"Ta-da!" Peri cried as she presented Ananias with his specially made breakfast for the day, fresh from the oven.

Ananias looked down at the treat and let out an impressed grunt. "A strudel this time, huh?"

Peri nodded proudly. "Yep! And guess what flavor it is!"

Ananias let out an awkward chuckle as he carefully began to cut into it. "Is it strawberry flavored?"

When he saw the redness inside the sweet, he could've sworn that he had guessed right, but much to his surprise, Peri shook her head and said, "Nope! It's raspberry!"

Ananias cocked an eyebrow at this. "Raspberry?" He then stabbed a fork into it and took a bite. "Ah," he said, nodding his head as he continued to chew, "there it is."

Peri contently watched as Ananias continued to eat away at his plate. "Well?" she asked expectantly as Ananias was just about to finish his plate. "What do ya think?"

Ananias wiped his mouth and gave her the thumbs up. "It's great. You know, to be honest, when I first met you, I never would've taken you for the cooking or baking type, but you're really good at it. Did you ever consider being a chef once?"

Peri giggled and blushed before shaking her head and saying, "Afraid not. Slicing and dicing has always been Peri's favorite pasttime. Cooking meals and baking treats just happened to involve a lot of that."

"Sure," Ananias said, giving her an understanding nod, "but that still doesn't explain your mastery of the palate and technique of it all. I mean," he nonchalantly shrugged, "slicing and dicing are important to cooking and baking, sure, but it's all just be one big mess without all of the technical knowhow, you know?"

Peri frowned. "I guess." Peri thought long and hard for a moment before suggesting, "Hmm, now that I think about it, maybe it was all because of my mother."

"Your mother?"

Peri nodded. "Uh-huh." She smiled fondly. "Back when she was alive, she'd bake and cook all kinds of yummy treats and meals. Peri just couldn't get enough of them!" Peri's face then noticeably fell. "At least, until that meanie of a servant came in to our lives and took her away from me forever."

Ananias let out a small and surprised gasp before gently asking, "And by 'taking her away from you forever' do you mean that she's still alive, just not around, or...?"

Peri sniffed bitterly and nodded. "Or," she answered.

"O-Oh," Ananias said, averting his head to the side. "S-Sorry for bringing it up then."

"Aw, don't be sorry," Peri cheerfully said. "Ananias couldn't possibly have known otherwise. And if it makes you feel any better, baking and cooking for you makes Peri feel like she's with her mother again."

Ananias' eyes widened in surprise at this. "R-Really?"

Peri nodded. "Uh-huh. My mother used to always try out all of the stuff that I used to bake and cook for her, and in a way, you eating everything Peri makes for you makes Peri feel kind of the same way."

Ananias slightly smirked. "So I'm your mother now, huh?"

Peri nodded innocently. "Yep! Or like my father. Or like the brother that Peri never had. But definitely one of Peri's bestest friends in the whole wide world! Definitely that!" Peri then thought about it a little more. "Um, actually, scratch that!"

Ananias cocked an eyebrow in confusion. "Scratch that?"

Peri nodded. "Uh-huh! Instead of a friend, or a father, or a brother, or a mother, you're most definitely a very special person to me! A person that I want to cook and bake for and hunt bandits with forever and ever!"

Ananias let out a surprised gasp. "N-No offense, Peri, but it kind of sounds like you're a bit... in love with me."

Peri blinked innocently a bit upon hearing this. "Huh?" She took a moment to think the conclusion through before she let out a carefree giggle and nodded. "Yeah! I guess I kind of am!" She grabbed Ananias' arm and snuggled into it. "But how can't I when Ananias is Peri's best and most favorite play mate?"

Ananias gave her a small look of surprise. "I'm your best and favorite playmate? You mean that there are others?"

Peri hummed. "Maybe. But Ananias is definitely the best and most favorite!"

"Because I go along with you every time you want to go bandit hunting?"

Peri shrugged. "Well, that, and," she leaned her head against the arm that she was snuggling with, "maybe it's because Peri feels so much calmer when you're around."

"... Really?"

Peri nodded. "Uh-huh. Peri always feels that she can just be herself around you. And Peri hasn't felt like that in a really, really, REALLY long time." The two of them were silent for a moment before Peri asked, "Say, Ananias?"

"... Yeah?"

"After a while, or once this whole battle is all over, you're going to leave, aren't you?"

"Well," Ananias said, rubbing the back of his neck awkwardly, "it's a little bit more complicated than that, but yeah, that's a pretty safe bet."

Peri tightened her grip on his arm as her face glowered dangerously. "Well, I don't want you to go. I want you to stay here, with me. That way, we could do this every day forever and ever."

"Do you... do you truly mean that?"

Peri nodded before looking up at him angrily. "Of course I do! I'd rather have you die than leave me all alone again! I'll even kill you myself if I have to!"

"Or," Ananias quickly cried, raising his hands up in order to calm his fellow retainer down, "we could just get married so that even if I have to leave, I'll always have a reason to come right on back."

Peri let out a small gasp of surprise. "G-Get married? Really?"

Ananias nodded. "Yeah." He gently placed one of his hands onto one of Peri's arms that had wrapped itself around his own. "You're just full of surprises, you know that? I wouldn't mind being pleasantly surprised like that for the rest of my life."

Peri gasped. "You really mean that?"

Ananias nodded and smiled. "Yeah, I do."

Peri giggled gleefully and began jumping up and down in excitement. "Then yes! Yes! Yes! Let's do it! Let's get married!" She then gasped. "Oh, what flavor should our wedding cake be? It has to be absolutely perfect!"

Ananias simply shrugged. "I don't know. Red velvet?"

Peri gasped. "Oh, definitely! With strawberries and strawberry sauce all over it too!"

Ananias frowned. "Can we cover the cake in vanilla frosting at least?"

"Sure!" Peri giggled. "That way it'd really bring out the redness of the red velvet, the strawberries, and the sauce!"

Ananias let out a relieved sigh. "A compromise. That's a good sign."

Ending: Ananias and Peri

Ananias continued with his humble life as a messenger almost immediately after the war had ended, his home being the only guaranteed place anyone looking for him could find him. Peri eventually learned the difference between right and wrong. It took a while.
