Chapter 1

Things One Don't Want to Hear

Emmett

I was lying around on the sofa watching a football game. Anyway, my eyes were on the flat screen, but I was actually listening to what the others were doing in the house. It was four in the morning, but of course we were all awake.

Upstairs I could hear Carlisle just putting a heavy old tome on one of his shelves and taking out the next book. Esmé was in the room with him. She said nothing, probably reading as well. Music could be heard from another room upstairs. It was so loud that a human probably would not have been able to hear the other sounds coming from that room. But we weren't human, so we all heard the soft suppressed moans of Alice, my sweet annoying and crazy little sister, and the lustful murmurs of Jasper, my brother.

Oh God, no one really wanted to hear that.

I was about to say something when I heard Rose speak, sitting next to me on the sofa.

"Alice! Jasper! Get a grip on yourselves!"

In fact, it got quieter upstairs again.

"Thank you, Rosie," I said, giving her a kiss.

She was only half watching the game on TV and, like me, was probably in deep thought.

"Is Edward actually staying overnight with this ... with Bella again?" she asked with a slightly bitchy undertone.

"Yeah, I guess so. What's your problem with her, she's nice enough," I said in Bella's defense.

I really didn't know what Rose's problem was with Bella.

"Why can't he at least be with his family at night. They don't even have sex. He just watches her sleep! What an idiot."

"Rose, just let it go. He loves her and that's it," I said in a calm tone.

Yes, he loved her more than anything, as he had told me. That's why I had quickly locked my little crush on this girl in a drawer far, far back in my mind. I knew he loved her more than I did - and I loved Rose.

I looked at Rose.

She was beautiful with her soft golden blonde hair, her black eyes and - not to forget - the sexy curves of her so hot body. Lust overcame me like thirst when you smell fresh blood.

I took her by the wrist and yanked her outside into the woods.

Unlike Alice and Jasper, we were usually a little louder and wilder when we did this, so we usually went to the empty forester's lodge a few miles from our house for this.

When she noticed my mood, she was immediately in the same.

She loved IT as much as I did.
