Brooklyn followed Smaug who had by now reached Laketown and began to burn it, hearing the screaming of innocent people being killed. His heart felt terrible for what his father was doing.
Smaug roared loud into the air while shooting his flames, Brooklyn having managed to make it into the village, the flames making him wince a little from the heat but he had to stop him, mostly for any innocent children.
"Father! Don't do this!" Shouted Brooklyn in despair, seeing him in a farther part of the village, his eyes still lighted up with craziness from the Arkenstone. Brooklyn hoped they could destroy that cursed stone when all this is over. He didn't care now if Thorin had claimed it as the 'King's Jewel'. It was dangerous.
But his father didn't hear him, continuing his destruction, while Bard had climbed up the belltower that was still ringing, trying to shoot him down. Brooklyn doged one arrow that nearly went his way but it wasn't a black arrow so he wasn't in any danger.
He was unaware that the son had found a black arrow that they had hidden in a rowboat, too focused on saving the town. At first Brooklyn managed to tackle his father, crashing into the burning houses, more screaming hitting his ears. Bard was startled at the appearance of a second dragon, arm holding his bow shaking but knew he had to kill them both, for two dragons were just as dangerous, not knowing it was Brooklyn.
The former gargoyle tried holding his father still, but the older wyvern wasn't having it, roaring madly, scratching his face again and knocking him off. "You won't stop me, son! Not this time!" Roared Smaug defiantly, raising up to his full height, the stone truly had taken his heart. Brooklyn's sank in disappointment and grief, tears falling, not wanting to lose anymore family.
"Please… don't kill… innocent… lives," Brooklyn begged in a weak voice, blood dripping down his face from the talons. Smaug just gave him the devil's stare then turned around, spotting Bard from afar, an evil smirk on his face from seeing this, flying up again, his talons breaking off part of the belltower roof. It nearly caused Bard's son Bain to fall off. Eyes widening, Brooklyn ran over.
Bain screamed at the sight of him but Brooklyn made his gaze as non threatening as possible, putting his muzzle under his feet, bringing him up to safety. Bard took his son into his arms, gazing at the new friendlier looking dragon in some amazement but nodded a little, right as Smaug landed behind the tower, grinning menacingly.
Brooklyn for the moment didn't know what to do now, none of his efforts having any effect on his dad, could do nothing but watch the events unfold. "Who are you, who would dare to stand against me?!" Bellowed Smaug in a voice that was pretty much the arkenstone speaking through him. Bard held firm, Brooklyn keeping behind the belltower in case he was needed. But at the moment his father was too focused on Bard to notice him, Bard readying the black arrow.
"Now that is a pity… what will you do now? Bowman? Not even my 'child' could stop me. You are forsaken! No help will come!" Smaug taunted, showing off all his deadly fangs. His father's voice was really evil, and not loving like before, making Brooklyn tremble, also watching what Bard would do. Smaug next had spotted Bard's child, taunting at how he will burn.
Brooklyn growled. "No! You can't hurt a child!" He shouted. Smaug hissed, while Bard set up the final arrow, aiming at Smaug. Smaug snarled. "They have nothing left, but their death!" The older wyvern gave his loudest roar yet, charging. Bard shot the arrow that was propped up on Bain. Brooklyn's eyes widened in fear for his father, screeching out and running in between the arrow and Smaug.
Smaug halted in his charge, staring, seeing the arrow suddenly pierce his hatchling's chest above his heart. The pain struck Brooklyn hard, making him shriek out, fiery agony shooting through his body. Bard saw what had happened, dropping the bow, not having meant to hurt the one that saved his son. But why did he save this demon dragon?
"NOOOO!" Smaug bellowed, his face of anger and evil having changed to despair, seeing his son falling onto the water outside of the village, whimpering and moaning in pain, slowly losing consciousness. Smaug ran over to his son out of the way of the houses, kneeling down in the water near him. Blood came out of Brooklyn's chest, making him feel pale and dizzy. "My son? Speak to me…" Smaug said softly, stroking Brooklyn's face with his talon.
Brook glanced up with tiredness, smiling, before soon, the light left his eyes, and his head lolled back, exhaling his last breath. Brooklyn had died trying to save his family. Smaug shook him gently, nuzzling his son all over. "Don't! Don't leave me, no!" The great dragon cried, his tears falling down, feeling his body growing cold from death. He pulled out that cursed black arrow, throwing it away.
Bain looked upset at what had happened, clinging to his father, eyes cast down in guilt. He now realized the dragon he had shot was Brooklyn.
Smaug lay there near his son's body by the shore of the water for a while, ignoring the screams of people, too worried about his son, having snapped out of his obsession for the arkenstone had faded away.
"My child… I'm so sorry!" Smaug said in the softest voice he had yet, even after having that demonic voice earlier. "Don't leave me… I need you!" His tears fell down, falling onto the wound. The tears having been mixed with love. It flashed when hitting the wound.
He could feel his heart beating again, and his eyelids flickering open. Brooklyn moaned, getting his senses back but felt someone holding him tight. Turning he saw it was Smaug, his father. His eyes rounded a little in surprise, but weakly smiled. Smaug heard the groan, gasping, seeing his son's eyes open, and alive again!
"Hey, father," Brook weakly mumbled, feeling drained from it all. Smaug cried, seeing his son had been given life again. The two of them huddled against each other, sharing their love, Brooklyn glad to see his father had snapped out of it all. Bard and Bain had climbed down from the belltower, the two relieved that Brooklyn wasn't dead.
Smaug had turned around, seeing the two of them watching, glaring, hating them for shooting his hatchling but Brooklyn made him look at him, shaking his head no. "This town has had enough destruction and hardship, father. They don't need anymore. And there are little children in there. Can we please talk to the dwarves this time?" Smaug didn't know about it at first after what he did to them, until, his head nodded. "Alright, I will take your word… for now. Let us go home. But ensure I will never see that blasted stone ever again."
Brooklyn grinned. "I will," He promised, giving him a light nuzzle, still a little weak but his wings felt strong enough to fly home. "Are you sure you can fly by yourself?" Smaug asked in concern, gazing at his son's wings in concern. Brook shrugged. "Think so." He raised his wings, Smaug taking off first, flying into the air, many of the townsfolk watching in amazement at the sight of the one that burned down their homes actually leaving them.
The second took a breath, feeling nervous, not wanting to drop out of the sky in exhaustion; soaring back to the Lonely Mountain, where the peace making would unfold between Smaug the Terrible and the Dwarves of Erebor.
Father and son flew across the valley, Brooklyn sometimes panting, feeling exhausted from his near death experience but Smaug kept a close eye on his child, to ensure he was safe.
It only took them about 2 hours to fly back, and Brooklyn could see the dwarfs and Bilbo waiting for them, a smile on his face, and happy to see them again. Fangspirit woofed near Bilbo who held him back as the two dragons landed. Thorin glared at Smaug who was no different with his expression, the two managed to set foot again on the ground near the mountain.
Brooklyn's dragon ears lowered a little when Thorin still had his stern look on his face. He gulped, Smaug looking disgusted for being near the dwarves. The young hybrid then spoke up.
"I-I know I have a long story for all of you. But my dad promised not to harm those in Laketown anymore, as long as we can all share the treasure inside." Brooklyn said shyly. Bilbo looked at Thorin who seemed distrustful but Balin spoke up. "Perhaps this is a wise choice from this laddie, Thorin. We won't have to kill anyone, and they won't kill anybody either. A peace pact could be the right call. Plus Brooklyn nearly died saving both Laketown and us!"
Thorin growled a little, watching the two dragons, his heart at first undecided, but then eventually he sighed, nodding. Bilbo, knowing he couldn't wait anymore, spoke up. "I-I also found the arkenstone, the one that, made Smaug attack in the first place. We can't keep this thing anymore, it is cursed."
He pulled out the shining stone, making Smaug and Thorin stare hungrily at it, but Brooklyn shook his head at his father. "Don't fall for the stone again, father, please!" Smaug saw how pleading his son was, and soon, he backed down, Bilbo placing the stone on the ground, looking up at Brooklyn, who felt he had more will from the stone's temptations to destroy it and Bilbo trusted him to do it.
Taking another breath, Brooklyn breathed his fire, burning up the stone, seeing the stone explode from the flames, making them all shield their eyes. The arkenstone was at last gone for good, and not harm anyone ever again.
All the dwarves were amazed at how someone like Brooklyn was able to destroy something so tempting and alluring. Brooklyn now felt tired more from breathing on it, looking at his father, whose eyes changed from the lust and anger to humility and loving, nuzzling his son. The other dwarves smiled at the sight minus Thorin but Thorin seemed to like it a little, glad the dragons weren't going to hurt them, the group going back inside to rest and celebrate until Gandalf came to meet up with them to see what had become of the group.
