Hey friends!
This is an OG idea I had and started writing 8 years ago. I recently decided I wanted to finish up all of my old fics I abandoned on my old account on but I am going to be posting them here. I hope that if you are interested that you will want to stick around for the ride 3
Back then, I originally imagined Dylan Obrien as Jay, but it's up to you how you imagine him. I just thought he would have fit the part perfectly lol
The alarm clock seemed louder than normal. Screeching sounds blasted out of it as if they were mocking him for laying there. Reaching over he slams his hand down on the buttons and luckily hits the one that makes it stop. He let's a groan escape him, he really wanted five more minutes, but the waves that crashed onto the shore gave him the motivation he needed to get out of his comfortable bed.
He puts a t-shirt on and heads down the stairs after brushing his teeth. He immediately pours himself a cup of coffee, sips it, and enjoys as the warm taste of perfection goes down his throat. He then makes his way to the backyard which is mainly just beachfront and takes a seat in a lawn chair. He takes in a deep breath of the salty sea air and smiles knowing that this is as good as it gets.
His phone breaks the serenity of his morning but he answers it anyway. "Yeah?"
"I see you're a ray of sunshine this morning." Danny's chipper voice nags and Steve contemplates hanging up. "Hey, I gotta put a rain check on our plans today. Grace is still here."
"Flight delay?" Steve asks and Danny confirms. "You should know I don't mind if Grace comes along."
"I know, and so does Grace, but she woke up with a fever and she needs to rest." Danny explains and Steve understands.
"I'm sorry, Danny." He apologizes. Sickness is never fun. "Tell her I said to feel better." He hangs up a moment later and leans his head against the back of his chair.
The day was still early, and he wanted to get a head start on other things, so he went inside to finish getting dressed. His gun and badge is the last thing he grabs before going back down the stairs. He's reaching for his keys when a knocking noise began coming from his front door. He finishes grabbing his keys, and heads for the door, the knocking remaining persistent.
Opening the door he's surprised to see a teen, roughly seventeen he would guess, standing on his doorstep. "Can I help you?" Steve asks gruffly and the boy looks him up and down.
"Are you Steve McGarrett?" He asks already knowing the answer.
"What's it to you?" Steve watches as the unnamed teen fidgeted before him. He's nervous but he's not letting it show. He appreciates the courage.
"I'm here about Shelburne." The words are barely out of his mouth when Steve becomes defensive. He takes his shirt in his fists and drags him inside.
"What the hell do you want with Shelburne?" Steve asks dangerously and low.
The teen didn't falter under his outburst and it piqued his interest in him. "I'm looking for it. Them, he, her." The boy answers and Steve tightens his grip.
"Why?" Steve demands. "Why are you looking into Shelburne?"
"Because I think whoever Shelburne is needs our help. I think they may be in danger." The kid spats and Steve realizes he's a feisty one. Reminds him a bit of himself. "And I believe it's our fault."
"How would it be our fault?" Steve asks. "I don't even know you!"
"We've both been looking into Shelburne, apparently my research has been more successful, and not so great people have been following it." He stared at Steve, a look he had seen before, but he currently couldn't place it.
Steve kicks the door closed behind him and then roughly pins the teen against the wall. "You have no business looking into Shelburne. Why have you been snooping?" He was becoming a bit impatient even though his questions were being answered. That was his hot headed tendency coming out of him.
"On the contrary, Steven, I have every right to look into Shelburne." The teen gets angry back. "You think I haven't researched you, too? Lieutenant Commander Steve McGarrett, once a SEAL, and now the leader of the 5-0 task force. I hear your methods are a bit unorthodox." Steve shoves him into the wall harder and he notices the wince the kid tries his best to hide. "If I was a threat, do you really think that I would have knocked on your door?"
"You could be trying to trick me." Steve responds dryly with anger in his voice.
The teen tries to wiggle out of Steve's grasp but he can't get free. "Look, if you don't want to accept my help, or help me help Shelburne, then I'll just leave." He suggests and Steve glares at him before letting go.
The kid sidesteps Steve and walks for the door. "I didn't say you could leave." Steve takes a big step backwards and blocks the door. He accepts the annoyed look he receives in return. "Tell me what you know and maybe I can help." He crosses his arms over his chest and doesn't budge from in front of the door.
The kid stares daggers into him. "That was a quick change up." He says. "Can I grab my stuff?"
Steve hesitates but agrees. He moves from in front of the door by stepping to the side. The kid exits and Steve follows him to be sure he doesn't run, and even if he tried, Steve knew he was faster. He walks to a bush not too far from the front door and leans down to grab a drawstring bag. "Huh." Steve thought to himself.
"Are you going to just stand there brooding?" He asks and Steve continues to glare at him.
His posture is tall and tense. "If I even think you are lying to me..."
"What, big guy?" He says quickly. "You going to arrest me? On what cause?" Steve grits his teeth.
"We do this my way." Steve says sternly and Jay nods.
"Whatever you say, boss." The teen quips and Steve tells him to not call him that. "My bad...boss." Steve's glare intensifies further. "Ok, ok, I'm sorry."
They walk back to the house. Steve makes the kid lead the way. "What's your name?"
"It's Jace." The now named teen answers. "But I prefer to be called Jay."
Steve directs him to the living room and Jay plops down on the couch. Steve rolls his eyes so that Jay doesn't notice. The kid rummages his bag and pulls out an average sized laptop. He opens it and pulls out a charger.
"Plug in?" He looks at Steve and asks. Steve takes the chord and plugs it into the wall outlet behind the couch. "So everything I've researched and found is on here." Jay explains as he powers it on and types in a very long password.
"Bit paranoid?" Steve dead pans and Jay looks at him quizzically.
"Should I not be? Do you know how dangerous this stuff is?" Jay defends himself. "You should be more paranoid."
"I think I'm already well covered in the category." He walks to the door and locks it. "Just in case." Steve says.
For every file Jay had to open, he had to type in a long password, and as much as it annoyed Steve, he found it amusing. This kid really wanted to be sure the average Joe couldn't get into them. "I've been looking for Shelburne for roughly a year now." Jay explains and Steve stands there listening. "At first it was hit and miss, but then you began looking too, and your research answered some of the questions I couldn't answer myself." He explained in detail everything he found.
"How did you get pictures of the champ box?" Steve asks annoyed.
"Calm down, we're on the same side here." Jay says with sarcasm in his voice. "When it was stolen, I hadn't been on the island for that long, I had found a girl and she agreed to help me. She would bring me the items and then I'd have her deliver them to you after looking at them." Steve noticed the change in his expression. "The ex Governor had her killed because she thought she was close to figuring out her secret."
"The governor had a lot of people killed." Steve said with a coldness in his voice and Jay nodded. "Surprised she didn't order a hit on you."
"She didn't know about me." He explains unfazed. "Your dad's champ box answered some questions when I first began my research. It lead me to discovering who Wo Fat is, I learned to avoid him very early on once I realized he didn't work for the Governor, she worked for him." Jay scrolled further down quickly reading his notes. "Your dad's investigation led to the Governor's corruption which in turn led to me figuring out what Wo Fat was after."
"Shelburne." Steve added at the end.
"I'm not sure as to why, though, and I figured if we could work together that maybe we could figure it out." Jay said as he stood.
"Tell me, how does a kid your age know so much about this? How did you find out about Shelburne?" Steve inquired. "Shouldn't you be in school?"
"With all due respect, Commander, I'd like to keep that to myself." Jay answers. "Y'know, for safety reasons." He folds his arms and tries to match Steve's stance.
"Safety reasons?" Steve smirks, "Jay, what's your last name?"
"I don't really see how that is important, but again, safety reasons." Jay stated. He could clearly see where this conversation was going. "Not all people are your enemy, Steve."
"I can't trust someone I just met, especially when it has to do with Shelburne, but I'm sure you can understand." Steve's voice became more gruff and stern.
"If you need answers, then fine, I can give you answers. However, keeping my identity on the down low is the only reason I've not had a hitman assigned to me yet." Jay tells him. "As for trusting someone, I'm sure you can understand that I trust you as far as I could throw you, which I doubt would be very far." He looks Steve in the eyes and Steve holds back the smile that wants to form at the comment.
"Would you like something to drink?" Steve randomly offers and Jay immediately declines.
"No, I'm good." He says, "So Shelburne, obviously has to be a codename, but I can't figure out for what or who. Where are you going?"
"I'm thirsty." Steve tells him and continues to walk toward the kitchen. He hears the kid let out a huff of frustration and he felt the same way. He secretly walks back over to the door way, snaps a picture of Jay, and then grabs a beer out of the refrigerator.
"You good now?" Jay deadpans and Steve gives him an obvious eye roll this time. "Real mature." Jay says before continuing. "I think I have an idea of what Shelburne could be though. When I was a kid, maybe two years old, my mom put me in foster care, and then not long after my mom was taken from me. I moved around a lot due to my adoptive father being in the military. Once I was old enough, I began asking questions my dad wouldn't give me answers to, and so I began researching. Everything led back to one name, Shelburne."
"You think Shelburne killed your mom?" Steve asks confused. Nothing about Shelburne made sense and now it was making even less sense.
"I think Shelburne was definitely involved." Jay says in confidence.
"Why would a seventeen year old kid have so much information about something like this?" Steve asks.
"First of all, I'm eighteen, and because," Jay tells him, "like you, I like answers. Your dad was murdered and your mom exploded."
"Watch your mouth." Steve scolds and Jay ignores him.
"What I'm trying to tell you is that both of our parents deaths lead back to Shelburne. I don't think that is coincidence." Jay's phone starts to ring and he pulls it from his pocket. "Excuse me." He says and walks out of the room.
Steve stood there listening intently but he could only pick up bits and pieces of the conversation. Jay walked back into the living room a moment later when Steve's phone starts to ring. He pulls his phone out of his pocket and sees that Joe White is the one calling. "Excuse me." He smirks and exits to the room.
"Yeah?" Steve answers.
"Meet me at Kamekona's." He doesn't even ask. "There's someone I'd like you to meet."
"Joe, this really isn't a great time." Steve argues but he could tell Joe wasn't asking.
"It's not a request." Joe informs him. "I'll see you at Kamekona's."
Joe hung up before Steve could argue it any further. A deep sigh escapes him, Joe may have his upmost respect and loyalty, but he could really drive Steve nuts. He renters the living room and Jay has his stuff packed.
"I gotta g-" Jay tries to tell him he has to go but Steve cuts him off.
"Oh no, you're not leaving my sight." Steve interrupts.
"Seriously," Jay huffs, "I'll be back." He turns to leave but is stopped.
"Sit down." Steve attempts to order but it doesn't work.
"Excuse me?" He says turning back around. "You have no authority over me." Jay is clearly annoyed.
"You have five seconds before I make you." Steve counters and Jay looks at him contemplating his best options.
"Look, Super Seal, I am leaving and that is final. I can't stay, I seriously have something I have to care of." He turns and tries to leave again.
"And you're seriously going to regret choosing the hard way." Steve says just before he tackles Jay to the floor. Jay hollers as Steve zip ties his hands behind his back. "I told you to have a seat but you didn't want to listen. Don't say I didn't warn you." Steve hauls Jay off of the floor and forces him to take a seat on the couch.
"Are you insane?" Jay yells. "I am not about to be your hostage. Isn't this against police code?" He tries to fight against the zip ties but they don't budge.
"You should have listened." Steve is looking down at him. "I'm not done talking to you yet."
"I told you I have something I've got to do!" Jay responds, still angry.
"As a matter of fact, so do I." Steve tells him. "And you are coming with me."
"I am absolutely NOT coming with you." Jay is still struggling to free himself.
"You don't have a choice." Steve grabs his arm and pulls him to his feet. "Now, I'm going to remove the zip ties, but if you try to run, they go right back on. Got it?"
"Trust me, I really don't feel like having your big ass tackle me again." Jay smarts off and feels as the restraints are cut off.
"Good, now walk." Steve orders and Jay has no other choice but to listen.
So, hopefully I've caught your attention :3
