"With the first overall pick, the New Jersey Devils proudly select from the U.S program...Isaac Hargrave!"
The announcement reverberated through the Prudential Center, igniting a deafening roar of applause from the crowd. Cameras panned swiftly to capture the moment of jubilation as Isaac, overcome with emotion, rose from his seat, his eyes glistening with tears of joy. He embraced his family tightly, exchanging excited whispers with his girlfriend before making his way toward the stage.
With a grin stretching from ear to ear, he made his way towards the stage, his heart pounding with exhilaration. Each step felt like a surreal dream as he approached the team's representatives, shaking hands and exchanging pleasantries amidst the deafening cheers of the crowd. With pride swelling in his chest, he donned the team's jersey, the iconic emblem gleaming under the bright lights of the arena.
The photographers' cameras flashed relentlessly, capturing the defining moment of Isaac's career as he posed proudly for the snapshots that would immortalize this milestone.
Amidst the cheers and applause, the commentator's voice reverberated once more,"What a moment for Isaac Hargrave, and what a moment for the New Jersey Devils! For those who don't know, there's a special connection here that makes this pick even more meaningful. Isaac, the son of former Devils player Jacob Hargrave, follows in his father's footsteps as he joins the Devils organization."
The applause swelled to a crescendo as a photo of Jacob Hargrave, adorned in his Devils uniform, flashed on the jumbotron beside Isaac. It was a poignant reminder of the legacy that he now carried on, a legacy of passion, dedication, and unwavering determination.
"Jacob Hargrave was a beloved figure in New Jersey hockey history, and now his legacy lives on as his son embarks on his own journey with the Devils," the commentator continued, his words punctuated by the resounding cheers of the crowd.
He lifted his head to look at the jumbotron, his heart swelling with pride and gratitude as he locked his eyes upon the image of his father. In that moment, a flood of emotions washed over him, gratitude, pride, and a profound sense of purpose intertwining within him. With a raised fist, he acknowledged the crowd, the thunderous applause enveloping him like a warm embrace.
"I've made it," he whispered to himself, his voice barely audible over the roar of the crowd. "We've made it, Dad."
With a final wave to the cheering fans, Isaac exited the stage, his heart brimming with excitement and anticipation as he prepared to speak with the eager journalists awaiting his words.
As the echoes of Isaac's selection began to fade, a palpable sense of anticipation lingered in the air, the audience holding their breath as the Devils' representative stepped up to the podium once again.
"With the second selection, the New Jersey Devils are proud to select from the U.S Program... Jayden Hayes!"
The announcement electrified the crowd, and all eyes turned towards Jayden, who was already on his feet, his face illuminated with a radiant smile as he exchanged jubilant embraces with his family and shared a tender kiss with his girlfriend. With boundless enthusiasm, he dashed towards the stage, his steps buoyed by the cheers of the crowd.
Suddenly, he found himself tackled to the ground, laughter bubbling from his lips as he looked up to see his best friend enveloping him in a tight hug and grinning down at him. The audience erupted into laughter and applause at their playful antics, relishing the genuine camaraderie between the two friends.
After a moment, Isaac helped him to his feet, offering a supportive pat on the back before returning to his seat, his eyes shimmering with pride and excitement for his friend. Jayden ascended the stage, the stadium vibrating with energy as he shook hands with the team's representatives and proudly donned the Devils' jersey. Flashbulbs popped incessantly as he posed for photographs, his grin widening with each click of the camera.
"It seems that tonight is all about legacies, ladies and gentlemen," the commentator remarked, his voice filled with admiration. "Alexander Hayes must be beaming with pride right now, seeing his son carry on the family tradition with the Devils alongside his best friend, Isaac Hargrave."
The camera zoomed in on Alec Hayes in the audience, his eyes shining with pride as he cheered, "That's my boy!" Meanwhile, Bailey wiped away tears of joy as she captured the moment on her phone, her heart overflowing with pride for her son.
"It's a special moment for hockey fans in New Jersey and beyond." the commentator remarked, his voice tinged with emotion. "Look out, because it looks like we're looking at another Hargrave-Hayes duo in the making."
Alec observed his godson with a mixture of pride and nostalgia, his heart swelling with affection as he watched him tenderly admire the picture of his father. With careful steps, he approached from behind, not wanting to disturb the tranquility of the moment, and peered over Isaac's shoulder to catch a glimpse of the image etched in his memory—a snapshot of Jacob and himself after their first triumphant Stanley Cup win with the Devils.
"It was your father's most nerve-wracking game," he began, his voice tinged with fond reminiscence, causing his godson to turn and meet his gaze. "The doctor had warned your parents that you could arrive at any moment, and your father was on the brink of sitting out, fearing that your mother might go into labor. But your mother insisted, and he ultimately took to the ice, his eyes constantly flickering to her, vigilant for any sign of discomfort or pain. And well... you made your grand entrance into the world 23 days later."
Isaac regarded him with a mixture of vulnerability and hope. "Are you proud of me?" he asked, his voice soft and tentative. "Everyone says my father would be, and I know Mom is, but you... you're the closest thing I have to my father besides Dad. You knew him best, and you played alongside him. You were like Jay and me. Brothers."
Alec's eyes glistened with unshed tears, the profound resemblance between Isaac and Jacob tugging at his heartstrings. "I'm more than proud of you, Isaac," he replied, his voice thick with emotion. "You can't begin to fathom how much. It's not just because you're my godson or my best son's son. I'm proud of you," he continued, gently tapping his finger against the spot where the boy's heart lay, "Of that boy who spent endless hours on the ice at twelve, for the young man who, despite life's challenges, always wears a smile, for the generosity and kindness that have made dreams come true for your friends. I'm proud that you've found something in life that ignites your passion, something you love with every fiber of your being. But above all, I'm proud that you've found someone to share it all with."
"You're blessed to have a woman like Quinn by your side," he continued, his voice filled with conviction. "Having it all means nothing if you have no one to share it with. So yes, Isaac, I'm proud of you."
"I'm going to marry her. I've already spoken to Russel and Judy, Mom, Dad, and Aunt Bailey."
"You told my wife before me, your own godfather?"
"Aunt Bailey was there the day I showed her the ring," Isaac shrugged nonchalantly before his smile widened, his gaze drifting fondly towards his girlfriend, who was engaged in conversation with her sister and mother. "What do you think of her?"
"I'll tell you the same thing I told your father when he shared his plans to marry Sophia," Alec began, placing a hand on his godson's shoulder. "You're one lucky bastard. Quinn is a remarkable and intelligent young woman. You complement each other perfectly and are always there for each other. You two remind me so much of your parents."
Isaac's grin widened even further at the heartfelt compliment, his eyes shimmering with happiness. His laughter bubbled up when Jayden motioned for them to take a photo together, and he dashed off towards his best friend. Alec watched him go, a sense of pride swelling within him.
"Look at them, Jacob. Our boys will be playing for the Devils just as we dreamed. They're destined for stardom, mark my words. Another Hargrave-Hayes duo, leaving their mark on hockey history."
With a bittersweet smile, he ran a hand over Jacob's image, his expression tinged with longing. "I miss you, Wolf. I think I always will," he murmured softly, his voice filled with emotion. "You have no idea what I would give to play one more game with you. We had quite the ride, didn't we? You and me, man. Until we meet again."
"Do you think Isaac is going to ask me to marry him?"
The atmosphere around the table shifted subtly, a mix of surprise and knowing glances exchanged among the girls. They were all aware of Isaac's intentions, especially since he had already purchased the ring several months prior.
Santana, with a wry smile playing on her lips, was the first to answer. "But I thought you weren't eager to get married right away," she remarked, her tone laced with a hint of amusement. "I mean, you were the one who vehemently opposed Hudson and Berry's wedding less than a year ago, arguing that they weren't mature enough to make that decision."
"And you haven't even finished your first year of uni. Isaac and Jay are swamped with training," Gabrielle chimed in, her smile gentle yet knowing. "Have you discussed this with my brother?"
"Yeah, I did," Quinn lamented, a hint of frustration evident in her voice as she took a sip of her coffee. "But that was ages ago. Things are different now."
Brittany chuckled softly, her blue eyes sparkling with amusement. "Didn't you once say that modern women find themselves at 30?" she teased gently. "Why the hurry, Quinnie?"
"I don't want to wait until I'm fucking 30 to marry him." she protested, her lips forming a pout. "I'm 19, for crying out loud. And besides, I got him two tickets to see Taylor Swift for his birthday, hoping that when she sang 'he knelt to the ground and pulled a ring' I was convinced he was going to kneel. The man adores Taylor. Why can't he take a hint?"
Suddenly, Charlotte burst into laughter, her amusement bubbling over as she looked at her friend. "You're so want to have his babies before you graduate," she chuckled, her laughter infectious. "That's what all this bloody fuss is about, isn't it? You don't give a fuck about the wedding; you just want him to give you a little Hargrave baby."
Quinn's cheeks flushed a deeper shade of red as she shifted uncomfortably in her seat, her arms crossing defensively over her chest. "You can't blame me. We've been together for almost three years, and every time I see him goofing around with Kyle, I get baby fever. It's... maddening. It's like my brain can't focus on anything else. I should be paying attention in class, focusing on graduating, but all I can think about is when my incredibly handsome but oblivious boyfriend is going to pop the question and give me a baby."
Emily offered a comforting smile, her eyes warm with understanding. "It's not pathetic, Quinn. Wanting to start a family is a natural desire, no matter your age. And knowing you, you'd find a way to balance it all perfectly."
"How's Kyle adjusting to New York?" Brittany inquired, her curiosity piqued as she had a soft spot for the young boy.
"He's doing well, overall. Still settling into the rhythm of life here, but he's enjoying it. When he's not in class, he's practically living at the ice rink."
"Who does he remind me of?" Santana teased, nudging her best friend playfully.
Emily interjected, drawing their attention back to the topic at hand. "Actually, Kyle has been spending a lot of time with his 'father' and 'uncle' lately." She emphasized the words with air quotes.
"Wait, Kyle calls Isaac 'dad'? And that doesn't bother you?"
"Although he knows that Isaac isn't his biological father, he's the closest thing he has to one," Quinn explained calmly, maintaining her composure amidst Santana's questioning gaze. "It's endearing to see Kyle call him 'dad.' Besides, you've seen them together. They genuinely look like father and son."
Emily chuckled as she retrieved her phone to share the amusing incident. "Remember when we used to have 'take your dad to school' day? Well, Kyle proudly introduced Isaac as his father to the whole class." The pictures depicted both of them standing together, beaming with pride amidst a sea of curious faces. "It was unexpected, to say the least. But ever since that day, the other kids have stopped teasing Kyle about not having a father."
"If some snotty brat so much as touches Kyle's hair they're going to meet Snixx. I'm from Lima Height Adjacent and, do you know what happens there? Cosas malas"
"Santana, your house is practically a stone's throw from mine. But I get it. I used to be the HBIC and Head Cheerleader back in the day. Those kids won't know what hit them if they mess with Kyle again."
"Okay, okay," Brittany interjected, clapping her hands together to diffuse the tension. "Stop the violence. We're mature, sensible young women, not wild brutes."
"You think Ellie is expecting a ring from me?" Jayden's question caught him off guard, prompting him to turn and glance at his best friend before returning his gaze to where Kyle was skating.
"Why do you say that? Has she mentioned anything to you or dropped any hints?"
"She just seemed so thrilled when you showed us the ring you got for Quinn. Plus, I know for a fact she's got a Pinterest board filled with wedding stuff," his friend explained, his tone tinged with a hint of awkwardness as he scratched the back of his neck.
"I highly doubt Ellie's expecting a ring right now. I mean, what girl hasn't fantasized about her dream wedding at some point? Quinn had a whole scrapbook dedicated to her Prom vision, and I wouldn't be surprised if she's got a Pinterest board outlining every detail of our future wedding, from the venue to the flower arrangements. All I have to do is kneel down, ask her, and say yes to everything except divorce."
"Jay, we're still young," Isaac continued, his tone turning more serious. "As much as I plan to propose to her this summer, it doesn't mean we're getting married right away. Planning a wedding takes a lot of time and effort."
"Well, you did crash the last wedding," Jayden remarked with a smirk, "Quite literally."
They both laughed until they heard the sound of Kyle falling. They exchanged concerned glances before hurrying over to the boy, who was just picking himself up from the ground.
"Kyle, are you okay?" Isaac knelt down beside him, quickly checking for any signs of injury. "Does anything hurt?"
Before the boy could respond, their attention was diverted by an angry voice. Turning towards the source, they saw a red-haired girl holding her head, glaring at Kyle with frustration evident on her face.
"Didn't you see where you're going, berk?" she snapped, her words cutting through the air like a knife.
Kyle's cheeks flushed with embarrassment and a hint of anger as he faced the girl. "What did you just call me?" he retorted, his tone defensive.
"Berk. And apparently deaf too, since you didn't hear me the first time. If you don't know how to skate, it's not my fault."
"Take that back. I do know how to skate."
The red-haired girl rolled her eyes, a smirk playing on her lips. "Clearly not, considering you just bumped into me."
"I already apologized." she retorted, her tone dripping with mockery.
Isaac and Jayden exchanged surprised glances, finding themselves caught between amusement and disbelief as they watched the exchange unfold. It was evident that the girl took pleasure in making Kyle squirm.
"Okay, guys," Jayden interjected, stepping forward with a grin, "how about we shake hands and then treat ourselves to some hot chocolate?"
The red-haired girl's eyes widened in disbelief as she looked at him, her mouth hanging open in astonishment. "You're Jayden Hayes!" she exclaimed, her voice filled with excitement. Then, her gaze shifted to Isaac, and her expression grew even more animated. "And you're Isaac Hargrave! Oh my gosh! I'm a huge Devils fan."
They chucked at the girl's reaction, charmed by her enthusiasm. "He's my dad, you know?" Kyle piped up smugly, "And Jayden's my uncle."
The girl blinked in surprise, her eyes darting back and forth between Isaac and Kyle, a mixture of awe and admiration coloring her features. A blush crept onto her cheeks as she gathered her courage. "Um, would you... would you mind signing my jersey?" she asked timidly, holding up the fabric for them to see.
Isaac noticed the Devils jersey she was wearing and nodded in agreement. "Sure thing. I don't have a marker on me, but I'm sure the one at the chocolate stand does. Why don't you go ask her? Kyle, why don't you go with her and pay for two cups of hot chocolate?" He handed Kyle a ten-dollar bill, encouraging him gently.
"Do I have to?" Kyle protested half-heartedly, his pride still stinging from the encounter."She bumped into me, not the other way around."
"You're going to do it because you're a gentleman. "Besides, diamonds and chocolate are a girl's best friends. Since you're too young for diamonds and your mom would probably kill me, we'll settle for hot chocolate."
Jayden chimed in with a grin, adding his own wisdom, "And besides, remember what they always say. Women are always right. If she says you bumped into her, you bumped into her. It's a losing battle, buddy. Best to accept it early on."
Kyle reluctantly made his way towards the chocolate stand, where the red-haired girl was waiting impatiently. Isaac and Jayden observed from a distance, chuckling at the continued banter between the two before they were handed their chocolates. The girl seemed to have a fiery spirit, matched only by Kyle's own stubbornness. To their surprise, the girl leaned in and planted a quick kiss on Kyle's cheek, causing his face to turn a deep shade of red.
"Look at them, Kyle's already got his first girlfriend, and it's all thanks to the Hargrave charm. I can't wait to see Emily's reaction when I tell her, especially the part where you suggested buying diamonds."
"You're not going to say shit to Emily, or I'll tell Ellie that you think women are always right, even when they're not." Isaac warned, a playful glint in his eyes as they continued to watch Kyle approach them, a bright smile on his face. "Everything okay?"
"I think I'm in love,"
Jayden raised an eyebrow in amusement. "Is that so?" he replied, his voice laced with amusement as he tousled Kyle's hair affectionately.
"Her name's Ava."
"Where is she?" Isaac inquired, gesturing towards the ice rink. "She wanted us to sign her jersey, didn't she?"
Kyle's expression fell slightly. "She had to leave," he explained with a hint of disappointment, "but we're meeting up next week." He looked up at Isaac, his eyes pleading. "Can we come, Dad?"
"Of course, buddy. We'll make sure to bring her flowers."
