the same as soon as he learned which house Bella was now living in.
In his mind, Bella had always been his since the first time he saw her. She was only five years old when she wondered off away from Charlie. Edward nearly passed out from her scent alone, but he knew he couldn't take her at such a young age. He had lived long enough to know that patience always paid off in the end.
Edward had talked to the small child and pointed her back into the direction of her father. Charlie was none the wiser when she stepped back into his line of sight. He'd been trying to find some new clothes for his daughter. She was starting kindergarten and wished his wife was there to help him. He missed her so much that he had to fight off the tears that always pooled in the corner of his eyes as Renee's beautiful face appeared in his mind.
From that very first day, Edward kept his eyes on the little girl. He never missed a birthday or Christmas. He would leave small presents for her on their porch by the door. Over the years Charlie had stopped wondering where the gifts were coming from. He had assumed it was a neighbor and never asked.
The weeks before Bella was starting her freshman year in high school, Edward had told Carlisle and Esme that he was coming home to give stability another shot. The years that he was gone, he watched Bella grow up. He never wanted to share that information with her, but the way things were going, he was contemplating on telling her. He realized that he may not have any choice. He was still reeling over the stupid way Bella had ended their relationship. She was nothing special; a typical average girl, and he wondered how the Quileute could imprint on someone with no native American heritage. His assumption proved him wrong that imprinting can happen upon any human.
As his laptop came to life, he clicked on the camera icon to pull up the live feed from all his locations. He was fuming from his knowledge of Bella's pregnancy. He was jealous, plain and simple. He could never give her children the way she wanted, and he hated what he was. He could clearly see that she was happy with the way her life was playing out. Edward still wanted her back regardless. He could raise her babies as his own. Determination was his vow.
The live feed from the nine cameras came to life. Only two of them had any form of movement. The lights at Bella's house were lit with less than a handful of people wondering around inside.
The feed from Carlisle's house was very active. Wolves were everywhere and more than he had originally counted. They had to know he had something to do with the dead bodies he left for them. Edward tried to feel remorse for the unfortunate bleeders he had lured away from their homes. They knew Edward and trusted him because he had been Bella's boyfriend their last few years of high school. He had never given any of them a reason to question his actions. They were people Bella knew and cared for, so taking them was an easy choice.
Something in the back of his mind kept telling him that he was going about everything the wrong way. The stupid imprint bond between Bella and Paul was a whole lot stronger than he anticipated. He was bound and determined to find a way to get rid of Paul without killing him. That would only leave Bella in a vegetative state for the rest of her life, and he couldn't have that happening. He knew there had to be a way.
Edward kept strategizing until the sun started to come up the next day. His mind was still drawing a blank. Killing Angela and Eric was a little overboard, but he couldn't change that now. Dropping his phone had let the proverbial cat out of the bag. If he could get away with it, he would snatch Bella up and take her somewhere that no one could find them. Even though he had been through medical school at least a half a dozen times, he wasn't kidnapping a pregnant Bella. He was hugely refusing to deliver her babies. It made him sick to his stomach to even think of Bella being with someone else other than him. She was supposed to be his.
He sat for a few more hours as he thought about how to take her and where. He was sure he was finally losing his mind.
After Jacob was able to go home to his own bed, Paul and Bella decided it was time to finally go home. Paul checked all the doors and windows to make sure they were locked. He was sure Edward could get in if he really wanted to, but Bella needed that little extra feeling of security.
As they lay in bed that night, both with hands on their babies, each of their minds were in overdrive. Paul needed to make sure that his family was safe; all of them if he could help it. He knew the entire reservation would cut a bitch if they needed to protect someone.
In Bella's mind, she was thinking the same thing as Paul. She worried about Charlie because he didn't live on the reservation. She worried that Edward would take her dad to use as leverage against her, but was Edward really and truly capable of doing things she feared the most? Was he a murderer? She wondered if she knew Edward at all the entire time they were together. What secrets hadn't he shared with her?
The couple finally drifted off to sleep. Their minds still reeled with a ton of possibilities about Edward. The biggest priority was to stay on high alert until he was dealt with.
Over the next few days, Bella and Paul had decided to postpone their honeymoon. Bella didn't feel safe leaving everyone to go have fun. She wanted to know that her entire family was safe before she went to frolic in the sun.
The elders had given Esme permission to work at Paul and Bella's house to decorate a room for the babies. Carlisle had joined her the first day so he could check up on the wolves that had been hurt. Paul was completely healed as was Jacob. As soon as they phased, their rapid healing kicked in and mended all their injuries. Considering Jacob was hurt worse than all the others, he was still a little stiff, and Carlisle assured him he would be perfectly healed with no stiffness after he phased a few more times.
Two more wolves had phased, making the Quileute wolf pack grow to twenty. Jared Vasquez was one of them. He was 16 years old and imprinted on Rebecca. No one was ready for another Black to be imprinted on. The hackles on Billy and Jacob spiked with over protectiveness. She was the youngest out of all the Black children, and Billy wasn't ready for his baby girls to grow up. Becca wasn't too happy about it at first, but Bella, Emily and Claire had made plans to have a girl's day and explain everything to her. Rachel wanted to tag along with Cora's encouragement. She knew it wouldn't be long before her imprint found her.
Time seemed to speed up where Bella and Paul were concerned. Everything had been quiet. The wolves were back to their regular patrolling shifts. They were still on high alert because Edward was still out there somewhere. They knew it was all the calm before the storm.
Bella's first appointment with Tasha took a surprising turn. The triplets would be arriving sooner rather than later. Of course, Bella and Paul were extra nervous, but what expecting parent wouldn't be. In a matter of just a few more weeks, their babies would be making their appearance. Their growth looked excellent, per Tasha and the ultrasound she performed on their first appointment. The only real issue Paul and Bella were facing was what names they would pick for their babies.
Jake and Nessie were getting along great. They were still getting to know one another. Jake was constantly bringing her flowers and small gifts. He had taken up wood carving and perfected wolf figurines. Nessie had a shelf dedicated to his small trinkets and loved every single one of them. She still felt a little nervous around Jake, and she knew he would never hurt her in any way. He was like a big, cuddly bear that was quickly capturing her heart in every way possible.
With everything quiet around the reservation, the family had finally convinced Billy to let Carlisle operate on him. He was reluctant, of course, but he had been in a wheelchair for far too long. It had become a huge part of his life because he was afraid of the pain he would have to endure during the process. He imagined running around the yard with his grandchildren, and he wanted that more than anything. Who knew that becoming a grandparent would make a life changing decision for anyone. Especially stubborn Billy Black.
Cora was just as excited. As far as anyone was concerned, Paul was her son, and his babies are her grandchildren. Paul and Bella were encouraging her in every way possible to take on the role and she gladly accepted with no hesitation.
The closer it came for the babies to arrive Paul struggled every day to keep his nerves at bay. There were a few times he had snapped at the pack while they were patrolling. They snapped right back making it known that they wouldn't put up with his errant bullshit. He needed the attitude adjustment, and he got it.
Bella was miserable, plain and simple. She had grown to the point that she could barely walk. Her hips ached no matter what she was doing. Her feet were starting to swell, and her heartburn was so bad that it felt like it could singe the leaves on the trees if she burped loud enough. Worst of all, she constantly had bubble gut. Her gas was so stinky that Paul slept on the couch just to breathe easier. He was afraid to have sex with her just in case he humped gas right out of her. It was a struggle, but he was thankful he didn't have to endure an entire nine months of stinky booty Bella.
At Bella's next prenatal appointment, Tasha had scheduled an ultrasound to check on the babies. During that time, they were making the appointment for a c-section. Bella was ready to have her body back. She couldn't wait to breathe normally, again.
Well, that was until she reached up into a cabinet to get a tea pitcher. One of the babies kicked her so hard that it took her breath away. She gripped the edge of the counter and took deep breaths to try and ease her discomfort. She calmed herself, relaxing enough to stand up straight again, but then she felt warm liquid run down the inside of her thighs. "Ahhh...shit." She was glad to be wearing a sundress.
Paul was still at work, so Bella made her way to the bedroom where she pulled out some clean clothes. She opened her mind up to Paul to let him know. "Hey, sweetie." She grabbed a towel when she walked into the bathroom.
"Hi, Angel. You okay?" Paul had stopped what he was doing so he could concentrate on what his wife was saying.
"Yes and no," she replied. "I need you home. My water broke."
"Shit, okay. Give me fifteen minutes."
Paul yelled out to Sam that he needed to go because it was baby time. Jakes ears perked up. "She in labor?"
"Her water broke!" Paul kicked his work boots off and grabbed his sneakers. "Call mom and dad. I'm headed out, bro."
Bella wanted to clean up and change her clothes, so while she waited for Paul to get home, she hopped in the shower to wash her bottom half off. When she stepped out of the shower, she heard sirens from an emergency vehicle and knew it had to be her dad. As soon as she got clothes on, she made her way to the front door. As she opened it, the roar of her father's police cruiser and her husband's truck, stopped right in front of their house.
Paul was out of his truck the second he threw it in park. Bella smiled as she watched him take the stairs three at a time. "I hope it's time for those babies or your husband's getting a big fat speeding ticket." Charlie was right behind Paul taking the steps two at a time.
Bella giggled. "Yes, daddy. My water broke."
Paul kissed his wife as soon as he landed on the porch. "Your bag is already in the car, so get your shoes on."
"I just need my slides and I'm ready." Bella watched as Paul started zipping around the house to make sure they had everything just as he located her shoes. He helped her slip them on, grabbed a drink from the fridge and flew right by Bella as she waited to be helped down the stairs to her car. "Paul, honey?"
He turned to look at her. "Shit!" He cursed. "Sorry, Angel."
Charlie shook his head at his son in-law only to remember the day Renee had gone into labor with Bella. He was just as scatter brained. He nearly forgot Renee as he threw her bag in his cruiser. When he got in the car, he looked up and saw his wife laughing at him. He was no better than his son in-law becoming a first-time father.
As soon as Bella was buckled in, Charlie gave them a police escort to the hospital. Bella had called her doctor's office on their way. When they arrived, they were directed to the third floor to labor and delivery. Thankfully, labor pains decided to hold off until Bella was prepped and ready for her c-section. She had straddled the tiny table to get her spinal. She was relieved the moment they called Paul into the room with her. Both of them were nervous, but the moment Paul sat down next to her head, their nervousness calmed. "You ready for this?" He asked her. He was dressed head to toe in surgical clothing.
Bella released a nervous laugh. "It's way too late to back out now." She was shaking because she was freezing to death.
"I'm nervous," Paul whispered. "What if they come out all hairy and shit?"
Bella couldn't help the huge belly laugh that came from her mouth. "You're silly," she said shaking her head as much as she could with an oxygen mask over her face. "We'll love them no matter what. They're our babies and they'll be beautiful."
"I know," Paul said then sighed as he slouched his shoulders in defeat. "We don't even have names for them."
"We'll know when we see them."
The girls were born first only a minute apart, and their brother made an appearance two minutes later.
The room was filled with the cries of three newborn babies. Bella's teeth chattered as she looked from left to right to try and catch a glimpse of her children. "Paul, go be with them."
Paul leaned in close to his wife's face. "They'll bring them over here in just a minute."
A tear slid over Bella's cheek. "Please go check on them."
He did as his wife asked and took the twenty steps over to the warming tables to check on the new members of his family. He had a permanent smile plastered on his face. His heart melted the moment his eyes landed on his babies. Then he wished his mom was still alive to meet them. She would be so in love with them and even though she lied to him his whole life, he understood why she did it; he understood the pain she felt when her one true love imprinted on someone other than her. He understood and forgave her the moment he laid eyes on his son. The girls tripled that forgiveness. He had mentally put himself into his mother's shoes for two seconds and felt her pain. He knew why his mom took him away and thanked every spirit for the life he was now living.
The girls were crying as their brother was content with being poked and checked over. They were all so tiny. Paul was a little scared to even hold them. All three could probably fit in one of his huge hands.
"Paul?" Bella called out.
Paul looked over towards his wife and smiled. "I'll be right there, Angel." He couldn't take his eyes off of his babies, and the moment they were wrapped up he walked over and sat down next to Bella. "They're bringing them over." He pulled his phone out so he could get a picture of the first time Bella laid eyes on their babies.
"They're so beautiful," Bella expressed through her tears. Paul kept taking pictures; he wanted to make sure he had enough to share with anyone who would look at them. Then they felt it. The imprint binding that pulled Bella and Paul together had tightened. "Did you feel that?"
Paul looked down at Bella as tears began to stream down his face. "Yes." He smiled a huge toothy grin. "I love you, Angel."
An hour later, Bella was settled into her room. She didn't want to put the babies down for a second. They were the new loves of her life. "We need to name them." Paul took his son.
"Well," Paul started. "How about Creedance Charles for our little man?"
Bella's eyes welled up with tears. "You want him to have my dad's name?"
"Both of our dad's," Paul stated. "My dad is William Creedance."
Bella smiled. "I never knew that."
"Well, now you do." Paul kissed her cheek. "You have any names you'd like for the girls?"
"Can you get the pink- and purple-colored socks out of their diaper bag?" Bella moved around the best she could as she adjusted herself. She wanted to lay the girls down and free their feet from the blankets wrapped around them. "Since they're identical, we'll need to be able to tell them apart." She took the socks when Paul returned to his spot next to her. "Pink will be Ember Renee and Purple will be Malia Grace."
As soon as Paul and Bella had names for their babies set in stone, it was time for the entire population of LaPush to finally meet their new residents.
Billy and Cora came in first to meet their grandchildren. The moment they shared their names, Billy had tears in his eyes. "I don't know what to say." He stared down at his newborn grandson. "He looks just like you when you were a newborn." Billy looked up at his son Paul. "I missed so much when your mother took you away from me." He used the tip of his finger and traced along Creed's nose. "I feel like we were given a second chance. I hate that Malia died before you found your way home, but I guess everything she left for you was her way of saying she was sorry."
Paul pulled a chair over and sat next to his father. "I'm not going anywhere, dad."
Billy looked up to see everyone looking at them. "My grandson, Creedance Charles."
"These two are Ember and Malia." Cora smiled. "My sister would be so proud."
"She would," Billy agreed.
Bella reached up and took her husband's hand. They were watching as their babies were passed around one by one. Their hearts were overflowing with happiness. "I love you," she tells him. "I don't think I could love you anymore than what I do right now."
Paul leaned over and gently kissed his wife. "And I love you more."
"I'm so emotional, right now. I'm crying then smiling, then crying more and smiling at the same time." Bella watched as Jake took one of the babies. Creed had finally made his way around the room and ended with his Uncle Jake. "Look at him. He's going to be such a great father one day."
Paul smiled at his wife. "I'm sure he will be."
Jake took a seat next to his mother. He held his very first nephew and hoped that one day he could have a family of his own with Nessie. His feelings for her were changing. The love he felt for her, already, ran deep and only grew deeper. "Hey little man. I'm your uncle Jake."
Thank you!
