Jade stood in front of her parents' house, her heart pounding in her chest. Tori stood beside her, her hand intertwined with Jade's, offering silent support.
"You ready?" Tori asked, squeezing Jade's hand gently.
Jade nodded, taking a deep breath to steady herself. "I think so."
Tori placed her hand on Jade's shoulder, "Don't you worry baby. I'll be with you the whole way."
They walked up to the front door and rang the bell. Jade's mother, Mrs. West, opened the door, a smile on her face that faltered when she saw Tori standing beside Jade.
"Jade, Tori, glad you could make it." Mrs. West said.
Jade took a deep breath, summoning all her courage. "Hey Mom. How's your day?"
Her father, Mr. West, appeared behind her mother, his expression unreadable. "Jade, Tori, nice to see you both."
Jade took a step forward, her voice steady. "You too Dad."
Mrs. West chimed back in, "Well come on inside, both of you."
Mrs. West had agree to prepare dinner for Jade and Tori's visit. They stepped inside and took their seats at the dinner table. Tori, as part of her Latina heritage, helped Mrs. West set the table, then took her seat next to Jade. As they're eating, Jade chirps, "Mom, Dad, I have to tell you something."
Mr. West asks, "Ok, what is it?"
Jade continues, "Tori and I..."
Tori grabs Jade's hand and holds it, giving her a warm smile for comfort. Jade then finishes her sentence, "...Want to know if we can stay the night!"
Tori's face drops in shock and disappointment that Jade failed to confess.
Mrs. West responds, "Well...sure, of course you can. You can sleep in your old bedroom, but you'll need to make arrangements for Tori."
Tori says, "Thank you Mrs. West, but that's not she wanted to say."
Mrs. West is confused, "What is it then?"
Tori takes a breath, "Jade and I are romantically involved. She's my girlfriend and I am hers."
There was a moment of stunned silence, the words hanging in the air between them. Mrs. West was the first to speak, her voice filled with disbelief. "You're... together? But how? When did this happen?"
Tori spoke up, her voice calm and unwavering. "It's been a while, Mrs. West. We wanted to tell you sooner, but we were afraid of how you would react."
Mr. West said, his expression softening. "Jade, Tori, we may need some time to process this."
Tears welled up in Jade's eyes as she said, "Mind if we excuse ourselves?"
Mrs. West casually replies, "Of course Jade."
Jade grabs Tori's arm and they go upstairs to her old bedroom. She locks the door behind her and puts Tori in front of her.
"Nice place you got here." Tori says awkwardly.
"Shut up! That's not why I brought you up here!" Jade angrily snaps. "I should've known this was a bad idea! You just had to go and be a hero, like you always did!"
"Jade, you have no right to be angry with me." Tori retorts. "You threatened to break up with me if I didn't tell Beck about our relationship, so why do I have to let you shake in your boots and hide our relationship from your parents?"
"This isn't about you Tori!" Jade yells.
Tori yells back "The hell it isn't! I'm your girlfriend, and I don't wanna be afraid of anyone! Don't you trust me?"
Jade calms down a bit. "Of course I do!"
"Then maybe you should act like it!" Tori simply states, ending the conversation as she marches out of the bedroom.
"Wait, where are you going?" Jade asks, confused.
"I'm going to a bar. You made this more stressful than necessary." Tori says, defeated.
Tori heads out of the elder Wests' house and doesn't return from the bar until after midnight. She goes up to Jade's room in her stupor, but discovers the door is locked. Tori huffs in annoyance and decides to crash on the couch for the night.
