"A-Ananias?"
Said man turned around to find a frustrated and embarrassed Charlotte standing before him, her eyes averted to the side with her hands behind her back and an thin, hard frown across her face. "Oh, hey, Charlotte," he greeted. "How are things?"
Charlotte let out a long and rough grunted before giving him an anxious shrug and answering, "Fine, I guess." She then fidgeted nervously for a bit before letting out a violently frustrated groan and said, "Look, Ananias, I... I just came by to apologize, alright?"
Ananias raised an eyebrow in surprise. "Apologize? For what?"
Charlotte let out an exasperated huff as she placed her hands onto her hips. "You know. For calling you a 'hobo' when you really aren't."
"Well, I mean, in a way I kind of am, so..."
"For getting mad at you for thinking that you were rich."
"I'm actually more concerned with how you managed to punch a hole through that brick wall, honestly..."
"For trying to butter you up so that I could court you."
"Well, I mean...," Ananias' eyes then widened in surprise upon truly hearing what Charlotte had just said, "wait, WHAT?!"
Charlotte nodded, embarrassed, while hanging her head and placing her hands sheepishly behind her back. "Yeah... guess you haven't really put two and two together yet," she commented dryly. "Whoops."
Ananias' jaw dropped a bit upon hearing this revelation. "You were trying to court me?!" he cried.
"Shhh!" Charlotte hissed. "Not so loud! I have a reputation to uphold around here!"
"Reputation?!" Ananias cried out incredulously. "Of what? Courting people?!"
Charlotte immediately silenced him with a glare. "Get. A. Grip."
"Charlotte, this isn't something someone can just get a grip over!" Ananias cried.
Much to his surprise, Charlotte quickly grabbed his shirt collar and used it to roughly pull his face towards hers, leer at him, and threateningly hissed, "Ananias, I swear, if you don't start getting a grip right this second then I'm going to give you one for you and then some!" She raised her fist to illustrate her point. "Do I make myself clear?"
Ananias gulped nervously and nodded. "Crystal," he managed to squeak. He then took a moment to fix his collar after Charlotte had roughly let it go before muttering, "I'm still going to tell people though."
Charlotte's nostrils flared in frustration. "Don't you dare!"
Ananias looked at her incredulously. "And what am I supposed to do? Keep quiet while I watch the next sorry sap you try to swindle fall for it like I almost did?"
"Well, I mean, can you?" Charlotte asked weakly.
Ananias gaped at her incredulously before giving her a resounding, "No!" When Charlotte gave him an exasperated look, Ananias, in turn, let out an exasperated sigh, and said, "Give me one good reason why I should!"
"B-Because," Charlotte began, obviously struggling greatly to let the truth out of the bag, "I...," she groaned loudly as she tried to force herself to say it, "I need to do this for my family!"
"..."
"..."
Ananias let out a heavy sigh before running both of his hands through his hair in exasperation and muttering, "Look, I know I'm not exactly the sharpest tool in the shed, but if you expect me to believe -"
"But it's true!" Charlotte cried. "You have to believe me! My family is the greatest family in the whole wide world, but we've always been dirt poor, so ever since I got a job here at the castle I've been trying my best to pay them back as best and as honestly as I can! But I knew that it wouldn't be enough, so I decided to try and court any rich noblemen I could find in the hopes of marrying into money so that I could send even more of it to them, but it would never work with me being who I really am, so I decided to put on a persona to help better my chances, and, well," she indicated towards Ananias defeatedly, "that's when we got here."
Ananias held his chin for a moment, deep in thought, before letting out a relenting sigh and asking, "Do you swear that you're telling the truth about this?"
Charlotte quickly nodded. "Cross my heart, hope to die."
Ananias paced around a bit before shaking his head and letting out a disappointed groan. "I can't believe I'm doing this," he muttered to himself. He then turned to a confused Charlotte and asked, "Why exactly is your family poor?"
Charlotte gave him a funny look before putting her hands onto her hips and answering, "Hmph! And what kind of question is that, exactly? I'll have you know that living in the slums of Nohr doesn't exactly give one many opportunities to leave the poor and lower class! It's sad, but that's just the way it is!"
Ananias nodded understandingly. "Okay, so I'm assuming that you're family's a hardworking one that just doesn't get paid very well, right?"
Charlotte looked at him questionably before nodding her head and answering, "Well, obviously! And what is with all of these questions all of a sudden? Where is all of this going?!"
Ananias sighed. "Look, we've already established that I can't give you, or anyone else for that matter, a loan. I don't have that kind of money on me and I can't ask for that type of money just because I want it. That being said, maybe, just maybe... I can possibly put in a good word for your family with mine and possibly, POSSIBLY convince one of my aunts or cousins to give your parents and family a business deal."
Charlotte let out a small gasp of surprise. "Wait... a business deal?"
"POSSIBLY," Ananias firmly and desperately insisted. "I can't make any promises. But if someone from my family is interested in doing business in Nohr and your family is just as nice and just as hard working as you say they are, then maybe, just maybe, we can set something up that helps everybody. Maybe. I don't exactly know what business we can do in the slums of Nohr, but if anyone can figure it out," Ananias confidently folded his arms and nodded, "it would be one of them."
"No way," Charlotte gasped softly. "No way. No way." It was then that she immediately started screeching and excitedly jumping up and down. "Oh my gods! Oh my gods! Oh my gods!" She then jumped onto him and gave him a great, big hug. "Oh, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you!"
Ananias cringed as he was crushed by Charlotte's strength. "Your, argh, your welcome!" he squeaked. "So as thanks, will you stop trying to court people like you do, or is that just a thing you're going to keep doing no matter what?"
Charlotte gently let him go and ruffled his hair while sticking her tongue out playfully. "Sorry, not a chance! Poor people like me can't get too comfortable!"
Ananias sighed. "Fine. But I'll be interfering if I feel you're going too far with it, alright? Does that sound fair?"
Charlotte groaned. "Fine. But you better not get in the way too much! Otherwise, people will start thinking that WE'RE a couple, and that would just be counterproductive for both of us." She held out her hand to shake. "Deal?"
Ananias sighed before relenting and accepting her offer. "Fine, deal."
Charlotte smiled. "Good." She then went on her merry way, singing, "Oh, what a beautiful day, it is today!"
Ananias sighed and shook his head. "Despite that mutual agreement, I can't help but feel so used."
