NOT EDITED
"Lockwood!"
"Sir?"
"Let's Go!"
Dashing up, I yank my jacket from behind my chair as I exit the records room. Pretending to be oblivious to this morning's watcher, I head down and over to the Chief's cruiser.
"Where are we going?"
Swan briefly turns his head to look at me before starting the car.
"Patrol."
"Patrol?" I mirrored. He nodded but I remained baffled. As far as I was aware, I didn't have patrol until 10 am with Deputy Steve, not the Chief at 8 am. It didn't take long before the reason for this schedule change surfaced as an inquiry of some sorts.
"So?" The Chief began.
"So…" I mimicked once more.
When the Chief takes time out of his busy schedule to corner me within the excuse of patrol change inside his cruiser, well shits about to go down. The only thing I can think of from the top of my head is my not-so-lowkey "stalker" problem.
"I- uh… It has come to my attention-" he paused taking his time to think of how to approach the subject at hand, "-that a couple of students from down in La Push have been hanging around and asking about a certain rookie."
"Yup," I nodded. "Been that way since I got back. Well for me anyways, I've heard from Officer Davis that they've been popping in and out a few days after the "incident" not that she knows what happened, but ya knows."
"Oh, mhm, didn't know Davis mentioned that." he mumbled.
"Yeah she said, they kept asking when I'd be back or if I was leaving the force. At one point I heard from Jackson that they even tried to find out my address. But like Mark loves to tell all who will listen, it's like I came with the wind."
"Well to be fair," he nods, "when you moved here there weren't any big trucks driving around, so one moment you were never there and the next here you are."
I guess I really did keep the entire move very quiet, but in my defense I had already bought and moved all my things into town about half a year into the academy. By the time I got the job, everything was already taken care of.
Not to forget, I did compelled the real estate agent to keep quiet about closing an offer for the house I bought. Thank the spirits I did, given how much small towns love to gossip about every new subject that walks through their home.
Either way, the Charlie has been very mindful around me, and as much as I appreciated his concerns and attentiveness, I am never sure how to respond half the time. Especially since I am used to solving my own problems. And then watching said solutions fail spectacularly as Elena and her mystery gang ruin everything. Oh wait. There's no Elena here. But we've gotten off track.
Damn, he really knows how to corner a guy when he needs to. If I didn't know his motives come from a good hearted gesture, I would have accused him of abusing his power by doing a last minute patrol shift.
"Are the kids a bother, Chief? I'm sure they'll stop hanging around eventually. If not, I am more than happy to get them to leave."
"No, uh, no. It's no bother, really. I-uh, I just wanted…"
Poor guy, I didn't mean to give you a crisis. A small smirk managed to grace my face as I watched him fumble around with his words. By the time he noticed me grinning, it had fallen into a warm smile.
"What I meant to say," he started off slowly, "If you want me, us, to deal with them, all you have to do is ask."
"Don't worry about it Charlie. Like I said, they'll either get tired of coming or finally get the guts to come up to me. Whichever comes first, I know I can handle it. If not, I know who to call for back-up, Chief."
He nodded as he processed my words, and I was glad to know he trusted me enough to leave well enough alone, for now. What really helped boost my self confidence even more was the expression on his face. One I could only frame mentally, as the next second, a speeding Honda was running the stop sign. Lights and siren on, we speed after the offender.
It been a while and I know this is short, but I kind of forgot I was writing this chapter and moved onto a different story chapter and lost my train of thought. I had a little bit of trouble finishing this as I had no clue where I left off. But its here now and I hope its okay. Thank you for your patience.
