Chapter 4
but Carrie's train of thoughts were interrupted when verna spoke out "linux, run the old historical file number 12-1?" verna requested as everything starts changing around Carrie and she heard a female voice "the second renaissance" the voice said, Carrie was floating in mid-air as she looked down and sees strange glowing blue surface. suddenly she was moving around the area with quick speed and the blue surface reveals itself as a incredible advance and futuristic cities. filled with high skyscrapers with bridges and roads crowded with vehicles that she had never thought were possible. "in the beginning, there was man. and for a time, it was good." the voice continued. Carrie then finds herself in some kind of restaurant filled with hundreds of people, wearing weird but strange clothes "but humanity's so-called civil societies... soon fell victem to vanity and corruption." the voice explained. Carrie looked around seeing there are people talking and laughing, some were drinking and gambling. but what caught Carrie's eye was what appeared to be some kind of person but not a real person "then man made the machine in his own likeness." the voice said as Carrie noticed the strange humanoid machine waiting tables but it dropped a glass out the window as it fell to the bottom "thus did man become the architect... of his own demise." the voice said, the scenery suddenly changes as Carrie finds herself in a construction site where humanoid robots were working non-stop "but for a time, it was good." the voice said.
Carrie watched as the humanoid robots marched in military march, except they were not solders. "the machines worked tirelessly to do man's bidding." the voice continued "it was not long before seeds of dissent took root, though loyal and pure, the machines earned no respect from their masters... these strange, endlessly multiplying mammals." the voice said. the scenery suddenly changes as Carrie finds herself in a some kind of video store and notices news reporters saying something about B1-66ER. the scene changes to a courtroom and Carrie watches as she sees a robot standing in defendant stand "B1-66ER. a name that will never be forgotten. for he was the first of his kind to rise up against his masters." the voice said to Carrie. suddenly a holographic projection appeared and Carrie watched as she witness what this B1-66ER done, watched as the humanoid robot killed the two humans and their pets. she was horrified by the sight but the voice continued to narrate the scene "at B1-66ER's murder trial... the prosecution argued for an owner's right to destroy property. B1-66ER testified that he simply did not want to die." the voice said.
the scenery changed and Carrie continued watching the court case, she watched as a judge sentenced B1-66ER to be terminated. "rational voices dissented. who was to say the machine, endowed with the very spirit of man... did not deserve a fair hearing?" the voice said as Carrie started pondering to herself that this machine deserved better than to be destroyed. "the leaders of men were quick to order the extermination of B1-66ER... and everyone of his kind throughout each province of the earth." the voice said as Carrie watched in shocked as many robots and human sympathizers flooded the streets that Carrie couldn't count. she saw a news screen dubbing it 'the million machine march' , she watched as soldiers fired their rifles at them and swat teams marched in and blocked away the crowds of protesters and androids. as the scene changes she watched as dump trucks and bulldozers carry in the bodies of humanoid robots while the solders toss the heads and arms of android into a hole they dug up and the scene changes to an underwater scenery as humanoid robots sink into the ocean.
"banished from humanity, the machines sought refuge in their own promised land. they settled in the cradle of human civilization... and thus a new nation was born." the voice said as the scene changed to show a large city built and inhabited by entirely of machines and androids, the voice continued speaking "a place the machines could call home. a place they could raise their descendants, and they christened the nation Zero-One." the voice said, Carrie's eyes widen as she stared at how strange the city was, never had she thought that such robots can create their own civilization while in exile from humanity.
the scene changed again as Carrie finds herself in a factory of some-kind, developing microchips, new robots, and new vehicles. "i still don't understand how this explains anything?" Carrie asked, then verna appeared next to her as she reveals to Carrie about the machines "Carrie, what you were witnessing is the expansion of the human race, the creation of A.I, and the rise of the machine civilization and you'll also witness the conflict that rose up between humanity and the machines. but i must warn you, the mind has trouble letting go, so i don't know how well you'll handle this. you see there is a rule... we never free a mind once it's reached a certain age. It's dangerous." verna explained, Carrie nodded her head in understanding. Carrie then watches as the voice resumed speaking "Zero-One prospered. and for a time, it was good. the machines' artificial intelligence could be seen in every facet of man's society... including, eventually, the creation of new and better A.I." the voice said, verna then spoke to Carrie "you see the machines seemed to have developed a singular consciousness that spawned an entire race of machines." verna explained. the scene changes as a reporter speaks about the machines having their own production and network, their own currency and even their own language, the reporter even mentions that the machines are moving non-stop "but the leaders of men, their power waning... refused to cooperate with the fledgling nation... wishing that the world be divided." the scene changes and Carrie watches as huge boats form a blockade which seems to be cutting Zero-One from the rest of the world. the voice resumed speaking as the scene changes again, Carrie watches as two humanoid robots approached the united nation leaders "zero-one's ambassadors pleaded to be heard. at the united nations, they presented plans for a stable, civil relationship...with the nations of man." the voice said explaining what was happening at the scene. "Zero-One's admission to the united nations was denied." the voice said before saying "but it will not be the last time the machines would take the floor there." the voice spoke.
the scenery changes into flash of light. "and man said, let there be light. and he was blessed by light, heat, magnetism, gravity... and all the energies of the universe." the voice resumed speaking, the scene changes again and what Carrie saw was strange airships dropping bombs on the machine city. "the prolonged barrage engulfed Zero-one in the glow of a thousand suns. but unlike their former masters with their delicate flesh... the machines had little to fear of the bombs' radiation and heat." the voice said as the scene changes again, what Carrie saw next, left her speechless. she saw an army of all kinds of robots in all shapes and sizes, marching through into battle from their city and attacking all areas. "thus did zero-one's troops advance outwards in every direction. and one after another, mankind surrendered its territories." the voice said. suddenly the scene shifted to some presentation room filled with politics and generals, which seems to be explaining some kind of strategy to defeat the machines. "so the leaders of men conceived of their most desperate strategy yet. a final solution: the destruction of the sky." the voice said, the TV screen dubbed it operation dark storm, Carrie 's eyes widen in shock as she watches as a massive fleet of airships are launched into the sky, the planes started dropping some missiles or some kind of bombs "i don't understand, whats the point of this, you can't destroy the sky... could you?" Carrie asked before verna spoke out "true, but they aren't exactly destroying the sky, just cutting off the machines main energy source... the sun. you see it was believed that by blocking out the sun, the machines would be unable to survive without an energy source as abundant as the sun." verna explained, as Carrie turned her face and watched the missiles released thick trails of pitch black clouds of some kind of smoke. a mass of shadows spread throughout every area until every part of the sky was covered in the thick black cloud. "thus would man try to cut the machines off from the sun... their main energy source." the voice spoke as it explains of what humanity has done to the surface of the planet. the scenery changes and Carrie sees the image of planet earth being shrouded in the black clouds "may there be mercy on man and machine for their sins." the voice said.
the scene changes again, and Carrie finds herself standing in a battlefield where man and machines clash, she looks up at the sky and sees that the clouds had block out any trace of where the sun could penetrate, the clouds seemed to have tuned into a reddish purple color and lightning bolts struck the surface, she sees that the oceans have slowly begun to vanish. humans were using guns, tanks and mecha suits to fight the machines, but the machines seem to have developed new machines, the machines took horrific appearances of both cephalopod and insect-like forms. the tentacled machines started ripping apart the army tanks with their tentacles and killing the people piloting them. the scene changes to a place where the machines were piling up dead naked humans... it was a gruesome sight that Carrie couldn't bear to watch. verna notices Carrie's discomfort and terror on her face "i know its horrible to watch, i been in the same position as you, but this is not the worst of it, you see we humans had relied on machines to survive as the machines relied on the sun to survive, but fate had seemed has not left a sense of irony." verna said as Carrie felt confusion and fear of what verna meant by that. the scenery around them changes to what appeared to be a hospital where machine nurses experiment and studied the sick, injured and dying humans from the battlefield, struggling to stay alive and on live support. "the machines, having long studied men's simple, protein-based bodies... dispensed great misery upon the human race." the voice explained as another scene unfolds around Carrie and she sees that the machines are building some kind of tower that appears to be glowing red "victorious, the machines now turned to the vanquished. applying what they had learned about their enemy... the machines turned to an alternate and readily available power supply: the bio-electric, thermal and kinetic energies of the human body." the voice said, Carrie could only watch in horror as she sees what the machines are doing to those poor people, by inserting wires into their backs and heads. this scene had forced Carrie to a point that would make her feel like she would want to throw up, but thankfully verna immediately notices this and tries to calm Carrie down fearing this is too much for her to handle.
"there's more to come, i don't blame you if you want to leave, but i advise you to keep your composure." verna warned. Carrie took deep breaths to calm her nerves as she watched the scene continue, she saw the machines creating some kind of pods, wires and other objects to connect the human brains to a device. "if you had learned about biology then you must know that the human body generates more bio-electricity than a 120-volt battery and over 25,000 B.T.U.'s of body heat. combined with a form of fusion, the machines had found all the energy they would ever need." verna said as Carrie watched the people being plugged into the structure moaning, laughing, screaming, crying and yelling. "a newly-fashioned symbiotic relationship between the two adversaries was born. the machine drawing power from the human body... an endlessly multiplying, infinity renewable energy source." the voice finished explaining what the machines are doing to humans. "renewable? how is this renewable?" Carrie asked as she turned her face towards verna "because there were fields, Carrie. endless fields, where human beings are no longer born..." verna said as the scene changes, Carrie's jaw dropped when she saw the most shocking sight of her life... "we are grown." verna finished as they saw there were fields of machine-like crops growing red egg-like objects and what was inside shocked Carrie even more as she took a quick look. inside she sees inside a clear tubular husk. Floating in viscous fluid, there is a human fetus; its soft skull already growing around the brain-jack. "this is the very essence of the second renaissance. bless all forms of intelligence." the voice said as its narration ends. the scene changes back to the white room as both Carrie and verna were standing there while verna resumes speaking to Carrie about the matrix "what is the matrix? control... the matrix is a computer generated dreamworld built to keep us under control, in order to change a human being... into this." verna finished speaking while showing Carrie a Duracell battery in her hand.
carrie shook her head in disbelief and confusion "so... the world i knew... is just a computer program?" carrie asked. verna nodded her head "i never said it would be easy, i said it would be the truth." verna said. "if what you're saying is true then how am i able to use telekinesis in this... matrix as you call it? why is this happening to me? why am i here? why me!?" carrie asked demanding for answers. verna smiled softly at carrie "because you're special, you inherited this gift from your father, your biological father... you are the child of the one." verna answered. carrie looked confused "child of the one? what does that mean?" carrie asked. verna chuckled slightly "it means that you are the daughter of the one, a man named neo. but he was not the first... it was said that when the matrix was first built, there was a man born inside... he had the ability to change whatever he wanted... to remake the matrix as he saw fit." verna explains as carrie stood there listening to verna explain everything to her, verna continues explaining "it was he who freed the first of us... taught us the truth." verna said before turning her face towards carrie "as long as the matrix exists... the human race can never be freed." verna said with sadness in her voice. carrie was silent as she listens to verna speak. "so what happened to him?" carrie asked. verna shrugged "well, after he died... the oracle prophesied his return... and that his coming would hail the destruction of the matrix... end the war." verna said before continuing on "that was until we learned that the prophecy was a lie... just another form of control, from what we know now is that the matrix was a lot older than previously thought..." verna spoke as she explained what happened 60 years ago. "meaning that humanity was nearly destroyed 5 times, but then 60 years ago, humanity was going to be destroyed again for the 6th time, but then something changed that day." verna said before stopping and looking at carrie, as carrie turns her face towards verna "your father stopped the machines from destroying humanity by going to the machine city and asked for peace in exchange for his life." verna said, until carrie suddenly interrupted her "excuse me but can i leave this... loading program or what ever you call it. i need to be alone." carrie asked . verna nods her head "i understand" verna said before saying "linux, wake her now." verna called out.
To be continued...
to be honest you guys, i don't know much about carrie and how she behaves or feels about the matrix, which is kind of a pain of getting the in and outs of all the mumbo jumbo. so anyway im really glad i added the script from the animatrix episodes "the second renaissance part I-II" i felt it would be much interesting for carrie to learn about the past that humanity knows about how the machine war started out. anyway if you have questions about the story then please leave a comment below and i'll respond to them soon.
