"How are you feeling today?" Meibel asked as she sat at the breakfast table.

"I'm fine," Frederick insisted.

"Do you need anything? You look like you're in pain."

"A little flare-up, that's all. It's getting cooler outside. I can't be worried every time there's a change in the weather."

"You're sure?" She frowned.

Frederick looked over. "Come here," he said, holding out his hand.

Meibel walked over, taking his hand. Her eyes were wet.

"I'd tell you to sit in my lap, but that would be a bad idea this morning."

She gave a brief smile, pulling over a chair.
