CHAPTER 66

Cody moved cautiously across the barren land to the south of the mine, his keen eye scanning every patch of ground for any clue that might lead to the whereabouts of his friend, Allien. The faded footprints he found indicated that someone had been there recently, and his heart raced at the possibility of being close to finding her.

Allien had been missing for many days, and time was making the search ever more urgent. As a member of the Mounties, Cody deeply understood the dangers that surrounded young girls who were kidnapped. He knew the horrific stories of abuse and violence that often accompanied these terrible crimes, and the mere thought of Allien being subjected to such horrors made his blood boil with indignation.

As he followed the sparse clues, memories of his own journey of learning about relationships and human nature flooded his mind. Cody vividly remembered how, before joining the Mounties, he was naïve about the complex dynamics between men and women. It was his friend and colleague, Robert, who guided him and clarified his doubts on the subject, opening his eyes to the brutal reality of the injustices taking place.

For Cody, it was incomprehensible how anyone could inflict pain and suffering on another person, especially a woman. His determination to find Allien and ensure her safety was fueled not only by his duty as a Mountie, but also by the deep empathy he felt for his friend and the horror he felt when he imagined what she might be facing at the hands of her captors.

Robert was on his way to find Cody, but the latter's delay in returning from his search near the coal mine made him increasingly uneasy. They had everything meticulously timed, and any delay could mean trouble or indicate something relevant about the leads they were following.

Robert's anxiety grew with every passing minute, and he felt like he was on the verge of madness. Never in his life had he experienced such intense and overwhelming fear. His mind wandered to painful memories from the past, like the time he thought his sister, still in his mother's womb, was dead. It was during the Christmas season, and he vividly recalled how he made a fervent wish on the Christmas tree, begging for her health. The unexpected help of Jack Thornton, who had temporarily returned from battle in the Northern Territories, together with his teacher, Elizabeth, to build a crib for his sister, was a ray of hope amid the darkness of his anguish.

That period was the only time when Robert's fear matched what he was feeling now. The uncertainty of Cody's fate, added to the responsibility of finding Allien and Jack, weighed on his shoulders like an unbearable burden. Each accelerated beat of his heart echoed like a deafening drum in his ears, an incessant reminder that time was passing and that his actions could determine the fate of his loved ones.

As he made his way towards the meeting place, Robert struggled to maintain his calm and composure in the face of the maelstrom of emotions that was consuming him. He knew he couldn't allow fear to paralyze him; he had a mission to accomplish and people who depended on him. With every firm step he took, he renewed his determination to find his friends and bring them back to the safety of their homes, whatever the cost.

- Alien, my love, please fight. I will find you, Robert said aloud, his words echoing in the silence of the night. His thoughts were restless, unable to detach themselves from the image of his beloved Allien. It was as if she was always present in his mind, a constant reminder of the despair that consumed him.

He felt as if he were in a race against time, each passing minute seeming like an agonizing eternity. The anguish of not knowing Allien's whereabouts was a gaping wound in his heart, and he was determined to do everything in his power to find her and bring her back to himself.

In a moment of intertwined despair and hope, Robert said a silent prayer to God, begging for strength and guidance in his search.

"O God, my heavenly Father, whose presence is everywhere and whose love is infinite, I turn to you in humility and reverence. I ask you, with all my heart, to look with kindness on little Jack, a pure and innocent soul, just beginning his journey in this world. Protect him from the burning cold, the clenching hunger and any evil that may plague his fragile existence. God, I also pray for my beloved Allien, whose smile brightens even the darkest days. She is a child loved by all, a light in the midst of darkness. You know, O God, the pain that burns in the heart of Mountie Nathan, who cannot conceive of life without his daughter. You have also seen the despair of Professor Elizabeth, whose heart has known so many tears. I ask you, God, to protect and guard your children, to keep them from harm and to keep them safe under your protective wings. But, God, allow me to be even bolder in my supplication. I cry out for your mercy and grace, begging you to save my Allien. She is the essence of my existence, the sparkle in my eyes, the love that warms my soul. Without her, I would be like a tree without roots, destined to wander aimlessly through the world. Help me, O God, to find her, guide my steps towards her safety, and may the light of your grace illuminate the path ahead of us. In your name, my God, I pray, trusting in your goodness and mercy. Amen."

He cried out for divine help, placing his faith in the hands of fate as he searched for a light at the end of the tunnel of uncertainty.

With a heavy heart, but a burning determination in his soul, Robert continued his lonely journey in the relentless darkness of the night, guided by faith and love that drove him to find Allien and bring her back to his arms, where she belonged.

Tears rolled down Robert's cheeks, despair at the thought of what these bandits could do.

The biting cold of the night enveloped everything around them, penetrating to the bone and freezing every breath. Robert's horse, a faithful companion in his agonizing search, snorted, the steam from his breath quickly dissipating into the icy air. Despite the animal's obvious suffering, Robert knew he couldn't stop the search.

As he made his way through the desolate landscape, Robert's thoughts were fixed on the two missing boys. He prayed fervently that they would be all right, especially little Jack, whose delicate body would surely suffer from the impact of the bitter cold. The thought of Jack shivering and feeling helpless broke Robert's heart, further fueling his determination to find them.

Despite the dark night and the penetrating cold, Robert continued his journey, every beat of his heart echoing with the hope that the boys were safe somewhere. He knew he couldn't allow despair to overwhelm him; there was a mission to accomplish, and he was determined to find them, whatever the cost.

When he reached the entrance to the mine, Robert saw Cody's horse, solitary and restless, as if it were waiting for its master. Next to it, a small fire was emitting a weak light, casting dancing shadows on the rocky walls. Robert didn't hesitate: he quickly dismounted and moved towards the mine entrance.

With determination, he grabbed a torch and lit it, the crackling flame illuminating his path as he entered the dark, labyrinthine corridors of the mine. Each step was a constant reminder of the urgency of the situation and the need to find Cody and, hopefully, the two missing boys.

The sound of their footsteps echoed through the silent galleries, interrupted only by the occasional trickle of water echoing off the stone walls. The damp air, impregnated with the smell of earth and coal, enveloped Robert as he advanced deeper into the darkness, his heart beating with a mixture of anxiety and determination.

The harsh, dissonant sound of creaking wood echoed through the mine's narrow corridors, filling the air with a dark, oppressive feeling. Each ominous crack seemed to be an omen, as if the very walls of that place, witnesses to past tragedies and lost lives, were about to collapse on Robert's head at any moment.

The pitch darkness that enveloped every corner of the mine was almost palpable, dense and impregnated with the fine dust that rose with every step. It was as if the dark past of the place hung in the air, weighing on Robert's shoulders like a cloak of despair and desolation.

The walls of the mine seemed to whisper dark secrets, ghostly murmurs that echoed in the deep recesses of Robert's heart. He could feel the agonizing presence of the miners who had lost their lives in those dark tunnels, their voices echoing like a ghostly echo across the centuries.

Every step forward was a battle against the darkness, a struggle to maintain courage in the face of the looming threat of collapse and imminent danger. But Robert refused to give in to the fear that threatened to consume him. Torch in hand, he pushed on with determination, a lone light amid the suffocating darkness of the mine, guided only by the hope of finding his friends and bringing them back to the safety of the outside world.

He knew that every second counted and that the boys' lives were at stake. Torch in hand, Robert advanced cautiously, his mind alert for any sign that might lead him to his missing friends. Hope was a dim and distant light, but Robert clung to it with all his might, determined to bring his friends back to the safety of daylight.

Robert advanced cautiously through the mine's winding corridors, each step echoing like a distant echo in the oppressive darkness that surrounded him. Every sound seemed amplified, filling his ears with a cacophony of disconcerting noises that made his heart race with a mixture of fear and anticipation.

As he entered one of the forks, a faint light caught his eye at the end of the corridor. His heart raced with anticipation of what he might find there. With silent steps and restrained breathing, he slowly approached, his mind spinning with astonishing possibilities.

Then, in the glare of the torchlight, he saw Cody crouching in front of him, his figure obscured by the dancing shadows. Robert's heart skipped a beat when he realized that his friend had found something. "What could it be? An ancient artifact? A lost map? Or something more sinister, something that could change the course of their lives forever?"

The tension in the air was palpable, a static electricity that enveloped the two men as they waited breathlessly to find out what Cody had discovered in that dark mine full of secrets. The suspense was almost unbearable, as if they were standing on the edge of an unknown abyss, ready to plunge into a world of mysteries and unimaginable dangers.
