Po ran his paw down his face. So much had been heaved on his plate that it would probably take a lifetime to digest. It wasn't a delicious and steamy pile of dumplings or the piping hot bowl of noodles, but a precarious dish. The dish in question was a dish that wasn't food, yet it was something delicate. A carefully prepared recipe could do great things, while a disgusting recipe would result in a sour spirit. A terrible recipe could lead to all manners of crime and evil.
The delicacy in question was a baby, a wolf cub, with white fur. The child was sleeping soundly in a tiny bed. Although Tai Lung was still a sore subject, Shifu still kept Tai Lung's old toys in storage. One never knew when another orphan would be left on the Jade's Palace's doorstep. But, this baby wasn't an abandoned foundling, but a child his ever-loyal apprentice had brought.
"Okay...I'm just trying to understand things...you killed the witch, but...YOU TOOK HER BABY!?"
Zhen made a hushing noise as the child stirred from the sudden outburst. The cub's tiny whimpers subsided and he resumed his peaceful slumber. Po watched as the cub's squirms ended but resumed his attention towards Zhen.
"Look, Po, I know you're upset, but I had no choice," Zhen threw her arms into the air, "His mother was dead and he was just lying there helpless, what else was I supposed to do!?"
Po stared at Zhen for a moment, "I wouldn't steal him...but I guess I can see your point?"
"When I saw him, I started thinking "What would Po do?"," Zhen continued.
Once more, Po stared at Zhen with a look that screamed "Really?", "I wouldn't steal babies that's for sure."
"Would you cut that out? You know I did the right thing!" Zhen insisted, "Besides, he's certainly better off here than with that psycho mother of his."
Siwang having a son wasn't something Po had expected. From what he had heard of her and seen of her magic, the Bone Witch was a twisted-minded individual. Pure evil at its finest, and Po had faced plenty of evil villains in his Dragon Warrior career.
"If he had stayed with her, he could have turned into 'Evil Necromancer Overlord Junior' or something," Zhen formed the odd combination of words, showing just how much of an influence her teacher was on her.
Po wasn't sure if Siwang had any living minions, but living or dead, they certainly would have taken in their young master and taught him his wicked mother's ways. The idea of another grown necromancer terrorizing China wasn't a pleasant thought. Tai Lung had started innocent, and he was certain the same applied to Shen, but they had turned into two of China's biggest villains. Although he had gained their respect in death, and they had returned to the Spirit World after the whole incident with the Chameleon, their misdeeds would remain entrenched within everyone's memories.
"When you put it that way it makes sense, still, what are we going to do with him?" Po asked.
No one in the Jade Palace had any preparations for a new baby. Viper was a possibility, for she had experienced it while visiting her sister's family.
"I'll take full responsibility," Zhen's answer was abrupt to the point Po was greatly taken off guard.
"What?" Po's response was equally blunt.
Zhen felt Po's eyes on her causing her tail to stand erect, "I-I-I'll take care of him, I'll feed him, I'll change him, I'll give him clothes, toys, you name it!"
This sudden change in Zhen's demeanor made Po widen his eyes, "Zhen, are you okay?"
The vixen wasn't terrible with children, but this sudden declaration wasn't something Po expected. He had never pictured Zhen as a maternal sort.
"I'm fine, look I'm fine," Zhen's words seemed as if she was reassuring herself, "Okay...I don't know if this was a good idea, but my gut tells me it was the right one."
A gut feeling was often a hit-or-miss situation. Zhen was a clever fox who carefully considered her actions before going through with them. This action wasn't something Po expected, especially from Zhen, yet he couldn't refuse the notion that this was right.
"So, what's his name?"
The question was abrupt, but Zhen hardly looked surprised. She glanced at the slumbering child, watching his tiny chest rise and fall, and something within her stirred. Something unlocked from within and a single name escaped her lips.
"Keye."
A/N: I'm terrible. Short chapters but I hope I deliver.
