Note: Hey everyone! So another story being posted. My first attempt at ghosts so I hope this works. The plot I have is hopefully going to be interesting.
Uchiha Castle
Naruto Uzumaki just got home after spending time at a 'haunted' house. Once again it was bullshit. Naruto only went after ones that sound intense and yet all of them turn out to be fake every time. He still hoped one will be real because that would mean he may get to see his late parents again.
He placed his travel bag on the floor and sat heavily on the couch, filled with disappointment. His phone suddenly went off with a familiar ringtone that he didn't care to hear right then. He sighed. "He has horrible timing." But at the same time, he knew if he ignored then the old pervert would just keep calling. He answered. "Hey Jiraiya."
"Hey kid. How ya doin?" Jiraiya was his manager of sorts and found the locations. He was also the reason Naruto was able to live off this. The old man was his godfather and a writer. He wrote porno as well as mystery. And his inspiration for the mysteries came from Naruto's haunted house hunting. He paid Naruto with each visit, even if the information wasn't much.
Naruto groaned and rubbed a hand over his face. "Just got back. Place was a bust just like I said." He looked down at his feet. "I'll email you the stuff I found out. It's not much but I'm sure you can spin it into something useful…I think…"
"Sorry about the bust, and don't worry about the amount of information. I'm the one that insisted on it. But look, I think I finally found the one."
That made Naruto frown. "Come on old man. I just got back. I really am not in the mood."
"At least listen to it. Then you can decide whatever you want."
After a moment's pause he said, "Fine. What is it?"
Jiraiya sounded pleased. "It's the Uchiha Castle in Konoha, Japan. It's haunted by two brothers that were killed there. The Uchiha royal family was all murdered one night but no one knows the details of it. There are rumors but nothing of facts. The brothers were supposedly the two youngest members, Princes."
That didn't fully sound like enough to get him there. "I don't know. I just got back from one that failed fantastically."
"I know kid. But look. This one truly seems legit. There have been plenty of sightings and strange things happening."
Naruto was again quiet for a bit as he thought about it. "…Tell me about the castle." He had to be honest he was a bit interested. He's never done a castle before. Or royal family things. Or even murders, (well, real murders and not just thoughts of a murder).
"It has had electricity installed but reports say it isn't always reliable."
"Plumbing?" He'd stayed in places that had none but he didn't like doing it.
"From what I've gathered it works fine."
The blond hummed softly. "What about places to sleep?"
"The bedrooms are kept clean in respect to the late family."
He sounded a bit amazed. "Even this long after it happened?" That was kind of a strange decision.
Jiraiya chuckled. "Their clan during that time believed heavily in spirits. And in case a spirit happened to stay behind they wanted to make sure its room remained in order. With so many reports it would be an insult to just stop doing it."
"Wow. That's really respectful. I guess I've never had a case quite like this before. And I have always wanted to visit Japan." Ever since his mother told him stories about her time there. Especially of the handsome man that is the exact copy of Naruto, just older. Kushina only had one picture of her and Minato together. They were holding Naruto in the hospital, right after he was born.
Minato passed away one week after. Kushina refused to tell Naruto how he died. So the blond just left it alone. He really didn't want to upset his mother. And now at the age of 27 he is alone. Kushina having died two years earlier because of health issues that she constantly tried to deny.
"The room that is the most cared for is the elder brother's bedroom. The brothers were supposedly found dead in the bed. Whether they were awake for it has never been found out."
Naruto quickly focused back on the information. "…Well if I go I guess it'd be best to stay there. What are the brothers' names?" This was sounding even more interesting.
Jiraiya seemed happier at this. "Itachi is the elder and Sasuke is the younger."
"Have they been seen?" He was a bit excited at the thought.
"Not fully but reports have seen them in mirrors."
"Wouldn't they cover those up?" He then realized that it was a full murder of the entire family. "Though…I suppose if a spirit gets caught in a mirror or whatever it would have already happened."
"So should I set it up for ya kid?"
Naruto sighed. "Yeah. Go ahead. I'll get some clean clothes and stuff together." He hung up and started getting ready.
Before Naruto left, he looked up and printed out as much as he could about the Uchihas. There were some pictures of the castle and a painting of what Naruto assumed to be the main family. The people mentioned were King Fugaku, Queen Mikoto, High Prince Itachi, and Prince Sasuke. "High prince must mean eldest then." He had to admit that the family was very well gifted in the looks department. He found some of the reports of ghosts and did a cursory glance just to get an idea. He didn't like reading them beforehand as that could color his opinion.
What he found on the assassination was lacking compared to the rest. There was the date, the information that the brothers were killed in their bed, and that no one ever found who did it. Though it was rumored that a rival kingdom had sent their best to destroy and weaken the kingdom. Which it almost did. Apparently, the throne was handed over to a successor or something. He didn't look too much into that as he didn't know if it would be relevant.
-o-
Naruto was a bit confused at first when he found out that people really are allowed to stay at the castle. Apparently Konoha realized that they can respect the dead while at the same time gaining economy from it. Naruto wasn't too sure how he felt about that but nothing he can do. After arriving at the castle he followed some signs, (someone actually placed signs), to where Itachi's bedroom was. He managed to undress to his boxers and just flop onto the bed. He was still so exhausted from the previous one. Add to that the jetlag. Without further thought, he fell asleep.
The next morning Naruto woke up and went to the basin filled with water. Interesting but whatever. Guess it was part of the upkeep. He splashed some water on his face before looking up into the mirror. He froze for a second as his eyes met the ones of a raven-haired man standing behind him. He quickly turned but saw nothing. When he looked back into the mirror he saw only himself. "Damn. I really do need some sleep. Already seeing stuff." He blamed Jiraiya for getting him so worked up about this.
He turned to where he tossed his shirt the night before, only to see it neatly folded with his pants and his house slippers under the chair. "…okay then…" He must have been really tired if he didn't even remember making his clothes neat before he slept.
For food he brought a bunch of travel cups of ramen and a kettle. Since there is plumping and a fireplace, he could easily have ramen. It was his favorite food anyway. After eating he spent the day exploring the castle. It was surprisingly not that big. The largest room seemed to be the throne room.
The thrones were kept clean and the pillows on them looked almost brand new. Though Naruto did notice that the princes' thrones looked just a tad bit worn, with their pillows a bit more compressed as if someone very light sat on it. He frowned at the thought of people sitting on a throne like that. It was extremely disrespectful. On instinct he fluffed up both the pillows and used a handkerchief to shine it up a bit. When satisfied he moved on.
There was a kitchen, where he found a proper place to boil the water for his ramen and a better place than the bathroom to get water. "Probably should have looked for this first. Oh well. Lesson learned." He felt a slight shiver and rubbed his arms. "Must be a draft. Makes sense since the place is old."
The dining area was a bit big but considering the size of the Uchiha family it would need to be. The tables with more fresh pillows were still there. Naruto paused before he slowly knelt on one. "Perhaps I should eat in here. Eating in a bedroom is disrespectful in Japan...right?" He actually didn't know if it was true but it felt disrespectful to him. "Once again. Lesson learned." He looked behind him when he thought he heard a chuckle. "…okay then." Was probably creaking wood. Though creaking wood sounding like a chuckle was a first. He stood up and fixed the pillow before going on.
He should bring the ramen cups to the kitchen. Would make sense. Probably should bring the chopsticks he brought and the kettle too. Then he'll continue on.
As he explored small things kept happening. So by the end of the day, he was a bit frazzled and not sure what to think about this stuff. "It's definitely more activity than in the other places. But if I can rationalize them then they aren't real. Right?" He blinked and looked around when he thought he heard a chuckle. "…right. Whatever." When he reached for his bag with his nightclothes, he saw the clothes folded neatly on the chair. His eyes moved to the basin. Even though he didn't refill it there was fresh water and a towel next to it.
"If there are ghosts then they must be rather into being neat and hospitable." But that's just too weird. What ghosts did that? He looked around. Then again, maybe this was normal. After all, what did anyone really know about ghosts?
"Though if there is activity during the day, there should be some at night too." So a change of plans happened. Instead of sleeping he picked up his flashlight, notepad, and pen, and headed out. He didn't believe in all that fancy equipment. None of it ever worked so obviously if there are ghosts, then those things can't actually pick them up. He wrote down all the events that have been happening, as well as his rationalizations. He'll make sure to write down any new events from now on. He's here to take stuff seriously and not to be in denial.
He nodded and went out of the room. He decided to go outside to see the gardens. It was a warm night with a beautiful full moon and lots of stars. Sakura trees in bloom and a beautiful koi pond with a small bridge going to a hill with a bench and biggest Sakura tree. When he looked into the pond, he saw rather large koi. Very beautiful too. "People feed them." He smiled. "That's very sweet of them." He went to the hill and sat on the bench. He was rather amazed that it's kept so neat. "Guess they have a gardener or something who helps out. That's nice." It makes sense if the rooms are kept in order.
His head moved to the side quickly. He thought he saw someone there… He quickly pulled out his notepad and wrote it down, checking the time to log it as well.
During the night more things were happening. Only small incidents but still activity. The next day continued to hold surprises. He would keep misplacing things through the day and finding them in weird locations. One time when he was look at a painting of the brothers, he could swear the one called Sasuke actually looked at him and smirked. Until Naruto blinked and looked again.
But what convinced him was that on his way back to the bedroom he heard voices. They were speaking Japanese and had an extreme elegance to the words. He quickly opened the doors to see…nothing. Absolutely nothing. He knew he wasn't crazy which means only one thing.
Naruto's eyes widened. "It's real." A mix of shock and excitement shot through him once all the denial was gone.
A pale skinned raven appeared next to the window. He shimmered and some parts were almost see-through. "Took you long enough, dobe." His accent was elegant and formal even with the insult.
Another raven appeared in one of the sitting chairs. He had long hair pulled back and draped over one shoulder. He seemed elegant with long legs. He had a few stress lines but otherwise beautiful. "Be polite Sasuke-kun."
"Tch."
Both of them were dressed in royal kimonos. They were obviously the best made and spoke highly of their status. They were also the two that had been talking before he came in. Those voices were unmistakable.
Naruto blinked at them in absolute shock. They were the same two in the paintings he'd seen throughout the castle. "You…you're Sasuke and Itachi Uchiha…and you're dead…but you're here."
Sasuke rolled his eyes. "So it seems." He was obviously trying not to insult him anymore.
Naruto frowned and decided to throw his attitude back. "Well why didn't you just appear if you can do it anyway?" He realizes that it's been Sasuke who's been doing the most mirror and painting appearances. Naruto is guessing he just liked to be a creeper.
Sasuke raised an elegant brow. "Itachi-niisan and I had a bet going on for how long it would take you to accept it." He smirked. "I was positive it would take you longer than this." He didn't say why, though it wasn't hard to figure out.
Itachi chuckled. "It's not like we weren't giving you good hints right away."
The blond huffed. "Are all ghosts assholes?"
Itachi shrugged. "Don't know. We've never met any others. It's just us here."
"So I was a way to pass time?" Naruto frowned at that thought.
Both of them replied. "Yes."
The frown deepened. "Am I still that?"
Itachi locked eyes with him. It was so weird to be locking eyes with a ghost, but he was doing it. "Depends if you're going to stay."
Naruto shrugged. "Well…now that I have contact with you, I'm going to stay. The purpose of me being here is to prove whether or not there are ghosts here."
Now it was Sasuke's turn to frown. "And who will you tell?"
Naruto tilted his head, a bit confused. "Why? Do you want it a secret? I mean, people already think it's haunted here."
Itachi nodded. "True but if it was proven without a doubt then we would have constant tourists in our family home. So, if you would please remain silent."
Naruto did a slow nod. "So why did you show yourselves to me then?"
Itachi suddenly looked very weary. "We are alone here. Have been since we woke up dead."
Sasuke sighed. "We just couldn't remain hidden this time. And…you seem trustworthy."
Naruto thought about it and soon nodded. "I won't tell then. And I'll still stick around for a bit. I'm curious now about what happened." He suddenly realized how insensitive that might sound. "Sorry. Don't mean to get personal or something."
Itachi chuckled. "Makes sense that you are curious."
"So what is your orientation?" said Sasuke with a straight face.
Naruto eyes widened and he blushed. "My what?!" Was this ghost literally asking if he was gay?
Sasuke raised a brow, confusion in his eyes at the response. "Your national orientation. Where do you come from?"
With a slight chuckle Naruto rubbed the back of his head. "Oh. Right." He remembered that they come from a different time with different terms. "I'm American but I'm also half Japanese. My father passed away right after I was born and mom died two years ago. That's why my last name is Uzumaki. First name is Naruto by the way." He blinked. Whoa…why did he say that?
Itachi's eyes softened. "Well then. Welcome back to Japan, Uzumaki Naruto."
Naruto nodded and sat on the bed. He went through his bag and pulled out his notebook. "So, there isn't a lot of information on what happened. Do you two know?" Another blush. "Sorry again if that's rude."
Itachi merely waved it off though. "We made peace with our death long ago."
Sasuke nodded. "We don't remember much. I had crawled into aniki's bed to sleep. Then I woke up to loud noises in the hall. The door opened but it was too dark to see who came in. I saw a flash of a katana…and then nothing…"
Itachi's eyes were sad. "I woke up shortly after to see otouto dead with his throat slashed." He sighed. "Then they killed me."
Sasuke shrugged. "And that's all we know."
Naruto paused after writing. "So you were awake for it…" His voice was soft and filled with sadness.
Itachi nodded. "Yes. Luckily I died last." His eyes went to Sasuke. "I would never want my otouto to see me like that."
Sasuke looked to him with a soft smile before turning back to Naruto. "So there you go."
The blond nodded. "When did you appear as ghosts?"
Itachi hummed in thought. "I believe it was three years after our death that we woke up in our bed."
The younger nodded. "Sounds about right. And before you ask, no we don't know why it took so long. Or why it's only us."
Itachi sighed and stood up. "We've tried to figure out what brought us here as it might send us back to our eternal peace. But we've come up with nothing as we cannot leave our home."
Sasuke made a face. "And everyone that comes here is too stupid to be able to help us."
"Otouto. Be nice."
Naruto looked up from his writing pad. "Do you think…maybe I can help you? I can do further research or something. Can't guarantee it'll result in anything but I'm willing to give it a try."
Sasuke looked a bit shocked at the offer of help. "You'd really do this? Help us go back?"
Naruto nodded, determined. "Definitely. While it's cool I get to talk to ghosts, no one deserves to be trapped in limbo. Which is kinda what you are now. You know. The spot between life and death?" He started rethinking his desire to see his parents. He realized that he didn't want them in limbo either.
Itachi chuckled. "Yes, we know it. And I agree, that is probably where we are." Both of them suddenly started to shimmer softly.
The blonde's eyes widened. "What's going on?"
Sasuke's voice sounded a bit warped. Kind of creepy actually. "We can't stay in full form for too long."
Naruto nodded. "But I'll still see you in the mirrors and stuff, right? And be able to talk to you?"
Itachi nodded. "Of course. We won't be able to vocally answer, but we can hear and see you." He bowed with Sasuke. "Farewell, Uzumaki Naruto." Both of them vanished.
Naruto sat there for a bit as he tried to take in everything he just experienced. He wanted to call Jiraiya and tell him but he promised. And Naruto Uzumaki ALWAYS keeps his promise. He sighed and got up. He went to get his clothes and frowned when he realized he hasn't bathed while here. He had been really into figuring out the whole ghost thing. Luckily, he remembered where the bathing room was. It was a bit big but when he had tested it earlier it worked. He took a towel with him that he had packed and headed there.
Once he closed the door he stripped down and started the water. As he washed himself, he considered what he could do to help the brothers out. Once done he turned the water off and got out, wrapping the towel around his waist. He went to the mirror and wiped the off fog only to see Sasuke smirking. Startled a bit, he jerked back before scowling. "Perverted bastard. Did you seriously just watch me bathe?"
Sasuke shrugged but his eyes gleamed with amusement and his smirk grew. Then he faded away.
Naruto grumbled about perverted ghosts as he dried off and got dressed. He decided to look through the information some more. He paused on something. "Guys. I don't know if you can hear me but I might have found something." The sound of a creaking chair came through the room, as if someone sitting. "So you said you woke up three years later. Well apparently, there had been one member of your family still alive. Uchiha Madara. He took over from your father but died shortly after naming a successor." He glanced to the sitting area where he assumed they were. "He died three years after the murders."
