Book 3 Chapter 21: Sozin's Comet, Part 4: Avatar Luz
Amity's Intro
Water. Earth. Fire. Air.
Long ago, the four nations lived in harmony. Then, everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked. Only the Avatar, master of all four elements, could stop them, but when the world needed her most, she vanished. A hundred years passed, and me, Willow and Gus discovered the new Avatar, an airbender named Luz. and although her airbending skills are great, she has a lot to learn before she's ready to save anyone.
But I believe Luz can save the world.
The episode opens with a reddish sky due to Sozin's Comet as the camera pans to the left. The scene cuts to Belos throwing a left-curved fire blast, followed with a right-curved blast. He fires a straight blast. Cuts to inside Luz's earth sphere shield as she endures the blasts.
(Yelling out to Luz tauntingly while using a flamethrower blast with his hair swaying in the wind.) "Come on out, Avatar! You can't hide in there forever!" Belos shouted
The scene changes to the airship fleet. Gus, Willow, Camila and Boscha are running on top of one of three airships.
"Boscha, metalbend the rudder so it's jammed in a turning position. The ship will spiral and slam into the others." Willow said
"Got it!" Boscha said (She moves Willow out of the way, spits into her hands, and rubs them together. Boscha grips and metalbends the rudder while grunting in effort, and the Imperial Firebenders inside the ship crash into the wall, and due to the action, the ship crashes into the others.)
"Have I ever mentioned how sweet it is that you invented metalbending?" Willow asked
(Pleased.) "You could stand to mention it more." Boscha said
A firebender comes out of the ship and fires at Gus, Willow, Camila and Boscha. Dragging Gus, Camila and Boscha along, Willow jumps off the ship, planting her sword in the side of the vessel to stop their descent. She manages to slow them down, though they still fall off and roughly land on a platform below, Gus and Camila manage to catch themselves before they could fall, but Willow broke her leg in the process, and her sword embeds itself in the metal just in front of her. Boscha, however, falls off the platform, though Willow manages to grab hold of her hand at the last moment.
(In pain.) "My leg! Hang on Boscha!" Willow said
"Aye, aye, Captain." Boscha said
Two firebenders emerge on the platforms beside them, posing a threat from two sides. As one of the soldiers is about to firebend at them, Willow throws her boomerang at him, knocking him out. She kicks her sword into her hand and throws it at the remaining soldier's platform, it cuts right through the metal and plummets to the forest below.
(Sadly.) "Bye, space sword." Willow said
More Imperial Firebenders come outside, ready to finish the group as Gus and Camila got back up and prepared to defend against them. Willow also starts to lose her grip on Boscha.
"I don't think boomerang's coming back, guys. It looks like this is the end." (Boscha starts crying and the firebenders run away. The airship gets struck by a different one and Willow lets Boscha fall onto it before jumping down herself, hurting her leg again in the process. She falls over in pain as Gus and Camila jump down to her aid.)
"How did that happen? Did Willow's boomerang do that?" Camila asked
(Looking up.) "No, Zora did." Gus said (They see Zora riding on the last functioning airship with a triumphant smile.)
The scene changes to Luz and Belos' battle. Belos is still throwing fire blasts at Luz. He blasts Luz a few more times and rises up to fly toward the shell to shoot an enormous, continuous blast of fire at Luz. Belos steps back to charge another intense attack causing Luz's rock shield to be crushed and Luz protects herself with an airbending shield but is pushed back by the force of the attack, crashing into a rock pillar. The scar on her back is hit with a point of the rock, causing her to flashback to when she was shot by lightning. Cut to her during the Avatar State as Moku explains how the ability works. Cut to Kyoshi as the camera pans across revealing more Avatars, all with their eyes lit up. Cut briefly to Moku, before cutting back to the Avatar line. Cut again briefly to Luz entering the Avatar State in the catacombs, and back to the Avatar line. Cut briefly to Luz opening her eyes in the Avatar State and to the large Avatar State version of herself she saw while meditating. Cut back to Belos approaching Luz who is covered by a pile of rubble.
"Come on out, little girl. You're about to be …" Belos didn't finish
Luz jumps out, now in the Avatar State, and grabs Belos by his goatee. Belos tries to firebend at the Avatar, but Luz merely knocks his hand away. She creates a blast of air sending Belos flying backward. Cut briefly to an over the shoulder of Luz view of Belos being forced away, crashing into a pillar of rock. He falls down to the ground and as the dust clears he looks up at Luz in the sky with a sphere of air around him. Luz proceeds to roar and creates fire out of her mouth, fists and feet. Luz creates a massive gust of air causing Belos to cover himself as he groans in struggle. Pillars of earth disintegrate and move toward Luz as other pieces of rock rise up from the ground to surround Luz. Water also rises toward Luz as she creates a ring of fire around herself. The earth begins to create a ring inside the air sphere as the water continues to rise up and form another ring inside the earth sphere. Cut to Belos who watches, covering his head with his arms. Cut back to Luz as the camera zooms out to show her surrounded by a ring of water, a ring of earth, a sphere of air and a ring of fire.
The scene changes to the liberation of Ba Sing Se as Wrath rises out of the ground with earthbending. He turns around as Fire Nation tanks appear and fire on him, but he blocks it with earthbending. He lowers the barrier smiling. He shoots rocks at the holes where they shoot fire. He subsequently uses earthbending to shoot them into the air and they land piled on top of one another while the soldiers come out the tank groaning in pain. Cut to Kaldo as he burns the Fire Nation flag on Ba Sing Se Royal Palace to reveal the Earth Kingdom insignia.
The scene changes to Luz and Belos. Luz charges at Belos, ramming him, and blows him off his Elemental Sphere. Belos flies away from Luz. Luz uses earthbending to shoot machine gun-like earth bullets at him. Luz chases a fleeing Belos.
The scene changes to the Comet-Enhanced Agni Kai. A few small flames can be seen, and in the middle of them is a badly injured Lilith. She tries to get up, but she is too hurt from the lighting strike and he falls down. Eda rushes to try and help her, but Kikimora launches a fire blast in front of her before she can reach her. She laughs maniacally and shoots lightning which Eda dodges. Lilith attempts to get back up, but is too weak and can do nothing but watch as Kikimora shoots another lightning bolt at Eda, which she dodges. Amity turns to watch as Kikimora lands on a roof nearby. She begins charging another lightning attack.
"I'd really rather our family physician look after Little Lulu if you don't mind." (Kikimora shoots lightning and fire at her from the roof of a building. Eda manages to dodge them all and hides behind a column nearby. To Lilith in a taunting manner.) "LuLu, you don't look so good!" Kikimora shouted
She shoots at Eda again. Eda manages to dodge her and moves behind another column. She spots water nearby and bends it onto the roof, but Kikimora has moved. Kikimora comes from behind her on fire jets and Eda is forced to flee. She uses the nearby water channel to make ice to slide on as Kikimora chases after her and fires another blast of fire which vaporizes it completely. Kikimora unleashes a large burst of fire, but Amity shoots her own fire that has changed from a normal color to green for Eda to get away. Amity slides off the ice path to lure Kikimora away, but trips on a grate and sees some water below. She looks up and grabs some chains hanging from the wall. Cut to a wide-view of the area as Kikimora approaches the grates.
"There you are, filthy princess!" Kikimora said
After a brief stare down, Eda uses multiple water whips to force Kikimora onto the grate. Kikimora is about to shoot lightning at Amity when Eda freezes both Amity and Kikimora with the water under the grate. Amity melts the water around her with her flames and chains Kikimora's hands together tied to the grate. Eda bends the water back into the grate, freeing the two. After Amity catches her breath, she tightens the chains to make sure Kikimora cannot get free and rushes to Lilith with Eda following behind. Cut to Amity as she rolls Lilith onto her back for Eda to begin healing her. Lilith opens her eyes, feeling the pain lessen, and smiles weakly at Amity and Eda, who smiles back as Amity sheds a tear.
"Thank you, Amity, Eda." Lilith said
"I think we're the ones who should be thanking you." Eda said
They help her up. Kikimora pants in anger, screams in madness, and breathes fire, writhing in an attempt to break free. Finally she stops and begins to cry uncontrollably. Amity, Eda and Lilith watch in horror and pity.
The scene changes to Avatar Luz and Phoenix Emperor Belos. Luz still chases Belos and uses earthbending to move two pillars in front of Belos, who recoils and flies away. Luz sends a wave of water at Belos, causing him to crash to the ground. As Belos recovers and looks up, Luz bursts through the pillar he landed near. Belos retreats backward and shoots a stream of fire at Luz. In slow motion, Luz drops to the ground narrowly missing Belos who propels himself away with fire from his feet. Luz rises and begins following the fleeing Belos again. Belos lands on a pillar and launches a wide fire blast at Luz, who uses earthbending to move two large pillars to protect herself. Luz breaks and lets the pillars fall as Belos flies away again. Luz unleashes multiple blasts of fire toward Belos, who manages to dodge them. Belos lands on the side of a pillar and launches three similar fire blasts at an approaching Luz, who uses air and water to disperse them. Luz fires a strong blast of air at Belos, disintegrating the pillar he stood on but he manages to get away. Luz continues to chase him as Belos looks back, realizing Luz is catching up. Luz moves her arm in a circular motion causing water to wrap itself around Belos' leg and up to his outstretched arm, whipping him around, before slamming him on top of a pillar. Luz flies forward and earthbends Belos' hands and feet to the ground, trapping him. Helpless, Belos watches fearfully as Luz hovers over him, her voice echoing with the fury of her predecessors.
(With the voices of all previous Avatars.) "Fire Emperor Belos, you and your forefathers have devastated the balance of this world, and now you shall pay the ultimate price!" (Luz, under control of her past lives, combines all four elements together for her final attack. At the last second, however, she manages to regain control, she comes out of the Avatar State, lets her attack die out, and floats to the ground, freeing Belos in the process. She now speaks in her normal voice.) "No, I'm not gonna end it like this." Luz said
"Even with all the power in the world, you are still weak!" Belos said
Belos moves to attack Luz who senses it with the seismic sense she learned from Boscha. She stamps down and lifts a foot up, dragging a pillar of earth along with her, deflecting Belos' attack and binding him inside the rock. She circles Belos and proceeds to bind his other hand as Belos attempts to attack again. She pulls the rocks down into the earth slightly, causing Belos to kneel. Belos attempts one final fire breath attack, but Luz uses airbending to stop and approach him and puts one hand on Belos' forehead, and one on his chest, while he watches in horror.
Luz closes her eyes and it flashes back to Luz's meeting with the lion turtle.
"In the era before the Avatar, we bent not the elements but the energy within ourselves." the Lion turtle said
The lion turtle places his paw in a similar position to Luz's hands on Belos using its claws. The claws begin to glow green light as the camera cuts to a close-up of the lion turtle's eye before fading to Luz. Luz's head arches back and blue energy shines out of her eyes and mouth into the sky. Cut to a side-view of the event before cutting to a close-up of Belos' terrified face as his eyes and mouth begin to shine out red energy. Luz's, followed by Belos', bodies become consumed by the blue and red energies. Cut to a wide-view of the area showing half blue and half red energy in the sky.
(Luz remembering.) "To bend another's energy, your own spirit must be unbendable or you will be corrupted and destroyed." the Lion turtle said
As he speaks, Belos' energy begins to make its way to Luz's body, consuming the blue and replacing it with red energy. Cut to a view above Luz looking down at her face as the energy reaches her face and continues to cover the beams shining out her mouth and eyes. Cut to a side-view as the red light begins to take control and the blue light diminishes. Cut to a close-up of Luz as the red energy has taken over almost completely with just one eye left. The blue energy begins to disappear, but at the last second it blasts out of Luz's eyes, overwhelming the red energy in the process and proceeding to take over Belos' own body. Cut to a wide shot of the area as Luz completely takes over Belos' energy and an intense beam of blue energy erupts into the sky. The beam disappears and Belos falls to the ground as Luz releases him. Belos attempts to rise and attack, but falls back exhausted and unable to bend.
(Out of breath.) "What? What did you do to me?" Belos asked
"I took away your firebending. You can't use it to hurt or threaten anyone else ever again." Luz said
Luz steps forward and looks toward the sea as fire spreads on the land below. Luz breathes deeply and enters the Avatar State briefly, showing her control of the ability. Luz begins to bend the water from the ocean below to extinguish the fires. Cut to many shots of the water rising to extinguish the fires. Cut back to Luz as she lowers the water back to its normal level. Cut to a side-view of Luz as the camera zooms out as King returns to Luz's shoulder. Cut to the comet flying away as Gus, Willow, Camila, Boscha and Zora are seen leaving the airship they were on. Willow is being carried by Camila and Boscha due to her broken leg.
"You did it! You should've seen yourself, it was amazing! You were all like" (Pretends to be Luz fighting Belos while adding sound effects.) "and the Fire Emperor was all like" Willow said (Pretends to be Belos struggling and groaning.)
(Pointing to the exhausted Belos while approaching him.) "So did you, you know ... finish the job?" Zora asked
(Defiantly and slowly.) "I'm still alive." Belos said (Zora backs away from him.)
"I learned there was another way to defeat him and restore balance. I took his bending away." Luz said
(Surprised.) "Wow! Who taught you that?" Gus asked
"A giant lion turtle." Luz said
(Smiling.) "You have the craziest adventures when you disappear." Boscha said
"Well, look at you, buster. Now that your firebending is gone I guess we should call you the Loser Emperor." Willow said
(Weakly.) "I am the Phoenix Emperor!" Belos said (Flops on the ground while semi-conscious and drooling.)
(Mockingly.) "Oh, sorry. Didn't mean to offend you, Phoenix Emperor of Getting His Butt Whooped." Boscha said
(Pathetically.) "Yeah! Or how about the Emperor of the ... Guys Who ... Don't Win?" Zora asked
(Pointing at Zora before pointing to herself, gently.) "Leave the nicknames to us, honey." Boscha said
Cut to a shot of the comet leaving, returning the sky to the darkness of night time. Cuts to inside the Fire Nation Royal Palace. Lilith is having trouble putting on her Fire Emperor robes due to her injury.
"You need some help with that?" a voice said from behind (Lilith turned to see Lai standing behind her.)
"Lai! You're okay! They let you out of prison?" Lilith asked
"My uncle pulled some strings. And it doesn't hurt when the new Fire Emperor is your girlfriend." Lai said
"So does this mean you don't hate me anymore?" Lilith asked
(Blushes.) "I think it means I actually kind of like you." (They kiss. When they break apart, Lai's tone and expression changes to a serious and stern one.) "But don't ever break up with me again!" Lai said (Lilith grins nervously, before they hug again.)
In the Fire Nation Coronation Plaza, people from all over the world have congregated for the coronation of the new Fire Emperor, among which several familiar faces, The Duke hugs Boscha, and she reciprocates as Pipsqueak, Hama and members of the Foggy Swamp Tribe watch. Amity, Gus and Willow look for and find Chief Hakoda.
"Dad!" Gus shouted (he, Amity and Willow run to Hakoda and embrace him.)
"I heard what you kids did. I am the proudest father in the world." (Turns to Gus.) And your mother would be proud, too." Hakoda said (Gus sheds a few tears of joy while touching his necklace.)
The Kyoshi Warriors approach.
"There's my favorite warriors! I have to admit, I kind of missed the face paint. So how does it feel to be in uniform again?" Gus asked
(Appearing from behind.) "It feels great!" Ky Mee said
(Protects Zora and bends some water towards Ky Mee.) "Careful, Zora! Ky Mee is pretending to be a Kyoshi Warrior again." Gus said
"It's okay. She's one of us now." Zora said (Gus turns to Ky Mee before turning back to Zora, with a stunned look for both while dropping the water he was bending.)
"Yeah, the girls and I really bonded in prison. And after a few chi-blocking lessons, they said I could join their group. We're going to be best friends forever." Ky Mee said (She hugs two other warriors and they all smile.)
Cut to inside the Royal Palace, where Luz, now wearing the robes and necklace of an airbending master, opens her eyes from her meditation as Lilith approaches, still wearing the Fire Emperor attire.
"I can't believe a year ago my purpose in life was hunting you down. And now …" Lilith started
"And now we're friends." Luz said
"Yeah, we are friends." Lilith said
"I can't believe a year ago I was still frozen in a block of ice. The world's so different now." Luz said
(Puts a hand on Luz's shoulder.) "And it's gonna be even more different... when we build it together." Lilith said (They hug warmly and go outside.)
Cut to outside the palace with people from the Fire Nation, the Water Tribe, the Earth Kingdom and the Foggy Swamp Tribe all outside. Cut to a side-view as Lilith walks past while a gong is struck. Cut to an overhead view of the crowd with Lilith approaching. The crowd cheers. Front view of Lilith as she raises her hand.
"Please. The real hero is the Avatar." (Luz walks next to Lilith. Crowd cheers again. Luz turns her head slightly. Cut to a side-view of Amity. The camera rotates as she smiles up at Luz proudly. Cut to an overhead view of Luz and Lilith, their backs to the camera, looking out at the crowd.) "Today this war is finally over!" (Cut briefly to Taru, Kyro, Mechanist and Teo as the crowd cheers. Cut to a front view of Lilith.) "I promised my lieutenant, Kaldo, that I would restore the honor of the Fire Nation. And I will." (Panning front view of Lilith and Luz, as seen from the crowd's perspective.) "The road ahead of us is challenging. A hundred years of fighting has left the world scarred and divided." (Cut to a side shot of Luz, rotating around, as she turns to see Lilith smile at her, before turning back to the crowd.) "But with the Avatar's help, we can get it back on the right path and begin a new era of love and peace." Lilith said
Lilith kneels down, preparing to be crowned Fire Emperor. Cut to a Fire Sage approaching with the headpiece.
(Puts the Fire Emperor headpiece into Lilith's top knot.) "All hail Fire Emperor Lilith!" the Fire Sage said (Everyone cheers again. Lilith rises.)
Cut to Lilith walking toward the cheering crowd, gesturing to Luz to follow her. Luz approaches and they look briefly at each other before looking out at the crowd. Cut to Lilith walking to the Fire Nation Prison Tower. Cuts to the inside as she enters Belos' cell.
(Sarcastically.) "I should count myself lucky. The new Fire Emperor has graced me with her presence in my lowly prison cell." Belos said
"You should count yourself lucky that the Avatar spared your life." Lilith said
"Hmph." Belos muttered
"Banishing me was the best thing you could have done for my life. It put me on the right path. Perhaps your time in here could do the same for you." Lilith said
"Why are you really here?" Belos asked
"Because you're going to tell me something." (Bends closer to Belos, gravely.) "Where is my mother?" Lilith asked
In Ba Sing Se, kids are now using the stacked Fire Nation tanks as a game. Cut to the Jasmine Dragon, Appa looking in from the outside. Cut inside as Lilith is serving Team Avatar tea and Kaldo is playing the tsungi horn. Luz is playing with King. Willow is painting a picture.
"Lilith, stop moving! I'm trying to capture the moment. I wanted to do a painting, so we always remember the good times together." Willow said
"That's very thoughtful of you, Willow." (Suddenly looks annoyed. Cuts to Willow's painting, which is very unlike the group.) "Wait, why did you give me King's horns?" Camila asked
"That's your hair bun!" Willow said
"At least you don't look like a boar-q-pine! My hair is not that spiky!" Eda said
"I look like a man." Lai said
"And why did you paint Zora firebending?" Gus asked
"I thought it looked more exciting that way." (King jumps on to the table and chitters.) "Oh, you think you can do a better job, King?" Willow asked (King chitters again as Luz goes outside.)
(Points at painting.) "Hey, my belly's not that big anymore. I've really trimmed down." Kaldo said
"Well I think you all look perfect!" Boscha said (They laugh.)
Luz walks past Appa, petting him briefly, before she moves to watch the sun set. Amity approaches from behind with a smile on her face and turns to Luz. Luz turns to look at her and she smiles back. Cut to a close-up of Amity smiling and blushing. She places a hand on her shoulder and they hug. Cut to a close-up view of Luz before cutting to Amity as they smile and open their eyes. They step out of the embrace and look out at the sun set as the camera pans back, but cuts back to Amity turning to face Luz. Luz turns to face her and Amity passionately kisses Luz, who returns it and they embrace each other as they kiss. Cut to a shot of them still kissing with the sun on the horizon and Ba Sing Se in the background as the camera pans up to the sky.
