You sigh, taking a deep breath. This decision is life-changing, and not just for your girlfriend. And yet, after a few seconds of deliberation, you follow your heart on this matter.
"You can change your DNA, but keep your name," you beg her. "Because you'll always be Himiko to me."
Himiko gives you a big toothy grin before hugging you. "Thank you for understanding, Kaz. And you don't have to worry. 'Cause I'll always be your Himiko."
"That's not exactly what I meant, but I'm not complaining," you smile back before kissing her.
After a few seconds of silence, enjoying each other's mouths, you step apart.
"Well," you continue. "We should at least get your mom's permission, right?"
"Oh," Himiko realizes. "I never even thought about that."
You shake your head at Himiko's antics. "I guess you'll have to face your mother's wrath then."
"That would be bad? My ex-mom was always mad at me, and you don't have the best relationship with Chiyo. Is it… not normal?"
"No," you reiterate. "I know I didn't leave off with my parents on the best of note either, but that's not how families should be. I hope to fix it when we get back to Japan, too. Trust me, you'll regret it if she disapproves."
"Then we'll ask Mom. I don't want her to be angry at me."
"Good choice," I approve. "Though we should do this somewhere private."
"Like the bathroom?"
"No! Some place not available by the public!"
"Ooh. Okay."
With a plan established, we head back to the table.
Let's just hope that Cathy goes along with this.
It takes a little time to finish dinner and arrive at Melissa's apartment. Throughout the dessert, the conversation becomes awkward; Himiko is getting anxious, but you've luckily convinced her that doing this away from prying eyes is best, especially since this would technically be an illegal use of quirk if done in public. On a happier note, since you still have the keys, you were able to convince Cathy you should spend the night here rather than back at the camp.
As you enter the apartment, you sigh in relief and get situated. "I'll get us some drinks," you offer. "Non-alcoholic, of course."
"Are you sure there isn't alcohol?" Cathy nearly begs, with me long since picking up on the fact that the pro-hero might have difficulty relaxing without one.
"Maybe," you tease her. Would you mind if we split it with the birthday girl? We can both physically make ourselves legal drinking age."
"We both know the laws are designed around date of birth for both drinking and intercourse."
The wind is taken out of your sails as Cathy takes control of the conversation in one sentence. "I take it you would prefer blood?"
"Yes," you quickly agree. "And I'll get you, and only you, our finest bottle.
"That's very kind of you," Cathy acknowledges. "But are you sure that everything has been chilled? You haven't opened that fridge in a month."
"Akia came by a few days ago to restock for us. It wasn't until a few days ago that plans were changed to the restaurant, after all."
"Who did that?" Cathy tilts her head.
"Guess that confirms it's Julius," you realize. "I'll shoot him a text about it later as thanks."
Quickly returning with a bottle of fine wine for Cathy and two cups of your freshest blood, the three of you raise your glasses.
"To Himiko Bate," you cheer. "Happy birthday."
Cathy shares your enthusiasm for the toast, but Himiko seems even more nervous as the moment of truth draws closer.
The pro-hero immediately notices this. "What's wrong, Himiko?" she says with concern. "You've been acting strange since you and Kazuha returned from the restroom."
Himiko's eyes flash to you; she wants you to handle the reveal. But….
"This is something you must explain yourself, Himiko," you inform your girlfriend. "It would be wrong coming from me."
"What is it?" Cathy presses, worry on her face. "Did something happen?"
"It's more what's about to happen if you should allow it," you clarify before motioning for Himiko to continue.
"My parents… my biological parents… I've realized they were never my true family," Himiko begins. "They treated me like the monster they should be ashamed of. A vampire who would eventually kill someone without remorse. A… villian."
As Himiko gets more emotional as the words leave her lips, she builds up her courage.
"You and Kazuha are the best things to ever happen to me," Himiko explains. "If it wasn't for the both of you, I would've been lost to my quirk's desire to feed. I'm eternally grateful. But…."
"But?" Cathy asks, confused. "That's why you assigned the adoption papers?"
"It's not enough," Himiko blankly counters. "I overheard you and Kazuha in the forest. I know you want a family. And… I can give that to you."
"But you already are family," Cathy reassures.
"Not by blood, though."
Cathy frowns. "That doesn't change anything for me."
"I know," Himiko gives a toothy smile. "But just because it doesn't have to change anything doesn't mean… we can't change anything."
Cathy raises an eyebrow. "What's your idea?"
Himiko goes on to spend the next several minutes talking about the nuances of her quirk, even more than the most straightforward explanation she gave you in the bathroom, and how she could permanently alter her base form's DNA using Cathy's blood… including the risks.
The pro-hero looks to the floor, pensive.
"I don't have Transform," Cathy reminds Himiko. "We don't know what will happen. You could keep your quirk, it could become my quirk, change into something new, or… you could be quirkless."
"I know," Himiko accepts.
"Quirkless?" Cathy says, surprised. "You'd be willing to risk giving it up?"
"As long as I have the two of you in my life, I don't need it," Himiko bears her fangs. "And not because I hate my quirk. Without it, I might never have become friends with Kazuha and met you. But… my family is what matters to me."
Cathy clenches her fist. "I could make a few phone calls. If you're fine with Himiko Toga being officially dead, I could…."
"I-I don't want to go that far," Himiko admits. "I considered it, but that would be a truly fresh start. And I don't want that. I love my friends and the life I built. I'd rather not be… you know… if I don't have to. I want to do this for you, sure, but…."
Cathy nods in understanding. "We'll see. But if you do this, it might be necessary. At least documentation-wise."
"As long as I keep my first name and my friends know the truth, fine," Himiko relents. "No matter what, I want to be Kazuha's 'Himiko.' Just as I promised."
"Then I won't force you," Cathy makes absolutely clear. "But if this is your decision, I will support it absolutely. Though…."
"What is it?" you ask, wanting to clear up any hesitation.
"Just make sure you mix my DNA with yours rather than replace it," Cathy advises. "That way…."
"That was the plan. I still need a dad, after all," Himiko jokes. "I'd rather be 'me' than a younger you anyway."
"Good girl," Cathy praises.
"That's what Kaz calls me during roleplay."
Cathy sends you a glare.
"No-not that type!" you blush, reaching for your pocket to deflect where this conversation was headed, pulling out a vial of Cathy's blood mixed with Himiko's. "Anyway, Himiko, you have nothing holding you back anymore."
"Nope," Himiko gives a final toothy grin as she takes it from you. "Well, uh, down the hatch?"
Without any further fanfare, Himiko quickly swallows the content of the life-changing vial as the changes begin to take effect.
The first and most glaring surprise is that the gray goo that normally accompanies the quirk is absent. The changes happening to Himiko's body are slower, a metamorphosis.
The first thing you notice is her height. Himiko was always a few inches shorter than you. It was enough of a difference that you could, standing on your tiptoes, rest your chin atop her head. That is clearly no longer the case, as Himiko is getting taller. Considering that you've approximately evened out in height, you assume she's grown about three inches, give or take.
The next change is to her pigment, somehow darker and paler at the same time, a natural tan encompassing her previously fair skin tone. Yet it's not all that surprising, given Cathy's partial Mediterranean heritage. It seems it has been passed down to Himiko, making her half-Japanese and half-Mediterranean. Yet, interesting, and perhaps as a nod to Cathy's Star and Stripe form, Himiko's ash-blonde mixes with a bright blonde, creating a color that most would write off as a dirty blonde but that you find absolutely stunning.
Her hair and skin color are not the only things split down the middle. Himiko's eyes lost their epicanthic fold and almond shape, instead turning round with slight upward slants, more in line with Cathy's. And yet, only her right eye matches Cathy's dark blue. Her left slit-like iris remains an almost cat-like golden hue. Knowing Himiko would retain one of her most recognizable features is nearly a relief, not that you let it show on your face.
Himiko's already pretty face slims, her jawline becoming more pronounced. Her wide mouth, previously rather feline in nature, is now more dog-like, in line with Himiko's new spirit animal. Two creatures so at odds with each other, but after several years, the independent, neurotic, and skittish Himiko has transformed into your friendly, fearless, and loyal-to-a-fault girlfriend. And you honestly couldn't be happier to see Himiko so delighted. Besides, the same toothy grin that initially led you to fall in love with Himiko remains.
But as the visual overhaul concludes, Himiko stops smiling as she clenches her stomach and drops to her knees, hugging herself.
"Himiko?!" you look over at her, worried.
"I'm fine," she insists, getting to her feet. "It's just… this feels so right."
Cathy puts a hand on Himiko's shoulder. "You… really are my daughter?"
"Yep," Himiko confirms. "We could get a blood test if you wanted to prove it."
Cathy takes Himiko into a deep hug. "There's no need. I believe it."
Himiko is receptive to Cathy's act of affection and returns it. "I hope you like my gift, Mom."
"I love it."
You give the two a quiet moment, not wanting to ruin it. As the hug breaks itself up, Cathy helps Himiko to her feet. Frowning, Himiko starts pinching at her clothing.
"I'm wearing the wrong bra," she realizes. "Did I go up a size? What do you think, Kazuha?"
You peer at her body…
…
…
…
…
"Kazuha?"
…
…
…
You feel a slight pinch on your cheek. "Ow!"
"Hehehehe! Do you like my growth spurt, then?"
Her toothy grin returns to Himiko's face, though a touch less childish. There's a glint in her eyes. A certain silky darkness only meant for you. An instinct performed for your entertainment.
Cathy coughs into her fist, feeling out of place, which brings Himiko back on track.
"Oh, right!" Himiko blinks. "We should probably test my quirk."
"How are we supposed to do that?"
Himiko immediately turns into a blob of silvery mush before becoming a copy of you.
"Seems like Transform still works," Himiko shrugs, not very fazed. "Though we expected that."
As Himiko dismisses your form, she returns to looking like herself… her new self.
"Guess that really is your base form moving forward," Cathy notes. "But… does your quirk feel any different?"
"I don't really know?" Himiko admits, sitting on the couch and letting her hand rest on its arm. "But I'm not sensing anything. My cravings are still there if a little… diluted?"
"How so?" you wonder.
Himiko scratches her chin with her off-hand. "Well, do you remember when we locked ourselves in a room for a week to see how long we could go without blood, Kaz?"
You nod. "I had to spend the last two days of it alone because you were forced to tap out early."
"Well, my cravings… never go away? They can be sated, but they're always there in the back of my mind. Unlike you, who only has to consume DNA when you're… hungry?"
"Are you feeling them now?" you wonder aloud.
"Well, they aren't gone," Himiko clarifies. "But… it's weaker? Like… when it's been a while since you had lunch but aren't ready for dinner."
"Strange," Cathy muses. "Our hypothesis for Kazuha's lesser cravings is that she has more quirks. Quirks want to be used, but she has plenty of ways to use it, so the yearning only triggers when she's starved of DNA. If that's the case for you now…."
"Then Transform changed so you can use it another way," you follow Cathy's line of reasoning, a little horrified.
"Yeah," Cathy agrees, starting to get visibly worried. "And you have my DNA."
There's a lingering silence as tension fills the room.
"Do-does that mean…."
"That your quirk might have evolved?" Cathy finishes Himiko's train of thought. "There's only one way to know for sure."
Himiko gazes down to the palm of her hand, still resting. "I wish this couch would turn pink!"
Instantly, what was once a faded blue recliner becomes hot pink, confirming your fears.
You don't have time to consider Himiko's phrasing of New Order as wishes is inefficient. Because the reality of the situation has hit you like a ton of bricks, you aren't the only person who has multiple quirk factors anymore.
Cathy lunges for Himiko's shoulders, grasping them tightly. "Himiko," the pro-hero commands. "You have to trust me."
"What's wrong, Mom?"
"My quirk… it's terrifying."
"So?"
Cathy sighs. "Tomorrow, we'll take you to one of my most trusted colleagues for a proper quirk evaluation. But until then, you have to promise me you won't use it."
Himiko, feeling the fear in Cathy's voice, does not contest her mother's words. "I'm sorry."
"No," Cathy corrects. "You haven't done anything wrong. I just… I don't want you to hurt yourself."
Or anyone else.
"I still have a vial of my original blood," Himiko offers.
"We don't need to resort to that," Cathy insists. "At least, not now. Besides, we must understand how this is possible and how Transform evolved. We don't know anything about this. Changing your DNA back might not affect your new quirk factor."
"Okay," Himiko accepts. "We'll go to the doctor tomorrow morning. And I'll be sure not to mess with it until we know how it works."
"Exactly what I needed to hear," Cathy admits, letting go of Himiko. "I'm sorry. It's just…."
"All for One?" you deduce. "You don't want Himiko to become a target."
"Yeah," Cathy seems solemn. "If Himiko's version of New Order holds a candle to my own, then her quirk's potential…."
"It's something to worry about in the morning," you insist. "So maybe Himiko's decision had some unforeseen consequences. Whatever. We should be celebrating!"
Cathy becomes determined. "Of course."
Quickly downing her glass of wine, Cathy grabs her purse.
"Though I still need to make some arrangements," Cathy bluntly states.
"We can't stay?" Himiko says, unable to hide her disappointment.
Cathy chuckles. "Oh, you can. I mean, I'm not oblivious to your… desires."
"Mom!" Himiko blushes.
"I'll let you two have fun," Cathy rolls her eyes, becoming more relaxed. "Besides, you're both women. It's not like I have to worry about grandkids."
"Unless we use transform," Himiko blurts out before covering her mouth.
"Then don't," Cathy says sternly. "And if you do, I don't want to know about it."
"But you just said…."
"You're both adults now. Don't be stupid and use protection if it comes to that. It's not rocket science."
Cathy shakes her head.
"Actually, I don't have to teach you the birds and the bees, do I?"
"Oh, don't worry," Himiko beams. "I've turned into both a bird and a bee. I even convinced a hive to make me their queen once. That was fun."
Cathy raises an eyebrow.
"She means an actual queen bee," you smirk.
"I figured," Cathy says, exasperated. "Anyway… don't stay up too late, Himiko. Remember, you have a physical tomorrow."
Himiko gives a mock salute. "You got it, mom."
Hiding her worry under a soft smile, Cathy blows a kiss at the two of you before making her departure.
A silent moment remains before you head to the door, locking it behind you and ensuring the deadbolt is in place.
Turning around, you notice Himiko fidgeting with her clothing, discarding the clothes that were so uncomfortable for her just minutes before.
"Himiko?"
"Oh, uh," she blushes, putting up an air of fake confidence as if this was always the plan when she clearly acted without thinking. "Like what you see?"
Instead of answering, you bite the inside of your cheek, letting your saliva be tainted with the flavor of blood, before giving Himiko a deep kiss, making her eyes pop open just before they roll upwards, covered by her eyelids fluttering closed. A ravenous attraction.
That's what this night is all about, after all. It's Himiko's eighteenth birthday, and you can finally take your relationship to the next level and all that entails.
Your makeout sessions in the months prior lasted longer as your eyes lingered on each other, the anticipation creating tension that could be cut like a knife through butter. Anticipation that could kill. That carried with it noticeable weight. You were childhood friends turned lovers. A trope, sure, but Himiko could never be a trope to you.
God, Himiko is the sexiest thing I ever laid eyes on. I didn't think she could be more beautiful, but she's perfect.
You know Himiko was looking forward to this too, same as you, if not more so.
That little minx knew what she was doing the last few weeks, shaking her ass as she walked and winking with a big toothy grin when she caught me staring. Sayaka must have taught her that!
…
Is it bigger now?
The closer the two of you got to today, the more you teased. Not just how you walked but also how you spoke, giving in to your baser instincts, even in small ways. But playing the long game was just fine with you.
Most don't know how to savor the flavor. How to temper that inner beast, stir the waters, and turn her into putty. Yeah, she teased, alright. But I'm better at the game. And I'll show her a night she won't forget. Himiko deserves no less.
You dip Himiko low before finally breaking the kiss, wiping some excess blood off her lip with your finger, before holding her cheek gently, caressing it as Himiko returns to her senses, realizing that this is real. That the two of you don't have to hold back anymore, dreaming of a far-off moment. Her big, bright eyes never flick away from yours, unsure what to do next or how to proceed. That indecision isn't surprising; it's your first time.
"Come on," you encourage her. "We have the whole night to get to know each other all over again."
"R-right."
Taking her hand, you steer Himiko toward the bedroom.
"Are you ready for this, Ms. Bate?" you question her, not wanting to push past her comfort zone.
"I've been ready for a long time."
Your cheeks become red. "Let's make this a happy birthday then."
The following week flies by faster than you can blink.
After getting picked up by Cathy, you and Himiko head straight for her re-evaluation of her quirk. From it, you learn two things. Firstly, Himiko's version of New Order functions nearly identically to Cathy's version. However, further testing is required to see if the limits of Himiko's two orders are the same, other than the number. Secondly, Himiko didn't just pick up a second quirk; it seems that Himiko's transformation evolved; thus, Himiko is naturally a dual-quirk user, a lot like Pony technically is.
We were talking about Himiko potentially being quirkless, and now she's arguably one of the strongest hero candidates of our generation. If Dad wouldn't let Himiko take the recommended exam before, he's obligated to now, especially with Star & Stripes' backing.
Heh. Take that.
About twenty-four hours after heading back to the hero camp the next night, Himiko gets physically sick. You're not entirely sure why, but a return trip to the hospital reveals that Himiko's quirk has changed again. Despite Himiko's protests, Cathy forced Himiko to attempt to change back to her original form.
…
Emphasis on the word attempt.
Himiko's original blood cannot sate Himiko's hunger and can no longer be a basis for her quirk. Like it or not, Himiko is either stuck in her new body or forced to change into another form, which is too risky to attempt. The only health complications seemed to be the body's visceral reaction to the permanent change. It also seems Transform is becoming… different. The doctor cannot deduce if this meant Transform was damaged or if it was the sub-quirk now. Perhaps, he believes, that Transform could disappear entirely or become a pseudo third-order. Whatever the case, the DNA cravings remain, and the normal functions of Himiko's quirk remain intact.
To ensure that Himiko's life isn't in danger, the medical staff forces Himiko to be admitted. While you and Cathy get additional training to distract yourselves from the issue, you spend most of your time taking shifts at the hospital attending to Himiko's needs. Most of your friends, including the busy Julius and Miles, also come to visit.
Eventually, when the doctors notice Himiko's quirk stabilizes properly, with Transform becoming more like a permanent third order within the New Order quirk, she's released just in time for you to make the closing ceremony of the Central Park Hero Camp.
Cathy takes the stage for the final time.
"Over the last two months, you have all made tremendous progress, and I'm proud of each and every one of you. As you return home, wherever home may be, I hope that none of you forget the friends you met here. Because the most important part of being a hero isn't leaving your mark on the world but on the people around you. And you've all left an impression on my soul in one way or another. I wish you all the best. Thank you for an incredible summer."
You turn to Pony and Jason. "So, I guess this is it? We won't be seeing each other anymore."
"No," Jason admits. "Though you must have put in a good word for me with Cathy because, according to her, if I finish at the academy as the top student in my class, I'll be getting a second chance with the Morphers."
"I didn't do anything," you insist. "It was all of your hard work. But congratulations."
"Not really," Jason scratches the back of his head. "If anything, my hard work has pushed me back. I screwed up."
"Only because you have the spirit of a real hero," Pony interrupts. "You're so cool."
"Well, what about you, squirt," Jason barks. "You still planning on following Kaz and Himiko to Yuuei?"
Pony nods. "I-I might not know everything about my quirk, but that's what hero academia is for. It may be a few months before the entrance exam, but I will try my best. I already fast-tracked some of my studies so I could attend as soon as the spring."
"Guess you'll be hitting the books," Jason quips.
"So will we," you roll your eyes. "Well, more like Himiko. I actually didn't procrastinate doing my school work during my stay in the States."
"What's next for the two of you?" Jason asks.
"We'll finish out our studies back in Japan. After all, I got a student council to get back in shape. Natsumi's had enough on her shoulders as it is as my vice-president, but it clearly isn't as well-oiled of a machine without me there."
"I meant for your relationship."
"Oh, that's easy. Himiko will be moving into my place."
"But what about your family."
You grimace. "Horie decided to move into another dorm. She figured that it would be better for both of us. Besides, it was the one thing keeping Dad from relenting, so…."
"True siblings have their differences, but I'm sure you'll be able to figure them out," Jason reassures. "Not that I have any siblings."
"Then you're talking out of your as -"
"Yep."
You lightly punch him in the arm.
"I'll miss you, big guy," you admit.
"We're all going our own ways," Jason bluntly says. "That's just how life is."
You notice Himiko and Cathy talking off-stage.
"I should probably check that out."
"I'll see you soon," Pony says, determined. "I-I might not be as cool as the rest of you, but…."
"I'm not your Sensei," you roll your eyes.
"Yeah," Jason agrees. "If anything, that's me, considering I'm the one that taught both of you a thing or two about hand-to-hand combat."
"Whatever," you snap playfully. "I'll catch you the next time I'm in the States, Jason."
Wandering over to Himiko and Cathy, you watch Himiko put a hand on her mother's shoulder.
"I wish that if I were ever to amend my orders in any way, including the revocation of this order, Cathleen Bate would know."
You notice Himiko's hand light up for a split second.
"There," Cathy sighs. "If you really are going to study in Japan, at least I'll know how and why you're using my quirk. But please try to avoid using it."
"You don't have to say 'wish,' you know?" you tell your girlfriend, kissing her forehead.
"But it's fun to think of New Order as wishes coming true," Himiko snickers. "I mean, in some ways, it is a wish come true. I do have a proper family now."
Cathy and Himiko hug, and you can't help but be happy for them.
"We don't have long," you remind Himiko. "We've got a long day ahead of us. There's not even a day off between returning home and school."
Cathy looks back at Himiko one more time. "Are you sure you don't want to stay in the States?"
Himiko shakes her head. "Japan is my home with Kaz. And your shore leave is ending soon anyway. It wouldn't feel like home with both of you gone."
Cathy accepts that answer begrudgingly. "I'll come to visit when I can."
"Ditto," Himiko gives a toothy grin, showing off her canines.
As the three of you walk to the edge of the camp, you watch a limo pull up.
At first, you assume it is for one of the rich kids who attended the university. But instead?
You watch Milies get out of the vehicle. "Hey, girls!"
"Miles?" you wonder. "What?"
"The boys and I thought it would be a cool way to surprise you."
"More like Julius wanted to show off and roped you and Gary into this?"
"Yeah," Gary sheepishly admits. "Come on."
Looking at Cathy again, Himiko gives her a peck on the cheek before skipping into the limo, you following closely behind.
Akia is sitting shotgun across from the driver, someone you don't recognize but assume is one of Julius' employees. She nods at you with a smile but stays quiet. The other two boys are piled in the back.
"Man, you really do look different now," Gary comments upon entering the limo, which pulls away from the camp. "It's uncanny."
"You get used to it," Himiko says. "I did, at least."
"That quickly?"
"Well, when your quirk is about transforming into other people, it's pretty easy to adapt, you know?"
Gary seems unconvinced but is not going to argue the point. "I guess."
"It's good to see you," Julius adds. "I truly hope your stay in the States has been memorable, but we wanted to give you one last surprise."
"Miles already said as much," you tell him. "But you really didn't have to do this. First, you got us that incredible reservation for Himiko's birthday, and now this?"
"What can I say?" Julius shrugs. "I take good care of my friends."
Julius peers over at Miles, who doesn't make eye contact. "I don't want your handout, Julius."
"We're worried about you," Gary interrupts. "Are you even going to college? At least Julius will be taking online classes and working at his start-up. You don't have that excuse."
"I'll land on my feet; I always do,"
"And how has that been working out for you lately?" you try to soothe things over.
"If you have the power to do something, and you don't, and then the bad things happen, they happen because of you," Miles reiterates. "My uncle died because I didn't stop the thief. And I'm not going to make that mistake again."
"But what's the point in making support items if you aren't going to use them?" Gary says. "You aren't even trying to get us involved. My dad's got connections in the industry, and Julius' company could invest in it. We could get you…."
"I don't need it," Miles says. "My… support items… are my responsibility."
Himiko puts a hand on Miles' shoulders. "There's nothing wrong with asking for help."
"I know," Miles responds. "But I gotta do what I gotta do. And that means Imma do my own thing."
Noticing the tension, Gary decides to change the topic. "On a brighter note, Ava and I have started dating. Like officially. We kinda got together after Himiko's birthday bash."
"Congrats," Himiko cheers. "Guess we both go -"
"Glad that you listened to me," you concur, wanting to cut Himiko off from saying something crude. "But how did Ember take it?"
"Not great, but… somehow she and Ava are still friends," Gary answers. "Us though? Not so much."
"Well, that's how it works sometimes. The fact that Ava and Ember are still close is a miracle."
"I'm just happy everything is working out."
"We'll be leaving the state soon for university. To begin our careers as pro heroes."
"I'm sure you'll all be amazing at it," Miles says.
"I have no doubt you'll rival your father one day, Gary," Julius predicts. "I have confidence in all of you, honestly. Each of your paths is different, but you all want to do what's right for the world. I'm proud to have known all of you, and I hope I'll continue to do so."
Gary chuckles. "We're all going our separate ways. The only ones staying here in New York are Julius and Miles. Melissa is on I-Island. Pony is heading with the two of you to Yuuei in Japan soon. Jason's going to one of the military academies. And Rae is going soul-searching across the globe."
"I'm almost surprised she did it," Miles muses.
"She… needed a pep talk," Julius reveals. "But she's much happier now."
"I hope so."
"I know so."
Miles' watch starts beeping, causing the boy to tense up.
"Can you drop me off here?"
Julius raises an eyebrow.
"Miles, we've barely made it out of Central Park. If you must go somewhere, we can drop you off on the way to the airport."
"It's fine," Miles presses. "I've got somewhere I gotta be, and it's pretty out of the way. I don't want Himiko and Kazuha to miss their flight."
Julius frowns. However, he doesn't say much else, motioning silently for the driver to comply with Miles' request.
A few moments later, Miles hops out of the limo. "It was great getting to see you both," Miles smiles at you and Himiko. "If you two are ever swinging around this area of New York again, give me a call."
"You have our numbers if you ever need anything, Miles. Take care of yourself."
Miles smirks. "I've got a job. I'll be fine."
"As a pizza delivery driver and photographer?" Julius mutters. "Or should I call you a selfie artist?"
Miles' blood visibly runs cold as he looks away from Julius, glaring at him.
"Stop interfering with the Midsummer Knights' Dream," Julius coldly states. "I'd rather not visit you in a jail cell or, worse, attend your funeral."
"How do you know about that?"
"I know a lot of things, Miles. I told you I look out for my friends. This is your first and last warning."
Miles chooses where he stands on the matter, slamming the limo's door behind him as he fades into the crowd.
As the car pulls away from the curb, the four of you sit in stunned silence.
Gary is the first to break it. "What the fuck was that?"
"Do you remember what Naught said back on I-Island? That the only ones who should kill are those prepared to be killed? Every action has consequences. You shouldn't partake in it if you're unwilling to accept it. That's all."
"What has Miles been up to that you're keeping from us?" you blankly wonder aloud.
"Crying won't bring the dead back to life," Julius continues. "And Miles has been having a temper tantrum since he lost his uncle. It's quite sad, really. Equating strength with justice. Though at least he doesn't think he changes the world with pretty words alone."
Gary seems to pick up the implications of Julius' words. "Vigilantism?"
"It's not my story to tell," Julius shakes his head. "He'll tell us when he's ready. I just hope he does before it's too late."
"Agreed," Himiko says, worry in her voice.
Julius shuffles his feet. "When there is evil in this world that justice cannot defeat, would you taint your hands with evil to defeat evil? Or would you remain steadfast and righteous even if it means surrendering to evil?"
"What does that mean?" Gary ponders.
"It means that as heroes, you might run into a scenario where the end justifies the means. For example, will you kill a villain if it means saving countless lives? Or, in Milies' case, vigilantism. The laws are imperfect, and you must decide your limits as heroes. It's the only piece of advice I have left to give."
"You and your riddles," Gary shakes his head. "Why can't you talk plainly?"
"I agree," Himiko smiles. "I don't understand half the stuff you say."
"I guess I deserve that," Julius' lips curl upwards before reaching into the cooler and grabbing some sodas, which he passes around.
"To your hero academia," he toasts.
You, Gary, and Himiko all beam, ready for the challenges ahead.
"To my hero academia!"
I've been waiting for this my whole life. Everything I've done has prepared me for this. Maybe I haven't fully figured out why I want to be a hero, but I know this is my life. Now, I just have to choose why and how to live it. So look out, Yuuei, cause your Queen is about to become a student.

Relationships:
Horie Koume-Shuzenji:
You two started life together as bunk mates at the orphanage and best friends before you both got adopted into the newly created Shuzenji family. While you got closer to your father, Horie got closer to your mother. Despite this, you remained like sisters, always having one another's back. Yet as you got older and attended high school, Horie felt like a third wheel in your relationship with Himiko. This feeling only got highlighted when you started hanging out with Melissa, sharing a room with her or Himiko most of the time. When Horie realized that she had come to the United States for Kazuha, yet the two barely spent time together, she acknowledged that she didn't want to live in Kaz's shadow anymore. Heading back to Japan, Horie moved out of your shared dorm. She still thinks of Kazuha as a sister and will always have your back, but she has simply realized that she needs to grow up and become her own person.
Sadow Okura:
He was your bully back at the orphanage, and you never got along. Ironically, his quirk was the first that you unlocked, even if it was by accident. You've always wondered if this meant that Sadow wanted you to have a quirk, but you've never had time to dwell on it. You haven't seen him since you moved in with the Shuzenji's, nor do you want to, though you know your father is keeping tabs on him somewhat, at least as of a few years ago, strictly for research purposes.
Benimaru Michi:
The third member of your friend group back from the orphanage, you could never forget one of your first friends. After all, it was you, Horie, and Benimaru against the world. When you got adopted by the Shuzenjis, Benimaru was left alone. Wanting to give your friend a parting gift, you gave him Mr. Fluffles, your childhood teddy bear. In exchange, Benimaru gave you a copy of his quirk since Mr. Fluffles would no longer be there to protect you. Sadly, you lost contact with Benimaru after he got adopted, despite your and Horie's best efforts.
Akia Kuzunoha:
Your caretaker since you were a baby back at the orphanage, you've admittedly always seen her more like your Mom than your adoptive mother. After leaving her job at the orphanage, you were worried you'd never see her again, but she was hired by Nezu to reprise her role as your primary caretaker once again. Your dynamic is undoubtedly different than it used to be, but you care for her greatly.
Nezu Shuzenji:
The principal of Yuuei Academy was initially interested in you because of your potential familial relationship with All for One. However, after getting to know you, Nezu developed a soft spot for you, pulling strings so that he could adopt you. Despite your recent disagreements with him over your relationship with Himiko, you love him dearly, and vice versa. The type of bond that is only possible between a father and his daughter. Considering how things were left off before you went to the States, you don't know what environment you're returning to, especially since you've kinda been a bitch to him lately, like most teenage girls in their rebellious phase.
Chiyo Shuzenji:
While Chiyo is closer to Horie, she cares for you like family. If Akia is your mother, Chiyo is more like a grandmother to you. However, the tension between you and your adoptive parents is clearly more substantial with Chiyo, primarily due to her annoyance with how you treated Horie recently, even if you obviously didn't mean anything malicious from it. Chiyo is stern, but family is family.
Himiko Bate:
When you first met Himiko, she was an awkward girl whose quirk impaired her reasoning abilities, leaving her borderline neurotic. Despite your fears, you stayed friends with Himiko, even offering to let Himiko partake in your blood to sate her quirk's desire to feed. With the help of you and Horie, you could change Himiko over time. Eventually, you confessed your feelings for each other and became a couple. After that, Himiko rapidly improved during your high school years, arguably a completely different person than who you imagine she could have become if you never met her. That became literal when a few chance encounters and decisions led Himiko to become the daughter of Cathleen Bate, both on paper and biologically. Himiko absolutely adores you, though she does not know her purpose outside of being with you. While Himiko is on her way to becoming a great hero, she still has a lot of growing up to do.
Ryukyu Tatsuma:
Due to your father's encouragement, you sought mentorship among the upperclassmen. Ryukyu and you became very close during her time at Yuuei. She started to think of you as a little sister, hence offering you her quirk, but that backfired tremendously. Due to being in emotional turmoil from your unanticipated draconic transformation, Yu convinced you to push Ryukyu out of your life. She doesn't blame you for your decision, and missing you greatly, while wanting to make up for her mistake, has offered you an internship. You've yet to take Ryukyu up on her offer to reconnect, and she's starting to lose hope that you'll ever want to do so.
Rumi Usagiyama:
As Ruykyu's best friend, she is incredibly protective of the dragon quirk-user. She is quite bitter and sees your decision to stick with Yu and abandon Ryukyu only for the pain you inflicted on her best friend. She does not approve of your two reconnecting but has made no effort to actually stop you from doing so, seeing it as Ryukyu's choice. Should you reconnect with Ryukyu, though, expect to get some pushback from Rumi. Needless to say, you won't be interning with her anytime soon.
Yu Takeyama:
Always jealous of her upperclassmen and lacking context for your transformation, she manipulated you into picking her over Ryukyu. After this, the development and maturity that would be expected of a pro-hero like Yu to go through during hero academia escaped her. After graduating, Yu's mentality had been corrupted. While she still wants to be a good person and participate in hero work, she cares far more about her image and popularity. As for her future… a lot of that depends on how her relationship with you develops, and if you can be a better influence for Yu, then Yu is on you.
Natsumi Okumura:
Despite being quirkless, Natsumi ran for Student Council Representative. After meeting you, the two of you became quick friends. Natsumi greatly respects you, knowing she could not have become the Student Council Vice-President and Acting President during your stay in the United States without your assistance. While she's pretty shy and doesn't plan on becoming a hero for obvious reasons, she cares greatly for you.
Sayaka Tamaki:
Sayaka knows who she is and what she wants. One of those things is inserting herself into your relationship with Himiko because a threesome sounds fucking hawt, but she's okay with you being one of her bitches (aka, best friends). You're not entirely sure what Sayaka's future is. One day, she jokes about going to the Olympics, and the next, she's thinking of being a cam girl. Still, you doubt that will change your friendship with the pink-head.
Melissa Shields:
You have known Melissa since your days in the orphanage, and at one point, she convinced her dad to adopt you, not that it ever went through. Despite that, you have stayed in touch over the years. It is because of Melissa that you decided to head to the United States, making the most of your time together. You became like sisters during your stay, getting a glimpse into what your life would be like if you had allowed David Shields to adopt you. Due to your time together, Melissa has decided to attend Yuuei Academy's support course, planning to transfer out of I-Island after the first semester.
Pony Tsunotori:
The horse girl was initially very interested in you solely because you were Japanese, wanting someone else to nerd out with about classic anime and manga. While you turned out not to be all that interested in that stuff, this didn't prevent Pony and you from becoming good friends. While you didn't join Cow Lady's section at Central Park Hero Camp, Pony still dreams of going to Yuuei. You doubt this is the last you'll see of Pony, but there is a lingering question of how your friendship will continue to develop.
Miles Parker:
Out of your entire friend group, you've arguably gotten to know him the least. You know that before you arrived, Miles was a candidate for valedictorian, yet now he isn't even attending college. If Julius' words are anything to go by, then Miles might be supplying support equipment to vigilantes, if not becoming one himself. While you're worried about him, there's not much you can do about it.
Gary Markus:
The son of America's #2 hero, Gary's biggest troubles have come in the form of his love life. Luckily, after meeting you, Gary got some much-needed advice, leaving his ex-girlfriend Ember for her best friend, Ava. He seems much happier than he was and is still dedicated to becoming a professional hero alongside Ava. As for your friendship, you hope to maintain it and are a bit disappointed that he didn't come to Yuuei, even if the decision was made before Ember dropped out of the hero program. Time will tell if you can convince him and Ava to change their minds, especially with you being close.
Jason Thomas:
While he was initially the leader of his friend group, he went on a bit of a downward spiral after the I-Island incident, where he arguably threw away his dreams because of his impulsiveness. He doesn't blame you for that and appreciates your efforts to protect him and Rae, even if they were ineffective. Luckily, during the summer, Jason cleaned up his act and earned a second chance to qualify for the Morphers. While it will be a tough road, he's ready to redeem himself.
Rae Robbins:
The goth very much agreed with your strategic call during the I-Island incident and began to respect you immensely after that. Your friendship was further deepened due to your efforts to protect her from ending up on probation. Rae eventually came to you about her plans now that she was forced to take a year off, asking for advice. You advised her to go on a spiritual journey. The last you heard, Julius was able to help convince her to do so. You're expecting her to reach out to her while she journeys around the globe.
Julius LeRouge:
The most mysterious of your high school friends, Julius has made it very clear that he thinks of you as such. You arguably don't know all that much about Julius, if you're being honest, other than his being a lot more involved in his friends' lives than you would have first thought. He is very much looking forward to the next time that you two can talk, assuming there ever is a time.
Ralphie Michelona:
Unlike the rest of your fellow juniors, due to Ralphie's involvement in the I-Island incident and your actively throwing Ralphie under the bus, his dreams of being a pro-hero have been crushed. He resents you greatly, and you have a sneaking suspicion that the next time that you meet, should there be a next time, it will be a fight.
Devin S. Evans, Manny Shade, Marianne Adrestian, and Lee Davidson:
While you attended class with all of them and some of them even joined you at the Central Park Hero Camp, you never went out of your way to spend any time with them. You aren't on bad terms with them, but you wouldn't say that you know them either. They were your classmates and nothing more, even if they were closer to Pony.
Clair Voyance:
The woman holds no ill will toward you for not picking her section during the Central Park Hero Camp. While she would have taught you what she could, Clair respects your decision. The only reason she was busy and so pushy was because she had to for the sake of making an appearance.
Endeavor:
First, you turned down the opportunity to be his daughter. Now, you turned down the first of a few attempts to make you Shoto's wife. It's clear that he only sees you as someone for whom to marry Shoto. Continue down this path carefully; otherwise, you might find yourself with a powerful enemy.
Cathleen Bate:
Cathy was initially impressed by how you handled yourself during the I-Island incident and how you protected your friends while still sounding reasonable. Knowing your heritage, Cathy took an interest in you, which she acted upon during the Central Park Hero Camp. She didn't expect how close she would later become to Himiko, seeing her as a pseudo-daughter. Eventually, due to the nature of Himiko's quirk, Himiko became Cathy's actual daughter. Now a true mama bear, Cathay is incredibly thankful to you for bringing her the best thing in her life.
Chapter 14 (Who Is Your Favorite of the Senior Class?):
By picking Jason, he would've begun to give you proper lessons in martial arts, increasing your strength and technique by .5 points each.
You don't get a stat boost by picking Rae like with Jason. Still, you would have the opportunity to transfer Rae to Yuuei automatically (you ironically unlocked this option later on).
By picking Julius, you would get a .5 intelligence boost. You would have also opened up some exciting options that you only got a small glimpse into the mystery of during the actual arc. Perhaps you'll learn more by returning to the United States later.
By picking Miles, you would've outright learned about his vigilante activities instead of them being revealed to you by Julius. This would have allowed you to intervene, potentially saving Miles from his current path.
Ironically, by picking Gary, you learn more about his situation with Ava and Ember and intervene. However, picking this was the only way to get Gary into U.A., unlike with Rae (if you got him in or not… you'll find out).
Chapter 15 (I-Island Incident)
If you fight the Midsummer Knights' Dream alone, Jason gets injured, and you discover Miles' vigilantism. You'd later be questioned by Star & Stripes, where you could rat Miles out. If you keep silent, then this goes on your record, and you will be forced to take the normal entrance exam. However, Miles could be convinced to enroll at U.A. Rating Miles out gets you kicked out of the friend group, but it does not go on your record. In either case, Star & Stripes would not allow you to be in her section.
In the group version, Jason doesn't get injured and takes the fall for the group. This means Jason doesn't become a Ranger at all, but it doesn't go on anyone else's record. Unfortunately, this means Jason joins the Midsummer Knights' Dream. Depending on your handling of Star & Stripes, you still might get in her section, but the odds are very low.
Picking to have the group help you evacuate would lead to too many chefs being in the kitchen. You'd still do some good work, and nobody from the senior class would get in trouble though, since they'd be able to convince Jason not to do something stupid.
As you saw with your decision, Kazuha is able to use her mental stats to take control of the situation, and when the heroes and media arrive on scene, she's shown to be doing a good job, in a way that's perfectly legal. You end up getting a +.5 to your charisma stat, and Stars and Stripes takes an interest in Kazuha moving forward, if you choose to pursue that path, where the only way to lose S&S as an option in hero camp is to actively screw up the interview.
Should you have gone looking for Miles and Julius as a group, you end up getting some suspicions about Julius and what he's up to, but you legit need to get bailed out by Arachnid when you get caught by Naught and the Knights. It gives you some robust information to act on at the cost of not impressing Star & Stripe.
Should you have gone looking for Milies and Julius alone, then you would have learned this information but been taken hostage in the process, this time by Naught. This could've led to multiple bad scenarios, including an early villain route, depending on how your interrogation by Naught went. So, thank you for not stumbling into this.
Heading to the Central Tower was an idiotic decision that would have cost you dearly. Heading along with Melissa would've led to both of you getting captured by Naught's men rather than the man himself. This would have effectively been the trauma route and led to the fic getting booted up to an instant M rating, as you would have to choose between David's life (and Melissa getting paralyzed) and Kaz making a sacrifice of her personal dignity.
Going as a group to the Central Tower leads to Jason being killed by the Midsummer Knights' Dream, getting shot, and falling out the window. In either case, you would never attend Hero Camp, and the arc would come to a premature ending. If you got David killed, Melissa would come back with you, though mostly because she's an orphan and cripple. It's not very fun.
Looking for the junior class alone would've ironically had Melissa, Pony, and Himiko all accompany you. This would have repaired your bond with Horie due to her safety being Kaz's priority, and you'd have a choice that could've increased your bond with some of the junior classmen or gotten them hurt.
Taking the whole group would have avoided the danger due to the extra hands. However, this leads to Jason going off alone, and he joins the Knights much like if you picked A, though being a lot more resentful of Kazuha.
Chapter 16 (How Should Kazuha Respond to Star and Stripes?)
As you saw, Cathy doesn't fully agree with the vigilante rules and that they sometimes need to be stretched in cases of emergencies. There are a lot of combos, and they all do different things, but the general idea is that depending on your answers, you could lose out on being Star and Stripes' student during training camp.
There are so many options, including the customs, so I'll simply refer to the spoiler thread in the server, or I can answer this in the comments section of the chapter.
Overall, as you saw, you did a good job, though at the risk of ruining Ralphie's life, pushing him down the path of becoming a villain.
Chapter 17A (What Should Rae Do?):
Attempting hero camp leads to her joining Clair Voyance's section. You'd have to join that section to bunk with Rae and potentially get her to come to U.A. Otherwise, she doesn't really grow as a person. Her fate is pretty up in the air. She could still join Julius, though more willingly this time. Or she has a few other paths, including a non-powered path, where she simply takes over the library.
Picking for Rae to go on a spiritual journey has Julius be the only one to meet Rae at the airport to see her off. This conversation has some implications for Rae's development, as you'll find out later when she comes to visit during the Winter Break, and may apply to U.A., though she'd be forced to start in the general course.
Picking to have Rae take Julius up on his offer leads to Rae becoming a tragic villain in the long run. Initially, Julius does in fact give Rae a secretary position wanting to keep her close. But Rae starts putting the pieces together about who he is by being so close to Julius. She feels like she owes Julius and she's worried that if she ratted him out, it would make her probation worse. This would eventually lead to a spiral of poor decisions by both parties where they start dating which leads Rae down the wrong path, becoming part of the Midsummer Knights' Dream. If you wanted to avoid her villainy, you would've had to come back to the States during your Winter break.
Chapter 17B (What Should Gary Do?):
Getting back together with Ember would have worked for about a year and a half, but it would have eventually fallen apart again due to Ember being a hothead. By this point, any connection between Gary and Ava would have fizzled out, and Ava wouldn't risk her friendship with Ember by dating Gary. This seals off the transfer to U.A. Gary would become a very brutal hero, mirroring his father.
Going with B, as you picked, was a lot healthier for Gary. He and Ava would become a strong hero couple and bond quickly. Omnipotent is happy since Ava is a powerful quirk-user. Because of how serious he is about Ava, he doesn't ever consider transferring, Gary is happier and less brutal, but you'll only see him if you return to America. Perhaps you could convince him to transfer at that point, but you'd have to also persuade Ava.
The last two options are basically the same thing. Picking to stay single would've led to Gary transferring to U.A. early, mostly to get out of his awkward rooming situation with Ava. He may or may not have gotten with Ava based on your choices since the drama with Ember didn't cause Ava and Gary to fizzle out entirely. Like, the door is still open, just more complicated. If you fake-dated Gary, then he would've developed feelings for Kazuha. He'd be a love-sick puppy and lose his chance to date Ava. You would have to decide what to do with it, especially with Himiko kinda... naive about it all.
Chapter 18 (Whose Section Do You Join?)
In short, in any section, being a C.I.T. means that you not only get additional stat points but could get the teacher's quirk. To join Star & Stripes, you had to be a counselor in training.
For Cow Lady, the boosts would be in strength, dexterity, and constitution. You could've also helped Pony evolve her quirk much sooner, developing the transformation component of her quirk, a massive power boost. The school will be more focused on improving her existing quirk factor rather than her innate one, so you'll have to put in the work later yourself to help Pony. You could've also gotten your first quirk mutation, developing the Chimera quirk.
Due to all your choices, Melissa didn't attend the Central Park Hero Camp. As such, you lost the ability to be Elecplant's C.I.T. His boosts were in special and intelligence, but you'd also have an okay understanding of support gear. This was your last chance to pursue support gear, making it harder to pursue Mei as a friend.
Picking Clair Voyance leads to boosts in technique, dexterity, and charisma. You'd also get firearms training. Shoto would've joined the camp. Clair Voyance would have also liked you more.
If Himiko had gone with Clair Voyance, then Himiko's social would have gone up by +3, her skill and promiscuity by +1, and her morality would have gone down by -1, and her independence by -2. She would've developed into a hero a lot closer to canon, just with proper training.
You kinda saw the impacts of picking Star & Stripe for both, which will be discussed below anyway.
Chapter 19 (What Quirks Do You Want To Upgrade?):
This one is pretty simple. You get a level up in any quirks you choose to upgrade. Pretty self-explanatory. Himiko joining you does not actually change anything for this choice but did push Himiko down the path of becoming Cathy's daughter.
Chapter 20 (What Should Kazuha Say To Himiko?):
Saying "You Shouldn't Change Your Name Or Your DNA. You're Amazing The Way You Are" would have had Kazuha tell Himiko she's perfect. Himiko loses trust in herself, thinking she almost did something stupid, resulting in a -1 independence.
Saying "You Can Change Your Name, But Don't Change Your DNA. I Don't Want To Risk You Losing Your Quirk" would have led Himiko to get confused, so she asks Kazuha to dive deeper. This would establish that Kaz cares about quirks and makes Himiko think as such. This leads to Himiko seeing strength as important and taking a -1 morality. Cathy will appreciate the gesture, but it's not... all that impressive to her. She sees it as Himiko being quirky, ironically.
Saying "You Can Change Your DNA, But Keep Your Name. Because You'll Always Be Himiko To Me," would have Himiko take Cathy's blood and perform the permanent transformation that turns her genetically into something equivalent to a daughter. Due to Himiko's canon quirk evolution, which allows her to use the quirks of the people she loves, Himiko would evolve to be able to use New Order. This leads to a +1 skill and +1 happiness. This also may put Cathy in a position of early retirement.
Saying "Follow Your Heart. If You Want To Change Both, You Don't Need My Permission" would have followed the same path as C but led to a +1 independence with Himiko as well. This path makes Cathy feel more responsible for Himiko and hence gives Himiko an ultimatum. While if Himiko keeps her name, she would accept the limits on New Order, if you change Himiko's name, she would instead enroll in the military academy, leading to your relationship becoming long distance.
