The Hero was fighting beautifully.
Their weapon flashed through the air, reflecting off the light of the fires that burned around Falconreach, as they manoeuvred it in all manner of complex forms that would cause serious damage to any other enemy, and they fought with all the passion of someone defending their home.
And they were losing.
For every strike, Sepulchure was more than equal to it, striking back with the Necrotic Sword of Doom or a concentrated blast of Darkness that sent the Hero staggering back before they advanced and attacked again.
The fighting had been pretty much non-stop since the announcement that Sepulchure was on his way, with the Hero leading the main defence on the request of Guardian Kain. The army of the undead seemed endless, and there had been a great loss when the Flying Fortress crashed into the Falconreach Guardian Tower, destroying it, but the heroes and the Guardians still fought to defend their home. The Hero had been fighting with all of the skills that they had been taught over the years, and now with the waves of undead finally dwindling, they had sent their dragon to defend the other side of Falconreach while they confronted Sepulchure.
Inside her cube, Pandora watched the fight anxiously, her panic rising every time the Hero took a blow. They had decided not to fight with their SpiritLooms, but they still kept Pandora's cube close to them and so she could only watch, a feeling of helplessness welling up inside her as they got beaten back.
And then Sepulchure, perhaps tired of this fight, sent a surge of Darkness so powerful that it blasted the Hero back, their weapon flying out of their hand, and they collapsed to the ground with a grunt of pain. Sepulchure made a tutting sound before striding towards where the fallen hero lay slumped on the ground.
The panic in Pandora peaked, everything seeming to play in slow-motion as the DoomKnight approached the Hero; her bonded SoulAlly, one of her only friends, someone she cares for so deeply, almost maternally…
(deep inside her there is a flicker of familiarity at this feeling, but she doesn't know and can't remember why)
…Sepulchure shifts his weapon as if to strike the final blow…
…Inside her cube, Pandora screams, desperate to help her Hero…
…There is a flash of yellow light…
…and Sepulchure trips, one of his feet catching on the other, and he goes careening forwards. Only his quick reflexes stopped him from crashing to the ground, swinging the Necrotic Sword of Doom around and burying it in the ground, catching his momentum. Temper flaring, he snarled as he surged upright to see who dared mess with him, only to be met with the strange sight of a yellow spirit in the form of a woman in a dark dress with rippling hair glaring at him.
Sepulchure bared his teeth, removing his sword from the ground and taking a step forwards. The spirit, her expression cold, raised her hand, which had some strange symbol of two interlocking squares on it, and the ground gave an ominous rumble.
The message was clear; if he took one step further, the consequences would be far more severe than a little embarrassment. No matter, everything was still proceeding according to plan. The Guardian Tower was destroyed and Celestia was dead, with Akriloth having been reunited with his son. His minions have had ample time to break into the bank and steal the Orb of Darkness, and from there he can go on to obtain the rest of the Orbs that the Hero had foolishly kept separated; their allies would be no match for him.
The Hero groaned, the spirit having vanished again, slowly pulling themselves off the ground to settle onto their knees, while a smirk formed on Sepulchure's face as he heard the beating of the wings that heralded the approach of his dracolich. Powerful as they were, the Hero had no chance of defeating him and he would ensure that they would watch as their towns and their friends fell to him before he created the Ultimate Orb to cover the world in darkness.
And nobody; not the Hero, not their World Destroyer and not this spirit that they had somehow allied themselves with, could stop him.
