A coming of age story taking place in the years between when he loses Boris and when he meets him again.

Long after the events of The Goldfinch and when there would no longer be consequences of people knowing the truth about the painting or Amsterdam or any other crime, Theo's book is published and released to the public. Not long after, a sequel is published by Boris's son. From Theo's old diaries and some of his own, Jacus tells the story of his father's relationship with Theo.

The chronicles of Theo and Boris: a neverending story! Starts off with some unexpected romantic moments they shared as druggie teens, then cuts to the aftermath of salvaging The Goldfinch and how that looks for their relationship as they journey through adulthood. It was true that Boris could be rather unpredictable, but the two boys had fallen into some resemblance of a routine over the past few months, and Theo had grown to know him as a little bit of an early bird. But today, it takes Theo forever to wake Boris who is red-nosed and feverish. He wished he'd made Boris stay home before he got worse.

One night Theo awakes to find Boris glassy-eyed and mute, sulking by his window. The ever-darkening shadows under his eyes began to tell the story of Boris' dark past, the parts of him that he never intended for Theo to see.
