"And then, as if to add insult to injury, they started to pinch my cheeks and swoon over just how cute and adorable I was!" Nyx cried before heaving out a long, drawn out, and frustrated groan as she raked her fingers down her face and rolled her eyes.
Ananias let out an understanding and sympathetic hum as he nodded. "That's gotta feel degrading," he nonchalantly admitted.
"Of course it is! I mean, the standard belittling is one thing, but have I seriously gotten to the point in my life where I am to be constantly swooned and gushed over too?! Have I actually been demoted to baby status now?!" Nyx let out an exasperated sigh. "Honestly, it's times like these that make me wonder just how much more I can take before I finally lose whatever little of my mind that I have left!"
"Well," Ananias said with a shrug, "look on the bright side. If you ever do go crazy, then people would just think that you were a spoiled brat that's just acting out."
Nyx looked to Ananias as if he were crazy. "And just how is that supposed to be the bright side?"
"Because if you went crazy looking like an adult, you'd get real serious adult consequences and people judging you forever. But as a kid? You'd probably just get off with a scolding or a time out at best. Then they'll probably just shake their heads and hope that you'll eventually grow out of it."
"Hmph," Nyx quietly scoffed. "Well, the joke is certainly on them." She slowly laid herself down on the ground so that she was looking up at the clouds. "This 'little girl' isn't growing up anytime soon." She frowned thoughtfully. "Or ever, for all I know."
Ananias nodded. "Must be tough, not knowing how exactly all of this is going to play out and being forced to just wait and see like this."
Nyx chuckled. "Yes, well, isn't that what life is to begin with? Human beings wandering and stumbling through their own great, big mystery? I mean," she lowered her eyes and smiled, "I wouldn't ever in a million years would have believed that I would participate in a war such as this, but here I am, regardless."
"Yeah, I hear you," Ananias said. "For a long time, all I thought I was going to do was mail some letters and packages between friends and family, but here I am, stuck in the middle of another war." Realizing the unfortunate implications of his statement, however, he quickly added, "N-Not that I'm not glad to be here and all, because I am, I'm just saying that -"
Nyx waved him off. "Relax. I know what you meant. But there you go again, referencing events in your life that no one else around here can ever truly understand." She pouted playfully at him. "Come now. I thought that we were friends. When are you going to share your past as I did with you?"
"Okay, one," Ananias calmly and dully said, raising up his index finger as he did, "you never actually chose to tell me what your past was. I had to actively figure it out, and even then, you only admitted that it was true before filling me in on all the details. And two," he then raised his middle finger as well, "I'm not refusing to tell you my story because I've got something to hide. I'm refusing to tell you my backstory because it's so complicated, that there is absolutely no way I can tell you all of it in one sitting without you asking a million different other questions just to wrap your head around it."
Nyx knowingly raised an eyebrow at him. "You mean like you did when you finally found out?"
"That...," Ananias began to say before stopping himself upon realizing that she was right and letting out an exasperated sigh. "Okay, fine, but not today, alright? This conversation was supposed to be your stress reliever, remember?"
Nyx immediately sat up. "Yes, but for a curious mage such as myself, learning new things is a bit of a stress reliever all in itself, correct?"
Ananias let out a small groan. "Then can this conversation also be MY stress reliever?"
Nyx gave him a curious and funny look. "YOUR stress reliever? Honestly, what could you possible be all stressed over about?"
"Lots of things," Ananias answered matter-of-fairly. "Like life, and... the war, and... being the new guy, and... life."
"Hmph. You'd better have a better reason than that half-baked one."
Ananias sighed. "Fine," he grumbled reluctantly. "It's just that... I'm not going to be here around here forever, you know?"
Nyx lowered her eyes as she finally understood just why Ananias had been so reluctant in telling her of his past. "Yes, you've made that quite clear the moment we first met."
"Yeah, well, that hasn't exactly changed yet, you know? I've got other responsibilities out there. Responsibilities that I've got to attend to as soon as possible. And as much as I'm going to miss everyone here, I'm sure everyone would get along pretty well without me here."
"Indeed, that is true," Nyx said. "But do you not have friends here? Do you not plan on visiting them in the future?"
"Of course I would," Ananias softly insisted. "But just because I'm going to visit every once and a while doesn't mean I'm just going to tell everyone my life story, and even if I was, I doubt I'd find much of an excuse to drop by. This place isn't exactly well known in my parts, so it's not like I'm going to be delivering much mail here."
Nyx's face noticeably glowered at this. "I see."
"So, you see," Ananias sheepishly added, "if I'm ever going to tell you all about me, it's gotta be because I've got to have a reason to believe that you're going to be a really important and constant person in my life. I know that sounds harsh, but I don't really see the point otherwise."
"No, I understand," Nyx said. "Really, I do. It was one of the many reasons why I chose not to reveal my past to others as well."
"But you decided to go ahead and admit it to me, didn't you? Because you were so lonely after keeping it a secret for so long, yeah? So won't this be terrible on you?"
"Please," Nyx scoffed, waving his concern away as if it were the most ridiculous thing she had ever heard. "I have been alone for many a year already. What is a few more to someone such as me?"
"That... that doesn't sound reassuring," Ananias softly admitted.
"Yes, but that is the reality," Nyx resolutely said. "And we must all face reality, no matter how unfavorable it may be." At this point, she seemed to be choking and fighting back potential tears. "It's a shame. I am going to miss these little chats of ours." She gave him a small and sad smile. "After you got over your initial curiosity and awkwardness, spending time with you has become the most relaxing part of my day. I will miss them greatly."
"Y-Yeah, I will too."
"That is very nice to hear. I must admit, I was worried that I was sounding a bit too much like a spoiled brat during our time together."
"Well, I mean, you do SOUND like it, but with your whole situation and all, it puts things into perspective." The two of them were uncomfortably silent for a moment, before Ananias nervously gulped, and blurted out, "Oh, what the hey." He then turned towards Nyx and asked, "Nyx, will you marry me?"
Nyx's eyes widened in surprise. "W-What?"
"I just realized... I care about you too much. If I left you all alone, I don't think I'd every stop worrying about you. And something tells me you'd feel the same way about missing me. So why not just get married and just be a part of each other's lives then?"
"W-Well, lots of reasons, really!"
"If you're worried about what other people will say, then just come home with me! It's still rare where I come from, but the manaketes over at my place will make us look a little less conspicuous, you know? And even then, I'm always traveling, so it's not like we're going to be the talk of a town or anything! So what do you say?" He cupped her little hands into his. "Nyx, will you marry me?"
Nyx was flabbergasted for quite a while before letting out a relenting sigh and saying, "Oh, why not? And besides, somebody has got to look after you and make sure you don't overthink yourself o death."
Ananias gave her a relieved smile. "I do do that a lot, don't I?"
Nyx smiled warmly and nodded. "Yes, it's a bit of a problem with you, but with guidance such as mine, you won't have to worry about a thing."
"I'll take your word on that. And I'll make sure that you get carried around any way that you want. Bridal style, piggy back style..."
Nyx poked him in the face with her finger, an amused smirk on her face as she did. "Don't you get cute. I'm far too old for cute."
