Chapter 1: New School
A husky sat in a spaceship. He pressed a few buttons.
(Damien) "This is spaceman Damien ready for liftoff! Let's go to the moon!"
A countdown began.
10...9...8...
The rocket began to shake.
7...6...5...4...
Fire blasted out from the boosters at the bottom of the rocket. Damien strapped himself in.
3...2...1...
The rocket blasted off the ground. It flew up into the sky towards the moon.
(Damien) "Here we go! Space, here I come!"
The rocket flew into the air and disappeared high into the sky.
...
(Quinn) "Hon! Wake up! It's almost time to head out to your new school!"
Damien the husky woke from a deep slumber. He yawned and hopped out of bed. He walked over to the mirror in his room and stared at himself.
(Damien) "My first day at a new school. Hopefully I won't have to leave this place too."
Damien and his mom had just moved to Brisbane. They had been all over Australia throughout Damien's 7 years of life. Damien's mom, Quinn, was a single mother. Damien never met his father. His father had left the day he was born. He wasn't prepared to care for a child of his own. Ever since, Quinn had moved from city to city trying to hold down a stable job to provide for her and Damien. Damien had been to 5 different schools over the years, and this would be his 6th. The worst part of his mobile life was having to leave the friends he had made over the years. Every time he started at a new school Damien would wake the same way. His first day at a new school he always hopped would be a permanent stay, but within months him and his mom would always end up moving. At his last school Damien saved himself the trouble of not leaving friends behind by not making any friends. And yet he always had hope each and every time that this time would be different.
Damien met his mom downstairs at their kitchen table. His mom had prepared a breakfast of bacon and eggs. Damien sat down at the table and began to eat his breakfast.
(Quinn) "You excited to make new friends at your new school?"
(Damien) "What's the point when we'll probably just move away in a few months to a new town, and I'll have to leave everyone behind."
Damien teared up thinking about all the friends he had left behind. His mom felt upset for him but had some exciting news.
(Quinn) "I know it's been tough making friends for you. I hate that we've had to constantly move myself. But I have some good news! The company I've started at has been impressed with my work. I've already been offered a better position within the company! I don't think we'll have to move this time around."
(Damien) "Really?!"
Damien's tail wagged. He wiped the tears from his eyes. For once he might actually make some friends he wouldn't have to leave within a few months. He quickly ate the rest of his breakfast. He was now excited to get to school. He got up from the table, put his dishes in the sink, and ran back upstairs to his room to grab some things. Quinn smiled, happy that her son was happy.
Damien grabbed his backpack. His backpack had a blue spaceship on the front. He slipped the backpack around his back, and quickly ran back downstairs. Quinn had finished washing the dishes from breakfast when he showed up. She put the clean dishes away, and then walked over to the fridge. She opened the fridge and grabbed a lunchbox she had made for Damien. The lunchbox had the same design as Damien's backpack.
(Quinn) "Ready to go?"
Damien nodded. His tail wagged with excitement. Quinn shut the fridge door. She grabbed her car keys from a shelf by the front door.
(Quinn) "Let's go!"
...
Quinn parked the car just outside the Glasshouse Primary School. Many other parents had also arrived to drop off their kids. Quinn hopped out of the car and walked to the back seat. She opened the door and helped Damien out of his seat.
(Quinn) "Here we are. I've heard great things about this school. You'll love it here, I'm sure of it."
Damien was already happy. He was mostly happy that him and his mom were done moving around from city to city.
(Quinn) "I have to stay a bit late at the office today. It'll be a bit till I can pick you up. I already called ahead, and the school said that'd be alright. Will you be alright?"
Damien nodded. He had to stay late some days at his old schools.
Damien and Quinn walked up the steps to the school. An Australian shepherd wearing a blue shawl waited at the entrance of the school to greet the kids and their parents.
(Calypso) "Why hello there! You must be the new student."
(Damien) "Hi teacher. My name is Damien."
(Calypso) "Welcome Damien. It's nice to meet you. My name is Calypso. I am excited to get to know you."
(Quinn) "Hello Calypso. I am Damien's mother, Quinn. Don't forget that I have to stay at the office a bit late today, so I'll be a bit to pick Damien up from school. I'm sorry for any inconvenience."
(Calypso) "It's no problem at all! I have another student whose father will be picking them up late today as well. You don't need to be sorry."
(Quinn) "Thank you so much!"
Quinn leaned down, and hugged Damien.
(Quinn) "I'll see you later. Tell me all about how your first day went."
(Damien) "I will. Bye mom!"
Quinn broke the hug. She walked back to her car. She waved goodbye to Damien, and Damien waved back. She got in her car and drove away.
(Calypso) "You'll have a lot of fun here, I promise. Why don't you tell me a bit about yourself?"
(Damien) "I really like space."
(Calypso) "I can see that. Nice backpack and lunchbox."
(Damien) "This is the 6th school I've been to in two years. Me and my mom have had to move around a lot. I don't really have any friends."
(Calypso) "Well luckily the first day of school is a great time to make new friends. Let's head inside so you can meet everyone!"
Damien followed Calypso inside the school.
