I held a vote in the server, and Ben 10 won by a fair margin. It was close, ya'll almost Huniepop instead. Yet, fate smiled on ye, and now, I present a story that is not focused on Harem or Smut. Damn...Never thought I'd write one of these again. Oh well, we all need to change and show what we can do. Now, here are some details to know FIRST. I gave Jaune a random, custom list of Aliens, called Set Alpha. This is his first alien set. I will be unlocking Aliens in Sets, not one by one, unless they are a new DNA sample not cataloged into the Omnitrix. Other things to know? Ah, yes. No random transformations or mistaken transformations. When Jaune selects, let's say, Ghostfreak, he will get Ghostfreak, not a random alien. I have other ways to balance things sorta out. Also, no Ultimatrix, not yet. Custom Omnitrix, pairing...To be revealed...Anything else? Ah, yes, the Aliens he has. I will post the list of the Alpha Set at the bottom of this chapter in another Author's note section.
Enjoy! Also, no Discord Link in this chapter. This is merely a test, so.
Every hero needs an end. After a lifetime of fighting, loving, losing, and learning since he was 10, Benjamin Kirby "Ben" Tennyson rested his old, weary bones, laid on his floating bed, and overlooked the endless, vast universe. Although, to him, it was not so extensive anymore. He lived a full life. His son, Kent, has long since taken over as the protector of the universe, inheriting the Omnitrix. He even has his son- Ben's grandson- whom he is training to inherit him further.
This has turned into quite the family business. His wife has long since passed away into the next life. Kai…She gave him quite the earful whenever he acted silly or lazed around. It was strange, really. He often hoped those would end, but now, he wished she'd scold him one last time. Everyone he knew, or most of them at least, were either no more or old, like him. He looked almost like his grandfather now, except for the belly.
Poor Max…He sure lived a long life, but at least he was with their grandmother now. He just knows he was enjoying one of his weird dishes up there in heaven somewhere. Right now, he had little left to do other than to rest his weary bones and enjoy the sights before him. At times, he wished he could fight one last time against who knows what kind of threat, but he knows what is not possible.
One of Azmuth's last words to him was a warning. Years of using the Omnitrix and Master Control took quite a toll on him in old age. Even now, he was connected to an IV with medicine to keep him going, as much as he loathed this. But, alas, there was nothing he could do. Every hero needs an end, and he should be grateful. Not many heroes end up dying from old age.
He sighed. "At least I hope I don't turn into some Ghostfreak reject upon my death."
"That is quite the grim statement, Benjamin." Ben didn't need to turn himself to recognize that voice, as simply hearing him was enough.
The time traveler, Professor Paradox.
"Paradox, it is good to see you," Ben replied as the good Professor went to his side, letting him see the old hero. "How have you been? Haven't seen you in a few years."
"For you, it might have been a few years, old friend, but for me, it has only been a few seconds. You were younger…Much younger." The Professor said, sounding regretful even. "I always disliked this moment in the timeline when you are so close to your final breath."
Hearing him, Ben smiled a bit strangely, and then he asked. "Tell me, Paradox. Just this once. How long?"
The Professor sighed, and then he gave Ben the answer with a straight face. "4, maybe five days if you get more medicine."
"That long, huh?" Ben added, smiling as he heard him. "I don't have long, huh? Know what? I have no regrets. Honestly, I don't even know what I could regret. I am leaving behind a great legacy, and my son is stepping in my footsteps and filling my shoes nicely."
"Are you sure about that, Ben?" Paradox asked him, and as if seeing through thin paper, he continued. "Say it, old friend."
"I wish only one thing, Paradox," Ben replied, then he pressed a button on his bed, which brought forth a box of some kind. "10 years ago, you appeared before me, telling me to do this. You said I would know what it is for when the time comes, but seeing as I am close to dying, I think that time is now, isn't it?"
"Precisely," Paradox replied.
"My last regret…My last wish is that I want to be a hero to someone one last time." Ben said, holding the box in his hands. "This box I am holding…I cannot imagine what Azmuth would say about the technology within. It was easily classified as Level 21 Bio-Technology, maybe even higher. So tell me, Paradox, why did you have me gather the greatest minds of the universe to create a new Omnitrix?"
"Good question, Ben. Why wait ten years as well, when it was finished after only 3?" Paradox began to explain, being as hard to understand as ever. "I guess it is because there is a way for you to be a hero one last time, old friend. Here." Paradox placed a holo-screen before Ben, displaying the images of a certain boy. "This is from an alternate universe."
"Who is this boy?" Ben asked, looking at the screen.
"His name is Jaune Arc. His world is plenty different from ours, as despite being in a similar year as the current one, they never made contact with alien life." Paradox began to explain. "Instead, they have their own issues to deal with."
Sliding the tablet, Ben saw what the nan meant. Grimm, soulless monsters hellbent on destroying life. Racism and inequality between the Humans and Faunus - both races born of the same world. Yet, then he slid over to Jaune's file, which Paradox put together, seeing an irking few details. "Paradox?
The tone Ben took had the time traveler sweat a bit. 'I know…This may not be our first conversation about Remnant."
"He was not even the second choice…Yet, looking over his file, I understand all of this refers to his entire life?" Ben asked, reading.
"A summary of it, yes. Born in a well-known family as the only son of eight children, his father gave him no chance to follow the family legacy and even took measures to keep him away from that life. Yet, he booked it with insufficient training, faked his papers, and later disaster struck. He was not only betrayed when he thought he could trust his partner-"
"Whom, for some reason, you chose as your prime candidate," Ben interjected, yet Paradox simply cleaned his throat.
"A call I see was flawed now. She was unable to adapt to her new abilities, and she was not that much of a team player. Others followed. Each failed in their own right…"
"Paradox, did you even ask for my input on any of them?" At this, the man remained silent. "You didn't. Each time, you just showed up, took this Omnitrix, and left."
"We all make mistakes, Benjamin. But now I have learned. So tell me, what do you think of Jaune?"
"According to his file, the consequences of his transcripts being revealed, which was an act of forgery, nearly forced his father to disown him. The poor boy is all alone without even a home to return to…Yet, it says here he does die a hero."
"One of that world's events to come. He fought to protect civilians, and in the aftermath, the people knew who he was. Yet, he has a good head on his shoulders, a good heart, and the drive to be a hero of the people."
Ben snorted. "Pretty much everything I was not when I first got the Omnitrix. Back then, I was a complete brat who didn't fully grasp the meaning of heroism. The sacrifice. I was doing it for the thrill of just being a hero, like in comic books. Already, Jaune is ten times better than me when I first got the Omnitrix."
"Don't discredit yourself, Ben. You turned out well and matured with age. You learned."
"Yet, Jaune learned in harder ways," Ben added. "His entire world, from what I am reading, is built upon the image of the Huntsmen and Huntresses. Yet…What of this partner of his? Pyrrha Nikos? What is her outcome following his death? Being proven wrong must have been bad for them."
"So you read those parts. Indeed, the aftermath of learning of that shook them all, and once the public learned his story, it caused Huntsmen and Huntresses to be seen like…"
"An over-the-top exclusive club?"
"Ran by a Highbreed"
Ben flinched at that comparison. While not that bad anymore, some Highbreeds still retained some…judgemental tendencies. Then there was the Faunus too, and that entire issue. This was as bad as the Xenophobes on Earth during the early days of opening up to the wide variety of races in the universe.
"There's a lot to be done…" Ben sighed.
"A lot indeed, old friend. It needs something it has not seen in years and has too little of A real hero. A hero with the power to defeat any opponent." Paradox said, and Ben looked at the box once again. "The Omnitrix there, if you deem Jaune worthy, I will take it to him. Set him on the right path."
"Tell me, Paradox…Has such a path even been written yet?" Ben asked, and thankfully, the Professor smiled.
"Where he is a hero and lives a long life? No. This is why we will write it now."
"So we are making a new path yet to be explored," Ben said, holding up the Omnitrix in the box. "Paradox…If this power attracts bad attention to Jaune, what will he do?"
"The right thing to do. I can not speak for him in this regard."
"It is, as you said, Paradox. The boy is a real hero in the making." Ben said, looking again at the screen to see Jaune again. "At his age, I was already world-famous and universally famous. Quite the hassle. At least he has the smarts to keep a low profile better than I did."
"You always did leave the brains to your cousin," Paradox remarked. "So? What is your call?"
Slowly, Ben reached out to Paradox with the box, and the Professor picked it up. "Take it to Jaune. Make sure he becomes a hero his world can rely on, someone they can fall to when times are harsh and give them hope…Give this kid what those brats in Beacon tried to take, Paradox."
"No, Ben…You did." Paradox said, and finally, Ben understood.
"I see…If I said no, nothing would change. My last act as a hero…"
"Is becoming Jaune's hero. I will tell him about you, Ben. The first user of the Omnitrix and the greatest hero of his world." Paradox replied, then he looked at the time. "Time is of the essence, I am afraid. It's sad to think this is possibly the last time we will meet, and the next time I do see you, it will be at your wake."
Ben smiled. "Just make sure Kevin's grandchild doesn't ruin it. That kid has a knack for trouble, just like his grandfather, and didn't inherit anything from his grandmother."
"Will do. Now…Goodbye, Benjamin."
"Goodbye…Old friend."
People used to say that chasing dreams was a waste of time. Most of the time, you cannot reach your dream, no matter how hard you try. And right now, Jaune Arc felt that the most as he sat on the cliff overlooking the Emerald Forest, a bag by his side. He was your average 18-year-old, for the most part. He was tall, blonde, blue eyes, and fairly toned, thanks to the little training for wielding a sword he managed to do. Dressed in jeans, his favorite Pumpkin' Pete hoodie, and his shoes, plus his cheap, trusty armor.
His desire - his dream, to become a Huntsman fell right before him. And as he stood there, he could recall the events leading up to this moment…
When he confessed his secret to Pyrrha, she and the others let Cardin and his lot torment him…
When he saved Cardin in Forever Fall, earning his respect and promise that he'd keep his secret, Pyrrha did not make such a promise. He doesn't know what had her do what she did after so long…Maybe she was thinking if she should do it or not, but yet, if she saw what he did, why did she tell Goodwitch - who had no qualms about hunting him down in Beacon and demanding he clear his room, informing him he was expelled - after so long?
To Jaune, it seemed strange at first. Maybe she was conflicted or having doubts, but then he learned how she told the others. Ruby and Nora tried to reason with the others, but at best, Ruby was busy keeping Yang from getting physical with him, and Ren was busy holding Nora back from preventing him from leaving. They all looked…So disappointed. But worst of all, except for Nora and Ruby, no one showed even a hint of sadness at his departure. If anything, most of them were relieved. The person who was dead last in every way possible in Beacon, gone at last…The one unworthy of becoming a Hero to protect others from the Grimm…
It was NOT his fault!
What did they expect him to do? They do not understand how he grew up, having to watch your older sisters - and one twin sister - receive training your father denied you, despite every ounce of begging he put forth. They cannot understand the sheer jealousy and envy that caused him and how much he just…loathed himself for not doing anything!
His parents even went as far as to prevent him from learning even about aura! You'd think they'd at least let him know of the power that PROTECTS you, but no, apparently, that was too much as well! Anything even remotely Huntsman related…Kept away so that he could be kept away from that. But no one ever asked him WHAT HE WANTED, nor respected it when he said it aloud.
He just grew sick of it - of it all! That is why he ran, got his fake transcripts, and lied to get into Beacon! He just wanted to BE someone, not just another Arc, to be swept aside. He wanted to be like his father, his grandfather, and his great-grandfather, who were all Huntsmen, Heroes, or even soldiers! They all put their lives on the line for others, yet he was not allowed to follow in any of their footsteps!
And now…Now, he was not even welcomed home. His father was very clear on that. He sent back Crocea Mors, but he was not to return with it. The only reason he was not disowned was that he was the only male Arc heir, and if he were disowned, their family name would be lost. Yet, his father did not hold back on telling him what will happen even if he finds a wife and has a child…Taking them away and THEN disowning him. He doesn't know if emotions drove his father or if that was their way of handling this, but Jaune knew a line was crossed when he heard him.
So, he wrote it off under emotions, but that didn't mean the rest was false or said at the moment. Right now, the only things he had to his name were some clothes, a few Lien, his armor, Scroll, and that was about it…Nothing else is to be had. He certainly didn't have enough to head to his sister, Saphron, in Argus.
She always supported his dream to be a hero, as silly as it sounded. Being the eldest, she always watched out for him and even taught him a few moves before their father butted in and forbade her from teaching him anything else. She dropped out of Combat School not long after, much to their father's ire, and even revealed herself to be a Lesbian and introduced her girlfriend to the family.
Shocked? Not quite. The others were. Jaune knew Terra already, having caught them kissing once. He was not bothered by that, nor were his other sisters or mother. But his father was a stubborn and old-fashioned guy, and he didn't accept this. Even to this day, despite having a grandson, he still only visited Saphron and Terra once when their son, Adrian, was born.
Still, he stated that the child was not an official Arc, despite the name.
Now that he had more hindsight, Jaune saw how stubborn his father could be. And how he let old traditions lead him down the path he thought others should follow as well. But what was wrong with being himself? That is something Jaune wanted to know.
Everyone else looked at him with mixed emotions, but no one stayed a second to ask him WHY he did everything. However, he doubted a sob story would change anyone's mind.
"At least you will never judge me, right?" Jaune said as he looked up at the stars. At times, he'd sit down on the grass behind their home and watch the night sky until his mother called him back inside the house. They were just so beautiful and mysterious at the same time. He always wondered if, somewhere, out there, among those stars, other people were doing the same thing, wondering the same things, and hopefully, doing better than he was at the moment.
The stars never judged, just sparkled. It almost reminded him of something his grandfather, from his mother's side, Claus Seraph, used to tell him.
"Jaune, remember this, my boy. The world we live in is a dangerous one, but you cannot afford to be afraid. Whenever you are in doubt and you are lost, do what I always did," His grandfather pointed up. "Look to the stars, Jaune…The answer is always among the stars."
"The stars…" Jaune muttered, hearing the wind pick up around him. "I wonder what answers they gave you, Grandpa Claus…I could really use one right now." As he watched the stars, Jaune wondered where he was going to go now. Vale's cheapest inn was pricey for him, and he could likely afford only one night. The job market isn't friendly either, especially since he had no qualifications.
He was truly lost.
But then, he caught something in his eyes before his thoughts drifted further. "Huh?" He stood up, seeing what looked almost like some kind of star showing up, the beautiful lights seemingly falling toward the earth. "Wow." He said in awe, watching them draw glowing lines upon the night sky. "Is this the answer, Grandpa?"
He looked down, fishing out a small pocket watch given to him by his grandfather…Before his passing almost three years ago. He opened it, revealing the ticking mechanisms made visible thanks to the transparent display it had. It read 1:23 in the morning. Yet, after he took his gaze off the clock, he noticed something strange. "Huh? Is that star getting brighter, or…"
Suddenly, his eyes widened. The star was not getting brighter, but CLOSER. "Shit!"
He swore, running back and grabbing his bag as the star came toward him, illuminating the Emerald Forest below and startling the Grimm as it landed at the cliff, causing it to shake and make Jaune trip. He fell face-first into the grass, aura flaring to prevent any damage. He groaned, rubbing his nose a bit as he looked back, seeing the smoke rising from the side of the cliff.
Hell, that star fell hard! As Jaune went back to the edge, he noted how some of the launch pads seemed to have been damaged, likely some mechanism being ruined from the crash. He peeked over the edge, curiously looking at the crater left. The star seemed to have gone deep into the cliff, creating something akin to a small cave. "Oh, man…" He looked back at the ruined school equipment. "I hope Beacon has insurance." He muttered, then he got up. "Some answer that was, I thought I'd die."
He was about to turn and walk away, but he stopped in his tracks when something glowed in the corner of his eye. A bright green color seemed to be coming from the hole left by the star, further enticing his curious mind, yet now, fear started to creep up as well. The green glow was so…unnatural, and the way it pulsed was just added to it.
"What is that?" He asked quietly, then looked around. He knew this was probably a bad idea, but he had no other idea right now. Slowly, he began to climb down to the small opening, using his aura to touch the still-burning rock that was glowing from the impact. He looked around, face illuminated by the light, and before him, an object revealed itself.
"This is not a star…" Jaune said, taking one small step back. The object before him was anything but a beautiful orb of light - it was some kind of cube with green, pulsating lines running through it. It just pulsed and pulsed there, not doing anything, yet Jaune was being cautious. That is until he noticed something.
There was a bit of dust in the air, kicked up by the crash. Sniffing, he felt his nose start to itch and tickle. "Achoo!" And sure enough, he sneezed, accidentally getting some snot and saliva on the cube. However, as he was rubbing his nose, he heard something. Or rather, someone.
"Genetic material acquired. Match confirmed." Jaune recoiled back as the cube lit up more, no longer beeping.
"The fuck?!" He gasped, and then he watched as the cube began to levitate above the rock. He watched as its corners shifted, rotating once and shifting itself so now it had more of a diamond-like shape, but the corners remained irregular. The middle point then lit up briefly, and the…THING opened up, revealing a hollow, metallic circle of some kind. After that, it remained still, not doing anything else.
"Ummm. Hello? Someone there?" Jaune went closer to it, poking it with his hand on the upper side, but received no reply. He knew he heard it SPEAK before, something about genetic material and matches, but he had no clue what this thing could have meant.
Still, seeing as it didn't do anything else, he began to check it here and there, trying to see if it had anything else. Looking inside and up, same with the lower part, he saw only a slim opening that housed the metallic ring in the center. He couldn't see what was past that, yet he knew he saw more metal of some kind inside.
"What are you?" He asked, and slowly, he approached his left hand to the ring, then through it just to test the waters. Yet, he didn't get the chance to pull it out as the ring closed around his wrist. "Hey! Let go!" He shouted, trying to pry his arm back, but the damn thing was not budging an inch anymore!
"Secured. Starting Protocol Arc."
"What are you even on about? What is - OH MY DUST!" Jaune panicked as the device opened up its panels on its top and bottom halves, revealing a sight to chill his blood. Syringes. Large, filled with some black and white stuff, and closing into his trapped hand. "Stop! STOP! Sto- AHHHHHHHHHH!" Yet, it didn't stop. The syringes dove right into the upper and underside of his wrist, injecting their content right into his body, be it the veins or muscles. Jaune screamed as they made contact, then after one moment, the ring opened, letting him pull back his hand. It went through his clothing even! He recoiled back as the thing collapsed on the ground, closing itself again and returning to its cube-like shape, the green lines becoming orange in color and beeping. Yet, Jaune was not paying much attention to that; instead, he was trying to make his aura stop whatever it was that got in his body!
It burned…It burned through his veins - he could feel it! He felt his heart burn and hurt as whatever substance that was forced into his body reached it, then spread throughout his body, causing him to fall to his knees. It burned and hurt, and as he stood on his knees, gritting his teeth and gripping his chest in pain, he could feel his back start to ache again, and then, sure enough, his head began to feel as if it was splitting open.
"M-make it stop!" He begged, although no one heard him, and he started to roll on the ground, shaking all over. "P-please! I can't- I can't-" His eyes were hurting now too! It was like someone was stabbing him from the back of his ocular globes, trying to force his eyes out of their orbits!
Yet, that was not his biggest concern right now.
"Omnitrix successfully injected!"
The pain began to intensify, and Jaune's muted screams were unheard. His right wrist burned the worst, but as he wrapped his left hand around it, he felt something strange. Looking at it, he saw the same liquid literally coming from his SKIN and wrapping around his wrist.
As he rolled on the ground, he dropped his scroll by accident, and an idea sprung to his head. He still had the emergency number of Beacon's medical staff. Every student received it in order to call for help in case something happened, and right now, Jaune felt like he needed it! So he went to grab his scroll, only for the liquid to engulf it.
"Prime Material Detected! Assimilation Started!"
His scroll was broken down before his eyes, vanishing due to the liquid. His only hope to call for help is gone. Yet, things were not done. Suddenly, the pain shot up in his wrist, but this time, it was like a burning feeling as the liquid seemed to solidify, and before his eyes, he saw it take shape. It was strangely resembling a watch of some kind now.
The band that was wrapped around his wrist was slim, and looked almost like thin cloth, being fully black with a golden line in the center of it, then it seemed to generate multiple golden sections along its length, with small spaces between them. Then, at the top of his wrist, where the pain was the worst, he saw it extend a bit, generating a larger section. The actual watch part was different. The inner ring was golden in color, with white detailing, and it had some kind of white outer ring on top with six small dots where the numbers 12, 6, 10, 8, 2, and 4 would be.
Though, the dot at 12 has a gold line running through it. Finally, there came the face of the clock, which did not resemble a clock AT ALL! Instead, it was black, with a golden hourglass-like symbol in the very center. When it seemed to be done, it then suddenly lit up, and a voice spoke in Jaune's voice.
"Omnitrix fully generated."
"W-what?" The pain was starting to fade away, and Jaune brought his wrist a bit closer to examine the new watch thing on his wrist. "What is this?"
"Objective reached. Self-destruct sequence started." The cube began to beep loudly, and its orange light went off and on quickly. A timer. Yet, despite hearing it, Jaune couldn't move. His body felt numb! His teeth girth themselves as he tried to crawl away, unable to analyze what just happened.
Yet, he had no time to escape.
"Countdown reached 0! Goodbye."
Jaune had no time to react as the explosive rang in his ears. His aura flared to life to protect him, and he was thrown out of the small hole, his aura shattering as he flew in the air. Stunned, afraid, and looking as if the world was moving in slow motion. Yet, strangely, the metallic, masculine voice of the cube was soon replaced by something else.
As he fell, he heard someone else.
"Detected danger! The user's life is in danger! Initiating Emergency Protocols!"
Jaune didn't see it, but as he continued to fall, his consciousness fading, he only saw and felt one thing: A bright white light enveloping him.
"I found his bag!" Yang Xiao Long, the tall, confident brawler of Team RWBY, shouted as she and her team were inspecting the cliffs. The blonde girl with lilac eyes opened the missing boy's bag, looking through it for anything of interest, yet found nothing. "Some clothing, underwear, his onesie…Yup, definitely the Fraud's onesie."
"What was he still doing around Beacon anyway?" Asked Weiss Schnee, the white-haired member of the team. Her icy blue eyes locked onto the bag in her teammate's hands. Although shorter, she considered herself more pristine than most other people at Beacon, something she held now more than ever. Her long hair, tied in a side ponytail, whipped as she turned to the others. "Have you found any other clue?"
"Nothing on my end." Blake Belladonna added, the black-haired and amber-eyed member of their team looking over the cliff. She marveled at the destruction as a good chunk of the cliff, including the platforms, was gone. Her bow twitched as she turned again, hearing a gasp from the side.
"Guys! Look!" And then there was their team leader - 2 years younger than them and the younger sister of Yang. Ruby Rose, the black-haired girl whose hair became crimson toward the tips, watched with anxiety as she spotted something with her silvery eyes. The rest of her team went to her, seeing something else that confused them.
"His armor?" Blake muttered, seeing Jaune's armor on the ground below, surrounded by green, slimy mucus of all things if she were to guess. "What is that stuff?"
"My guess is some substance from some kind of Grimm." And then came the final person there: Glynda Goodwitch, the woman who signed Jaune's expulsion papers. The tall, blonde woman kept herself well in her age as her stern, green eyes failed to falter. "It is not unheard of, and there are several insect-like Grimms that come out at night in the forest, secreting such substances to devour prey. I am afraid he was caught by one."
"But the cliff was supposed to be a safe spot, right?" Ruby asked, turning to the Beacon Professor.
"Well, Miss Rose, we cannot rule out that Mister Arc jumped off his own volition either," Glynda suggested, and the prospect alone sent shivers through them all. "But, seeing as clothing is missing, sans the armor, I highly doubt that. Plus, the scene is too clean…"
"We need to keep looking! What if he is in the Emerald Forest?" Ruby asked, but that was when Weiss interrupted.
"It wouldn't make sense either." She added. "There are stairs leading up here, which he could have used. They are guarded by special turrets that shoot any Grimm coming close."
"Sharp notice, Miss Schnee, which is why this is very odd. As much as I'd like to state otherwise, Headmaster Ozpin has been clear that we are to find Mister Arc, alive or otherwise. The fact his scroll signal went dark last night around this area indicated that something happened, and his scroll was likely destroyed. "
"Do you think whatever spat snot on him also destroyed his scroll?" Yang stated as she looked down at the greenish slime over Jaune's armor. However, as she was looking, something else caught her eye. Same with Ruby.
"Something is shining in that tree!" Ruby shouted, spotting something below. Now, Glynda would have liked to end the search by now, but she couldn't return with vague evidence. Ozpin blew a casket yesterday. Going behind his back to expel a student really irked him, and when she brought up her reasoning, he revealed he knew of the falsified documents. Glynda recalled the last evening well…
"Glynda…You will bring him back." Ozpin's voice was stern and came right after he revealed the knowledge of the boy's documents.
"Headmaster, with all due respect, Mister Arc FORGED his documents. Surely, you already see I let him off easy." She reasoned, trying to appeal to Ozpin's more reasonable side. Yet, the man before her didn't move.
"Criminal charges for forgery? Perhaps, but that in itself is not something that cannot be negotiated given his situation." He countered. "Or ignored."
"Headmaster!" She gasped slightly, stepping back. "H-how can you- His actions led to a potential Huntsman or Huntress being rejected! Surely, you see the consequences of his actions and could have been! You even made him the leader of his team, and-"
"Glynda," Ozpin called out to her again, silencing her. "The reason why I accepted Mister Arc into MY Academy is my own. You may have the authority to expel students, too, without my consent, but that doesn't mean you should not at least consult me first about it. If this was any other offender, I might given you the benefit of believing you have done the right thing, but I cannot do that now."
"But-"
"No buts!" Ozpin interrupted her again. "Bring. Him. Back. I do not care what methods you use, Glynda, as long as Mister Arc is in my care again!"
"Ozpin, for the love of the Gods, why do you care so much about Jaune Arc?" Glynda finally managed to ask, and then she watched the Headmaster lift this mug to his lips, taking a long sip.
"Because I made a promise, Glynda. One I intended to keep. Yet, I fear I might have made another mistake that led me to fail. Now, Mister Arc should still have his scroll, we can track his position, so use that to-" Suddenly, his office shook slightly, and the room illuminated itself, making him stare back into the distance. He saw the cloud rise toward the cliff at the Emerald Forest and the rock being sent everywhere and falling.
Glynda saw it, too, which sent all manner of alarms ringing. "Ozpin, is this h-"
"No. She'd never take such direct methods with no results, and that cliff served no purpose other than launching students." Ozpin said, looking at it. "Next morning, at the first hour, excuse Team RWBY from class and take them to inspect that area." He then went to his terminal to check something. His eyes widened, and his fist clenched. "And look for Jaune Arc…His scroll went dark, but his last location placed him at the cliff."
And now, here she was. The boy's armor and bag were there, but he was not. "Professor?" Ruby Rose called out to her, waiting for her orders.
"We are going down to inspect his armor and the overall scene. Everyone, be on guard; Grimm might be lurking near." And with that, they went down to where Jaune's armor was, with Ruby going to the tree to pick up the strange object.
"Miss Goodwitch, what is this?" She held the strange, circular object to her teacher.
"I…" Glynda looked at it, but suddenly, her eyes narrowed. That was NOT Atlasian tech. Nor Valean, Mistralian, and most definitely not Vacuan. She didn't know what it was. "Let me look at it more closely."
"Here!" Yang shouted as she inspected the slime and armor, finding something inside the chest plate. She pulled it out slowly, bringing out a round object. "Now, this is a strange badge if I ever saw one. Hey, has anyone ever seen this symbol before?" She flashed them the golden hourglass-like symbol.
"It doesn't seem to belong to any organization I know of," Weiss replied, with Blake offering a curious look if anything, but overall, she also drew a blank.
"Let me look at it, Miss Xiao Long," Glynda said, picking it up and inspecting it herself. However, as she did, she could tell it was also mechanical, likely hiding more than it let on. But she saw no buttons, levels, or anything. The edge was smooth, without so much as a wedge. Such craftsmanship was a novelty to her eyes.
"Allow me, Miss Goodwitch." Glynda gave it to Blake slowly. However, as soon as she picked it up, it lit up strangely and let out a small electric shock. 'Ouch!" Blake dropped it to the ground, the symbol on it turning once before it returned to normal, flashing green once.
"It did something!" Ruby shouted, picking up the object next. "Seriously, what is this?"
The last object she was holding was now in Weiss' hands, who was looking over it. She eventually found something akin to a button on it. "A button?" She said softly, attempting to press it, but before she had the chance, she felt it…shake in her hands. "Everyone? Something is going on with this thing!"
"Same with this!" Yang shouted as the badge they found suddenly lit up as well.
"Owwww. My head hurts." Jaune whined as he began to wake up. "What happened…I remember being kicked out of Beacon and then going to the cliff to watch the stars. Then…Did something fall? Was injected? I must have had a crazy dream brought on by stress. Yeah, that's right. Nothing more than a bad dream. I am likely in some cheap inn room, waiting to start the road to a miserable life. Just what I- wait, why can't I feel my legs? Or arms? Or even mouth?!"
Jaune 'looked' at himself, trying to make sense of his new body. He was…all over the ground! "What the heck is this?!" He panicked, trying to get up, yet he couldn't feel his body. However, he did feel something else. Or rather, heard voices.
It was Team RWBY and Miss Goodwitch.
"Hey, I am here! Help me!" He 'shouted,' trying to ask for help. But they just kept talking and picked up two objects. Strangely, he felt…strange as they fiddled around with them. But then it happened. Suddenly, he felt his entire body attracted to the object in Weiss's hands, and before he knew it, the object in Yang's hands was also blinking.
Then the object Weiss was holding went to him and seemed to just…pick Jaune up. All the slime was lifted from the ground, and then he went at Yang, recovering the badge and feeling it attach to his body. Then, his body began to take shape, and limbs formed. He was not breathing, yet he didn't feel the need to. "What?" He covered his 'mouth.' His voice was changed! It was higher-pitched; he barely sounded like himself anymore! Looking at his hands, he noted how they looked all slime-like - no, they WERE made of green slime!
"What?! What is-"
"AHHHHHHHHH!" He turned around sharply, seeing Weiss, of all people, screaming as she saw him, the others wide-eyed at the creature.
"Wait, no, I-"
"Team RWBY, attack!" Glynda ordered, and sure enough, the girls all deployed their weapons and unloaded several Dust rounds into his body; Yang even went in and punched him right in the head, and her fist even went INSIDE HIS HEAD. Yet, as Jaune took a second to asses things, he took notice that he felt no pain. The bullets, and even Yang's punches, didn't hurt.
His entire body was made of green slime…And the slime did not feel pain.
"What is this thing?!" Yang pulled back, disgusted
"I don't know, but we are not letting it escape! Odds are it is what took Jaune Arc!" Goodwitch shouted in reply, and Jaune tried to protest, but before he could, he was forcefully slammed against a tree, his entire body splattering on it.
"Shit! They are not listening! I need to escape!" Realizing he had no odds of getting through to them, Jaune decided to run away from here. The device floating above him rushed forth, and his gelatinous body followed suit, going deeper into the forest. He was almost flying, the device skillfully avoiding the trees.
Ok, he admits. This was cool.
"Get it!" Blake shouted and aimed her weapon at the device, firing multiple shots at it. One managed to hit but didn't cause damage. All it did was cause Jaune to spin around and land roughly, once again splattering on the ground before the device helped him pick himself up.
"Dust…That felt nauseating…" He whined and looked back to see them still giving chase. "Shit!" He once again started to run away, but before he could successfully escape, he felt some force pulling on the device. Glynda's semblance. He tried to have the device escape her grasp, which didn't work.
At best, he wasn't getting any closer to Glynda herself, which was a plus. Still, he HAD to escape somehow! He had to run, hide, figure out what happened to him, and then figure out how to return to normal! But Team RWBY was starting to surround him, leaving him no escape routes.
"The thing above it!" Blake shouted again. "It seems to be connected somehow! Pick it up!"
"Got it!" Ruby shouted and used her semblance to rush at the object, successfully grabbing it. "I got it!" But then she saw all the slime coming to her. "I didn't get it!"
Then, she slammed right into her, making her drop the device. Once free, it once again helped Jaune reform. "Thanks." And then began to run away again. But the same song seemed to repeat as he once again felt the pull from Goodwitch. "Gods…Damn it…"
"Tell us now, who, or WHAT, are you? And where is Jaune Arc?" Glynda asked, but when Jaune tried to answer, something was heard from the woods. Everyone turned their attention to the thick forest. There, coming out in a large group, with red eyes filled with hatred, Jaune saw one of the biggest groups of Grimms he had ever seen.
This was both lucky and unlucky. Fortunate because the Grimm began their attack, and the group of five redirected their attention, allowing him to resume running. He was unfortunate because there was Grimm after him, too!
"Shit! Shit! Shit!" Jaune swore as he ran, but then a Grimm pounced on him from the side, knocking him over. Or it would have, but it just went straight through him. Then Jaune recalled that he was currently made of slime. Stopping, he faced the Grimm, who seemed equally confused at the entire situation. However, something else happened. The badge thing on his chest lit up, blinking green.
"Foreign DNA sample detected. Analysis started"
"Hello?" Jaune looked around, searching for the source of the voice. However, the Grimm made to pounce at him again, but this time, Jaune reacted and put his arms forth. "No!" he shouted, then, to his surprise, his hands shot out at the Grimm, two streams of gooey slime striking the monster in the chest and pinning him to a tree where it seemed to glue him to the bark.
"Woah…" He…Did this? It was so surreal, he couldn't even believe it. Not only he didn't feel any pain, but apparently, he could do more than he thought he could. "Ok…I could get used to this."
And he will need to get used to it quickly, as the Grimm howled, alerting its packmates. Soon after, Jaune watched as multiple beowolves came from the nearby forest, his eyes widening, but for once in his whole life, he was not as afraid anymore. Instead, he 'grinned' and suddenly yanked the trapped Grimm back, separating his arms so that the Grimm was kept in his left, covered in some kind of mace. "Come on!"
The Grimm lunged at him, but Jaune swung his left arm at them and crashed it into the one closest, sending both Grimm away. Another made to lunge for his side, but he twisted his body so that the Grimm went above him, then before it landed, he sent a stretchy double-kick into its abdomen that saw it crash into a tree and UTTERLY SHATTER the trunk. The tree fell, timbers flying everywhere, but to his luck, it also crushed the Grimm that crashed into it to death.
One down, more to go.
Jaune charged at some of the other Grimm, seeing a small group of three beowolves and evading the assault of the first by once again twisting his new body, followed by him coiling around another and reforming, then swinging them like a ragdoll, trapped by his slime, right into its ally, leaving them both in a small crater in the ground formed from the force of impact.
However, the previous beowolf did manage to pounce on him successfully, yet as he made contact with the ground, Jaune felt nothing. His body broke apart and then coiled all over the Grimm, tightening until he felt the bones of the creature strain against the force he was using, but with a final effort around the neck, the Grimm collapsed, limp and starting to fade.
Was this how everyone felt when they killed the Grimm? He felt invincible! The creatures of darkness, which plagued humanity for so long, which he heard about in stories told by his father from his missions - they couldn't land a scratch on him! Technically, they did more than that already, but his body - whatever this state he was in was - made it all easy! Once again, his body reformed, and he looked back at the last few beowolves standing side by side.
Once again, he 'grinned' - hard to say without an actual mouth - and stretched his arm around the fallen tree, lifting it with almost no effort. The Grimm, seeing this, lowered their ears. "Timber!" Jaune shouted as he used the tree to pound the Grimm into the ground, crushing and killing them all. "Ahahaha!" He laughed lightly from the adrenaline pumping through him, looking at the fading Grimm carcasses he - Jaune Arc - left behind. "This is awesome! Although…Can I return to normal?"
"That is the question, is it not?" Turning around sharply, Jaune saw a man standing there with a light smirk on his face. He had grey on the sides, the rest black, and wrinkles on his face. He wore a white lab coat with brown and black pouches and gold trim, and underneath, he had a black turtleneck with a white scarf, his brown vest having gold buttons and pouches. He had a pair of goggles around his neck, a metal gauntlet on his right hand, and a fingerless glove on his left. His black pants had brown kneepads, and he wore a pair of brown boots with gold straps. "Good to see you took to your new abilities well, Jaune Arc."
"Who are you?" Jaune asked, getting himself ready to fight. The man before him sent all kinds of vibes his way, and he was quite on edge. Granted, part of that might be the adrenaline and confusion making him jumpy and paranoid. But to his relief, the man put his hands up.
"Relax, I am not here to do you harm. I am here to give you the answers you need." The man replied, and Jaune relaxed somewhat. The man hummed, looking at him. "Polymorph, huh? Guess I owe some money somewhere."
"Huh?" Jaune replied, confused.
"Ah, don't worry about that. First, however, I think we should get out of this place, don't you agree?" The man suggested, and Jaune had to admit he had a point. The Emerald Forest was not really a welcoming place, and despite assuming the man was a Huntsman, he had doubts about it. First, why wasn't he freaking out about his current appearance like the others did? And how come he claimed to know what was going on?
"And…Where?" Jaune asked slowly, and sure enough, the man smiled back at him gently.
"Give me your hand, Jaune."
"How do you know my name? First of all," Jaune demanded to know, not surprising the man but still making him sigh a bit.
"I understand this is confusing, but all I ask is a bit of trust. Nothing more. If it helps, my name is Paradox. Professor Paradox." Paradox replied, although Jaune tilted his head after hearing his title/name.
"Are you part of Beacon's staff?"
"I am afraid I am not that kind of Professor, my boy. Now, shall we?" Paradox put his hand up, and sure enough, with a bit of hesitation, Jaune took it.
"What is going to-" Suddenly, vertigo washed over Jaune, and before he knew it, he was on his knees and hands, feeling himself ready to vomit. Yet, when he looked down, he noticed he was not on the ground of the Emerald Forest but on a wooden floor. He looked around, seeing that he and Paradox were in some kind of small apartment, seeing a bed, a dresser, and a small chair. This was either a poor apartment or a small room.
"Here we go. Now, how about we start from the top, shall we?" Paradox suggested. "First, I think we should discuss your…situation."
"You…" Jaune got up slowly, his body splitting apart and reforming. "You claimed to know about this. To have answers."
"That I do," Paradox confirmed. "Tell me, Jaune, do you believe in life on other planets?"
"Other planets?" The boy echoed.
"Indeed. You see, your world might be unable to develop the technology to leave your planet, but trust me, my boy, there is a lot more out there than you think." He went to the window, staring out at the stars. "Each of those lights is not just stars, Jaune, but also worlds. Galaxies, far away, filled with intelligent beings like you and I. Even now, you took the form of one such being, called Polymorphs."
"Wait, you mean I am a-"
"Alien. Or at least, you currently are one." The Professor continued. "The universe is fast, Jaune. And in this universe, many individuals exist, both great and horrible. One such great person, despite his grumpy personality, was Azmuth, an alien who created what became the most powerful device in the universe. The Omnitrix."
"Omnitrix…That sounds familiar."
"It has to be!" Paradox never stopped smiling. The boy proved to be relatively sharp. "But I will get to that soon. You see, Jaune, in the past, around a century or so ago, on a planet far, far away, a boy was granted the Omnitrix by mistake. But that mistake turned into something great. He grew into a fine hero, helping others with the power he received, and in time, made friends and allies and learned. His name was sung and praised, and to this day, many respect his memory…Until his very last day. He died of old age, and now, his descendants have taken on the mantle of protectors of the universe in his place."
"I…I don't understand." Jaune said. "This is hard to believe, but I guess I do look like this…"
"Which is a problem."
"Huh?"
"Oh, sorry, another slip. Anyhow, the thing is that in his final ten years of life, Benjamin - this was the first wielder - was tasked by me to create a new Omnitrix. One meant to be used to save this world."
"Save Remnant? From what?" Jaune asked, yet Paradox looked troubled.
"From itself and more." That was all he said. "I am afraid, Jaune, that your world has more issues than I'd like to admit. It is crying for a hero! And now, that burden is on your shoulders."
"I…Wait…You mean to say my state is because of this Omnitrix?" Jaune asked, receiving a nod. "But you said it was a device, or at least, I assume it is. I have nothing!" He looked up at the thing above his head. "Is this the Omnitrix?"
Paradox laughed. "No, that is your Anti-Gravity Projector."
"My, what now?"
"You will learn in a bit. No, Jaune, that is not the Omnitrix." The man pointed his cane at the badge on his chest. "THIS is the Omnitrix. Right now, it resembles a badge, but usually, it resembles a watch of some kind."
"A watch…Wait!" Now he remembered! "But it was injected into me! How can a watch be injected into a person?"
"That is due to the Omnitrix being, at least this version, a bit different. However, the core functions should be mostly the same." The Professor replied.
"And, does this…Omnitrix…only works to turn me into a green slime? Some alien weapon this is…"
Again, the Professor laughed. "It is more than that, Jaune. The Omnitrix is no weapon - it is a device meant to bring the universe together. Ben managed to do it, and Azmuth understood that the device alone could not do it either. It needs a wielder to show the universe what it can do and use its gifts for good. Jaune, the Omnitrix, is a DNA-based wonder. In it are the billions upon billions of DNA samples from countless worlds, galaxies, and beyond! Aliens, which you, as the wielder of the Omnitrix, can turn into and wield their powers anytime you want!"
Jaune remained silent, eyes wide and in awe and shock at the man's words. "I…" And then he threw up, greenish slime splattering on the floor.
The Professor took a small step back to avoid the mess. "It is understandable this might be overwhelming at first. But you need not worry about managing so many samples, Jaune. The Omnitrix has arranged the DNA samples in sets of 10 to make them easier to handle. Even now, your form is merely one from your starting set, chosen randomly."
"But how do I turn back?" Jaune asked, looking at himself. At this, the Professor seemed to tense up a bit.
"Well, about that…You see, Jaune, the Omnitrix never finished registration before you blacked out, and it had to transform you to save you from that ugly fall, so I am afraid you CAN'T use the Omnitrix yet to turn back. That, and there is another issue."
"Namely?!"
"Well, you see, the modified version you have allows you to stay in any alien form for up to 30 minutes each, with the ability to switch between them when you want, albeit, if you switch from one alien form to another, it tends to shorten the time you have transformed. This is not a silly limitation but rather a safety measure. Your DNA gets altered when you transform, and the longer and more you turn, it is strained and damaged. And since you stayed like this for hours…I am not looking forward to what you end up as." Paradox explained, but he saw the panic in Jaune's eyes.
"So I am stuck like this forever?!"
"No, not at all! It happens that I am one of Omnitrix's current Main Admins, so I can simply have it run registration again. Plus, it can fix the genetic damage given a bit of time, hence why I brought you here." Paradox explained.
"Then do it!" Jaune said, rushing the man a bit, which Paradox admitted meant the boy needed to learn a bit of self-control under stress, but he assumed this was warranted impatience.
He cleared his throat. "Omnitrix, voice recognition, Professor Paradox."
"Voice recognized." The symbol on Jaune's chest lit up.
"Re-run registration for the new user, Jaune Arc."
"Understood. Registration protocols began." "The hourglass turned to the side, and suddenly, it flashed red before returning to normal. "Genetic damage detected. For the sake of the data being as accurate as possible, the Omnitrix will return the user, Jaune Arc, to normal and begin DNA repairs using the sample stored in the database."
"Wait a minute, when did it get my DNA?!" Jaune wondered.
"When it was injected in you, obviously." Paradox pointed out, and then Jaune felt strange again. A white light flashed in the room as he began to feel his body again, but when he looked at himself, he found his skin…falling off. "Oh my…"
"What the fuck is this?!" Jaune said in a panic, looking at his hands. It wasn't that his skin was falling off, but rather, his flesh and bones were literally jello! His skin had a sickly green shade to it as well, and his hair an ugly shade of green and yellow. His clothing, luckily, seemed intact.
"This would be the genetic damage I was talking about. Omnitrix, estimated time until DNA repairs are finished."
"5 Hours, 24 Minutes."
"Looks like we have quite a bit of time on our hands," Paradox remarked, and Jaune groaned in his hands as he heard the device. When he lifted them, however, he saw the black stuff on his forearms again, stretching from wrists to elbows, with that strange symbol on them as well, albeit it was red currently. "Well, this does give you some time to talk about things a bit more, including the arrangements."
"Arrangements?" Jaune echoed, looking at the man.
"Jaune, know that I won't hide anything from you, and for this reason, I will tell you two things: 1: I will always be here to guide you and help you as much as I can, but at the same time if I deem you unworthy, I will take the Omnitrix from you. 2: The reason for the more drastic measures I just listed is due to the fact you were not my first choice here on Remnant."
"I was not the first choice?" The boy asked, unimpressed and a bit irked, which the Professor saw, so he cleared his throat.
"N-no, but at the same time, you cannot be worse than the others we tried. You see, Jaune, I am something akin to a time traveler, and I can visit alternate times too."
"Know what?" Jaune said suddenly, inhaling deeply. Even his lungs felt weird. "Normally, I'd say that was crazy talk, but considering everything, I will believe it. So, I assume you went to such parallel times and gave the Omnitrix to others there?"
"Precisely! The first was Pyrrha Nikos, chosen for her excellent performance as a combatant!" Paradox said, which had Jaune mutter an 'of course' under his breath. Yet, he quickly came to realize something. If Pyrrha was the first choice, and he was now being chosen, then that meant she failed. "Unfortunately, she couldn't adapt to using the Omnitrix. Years of training had her rely too much on her set fighting style, and she couldn't adapt to fighting using the abilities of her new forms, not to mention the pressure was quickly getting to her. I was forced to take the Omnitrix and try other choices."
"Was I the second choice?"
"Ahaha…No. We then tried Weiss Schnee, who was manipulated by her father to use her powers for HIS benefit. A big disaster that one. Then Ruby Rose! Mental breakdown. Her sister was never an option. Blake Belladonna was a promising one at first, but she became…too active in her duties and showed slight bias in some regards. Not to mention, her approach to some subjects was flawed. Then we tried Lie Ren, but he believed the presence of his abilities was enough just to make people LISTEN to his words. Words with no weight. Lastly, before you, I tried Ozpin himself! Another disaster, the likes of which you do not want to know about."
"So what? Am I, like, the seventh choice?"
"Some would claim number seven to be a lucky number," Paradox added with a cheeky grin. "But, unfortunately, yes. I didn't bother looking your way due to the initial belief you might be a risk - not to mention unable to carry the burden. In all honesty, that was solely my mistake, which Ben corrected before sending the Omnitrix to you. Truth be told, if I look at his example when he first got the Omnitrix, you are already a better choice."
"I see…" Honestly, it was a bit hurtful to learn he was so down on the list and that he might not have even been considered had Ben not made Paradox fix his mistake. "So, what is your opinion of me, then?"
"Well, that you are a stupid boy who foolishly tried to get into an Academy where people who trained for years barely get in using fake documents, failed miserably, and ended in misery. Now, I know your father did his most damn to prevent any training, but had you waited until you were eighteen and slipped out from his grasp to live on your own, you could have trained then and made it as a Huntsman via training and merit alone! Is it not your duty not to kill the Grimm? Why require something as silly as a license?" The man said, and Jaune could only sigh in response. He wasn't wrong, and in hindsight, if Jaune wanted to be a hero, then he could have just helped people. But…
"The license allows a Huntsman to get paid," Jaune added; Paradox nodded. "One cannot live just with gratitude."
"Hmm. Fair point. I guess they would need to keep track of people they train to be elite killers as well." He reasoned, then nodded. "You make a good point. Now, despite this initial opinion, I took the liberty to peek into other timelines to see what kind of potential you hold. And I must say, I kicked the diamond in the rough. You have the potential and the heart to match. Unlike Pyrrha, you are a blank slate, able to adapt to your new powers easily. Unlike Weiss, no one can manipulate you - well, we will work on that, to be honest - and unlike the others, your only ideal is to help others, regardless of race, age, or social standing. You are also not afraid to use violence where violence is needed, which is another positive aspect."
"I guess? Thanks?" Jaune replied slowly, unsure if he was being insulted or praised there.
"You are welcome. Now, the Omnitrix will run you through its functions by itself and explain to you what you can do and what you can currently turn into. However, I sincerely hope you do not go over the limit again if you can help it." Paradox said.
"N-no worries. I doubt I want to be some green freak that often." Jaune said, looking down at his hands again. But then something hit him. "Wait, what about living arrangements? Do you have a place for us to stay at?"
"Not us, Jaune. You." The man corrected. "I have my little place, somewhere…You wouldn't get it. However, it would be best if you found a way to make dues. For that reason, you may use the Omnitrix; just don't do anything overly illegal or abusive."
"I…I will see what I can do. By the way, where are we?"
"Some random inn. Technically, we shouldn't be here, and I am pretty sure all the noise is making people wonder who is in this room." Paradox said, and no sooner did he do that than there was a knock on the door. "Hmm. It seems I overdid it a little. Hold my hand again, Jaune. I will take us somewhere better."
"Do I have a choice?"
The owner opened the door. "Hey, who the fuck are-"
"Nup," Jaune said and grabbed Paradox's hand, vanishing. The owner of the inn simply stared there, dumbfounded.
"Who the hell? Ah, fuck, someone threw up on the floor!"
