Chapter 15
Kara, Nia, and J'onn landed on the corner of the intersection they'd seen on the computer screen. Traffic buzzed around them and they noticed how the vehicles tried to get around Marie, who was standing in the middle of the intersection, waving her arms, shouting something that neither one of the heroes could understand. Kara quickly scanned her body.
"We've seen this before. She's got a bomb strapped to her chest," the blonde told J'onn.
"I can try to phase her out of it but we have to catch her first. Somehow, I don't think she'll go willingly," he pointed out. Kara heaved a sigh, knowing he was right. She scooped up Nia and flew into the intersection. She lowered herself down near Marie. She could hear the squealing of tires as the vehicles saw her and tried to come to a stop. Nia was protecting her backside, using her energy to stop any vehicles that might not be paying attention.
"Marie! It's Supergirl and Dreamer!" Kara hoped that her friend would stop shouting. That did not work. If anything, Marie started shouting louder in a language that Kara did not understand. That's when Kara noticed the dead man switch in the engineer's hand.
"J'onn, she's got a dead man switch! That's different!" She warned him over the comms. The Martian had flagged down an NCPD patrol officer, who radioed for back up. They needed to clear the intersection of as many civilians as they could.
"Can I use my energy to keep the button pressed down and then you can tackle her?" Nia offered over her shoulder.
"Might be the only way we can do it. I can't calm her down and she's just getting more agitated. She takes her thumb off that button…" Kara didn't want to think it.
"Ok, I'm going to turn around real slow and then I'm going to aim for her hand," Nia warned her friend.
"You got it," Kara told her. Marie was waving the button around. The blonde wondered why she hadn't taken her finger off the button. Maybe, just maybe, that the real Marie was still in there, fighting back. Kara refused to believe it was because there was an ulterior motive, mostly for her own sanity at the moment. She watched as Nia's energy engulfed Marie's hand. In an instant, Kara tackled her.
Marie was losing her mind, actually trying to remove her thumb. Luckily, Nia's energy would not let her. If Marie was in there, she wasn't, at that moment. J'onn landed next to them and placed his fingers on Marie's forehead. Next thing they knew, she was unconscious.
"Bomb Squad is on their way. They will take this thing off of her," J'onn told them.
"Good but should we be in the middle of the intersection?" Nia asked.
"They would rather block traffic than be too close to the buildings," the Martian said it without thinking.
"Right. So, does anyone have a clue to the language she was speaking? I know that she's a bit more travelled than most but I didn't think she spoke multiple languages," Kara was concerned that maybe the hypnotized woman was somehow regressing or perhaps had knowledge implanted into her head.
"We'll have to see if she speaks it when she wakes up. It could be a clue to what the group was trying to achieve with this," J'onn figured.
"Let's hope we can figure it out soon. My arm is getting tired," Nia told them.
"Bomb Squad is only a few blocks out," Kara reassured her.
"Good. Now that we have Marie. Where is Agent Smith?" Nia asked.
"That is a worry. They must have gotten what they needed out of Marie but I'm not sure what they needed from Agent Smith," Kara was concerned that this was far from over.
