Written for the prompt: "The sound of laughter drifted up from the street below, making him feel very alone in this new town."
Far from Family and Friends
James Sirius Potter felt incredibly lonely.
With his education at Hogwarts finished, and the start of his trainee time as an A1 Auror he had made the decision and finally moved out of Grimmauld Place.
Things hadn't been easy so far, since he bought a flat in Manchester to be closer to his Girlfriend, Imelda Rosier, a fellow Witch from Hogwarts, who had also inscribed as an Auror Trainee.
But their plan hadn't come to fruition yet, and with their long but different training hours, they barely had time to see each other.
This resulted in James spending most of his downtime alone in his flat, far away from friends and family. Of course, he was always just one Floo or apparition away, but he felt like he needed to stand on his own two feet for a while.
That was the reason why he forbade his parents to check by unannounced for the next six months, to the big dismay of both of them. As much as it hurt him, he needed it, he wanted it, and he wanted to show that he wasn't a helpless boy anymore, perfectly capable of standing on his own two feet.
But now it was Friday evening, he had come home from his weekly Obstacle course run a good two hours ago, after which he had showered and grabbed a good book, of which he was now mindlessly flicking through the pages, not taking in a single written word.
He sighed as he put down the book on defensive dark magic, turning in his armchair and letting his eyes travel out the window and down the street.
The sun had just disappeared behind a row of Victorian buildings, as dusk bathed the inner city of Manchester in a pleasant orange tinge.
The sound of laughter drifted up from the street below, making him feel very alone in this new town, emptiness now spreading inside him. He missed his girlfriend, but she would be at the academy until late at night since her training was under another department.
Sometimes he was unsure if anyone thought of him out here, or if they had just forgotten about him.
No! He told himself. He couldn't let thoughts like that consume him, he knew it wasn't the case, and his family and friends missed him just as much as he missed them. They loved him, and he loved them.
James took a long swig of the water next to him, feeling better as the cool liquid ran down his throat.
He was about to pick back up his book when he heard a whoosh from his left.
He spun around in his armchair, his eyes widening as a red-haired woman stumbled out of the fireplace, well, not any woman, but his mum.
"Jamie I am so sorry, I know you said you didn't want us… UMPF"
Was all she managed to say, as James had flung himself from the chair, closing the distance between them in the blink of an eye, simply throwing his arms around her, as they crashed into each other.
"I missed you mum… So much!" He smelt her familiar calming scent as he burrowed his head in the crook of her neck. Feeling himself slowly relax as all the worries and insecurities faded from his mind.
He felt Ginny squeeze harder, her voice soft and loving.
"Oh Jamie, we miss you so much, we are so worried about you."
She pulled back for a second, her brown eyes so much like his own staring at him with motherly worry, before she simply leaned in kissing his cheek.
"Please come visit us this weekend, your siblings miss you too, it's summer and we haven't seen you or heard from you in weeks!" She asked, a pleading look on her face.
At his look, she smiled sweetly, as her hand came up to brush the messy black hair out of his eyes.
James only nodded as he swallowed, trying to hold back his tears.
"Yes. I'd like that." He choked, as Ginny pulled him in for a tight hug again.
"We love you, Jamie, don't leave us for such a long time again! Okay?" Her voice was concerned and so full of love.
"I- I promise" He stuttered. "I really do. I-, I love you too!" Was all he managed before Ginny softly replied.
"I know you do Jamie… I know you do."
