Disclaimer: I don't own anything

A warm sunny day. A normal day like any other. For a broke college student, that meant working when classes were done. So instead of sleeping in on a weekend, Temari rose out of bed. At the crack of dawn, to get to work.

One downside to working at a bakery.

Upside she could eat all the pastries she wanted.

She liked her boss so she didn't complain much. Still. It would be nice not waking up so early every weekend.

She got out of bed, got dressed, ate nothing, and drove herself to work. She worked her normal shift and would return home around 2pm.

Usually her roommate Tenten would have lunch ready for her. She was a nice girl. Had strange hobbies but never overstepped her boundaries.

Temari entered the apartment to find Tenten humming in the kitchen. A bowl of mac n cheese was waiting for her on the table.

Tenten turned around and cheerfully greeted her friend.

"Hey Temari! How was work? Any trouble today?"

Temari hung her car keys on their key rack. She took off her sweater (early mornings were always cold) and tossed it on the nearest couch. She washed her hands before taking a seat to eat her meal.

"Work was work. Nothing crazy or bad. Just another normal day."

"Hey, a boring day is better than a hectic day." Tenten began the process of cleaning up the dirty dishes.

"What did you do?"

"Went out shopping earlier for some toilet paper. Came back with a bunch of crap I don't need." Tenten laughed.

"Did you at least get toilet paper?"

Tenten stopped scrubbing a pot as she mentally went over what she bought. Followed by loudly shouting "shit!"

Temari shook her head. She continued to eat her meal.

Tenten started cursing under her breath. Angrily scrubbing the last few dirty dishes. Temari went over to the sink to wash her dirty bowl. But Tenten was still mad about the toilet paper she snatched the bowl out of Temari's hand. Then proceeded to angrily scrub the bowl.

The dishes came out a little shinier than normal.

"Want to go back to the store?" Temari asked.

"No," Tenten whined.

"I can go then."

Tenten huffed and retreated to her room.

Temari said nothing. Her friend seemed to be in an odd mood. She grabbed her car keys again and left the apartment. She calmly walked back to her car.

Getting into her car and starting the engine, Temari was not surprised when Tenten entered through the passenger side. She pouted as she buckled her seatbelt.

"I do want to go."

Temari rolled her eyes at Tenten's childish behavior. She couldn't help but laugh mentally. It was never a dull moment with Tenten around.

Once they arrived at the store both girls made a beeline for the toilet paper. Tenten kept chanting "tp tp tp" to help remember what they came for.

Having the toilet paper secure in their shopping cart, they decided to casually browse everything else. Here's where trouble began. In the mug/cups section.

Both girls were laughing and joking about some of the prints on the cups. Tenten picked one she really liked.

The cup read 'best boyfriend'. The design was simple. White cup with blue words.

"I'm buying this."

Temari snorted. "I highly doubt Neji's the best."

Tenten stuck out her tongue. "Just because you won't admit your relationship with Shikamaru."

"We're not in a relationship."

"And I don't have a knife collection."

"You don't have an anniversary coming up. Why get it?"

"I don't need a reason. I want to."

Temari shrugged. "If it gets you laid."

Tenten laughed and playing pushed her friend. She placed the cup into the cart. "I can say the same to you."

Temari didn't respond but she cracked a smile.

They continued to walk around the store, with Tenten buying more useless things, before they made the trip back home. They gathered their bags and returned to their apartment.

They continued their routine like normal. Going to school, work, homework, sleep, repeat. Unless Neji came to pick up Tenten for a date or spend the night. Sometimes things would shake up when Shikamaru came over.

After all, Temari wasn't in a relationship with him.

But they did have sex.

No strings attached of course.

It wasn't serious.

Just a stress reliever.

A very casual situation.

"Are you hungry? I could order something." Shikamaru watched Temari get dressed. He remained lying in her bed, naked.

"Cheese fries."

Shikamaru placed the order for delivery. He yawned loudly. With tears in his eyes he was ready for a nap.

"Don't you have work soon?" Temari asked in a teasing tone.

"I'm always late." Shikamaru closed his eyes.

"Yes because everything is too much work."

Light snoring.

Temari looked over to see him asleep. She rolled her eyes. She was annoyed how easily he fell asleep. At least she had the decency to make sure his lower half was covered before stepping out her room. And shutting her door.

Temari did some cleaning around the apartment. Tenten was on campus for a class. Shikamaru continued to sleep. Temari made herself busy.

Until her food arrived. Then she took a much needed break. After her break, and cleaning up, Temari ventured into the bathroom.

Easily the messiest room in the entire apartment. Not by choice. In Temari's opinion most of the junk in the bathroom pertained to Neji's hair products.

That she sometimes used.

It made her hair very soft. Still, the room had been left too long without cleaning. Nothing a gallon of bleach can't fix.

Shikamaru eventually woke up due to the smell. He had a minor panic attack. In his dream state his mind took him back to his childhood. With cleaning products and his mother's very loud music.

He got dressed and exited Temari's room. He followed the strong smell to the bathroom. Temari was wiping down the sink.

"Are you trying to kill yourself with all these fumes?"

"Shut up."

"Was the food good?"

"Yup. Yours is still in the bag."

He didn't comment but remained staring at her. Temari took the hint after 40 seconds of silence. She followed him to the kitchen.

"I already ate. Why do you want me here?"

"I like the company."

"You're weird."

"I like you too."

Shikamaru sat down and took his food out of the bag. He ate his lunch. Temari just watched him. Like a weirdo. Because she didn't know what else to do.

Until a funny idea popped into her head.

Normally Shikamaru wasn't one for coffee. But he did like how Temari prepared hers. So when he noticed Temari firing up the coffee maker, he perked up.

"Can I get a cup?"

"Sure," Temari shrugged. Acting as casually as possible.

She brought out 2 mugs from the cabinet. 1 plain red and the other white with blue words. Filling up the mugs, Temari handed her guest his cup.

Shikamaru took a sip of the coffee before realizing what the mug said. He chuckled.

"Has my status upgraded?"

"Nope." Temari took a drink from her mug.

Shikamaru bit back a laugh and drank some more.

Silence in the apartment. Temari didn't mind it. She finished her mug and placed it in the sink. She'd wash it later.

Shikamaru continued to eat and drink coffee. Temari eventually got bored and went to switch on the tv. She sat on the couch and began to flip through the channels.

She heard Shikamaru clear his throat.

"Do you need to tell me something?"

Temari turned her attention away from the t.v. She raised her brow, "no."

"Really?"

"Why are you acting weird? If I was going to talk to you I would."

"Nothing to get off your chest?"

"Do you have something to say?" Temari practically spat out.

Shikamaru stood up from his chair. "I'm going to work. I'll see you later."

He retrieved his car keys and phone before flying out the front door. Temari just stared at the empty space where he once sat. That was weird of him.

Normally he would kiss her goodbye. Maybe go for a hug. And she would playfully push him away. Since they were not in a relationship, it was part of their game.

It kind of annoyed her that he didn't do it. Along with the questions he had.

Jerk.

Still annoyed, Temari took out the trash. The walk to the dumpster would help calm her down.

Returning to the apartment she found Tenten and Neji had just arrived. Tenten greeted her with a smile while Neji picked up his mug from the table.

"Did you use my mug?"

"No. I made coffee. Shikamaru was here earlier. He had one."

Neji looked down at the empty mug in his hand. Neji then gave Tenten a look. "Explains why he looked so panicked."

Temari looked confused. "What are you talking about?"

Tenten offered no explanation. She began to laugh.

Neji sighed and shook his head. He pointed the mug toward Temari. "Read the inside."

Temari, still confused, looked inside of the mug.

"You're a Dad!"

Tenten laughed harder at Temari's dumbfounded expression.

"Oh for fucks sake."

Neji shrugged, "I thought it was humorous."

Tenten was practically crying from all her laughing.

"I hate you both."

Temari hid in her room to try and do damage control. She first sent Shikamaru a text message that read "it's not what you think."

Followed by another message, in all caps, that read "I'm not pregnant!"

She hoped that would get his attention.

Hours later Shikamaru called her phone. He was on a lunch break.

"Uh hi."

"I'm not pregnant." Temari went straight to the point. She needed to clear up this mess.

She could hear Shikamaru breathe in relief.

"Thank God. I'm not ready to be a father."

Temari could feel her face heating up. "Why would you run out like that? What if I was pregnant?"

Shikamaru was silent for a moment before he answered. "Look, I panicked. It's not my best moment but I didn't know what else to do. You looked like you didn't care. I mean who just drops a bomb like that over a cup!"

"I wouldn't! I'd be too busy kicking your ass for knocking me up!"

"Exactly! That's why I was confused."

Temari had the urge to smack her forehead. But she didn't. She would be sure to smack Shikamaru the next time she saw him.

"I'm not like other girls. I don't do that cutesy crap. I wouldn't beat around the bush with serious news like that. If I was pregnant I would sit you down and tell you. Followed by handing you a passport so you could flee the country. My father would murder you."

She vaguely heard Shikamaru mumble under his breath "troublesome."

She shook her head. "Next time don't assume, talk to me face to face."

"Don't buy 'cutesy' cups anymore."

She rolled her eyes, "I'll try my hardest."

"Ok I gotta go. I love you."

"Love you too." Temari ended the call.

She blinked a few times when she realized the words that came out of her mouth. Her phone beeped to signal a new text message.

Shikamaru sent "so my status has upgraded ;)"

Temari ignored the message but smiled. Maybe she would get him his own cutesy mug.

Happy New Year everyone! Hope everyone had a safe holiday. Here's to hopefully a better year. Until next time! Thanks for reading.
