Chapter 9
Aaron
"I've already spoken to my best private investigator, J. Jenks about your wife and her family. I told him to go back as far as he could to dig up anything they might be hiding. Now, I'll have to tell you, Aaron, with the type of military clearances Bella has, I doubt very seriously if Jenks will find anything on her." Aro explained.
I'd finally been able to retain an attorney to represent me. Aro and Caius were brothers and the owning partners for the Volturi Law Group. Their firm was known in Chicago for being sharks when it came to family law. They have never lost a case and were willing to do just about anything to keep it that way.
"You could have a point. If memory serves me correctly, she enlisted in the Navy shortly after she graduated from high school. She may not have had much time to get into shit like the normal college kid would. But there has to be something your guy can find, right?" I implored.
There had to be at least one thing she had hidden from me. Everybody always has something.
"If she has anything, trust me, Jenks will find it." He nodded with certainty. "Is there anything else you need to tell me about you?" He gave a mirthless laugh. "I don't like surprises, Aaron. If you want to keep me as your counsel, there is nothing you can hide from me. I don't care how dirty it is, I need to know." He demanded.
There wasn't much that scared me, but this guy was the exception. He was too creepy, even for me.
"I've told you everything." I gripped the arm of the chair.
He was starting to piss me off.
"I'll have Jenks do a thorough check on you too." He uncrossed his leg from his relaxed position in the chair and set up straighter. "Let me say this to you now, Mr. Smith. I don't give a flying fuck about you paying me a twenty-thousand-dollar retainer's fee. I have not and will not tolerate my clients hiding information from me, that will blemish this firm's distinction." He pointed his index finger at me. "I will drop your ass quicker than you can say your name before I let that happen. Do. You. Understand. Me?" He said through clenched teeth.
I froze and reigned in the raging beast within that wanted to tear this motherfucker apart, piece by piece.
"Like I said before, I've told you everything. There is nothing else." My nonchalance surprised me. "Is there anything else we need to discuss? If not, I have somewhere else I need to be." I glanced down at my watch.
I couldn't sit in the same place as him any longer.
"Yes, I do have one more question for you." He gave a mocking smile. "Who gave Bella the picture on your wedding day?"
I stared at him unblinking.
Fuck!
I was so caught up trying to get her to not leave I forgot to ask her how she got the damn thing.
Aro threw his head back and cackled. "Looks like you've got some homework of your own."
