Roman isn't really snooping through Gerri's possessions when he finds the photo album. He's trying to be helpful, tidying Gerri's desk so she can work from home more effectively. Part of him is curious to see how Waystar is running without the Roys.
The album, which is fraying at the sides, is in a drawer, on top of Gerri's appointment diary and her address book. Gerri is quite good with technology, but she still insists on keeping some things on paper, just in case. Boomers.
Gerri doesn't keep many personal things at Roman's apartment, she's a minimalist and not very sentimental, so Roman is intrigued when he opens the photo album. On the first page there's a large picture of Gerri in a wedding dress, standing next to a suited Baird. Gerri looks to be in her twenties, with long blonde curls spilling under her white veil. Baird looks older than her by at least a decade, but still younger than Roman has ever seen him.
Roman turns the pages to look at the rest of the wedding album, feeling a strange sense of sadness. There's his father, standing next to Baird, and Roman briefly wonders if Logan was their best man. He's never asked. There's Frank and Karl too, and Lester in the group shots. There's even one of both of Roman's parents together, looking relatively happy.
"What are you doing?"
Roman jumps guiltily. Gerri is standing behind him, still in her pyjamas, looking at him suspiciously.
"I wasn't snooping," he says unconvincingly. "I was tidying."
"Uh huh." She takes the album off him. "You done?"
"Yeah." He gets up and follows her to the couch, where she sits flicking through the album.
"I was just curious," he says, sinking down so he's at her feet.
"If there's something you want to know about my past, you can just ask, Roman. We have to trust each other."
"Yeah, I know." He nods. "Sorry." He can't resist asking, "How come you keep that here?" She barely has any photos here, except a couple of her daughters.
"I don't," she says. "I was showing it to the girls, last time I saw them. I haven't had time to put it back with the others yet."
"Oh," he says, feeling foolish.
Gerri pats the space on the couch beside her, and Roman gets up to sit next to her. She's gone back to the first page to look at the full-length photo of her and Baird.
"I was quite a dish, wasn't I?" says Gerri, looking nostalgically at her younger self.
"Yeah," says Roman, staring at the present-day Gerri. "Especially now."
She gives him an oh you look and continues to turn the pages of the album.
