Monteriggioni
Many Years Ago
Returning to Monteriggioni after another successful mission felt good as she saw the flags rippling in the wind on top of the stone towers that protected the town within. The church bells rang out as townspeople walked in and out of the gates as the voices of merchants trying to sell their wares drifted in the air.
She was home.
The fatigue of her mission set into her shoulders as she stepped through the gates as she allowed herself to relax, but the smiles she received from the townspeople is what spurred her towards the villa where she found Mentor Claudius and Master Romeo in the study. The pair turning to her as she entered the room.
"Amelia" Claudius greeting the fledgling assassin with a tight-lipped smile "You've returned".
Reaching inside her robes she pulled out a bloodstained feather, presenting it to the senior assassins in the room "Julien du Casse will no longer be selling the Templar Order more weapons".
It was her solo first Templar hit. It had taken her weeks of tracking, observing, listening, before she finally tracked him down to his private island, striking him down before he could send another brig full of weapons to the Templar's.
A proud smirk grew on Romeo's lips as he took the feather from her "And the weapons?" Claudius inquired with the young assassin.
"Sitting at the bottom of the sea" she informed him pulling out a stack of letters placing them on his desk "But not before I had a chance to poke around in his desk, I found these letters from the Grand Master. They look recent".
Curiosity got the better of the Mentor as he picked up the stack himself only to see what she had said was true. They were all letters address to Julian himself all with a broken Templar wax seal the Grand Master himself that once sealed each letter.
He was impressed. Most assassins would just sink the ship and not think about what was on it before it was lost forever, but she had taken the time to look for anything that would further their cause against the Templar's.
"Good work indeed Amelia" Claudius praised the young woman "These will be invaluable to the Brotherhood's cause".
"Thank you, Mentor".
"Get some rest, tomorrow is a new day" the older man tells her with a proud smile as her eyes trailed over to Romeo who wore the same kind smile, he would give her whenever she was successful with her training, it warmed her heart knowing the man she looked up to was proud of her.
"Yes sir" she bowed her head before turning on her heel out of the study.
The days flew by after returning from her successful mission to put a stop to the Templar's getting their hands on more weapons to use against the Creed and the hundreds of innocents that lived in the Enchanted Forest.
For once life was good as a member of the Brotherhood of Assassins. More factions of the Templar's had been found and burnt to ground. Her training was going well. For once it felt like everything was going her way for once.
She couldn't help but giggle as the feather kisses on her back gently roused her from another night of deep restful sleep in her room that she had grown up in in the bordello as she felt her bed-mate for the night pulled her closer to their body after a night full of bruising kisses and desperate touches that bruised their skin, enough to remind the other of what they had done to the other while they were training.
She had certainly been caught out by some of the others as she viably winced whenever she stretched out her arms or legs to take up her stance in front of a stationery target.
"I knew you were ticklish" her bed-mate purred into her ear as she nipped at her ear lobe.
"That is something the other's don't need to know" the redhead tells them as she turns herself around to face Ophelia. The only other female assassin the order looked at her like she was breakfast all wrapped up for her to consume once again
"Morning" Ophelia greeted the younger woman she had spent years molding into the assassin she was today.
"Morning" Amelia replied "I'm surprised your still here".
"Well I'm full of surprises" the Mistress of Stealth purred at her as she closed the distance between the placing a kiss in the sweet spot between Amelia's neck and shoulder.
"Or Paola nearly caught you sneaking out of my room again" Amelia retorted making the older assassin pull her lips away from her neck as the younger assassin gave her a knowing look.
The older assassin relented under Amelia's green eye's knowing she was right "Urgh. That woman doesn't' like me".
"She doesn't like most people. I just might be the exception" she teases her old teacher just as loud knocks are heard from her locked door.
"Amelia! svegliati ragazza ingrata" (Wake up you ungrateful girl) Paola's stern muffled voice came through the wooden door. She was in an unforgiving mood this morning from the sound of the load knocks. Which meant she knew the young redhead wasn't alone
"The exception I'm sure" Ophelia laughed at the redhead's expense.
"Vestiti ora"(Get dressed now) Amelia quietly ordered her bed mate as she pulled herself out of the older assassins reach to sit on the edge of her back her naked back facing her old teacher as, the scars that littered her back disappeared as quickly as the other master assassin saw them as she tied a robe around her body to answer her door. The young girl that she had taken under her roof opened the door enough for her face to be viable but to to show the rest of the room.
"Buongiorno Paola" the girl of eighteen winters greeted her.
"Buongiorno Amelia. You are going to be late for your training" she informs the still growing woman in front of her.
"Grazie Paola, I'll be sure to be ready on time" she tells the Bordello madam as she hears the door that opened out to the small balcony open and close behind her.
"I know you weren't alone last night" the older woman tells her as she forces herself into her room to find it empty with only evidence of their night together in the disturbed sheets that covered her bed. The young Master Assassin stood in her gown with her arms folded over her arms waiting for the madam to leave.
"Romeo told you to leave me alone. We're Assassin's, not Nun's" she reminds the madam. She knew they other's had numerous affairs with men and women throughout the city probably the whole Forest.
"Ophelia is too old for you. Usignolo"
Paola received an eye roll from the girl as she closed the distance between them taking her face into her aging hands "What are you worried about?".
"You have your mother's loving heart Usignolo" the older woman tells her "That is what I am worried about, there will be a time when you'll love someone so much not even the Brotherhood will be able enough for you. And Lady Ophelia is certainly not the woman to do that with".
"What about my father?" she retorted taking her face out of the madam's motherly hands as she headed to her changing screen to dress for the day ahead "Did he have a loving heart when he left my pregnant mother on the streets?" she sniped from behind the screen as the older woman had to bite her tongue to stop her saying something that would put the girl in more danger than not telling her.
As the years ticked by and the lie took hold in her mind, the more bitterness she felt towards a man she didn't know existed only up the road.
"Just get ready, usignolo. Today's a busy day" at that the madam left without a word further said from the younger woman.
"Ahh!" the scream let her throat as she brought down the heavy axe onto Iago's own making him drop onto the ground from the strength she had put behind the finishing move against her former weapon's teacher. Holding the sharp edge of the blade against the base of his throat she waited for the Master of Weapons's to yield as he knelt in-front of her with sweat dripping from his forehead.
It had been an intense battle between the young master assassin and her old teacher as the other's stopped what they were doing to watch them spar inside the training ring with the axe's that could cleanly take off the other's head. Tired pants came from the young redhead as she tried to calm her lungs that felt like they were on fire.
"I yield" he says holding up his hand in surrender. The blade of the axe cut through the air as she took the weapon away from the man's exposed neck as a small round of applause sounded around her as she offered her old teacher a hand back onto his feet only for the friendly hand to go ignored as the man got back onto his feet
"Don't fret Amelia" Romeo's calming voice rang into her ears as she looked around to see he was at the edge of the wooden ring with a proud smirk on his face "Iago's always been a bit of a sore loser" he tried to reassure her as he saw something that made a chill go up his spine.
The world around him slowed down as he saw Iago charge toward his daughter while she had her back to him with the axe he had previously dropped on the ground.
"Iago stop!" Ophelia's voice rang out just as Amelia felt what he was feeling. The young redhead moved just into time for the axe to embed itself into the wooden fence. She felt her heart skip a beat as Romeo vaulted over the edge to drag the Weapons's Master away from his apprentice and the axe that was firmly embedded into the wood missing the young Master Assassin.
"WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING!" her Master raged into the weapons master's face as he held the man by the front of his robes as Tybalt, Richard and Ophelia vaulted down from where they were stood to join them in the ring as Romeo continued to rage into Iago's face for trying to kill her. Richard and Tybalt quickly joined pulling the Master of Ship away from the Iago as Ophelia stayed with the young assassin who had nearly been killed by her own Brother.
"Are you okay?" the female assassin whispered to the young redhead. Amelia could only nod at the woman as world caught up to what she was seeing.
"Enough!" Claudius voice came over men like a bucket of ice cold water making the men freeze. Romeo still held Iago in his hands as they all looked up to their Mentor stood over them with Angelo by his side. "Take him inside to cool down!" he ordered the others.
AT that Tybalt and Richard took Iago out of Romeo's hands as the Master of Ships watched seething in anger at Iago's attempt to kill one of their own "I suggest you do the same Master Montague" Claudius continued to diffuse the situation.
Many a tempers would ignite during training sessions but this was different. Iago looked like he actually wanted to kill her and he was if it wasn't for the girls extra sense to warn her.
At that order her Master took himself off away from the scene probably back to the Jackdaw. Once alone the Mentor looked towards the young assassin he had agreed for his Master of Ship's to take under his wing years ago "Is she injured?" he asked his Mistress of Stealth, the only person here that would be able to sneak up on him.
"No" Ophelia informs him "Not physically".
"Take her to the healer anyway. I will deal with Iago myself once I've dealt with another matter" bowing their heads their Mentor leaves with Angelo slowly following him back into the Villa.
"Come, lets get you a drink" the older female assassin says encouraging the younger woman out of the training ring as she felt her hands shake on their own accord. She did need that drink.
As the sun dipped into the horizon as the young assassin took herself out of the warmth of the tavern Ophelia had taken her to to seek the peace and quiet of the forest to clear her thoughts.
Climbing up the tree she and Anastasia once called their own that was covered by a canopy of green leaves in the spring and summer that they would be protest by the sun and rain. Tall enough for they to see both the city and the docks on a clear day and deep in enough for them not be disturbed by any passerby but to be able to be found by those they trusted with their secret place.
The bark in the tree had been covered by the small games they played to pass the time, scratched into the bark with knives and dagger's. This was the place they promised they were more than apprentices. They were sisters. The scar that swore their bond with blood still visible in the palm of her right hand one she knew that sat in Anastasia's hand wherever she was.
What Iago did was unheard of. An assassin turning on their own.
There had only been one person to do that and his name went unspoken within the Brotherhood. Iago never liked her. She knew that. She was an inconvenience at most, he never wanted to train someone like her, he only had eye's on Claudius's position within the Creed, but as the older man continued to breathe his annoyance only grew. But it wasn't Iago's unprovoked attack, it was Romeo's reaction.
She had never seen him that angry. He was always calm and poised one between the to of them. The one to soothe her through just by his mere presence, the one to tend to the cuts and bruises whenever they appeared after training.
She hadn't realized she had drifted off to sleep sat on one of the tick branches with her back resting against the trunk until she heard a faint shaking of leaves coming from below her. On alert the trained assassin sits up on the branch crawling over to where the 'intruder' was coming from only to see a friendly face climbing up through the branches to find her.
"Lance?" the young assassin greeted the young mercenary as his panic filled eye's found her
"Amy. I thought I'd find you here" he sighed out in relief seeing the redhead safe and sound in her spot "When I couldn't find you in the bordello, I feared the worse" he adds climbing onto the branch with her.
"Why? What happened?" she asked him having heard the panic in his words.
"Claudius is on a war path. He's had the whole city turned upside down in search for you and Master Romeo".
"What?!" she exclaimed in disbelief.
"The mercenaries have been promised your weight in gold to find you and bring you to him. He's even arrested a monk at the church a doctor and they ransacked the bordello looking for Paola".
What's she got to do with this?".
"We don't know. They took to her to one of the turrets under guard by the city watch".
The city watch. Something was really wrong when the city watch was called in to arrest anyone in the city. Controlled by Claudius, the watch was the serve and protect the people within the city wall and the surrounding farmland. To watch the walls for any kind of threat that came towards the city.
She already knew which turret she was in. Without a second thought the assassin started her way down the tall tree as the mercenary followed her down as she boot covered floor hit each of the branches that would take her down to the ground with a thump as she headed back to the city leaving the lanky mercenary to catch up to her.
"He's closed the doors" he quickly reports to her "I only got out just before they closed the door's Claudius has put the whole city on lock-down".
"I don't need a door" she simply tells him as her determined strides towards the city.
"Amelia!" his voice stopped her once more, making her look around to face her friend "I need to tell you. We saw the other assassin's going down to the docks, they're going for Romeo".
Scaling the stone tower was not a problem for the young assassin as she took her time to find each brick that allowed her to inch her way up the turret that held the woman that had looked after her ever since her mother died. She would know what was going on. On why the assassin's were after her and Romeo like this.
Weary of the guards wither side of the only enclosed and largest turret. It just so happened to be the turret that held the heavily guarded door's that opened the city up to whoever needed to find sanctuary in the protected city.
She would have to be careful getting to the woman as she scaled the rampart leading up to the turret to find a guard stood at the edge looking out into the horizon until a hand grabbed the bottom of his uniform being pulled forwards do that he fell head first into a pile of hay that conveniently sat at the bottom of the wall allowing the redhead to climb up onto the top.
Once at the top she was met by an armed guard that saw her straight away. She knew she could kill anyone unless she wanted Claudius to find her straight away so she would have to do this the hard way.
"Voi! fermati lì!" (You! Stop there!) the guard yelled out her pulling out his sword from his waist as he stepped forward to fight her.
Luckily for her the guard swung wildly at her allowing her to deflect the blade with her gauntlets throwing him off slightly, giving her another second to breathe until he came at her again, this time she stepped to the side, allowing him to reach out across her to grab the top of his sword arm and his hand, stopping all movement in his body.
With his sword hand still in hers she let his shoulder go to use her free hand to punch his elbow making him jerk and loosen his grip on the sword, allowing her to slip the pommel of the sword out of his hand, before sending the sole of boot into his stomach. The guard doubled up in pain as he let go of the sword as he stumbled away from her as she threw the sword away.
The guard quickly righted himself, now unarmed go goes to use his fists only for the master assassin to wildly throw a clenched fist towards her of the young woman to block the attacking arm with her forearm, allowing her to grab his helmet covered head to send her forehead it his before bringing a high knee up to meet his head once again to knock him out.
The young redhead slightly stumbled on her feet as her vision doubled from her head meeting the metal helmet "Ow" she squeaked before shaking her head the double vision went as she set her sight on the cell that held Paola.
Climbing the rest of the way until she reached the bars she saw the strong stubborn woman she that had looked after her ever since she was five sat in corner of the dark, dank cell in nothing but her underclothes, a long off white shift that barely covered her from the cold air of the night, chained to the wall by the shackle around her ankle.
"Paola" she whispered through the small iron bars that divided her and the Madam "Paola" she whispered again this time her hushed voice finally meeting her ear as the older woman's head perked up to the window to see Amelia there with two hand wrapped tighty around the cold bars she was hung from to see her.
"Usignolo" she hissed through the air as she stumbled to her feet making the chain scrape against the stone floor. As the older woman stepped closer to the only source of light that came into the cell the young redhead could see the dried blood and bruises along her jaw and cheek.
The older woman had to stand on her toes to reach out for the young gril she had taken in all those years ago, reaching through the bars the older woman took the young redheads face in her cold hands.
"Grazie agli dei" (Thank the gods) the madam whispered in relief weary of the guards on the other side of her door "You are safe" she added.
"What have they done to you?".
"Nothing, that could ever break my spirito" the older woman tells her "What are you doing here?".
"I've come to get you out".
"No. You will do no such thing" Paola quickly tells her as a look of confusion overcomes the young woman "You must remain outside this bars Amelia otherwise I will not be able to keep my promise I made you your mother".
"My mother? What has this got anything to do with her?".
"Everything, mio caro" she tells her stroking the skin under her eye "Tell me. Where is Romeo".
"Lance told me that he and the others had seen the assassins' heading for the Jackdaw" she informs her.
"Then we are too late" the madam says to her.
"Too late? Too late for what?".
"I must tell you a story usignolo, a story that puts you in danger once it leaves my lips. One your father and I have been keeping from your ever since you were born, now that Claudius knows that story than you need to leave this place and never look back".
"What story?" the young redhead gulps.
"Once upon a time, a young assassin came to my door seeking refuge for the woman he loved, they had returned from a distant land after falling in love and escaping her father".
"-But this young assassin didn't just fall in love with a woman, he fell in love with a Templar, with a woman that carried the same name as the family that once killed his before finding the Brotherhood. But that didn't stop this young man loving this woman any less".
"-Marrying in secret, together they made a beautiful, strong daughter, that is the image of her mother in every way and held her father's determination to fight for everything in life, including life itself".
"-While he played his part at the top of the hill, the young woman stayed at the Bordello under my watchful eye to raise their daughter in a place that would happily see they all killed for simply falling in love. However, the star's had fated that this young woman would not see her daughter grow".
"-So to keep her safe, the assassin took his secret daughter under his wing as his apprentice, hiding her in plain sight of the other's, he taught her the way of the Creed that would kill her the second they knew the truth. And so she trained into the strong assassin I see in front of me. The one that is capable of anything, once she sets her mind to it".
"But for now you must run. Run as far and as fast as you can for as long as you can. Find someone who is worthy of the love you hold in your heart. But be careful, your mother's heart might be capable of so much love, but it is also capable of so much darkness".
"I promise" the stammered out as fat tears rolled down the redhead's cheek's.
"Arrivederci amore mio" (Goodbye my love) "If I don't see you in this life again, I will see you in the next".
Romeo was her father.
That's all the young redhead thought of as she ran over the rooftops to get to the Villa. Even thought she promised Paola to run, she couldn't let the man she had loved like a father be harmed by those that would see them killed.
She knew she couldn't just walk in now, so the redhead climbed up the side of the villa like she had done so many time before, climbing up on the roof to the room that sat at the top of the building. Slipping through a window the young assassin dropped through the hatch to run through the two sets short stairs to find herself back in the second floor of the villa. Turning to her left she heard voices coming from the study that was overlooked by the balcony.
"What of the girl?" she heard the caretaker Angelo ask someone.
"She can't be allowed to live. Her blood carries the same blood as our sworn enemy" she hears Mentor Claudius reply "What's to stop her from joining them. We cannot afford another defection like Cormac".
"Might I suggest something else?" the caretaker said as she slowly approach the balcony keeping her footsteps as light as possible for the two men not "Keep her alive and mold her into the weapon we need her to be" the man tells him "She never need know about her true origins. We can all see her potential. She is the Chosen One. The prophesy-".
"I do not have time for tales of prophesy Angelo" Claudius snaps at his caretaker as she pushed herself up against the a pillar, so she could carry on listening "I must save this Creed from the enemies that lie within, or it will fall from within. Prophesy or chosen ones be damned!" he roars at the caretaker "You forget your place here" he growls at his caretaker, having grown tired of his stories.
The caretaker meekly broke eye contact with the angry assassin "Yes Master Claudius. My apologies".
"Go prepare the ships for immediate departure I shall bring the beans for our journey to Neverland".
"Neverland?" the redhead mouthed to herself, in confusion as she saw her father enter with his hand bound behind him. as Tybalt, Iago, Ophelia and Richard escorted him into the room below her.
With his head high, she saw Romeo regard his old teacher as he came to a stop in front of him. He didn't look like he was about to die, he looked like he was going to welcome it like an old friend.
"Do you know why you're here Montague?" his Mentor started getting straight to the point of the meeting.
"I do" he replied without skipping a beat.
"Then you don't deny marrying a follower of the Templar order".
"I don't" he master answered calmly.
"Do you deny bringing her to Monteriggioni and hiding her in the brothel".
"I don't".
"Do you deny fathering a child with the Templar?".
"I don't".
"Do you deny bringing said child into the Order and taking her as you own apprentice?".
"I don't" he admits to his Mentor.
With his admission clear as day the Mentor paused looking at the younger man looking for anything that told him he wasn't telling the truth, but he knew Romeo too well. He always spoke the truth.
"Romeo Montague, you have been found guilty of treason by the Brotherhood of Assassin's. You have been broken all three of the sacred tenets that has lain the foundation of this Creed. Do you remember what they are".
"I do" Romeo answers him.
"I cannot abide a traitor".
"I am not a traitor!" Romeo exclaims as he is held back by Iago and Tybalt by his shoulders either side of him.
"Your actions indicate otherwise, so you leave me no choice" Claudius argues.
"I Claudius. Mentor of the Brotherhood of Assassin's, strip you of your title as Master Assassin and Master of Ships. And sentence you to die. Peace be upon you Romeo".
As quickly as his sentence was stated, it was carried out as the older man unsheathes his hidden blade's shoving the into her Master's chest a strangled gasp coming from the man that was her father as his knee's gave out from underneath him before lifelessly collapsing on the marble floor.
"Nooooo!" the scream was heard above them as they all looked up to see her on the balcony that overlooked his study, horror etched onto her face seeing Claudius's blade sink into Romeo's chest.
"Bring her back here alive!" she heard him roar through the walls of the villa as she ran back through the stairs she had come from, turning a sharp right to the tight corridor that ended with the ladder going up the Claudius's private room. She barely felt her hands and feet hit each rung of the ladder until she found herself closing the hatch behind her, jumping out the same window she had entered through.
Running to the edge of the roof the young redhead didn't hesitate jumping off the edge into a pile of hay on the ground. She heard the other's as soon as she jumped out of the hay as she jumped and somersaulted her way to the roof's that sat below the villa.
The shingles of the roof's shook and clanked each time she took a step towards her freedom. She had to get to the wall first as she looked back to see Tybalt behind her, his quick feet matching her own as they. But she knew she was quicker than him. The so called Master of Thieves. He was the fasted out of all of them after years running from guards in Agarbah.
Jumping from roof to roof, she found course she knew by heart that would take her to the stone ramparts. The sole of her feet hit the wooden beams attached to the wall as she stepped on each on, only for an arrow to cut her stop short making her grab onto the wall as her feet teetered on the edge of the beam.
Looking down she saw Richard on the ground with a bow and his hand as he reached back to pull out another arrow to notch into his bow and aim straight at her. The arrow head only missed her head by an inch as she pushed herself forward to reach her destination.
Once up and over the young assassin faced her next challenge in the image of Iago with a his whip in his hand, throwing out the long leather cord cracked against he stone rampart to intimidate her.
"I'm going to enjoy this traitor" Iago said as he stepped forward to start his unrelenting lashings.
Some quick thinking on her her part made her pull out her sword from her belt as he threw the whip forward, making the whip wrap itself around the blade instead of maiming her. With a harsh tug the whip was taken out of his hand in her's. His eyes bugged in panic seeing the weapon in her hand instead of his. She could get her own back on the Master that enjoyed hurting her, but today wasn't' that say instead the redhead threw the whip over the edge of the rampart so it landed in front of Richard on the ground.
Truing a sharp turn the left the young redhead took the leap of faith of her life as she prayed to whoever was listening at that moment. ago didn't get a chance to say anything else as he saw the young girl's feet leap off the edge of the rampart onto the other-side.
Rushing to the edge he stopped himself with his hands as he saw her land into a pile a hay that she must've known was there before jumping back up unscathed, before she found a horse that had been waiting for her.
"After her!" Iago's voice rang out as the girl galloped away into the surrounding forest to find her freedom away from the Brotherhood of Assassin's.
Monterigioni
29 Years Later
This was one of the first places the redheaded assassin visited once she and Tom were settled back in the place she called home. Sat on a hill that overlooked the city the woman knelt in front of three headstone of three of the most important people in her life. Her mother, Juliet. Her father, Romeo. and lastly, the one person she could rely on anything for.
Paola.
She tried to get her to stop her at her darkest. She doubted even her own father could've convinced her to stop her becoming the Black Widow. But she supposed it didn't matter now. They were back. Back to where they belonged, not in Storybrooke.
Maria had told her she slipped away in her sleep only a decade ago under the shield that had protected them from the Evil Queen's curse. But she never went a day without thinking about her. Of the girl she had taken in knowing full well what would happen if her secret was ever found out.
Settling herself down on the wet dew grass, she let her eyes close as she concentrated on her breathing. In. Out. In. Out. In. Out.
She imagined herself back in the villa, in the study downstairs, with the woman looking like the last time she had seen her, sat behind the large desk nose deep in the city's accounts and a feather quill in her hand with herself sat in one of the chairs opposite her.
"I did it Paola" she says to the woman making her stop what she was doing to look up her "I overcame the darkness".
"Was it worth getting cursed for your troubles, usignolo?" she drawled out as she put quill back to paper.
"It was" Amelia tells her.
"Good, but you know there is still a mountain to climb. One good deed doesn't out do all the hurt you've caused" she reminds her.
"I know" Amelia replies.
"But it's a start".
"I miss you"
"I know. But you need to get back to the family you have found without me. You don't need this vecchia, to tell you what to next anymore".
"I will. I promise Paola"
Opening her eye's again, she found herself back on the hill, sat in front of the three headstones as she felt a gentle breeze
"Amelia" Tom's voice interrupted her to see the Lost Boy she had taken in sat next to her "Who was she?" he asks her.
"Everything" she answered him as she stood herself up from the ground. quickly followed by the teen "Come, we've still got time for some training before Neal and Belle arrive" at that the pair make their way down the hill back towards the city that had served as her home.
