After Owens was sent away, Eleven was left on her own, suddenly frightened for what was going to happen to her now, and what she was going to have to do. She didn't want to do this. She didn't want to really show so many people about her past, what she had gone through. But she needed to. Everything she had done, her whole life had led to this very moment; those years being isolated away in the Lab, haunted by the dim memories of Kali and her mother, and she hadn't even known that woman who'd burst into the upper Rainbow Room had been her mother, losing her memories after fighting Creel until she ripped open that hole and threw him into it, those new experiments with Papa, her escape from the lab after unleashing the Demogorgon…all the way until she had found herself in Lenora, powerless and at the mercy of Angela and her bullying.
Eleven actually found it funny, she had been so scared of Angela, but now she knew it was so pathetic of her to be scared of her compared to the evil that was invading the world right now, without any ends in sight. Once again, she wondered if Angela had been watching what was happening in Hawkins. She hoped so. She honestly hoped that Angela was sick when she saw the hell Eleven had gone through. She was looking forward to showing her memories to Angela and her stupid friends.
Still, she couldn't deny Owens didn't have a good point; while she was a little bit dubious about showing anyone in the military what she could do, what she had seen and done and what she was going through throughout the course of her life, which made her ask herself if doing so wouldn't lead to them knowing how to kill her, she was left asking if she should even show soldiers her memories.
But showing the people who lived in Hawkins and were now trapped here by Vecna would do wonders in showing them what was going on, the truth and not the belief there was some weird Satanist gang in the town. And what about the people who had suffered without knowing it because of the Upside Down? They deserved answers; Eleven was more than aware of the fact Nancy, Joyce, and Jonathan in particular had been so frustrated by the liars they'd had to tell since Will's disappearance they had taped Owens in a conversation, and they had sent them off to publishers; what good that did, Eleven didn't know, she hadn't heard.
Eleven took a deep breath; this was going to be difficult, especially if she focused on the distant minds of people like Angela and her friends, and everyone in her school at Lenora. There was no way she wasn't going to resist showing Angela just who and what she had messed with. There was also no doubt in her head that Angela had witnessed everything going on in Hawkins on the television and national news. At the same time, she was going to be left exhausted by looking for Kali, and everyone else out there who was like her. While she was more than aware everyone in Hawkins lab was dead, and she and Kali were all that were left, she knew there were other labs across the world. She had to find them. She had to save them.
Eleven braced herself, thankful that she was so close to the Upside Down now which would amplify her abilities and would help her with her tasks. Concentrating on Kali, Eleven was surprised at the image of Kali sitting down in the battered old van she and her gang used to track down the Bad Men, the people who'd hurt her, Axel, Funshine, and Dottie. She smiled as she saw they were there with her. She smiled at her sister for a moment, taking in the big punk hair, black-rimmed eyes, and beautiful face…but then her smile faded when she saw Kali's eyes were red-rimmed. She'd been crying. But why? She was also looking tense, and tired, but she was driving in her usual cool manner.
"How much further to Hawkins have we got to go now?" Axel asked.
Eleven gaped. Hawkins? They were coming to Hawkins?
"Another few hours," Dottie replied.
"There's one problem, Kali; when we get to Hawkins, how are we going to find Jane?"
Eleven sighed with relief and longing for her sister. Of course, Kali was coming to Hawkins because of her. But the only problem with that was Eleven, as much as she longed to be with Kali again, who could help her get out of the town before that military bastard tried to kill her again, she didn't have a clue where she was currently. Eleven was currently in the void, unconscious, and she hadn't even had time to find out where in Hawkins she was.
Kali sagged. "I haven't a clue," she admitted, clearly hating it. "I'm hoping when we get to Hawkins, she'd have recovered enough for us to track her down."
"Yeah, why did she collapse anyway?" Dottie asked curiously.
"Jane's powers take it out of her, just like mine do, but from what I remember the more you use your powers, the longer you have to rest. It stops as you get older," Kali explained.
"God, what kind of crap did you guys go through when you were kids?" Axel asked.
"Shut up, Axel," Funshine growled, before he turned to Kali, "Have you ever heard of Creel before, Kali?"
Kali frowned, "No," she said. "But he knows Jane, but when I heard him speak, I thought I recognised it from somewhere," she added, shaking her head.
Eleven decided this was no better time than anything. "Kali, stop the van - I'm going to project memories of my past into the minds of everyone."
Kali jerked. "Jane?!"
"KALI, WATCH IT!" Axel shouted before grabbing the steering wheel, just before something happened. Kali and Axel managed to get enough control over the van, and steered it together into the side of the road before bringing it to a stop.
"What the fuck is going on?" Funshine demanded.
"Do you remember when I told you we could speak to each other over large distances? Well, I've just heard Jane, my sister, in my head," Kali said excitedly.
"Kali," Eleven said, she didn't have time for them to ask more questions, "I'm going to project some of my memories into the minds of everyone in Hawkins, the place in California where I lived, and a few other people; I want to share them with you, and the gang, but to do that you need to be still and not moving. I don't want you to have an accident; I don't know where I am in Hawkins but with some luck…you might see one of the people I'm with right now."
"Jane, where were you? That thing you were fighting….what happened?" Kali asked faintly; Eleven blinked in surprise but love as she saw her big sister was close to tears, ignoring the looks she was getting from the others. It was one thing to hear about powers, it was another to see it happening in front of you. Kali and Eleven both knew that feeling.
"I lost my powers for a year."
"You…what?" Kali gaped.
"It's a long story, Kali. A monster bit me, and it somehow affected me, like it had 'shocked' my brain, and I couldn't use them anymore. I couldn't go into the void, move anything, nothing. I've been in Lenora."
"What about that girl you bashed with that roller skate, what was the story there?"
Eleven looked down and sighed. Now she had some time to think, after speaking to her aunt, she realised she would bash Angela again.
"She was a bully, Kali. She made my life at school a living hell. I finally lashed out, one day, after she humiliated me badly and I was left with her laughter ringing in my mind."
"Where does she live, Jane?"
"NO, you are not killing her. Besides, what I plan to do now will make her regret it."
"Why, what do you plan to do?"
Eleven blew out a breath. "I'm near the Upside Down. I'm going to use it to reach out, to the people at Hawkins, you and your gang, my friends, and a few others. I'm going to show what I've gone through. And I'm also going to reach out to others like us; I know they exist, Kali. I need to reach out. Make them want to be free, they'll need to be, now Brenner is dead."
"Brenner?" Kali looked at her incredulously. "Where does he come into this? I thought he was dead."
"He is now. I thought he'd died a few years ago but he survived. He….made me revisit memories I'd forgotten, memories of how I'd known Creel. But he's dead now, he was killed by the army."
"Creel? Who is he anyway?"
"He's…one of us, Kali." Eleven rolled up her sleeve and showed off her 011 tattoo. "He was One."
"Wha-? You mean he was one of us? But how? What happened?"
"It's best if I show you. Just don't move from where you are, and let the memories come; the story is too complicated to put into words, and I don't know if some of it is still missing from my memories, it's best to show it," Eleven said.
Kali was biting her lip thoughtfully. "You'd forgotten?" She said, looking at her thoughtfully. "I had thought it strange you didn't remember me, from our time in the lab. I was hoping to spend more time with you and find out what you did remember. But I did think you'd forgotten me."
"What? And you didn't say anything?" Eleven gazed at her in surprise.
"I didn't know what happened to you, Jane. I didn't know what would happen if I said the wrong thing; as I said, I was going to speak to you, and see what you did remember, and try to fill in the gaps. I wasn't purposefully keeping things from you; besides, we both know the dangers of trauma to the brain," Kali said.
Eleven closed her eyes. "Yeah, you're right. I have thought about you so much, over this last year," she sighed and looked down. She didn't know how to say this, but she didn't need to.
"You're not staying with them, are you?" Kali said, gazing pointedly at her.
Eleven bit her lip and lifted her gaze, eyes sparkling. "No," she croaked, "I can't. You know I can't. Even if I could, I wouldn't put them in danger. I spent a year putting on a facade, being happy I didn't have my powers, but….I missed them, I missed them so much. I no longer cared about how much pain I'd gone through because of them. I wanted them back, so when I had the chance to get them back, I jumped for it. But I found out I couldn't live a normal life, and I tried, I tried so hard to tell myself I could live a normal life, but it didn't work. I realised I didn't belong anywhere."
"So, what will you do now?" Kali asked, trying to keep her excitement masked. The last thing she wanted was to make her sister react badly.
"I've got no choice, Kali; people like Brenner will be after me, and an army officer is chasing after me. I'm going to have to leave them. I won't be able to write letters to them, since they could be intercepted, and read, so I'd have to make use of the void," Eleven replied.
"I know about that soldier, Jane; I think we should kill him," Kali said seriously.
Eleven balked at the thought of killing anybody, but she knew full well that sometimes you had to kill, just to survive. She hadn't had qualms about killing Vecna, not during that battle in the Lab after he'd killed everyone, or nearly everyone else there, besides herself, Papa, and a few others, but there were some people she was unwilling to kill. She knew if she had to, she would kill this soldier; if she had his details, she would easily be able to kill him in the void.
But while she did baulk about the thought of killing him, that it would make things worse, and more soldiers would try to kill her in retaliation, deep down she knew Kali had a point.
"Do you have a photo of him? I don't want to see him anytime soon. If I had a photo of him, from a newspaper article after he's been in a conference, then I can kill him here without him being near me."
"How did you know about the press conference?" Kali asked in surprise.
"Dr Owens, someone from the lab who's kinda an ally told me after I brought him here; I had to ask him something important. Creel had killed our brothers and sisters from the Lab, and he killed a few people here, in Hawkins, to open a gate for him to escape the Upside Down, one of them is a really good friend, a sister to me like you are. He took their minds in his mind; I wanted to see if Brenner had ordered their bodies destroyed, or kept on ice," Eleven explained.
Kali was pleased at the thought of having another sister, and she figured out what Eleven was saying. "You want to see if you could reunite their minds and bodies together."
"Yes. He said they were gone."
"Do you think he was lying?" Kali knew the men at the lab, they were liars and torturers.
Eleven had to admit the same thought had crossed her mind; Owens might have been more trustworthy and not as cruel as Brenner, but he was a liar, he had kept the news that Brenner was still alive from her, and she hadn't known until the last minute. But would he be stupid enough to lie now?
"I don't know, but if I did free them, then at least they'd be freed," Eleven said sadly. "They didn't deserve that."
"No, they didn't," Kali said. "Okay," she said at last, "I don't know what you plan to do, but we'll be waiting."
"Thanks, sis," Eleven smiled, and she embraced Kali warmly, who hugged her back. "I've missed you. I'll see you soon; I don't know when I'll be waking up, but I hope I'll be awake soon. Just keep yourself safe. Don't let anyone see you guys."
"We won't," Kali said in her hair before she kissed Eleven on the cheek. "I love you, sis."
"I love you too," Eleven said, before she cut the connection, and began concentrating.
