"Wah!" Peri childishly wailed, bursting into the mostly empty mess hall, running towards the nearest table, collapsing into it, burying her head into her arms, and shaking her head in dismay. "It's not fair! It's just not fair!"

After taking a moment to recompose himself from the sudden outburst and upon realizing that he was the only one besides Peri within the mess hall to begin with, Ananias sighed, placed his food down, carefully walked up to his fellow retainer, placed a gentle hand onto one of her shoulders, and asked, "Um, Peri, is everything alright?" He swore to himself under his breath as he shook his head, immediately realizing just how stupid, insensitive, and idiotic the question sounded. Of course something was the matter. Even somebody as bloodthirsty as Peri wouldn't cry herself over nothing. At least SOMETHING had to be wrong to elicit this type of reaction from her.

Luckily for him, Peri didn't seem to notice and simply began hugging Ananias and crying into his chest, the uncontrollable crying and the wetness of Peri's nose and tears making the ordeal a bit more uncomfortable for him as he tried to bear with it and wrap his arms comfortingly around Peri's shoulders. "Oh, Ananias!" Peri sniffed. "No! Everything is not alright! In fact, it's horrible! Mean and horrible!"

Ananias nodded his head slowly. "Oh. Well then, what is it?"

Peri sloppily began to wipe her nose with the back of her hand and wipe away the tears and running mascara from her face with her wrist before answering, "No one wants to play with Peri!"

Ananias' eyes widened in surprise. "W-What?"

Peri nodded. "I know, right?" Peri seemed on the verge of coming to tears again, her lips quivering as she attempted to hold it all in. "Does that mean that nobody actually likes Peri?"

"What?" Ananias asked gently as he tried his best to wipe away some of the wetness in the area of his shirt that Peri had been crying into. "No, of course not. They just probably had other things to do, right? I mean, did you ask them ahead of time and then they just canceled, or did you just ask them out of the blue and all that?"

Peri sniffled a bit. "Well… I guess it kind of was short notice," she admitted.

"Well then, there you go," Ananias said matter-of-factly. "It's not because they don't like you, it's just that they already had plans and had to turn you down. Nothing personal about it."

Peri nodded her head understandingly. "I guess. But what is Peri supposed to do now? Play by herself?" She then let out an excited gasp before grabbing Ananias' shirt again and asking, "Hey, Ananias, can you play with Peri?" She then frowned, realized what she was doing, sheepishly let him go, placed her hands behind her back, and looked down at her feet. "I… I mean, if you're free and all."

Ananias glanced back at his food for a moment before giving her a nonchalant shrug. "Yeah, sure, I'm free."

Peri let out an excited gasp. "Really?" she asked, her eyes lighting up in anticipation.

Ananias nodded. "Yeah. Just let me finish my lunch and I should be good to go."

Peri giggled enthusiastically as she began to jump up and down. "Yay! Ananias is going to play with Peri! Ananias is going to play with Peri!" She then stopped her jumping and said, "Okay! After you're done eating, get your things, grab a horse, and meet me at the castle walls!"

"Hmm?" Ananias said, cocking an eyebrow in surprise. "Why's that?"

Peri's eyes narrowed as she smiled in anticipation. "Because, you silly-billy, you and I are going bandit hunting!"

Ananias' eyes couldn't help but widen upon hearing this. "B-Bandit hunting?"

Peri nodded. "Yep! Those mean and terrible bullies are finally going to get what's coming to them, so they better watch out, because the team of Peri and Ananias are going to be slicing open every single last one of them!"

"H-Hey," Ananias said, "i-isn't there a procedure for this kind of stuff?"

"Huh?" Peri asked, innocently tilting her head to the side in confusion. "What do you mean by that?"

"W-Well, I mean, shouldn't we just be capturing them and putting them under trial or something?"

Peri shook her head. "Nope! We retainers have certain benefits, you know! If we're looking for people like those wanted bandits, then we can just kill them on the spot! Isn't that great?"

Ananias grimaced, though with his lack of ability to emote, to Peri, it didn't really look like much of anything, or, at least, not anything that Peri would've noticed. "Well, that's definitely convenient, I'll give it that," he muttered.

"I know, right?" Peri gushed. "To be able to kill without all of that boring stuff getting in the way, isn't be a retainer the best?"

"Well," Ananias said, awkwardly rubbing the back of his neck, "I suppose if one's a retainer, a question of if it's for the wrong reasons is sort of out of the question, huh? And if they're wanted, then I guess no one would really object to it."

Peri playfully punched him in the arm and giggled. "Now you're getting it!"

"Um, but you know what?" Ananias asked nervously. "Why don't instead of both of us slicing them open, why don't I just… help you in slicing them open instead? More fun for you, right?"

"Hmm?" Peri asked. "But why would Peri hog all of the fun to herself?" She smiled and locked her arm around one of Ananias'. "Ananias is Peri's friend, and he's playing too, so it's only fair that Peri share some of the victims with him!"

Ananias awkwardly laughed. "Well… can't argue with that logic, right?"

Peri nodded happily. "Right!" She then began to ruffle up Ananias' hair. "Just think. This red hair of yours is going to get even redder!"

Ananias laughed weakly. "I'd rather it didn't. All that blood… it be a bit of a pain to wash out, you know?"

Peri laughed. "Oh, Ananias! You can be so funny!" She then let go of his arm and skipped towards the door. "Okay, see you soon!" She then glanced back at the lunch that had been sitting at his table and added, "And after we're done, Peri will make you something extra special to eat for dinner!"

Ananias shook his head as he attempted to wave her proposal off. "T-That's alright. You… you don't have to."

Peri pouted. "But Peri wants to!" she insisted. She smiled. "It'll be Peri's treat, to thank you for playing with her! Now finish up your lunch and I'll see you in a bit!"

It was then that she finally left Ananias alone, alone to stare at his lunch for a bit before letting out a nauseated groan and muttering, "I think it'll be smarter just to skip it. I don't exactly want to go losing it later on."
