Giles had capitulated to the teens arguments and allowed Buffy to tell her mother. Principal Flutie had even offered to help by calling and arranging a meeting at the school and revealing his own dual nature to Joyce Summers. Once she calmed down she had a million questions, which everyone patiently answered. Wesen and Grimms, Slayers and vampires. The world wasn't at all what Joyce had believed it was. But it was watching a sparing match between Buffy and Xander that ultimately convinced her. They were astonishingly fast and hit hard and yet hardly seemed injured.
"Both Grimms and Slayers heal much faster than a normal human." Xander told her. "We can also continue fighting even when seriously injured, because we can block pain. We survive injuries that would kill a normal human and our base abilities are the same, instinctive knowledge, enhanced strength and speed. Buffy has some abilities that I don't, such as prophetic dreams. As a Grimm, I can see the demon that animates a dead body making a vampire. Both of us can sense them, but Buffy 'sees' them with her mind, rather than her eyes. All of us, normal humans, Wesen, Grimms and Slayers have existed along side of each other for thousands of years. The world isn't what you thought it was and I'm sorry that in order for you to be safe, you need to know that. There's no where in the world where vampires aren't, but Sunnydale is a place where you're going to find larger numbers of them."
That was last week and Joyce was slowly adjusting to the change in her worldview. Her mom instincts went into overdrive when she learned that before coming to Sunnydale and meeting Xander and his friends, Buffy had pretty much been alone trying to deal with it. Just an old guy who thought he could give her little girl orders! And another guy now thought that he could give her orders.
"You have knowledge that can help my little girl deal with the things it seems she has no choice but to deal with, given she's some kind of magnetic for these things and we live in a town that's also a magnet, but you do not give her orders! Ever! She is not your Slayer, she's my daughter!" Oh the anger of a mother on the warpath.
Anyway, that was last week, this week Giles was fuming over the fact that the school had decided that the library books needed to be catalogued on a computer and the computer teacher, Jenny Calendar, along with Johnathan, was currently working on the project.
"You really have a thing against technology, don't you, English?" Ms. Calendar teased him as Xander and Cordelia entered the library. Johnathan had taken over tutoring Xander in math after Willow's death and it being their free period had come looking for him. They were about to sit down when Xander cocked his head to the side and looked confused for a moment. Than he picked up a large, old book.
"Giles, can I talk to you in your office?"
"Certainly, anything to get away from that infernal machine." Giles glared at the computer and ignored Ms. Calendar's grin and followed Xander into his office.
"Giles, I've never seen anything like this or even heard of anything like this." Xander thrust the book at him.
"It's one of the reference books the Council recently sent me. Actually, thank you for catching it, it isn't part of the library inventory and shouldn't have been in the pile anyway."
"Giles, there's a demon In that book!" Xander exclaimed. "You know one of my abilities is to see the demon, which looks like something dark, in a vampire. I can see something dark in that book and it reminds me of what I see in a vampire."
"You're certain?"
"Yes. Like I said, I've never seen or heard of anything like this, but I am certain I'm seeing something dark in that book. How can a demon be in a book, Giles?!"
"In medieval times, religious orders sometime trapped demons in books, it's entirely possible this is one such book."
"Why keep it around? Why not destroy it after trapping the demon?"
"Destroy a book?" Giles looked confused, like such a thing had never occured to him.
"A book with a demon in it! Can we burn it? Would that destroy the demon or release it?"
"The only way to release it, is to read it, so I suppose burning it would destroy the demon with it. Are you certain there's a demon in it?"
"Buffy can sense demons too, Giles. If you need confirmation, have her or my Uncle Rory take a good hard look at that book. I know what I'm seeing."
"Alright, I'll have Buffy check it and if she also is aware of this demon, we can destroy it." He looked pained at the idea of destroying a book, even if it did have a demon in it, which Buffy confirmed after getting a look at it herself.
"It's wiggy, Giles. What do we do about it?"
"I suggest a bonfire and s'mores." The bottomless pit known as a teenage boy named Jesse suggested when he heard about it. The rest decided it was a good idea and Joyce agreed to let them have it in the fire pit in her back yard.
"That's the easiest fight against the forces of darkness I've ever had." Buffy announced as she enjoyed her own s'mores. The rest of the teens were in agreement.
