She closed the door and put her seatbelt on, taking a deep breath, grounding herself. Seldom anymore was she excited to receive a call from work, but when she saw Hotch's name light up her phone, she felt a wave of relief wash over her. She needed out. She needed out of that room. She needed out of her apartment. And mostly she needed away from Will. Will LaMontagne was a good man. He was a nice man, he treated her well in the few months they had dated, but that was all it was ever supposed to be. She had felt nauseated when she saw the two pink lines show up in the tiny window on the stick she was holding. They'd relied on her birth control, but it had failed. Will was never supposed to be a permanent fixture in her life. When his southern drawl had showered her with compliments she thought that perhaps he would serve as a good distraction since she had become essentially estranged from the most important person in her life. Recently, she had seen the life returning to his eyes. She noticed his small smiles directed at her. Their conversation had started to come easily again. In reality, she was planning on ending things with Will during his trip to visit her. But now this.
She didn't know what she would do. She didn't know how he would react. The excitement that was his response to the news was something she was not prepared for. It never seemed to cross his mind that she wouldn't want this. After her phone rang, he immediately confronted her about being pulled out of the field. Her mouth hung open slightly, baffled that he would even suggest it. She saw a spark of anger in him as she made it known, in no uncertain terms, that she was not giving up her career for this, for him, for…it.
The case had been a stressful one, and the stress was not alleviated when she saw Will walk into the lobby. In front of the team, he proudly announced their pregnancy, and the fact that he had asked her to marry him. She had already declined his proposal, which only added insult to injury as she looked up and saw the shock register on Reid's face. The team left her to talk with Will, and she felt a lump in her throat as anger filled her. "How dare you!?" She demanded. "How dare you walk in here and announce to my team things that we haven't even decided on?!". "I've decided Cher" he said in a quiet voice. "I'm here, an I'm yours, and I want to be the best father to our child that I can."
As the other agents walked away, Emily reached out a hand and gently rested it on Spencer's shoulder. He turned to meet her gaze. "Are you ok?" She asked. "Why wouldn't I be?" He answered quickly. "No reason" she said tentatively, "Just checking in". With that Spencer walked to his hotel room and opened the door. He stepped inside and closed the door behind him, which he then slid down, sitting with his head between his knees. He had known J.J. Was seeing Will, but he had never sensed any permanence in it. Not only had he misread the relationship, but she never told him she was pregnant. There was a time when he would have thought he would be the first one she would tell, but now doubt swam through his head. He took a deep, shaky breath as he reached into his jacket pocked and felt the cool plastic of the chip that now went everywhere with him. He had battled his demons, and had come out on the other side. He and J.J. Had mended their friendship in a huge way, and without him realizing it, a lot of feelings had resurfaced. He thought a long time ago that he had given up on ever being anything more than friends with the beautiful Jennifer Jareau, but now that he sit here, with a pit in his stomach, and a hole in his heart, he realized that was never the case. He would always love her, and he would always be her Spence.
