Just a little something. I own nothing and hope you enjoy.
She's dead. Her hand touches the place on her chest where she was struck by the stake, rubbing the shadow of pain. The leaves around her crunch under her boots as she shifts, trying to figure out where she is when she hears the falls not far from her. As she takes a step in that direction a voice stops her.
"Hello, gorgeous."
Her smile is instant as she turns. "Well, aren't you a sight for sore eyes," she tells Enzo as he envelops her in a tight hug, looking just as handsome as he had been all that time ago.
"I've certainly missed you too," he admits, pulling away.
Her eyes scan the woods that surround them. "Where are we?"
"The other side," he explains simply. "It'll change once you've adjusted. It won't be dark forever. It's just your subconscious. The fear of dying is great in some."
With those words, a patch of sunlight peaks out from behind a darkened cloud. "What do you do here?" She notices she's surrounded by nothing but trees and patches of sunlight.
He laughs. "Whatever I want," he says before sobering. "This isn't the end like we all thought. We're no longer with the living, but we still live. You could, if you wanted, start where you left off. With some minor adjustments of course."
"Is everyone here?" she asks, remembering the veil dropping because of Silas and how the witches had attacked her at graduation.
He nods. "It gets exhausting holding onto the hate and vengeance from before you died though. I doubt anyone would attack you and besides, we're already dead. What harm could you really do to someone?"
She nods in understanding, but says with a smile, "So, you haunt people?"
His smile is wide. "Just Bonnie."
"Stalker," she murmurs before her eyebrows lift in question. "My dad…"
But Enzo shakes his head. "He never transitioned, so he went to the human beyond."
Her hopeful smile drops at the thought of not being able to see him again. She'd known she wouldn't see her mom and she's okay with that. She knew deep in her heart her mom would be happy wherever she was. There was one person though. One person who'd she'd harbored so much regret over. The person who chased her for years. Who'd she desperately regretted running from at his end and until the day she tragically died. She wondered if he had watched over her through the decades since his death. She had to admit she not only felt regret when thinking of him, but also longing. She'd been so stubborn, thinking they'd truly had forever to play cat and mouse. She still remembered the day Rebekah had called and told her Klaus was set to die. She remembered the shooting pain in her heart as she collapsed to her office floor and how nearly an hour later, she'd picked herself up and packed a bag. But now she wondered where he was. Had her feelings been one sided? No, they couldn't have been.
"He's been waiting," Enzo says, as if he's read every thought she's had. "Just as he said he would." She can't suppress the beaming smile that lifts her lips, which seems to clear the clouds in the sky, filling the woods with warmth and light. Enzo smiles in return. "You'll run into him if he doesn't find you first."
He starts to walk away before she calls to him. "Where are you going? Won't I see you again?"
He smiles and places a chaste kiss to her forehead. "You can't get rid of me that quickly, but I have somewhere I need to be. Bonnie just had her first great grandchild, you know."
She smiles. "They were going to name her Ayanna if I'm not mistaken."
"And I'll have to elbow my way through some witches to get a front row seat." He smirks one last time before slowly disappearing.
She takes a breath of the warm air and starts walking. She doesn't know where she's going in the least, but she figures wandering never hurt. Her feet finally stop in a wildflower filled meadow. The fragrance of the flowers and the sun shining on her face calms her, but questions still race through her mind. Not only about her new home, but of him. Where was he?
As soon as the thought occurs, she can feel a presence at the edge of the meadow, a smile gracing her features before she even turns around.
"Hello, love."
