Chapter 1: Finding the Red

It was falling. The large red form fell from the blue sky. She watched it carefully. Trying her hardest to guess where it would land. Running towards it she held out her hands. Too late did she realize, she stepped right under the descending ball. The red rubber sphere crashed into her forehead. Eliciting a loud yelp from the girl who proceeded to rub the stinging area.

A howl of laughter erupted further ahead of the girl. "You're supposed to catch it with your hands. Not your face." Cackled the girl's elder sister.

"Yang. Be nice." Chastised the girl's father who watched his girls play while he sat in the grass.

"Yes, Dad," Yang said, feeling slightly guilty for making fun of her sister.

With an irritated groan, the girl hobbled over to where the ball bounced and took it in both hands. Her cheeks puffed, and she hurled the ball as high as she could. Much to her disappointment, it barely reached half the distance as her elder sibling.

The older girl walked up to the ball. Her pretty yellow hair, bound in two pigtails bobbed with each step. "Come on, Ruby. You can do better than that."

Ruby pouted, crossing her arms she looked away. "If I was as strong as you, I'd punch it to the clouds."

Yang laughed and held the ball out. "Ready?"

Ruby quit pouting and focused on the ball. She would catch it this time.

Yang tossed the ball above her head, balled her right hand into a fist, and delivered a hard punch. The ball went flying over Ruby's head and soared into the mass of nearby trees.

Tai laughed. "Little too much force, Firecracker."

Yang blushed in embarrassment. She had meant to hit it straight up. It went horizontal because she acted too late.

Tai stood up and stretched his arms. "Stay here girls. I'll go get it."

He glanced at his eldest daughter and smiled. But when he turned to look at his youngest, he blinked. She was gone.

Both father and daughter yelled out. "Ruby!"

The little girl, wandered through the forest with a frown on her face. Stupid Yang. She was supposed to hit the ball up, not into the trees. It was not fair. But now it was Ruby's turn, she would show Yang how it feels.

She walked thought the forest, avoiding the bushes in a skittish manner. Dad would get angry if she tore her dress.

It did not take her long to find the ball. Planted in the grass. Running over to it she picked it up without a second though. After holding it up she noticed something strange.

The ground in front of her had been torn up. A large trench had been torn up in the dirt, like a bulldozer had gone through. Only this was far bigger. Like a bulldozer with the width of a house.

It stretched to her left and right. It had dug a deep gouge in the soil like an impact crater. Tree trunks were smashed, and branches were scattered everywhere. There were spots of vegetation in the new groove in the earth, so this was recent.

To her left she spotted something at the end of the trail of destruction. Something red.

Her curiosity peeking, she walked towards it. It could be a space rock. Or a spaceship. An infinite number of ideas entered her mind spurring her on to find out what it was and how cool she would be for finding it.

She soon started to regret her choice as the red object was a lot farther away than it looked. But she kept on going. She wanted to be a huntress one day, and huntresses never gave up.

When she got close enough she started to make out a shape. It looked like a gecko's tail. A giant and red gecko's tail.

Ruby walked around it and more of the strange creature's body made itself known to her. Large, scaled claws. A massive body coated in shining ruby scales. Folded leathery wings at its side.

When she made it all the way around, she saw its head. Huge deep brown horns topped its head. Each had a golden bracelet on it, with chains that connected to large jewels.

"Woah. Pretty." Ruby said when she got a full view of the massive creature. It would be pretty scarry if it weren't asleep.

Ruby stared at the big lizard thing. She wondered here she had seen this thing before, it looked familiar.

Ruby then gasped, dropping the ball as she realized what this thing was.

A dragon. It was a dragon. A real dragon, and she found it.

The excitement caused her to start jumping in place. A real dragon. Like from the stories her mom told her. Looking around she wondered where its treasure was. Dragons always had a horde of treasure. The gems on the beast's horns only proved it.

"Ruby!" Came a distant voice, causing her to pause in her revelry.

"Ruby!" The voice came again, it was her dad.

This only got her even more excited, with dad they could take more of the dragon's treasure. Not to mention she could hold this over Yang for finding the dragon first. Ruby Rose treasure hunter and dragon finder.

Ruby broke into a sprint, wanting to get to her dad as quickly as possible. They need to get the treasure before the red dragon wakes up.

"Ruby!" That was Yang's voice. Good. She could rub this in her sister's face as they worked.

Rushing through bushes, she watched Yang jump in fright as they nearly crashed into each other. Taiyang was right behind his eldest daughter. He exhaled a giant sigh of relief at the sight of her.

"Ruby. Don't run off like that. You nearly scared me to death."

Ruby's excitement faded slightly as she looked down in shame. "Sorry."

"It's alright. Now let's find the ball so we can get back to the fun." He reassured her with a smile.

Ruby blinked. The ball? That's right, she ran in here to get the ball. The ball which she left by…

With a gasp she started jumping in place again. "I know here it is! I know where it is!"

"You do?" He asked, planning to encourage her.

"I left it by the dragon!"

Both of the Xaio Longs blinked in confusion at that declaration.

"You found a dragon?" Yang asked.

"Yes! Yes! It's this way!" Ruby said running off again. "Come see!"

Tai and Yang gave chase. Not planning on losing her in the brush. Tai was not concerned with his child's proclamations that she had found a dragon. Until he saw the giant red lizard for himself.

"See! See!" Ruby squealed in delight. "It's a real dragon!"

Tai stared at. He could not he could not believe it. Sleeping here in a crater was an actual dragon. Its scales glittered in the sun, so much so that you would mistake them for gems.

"Oh my gosh!" Yang said also excited. "It looks just like the ones mom told us about, only bigger and prettier."

"Yeah. Now imagine how much treasure we'll find!" Ruby said joining hands with her sister.

"That's right. We'll get so much cool stuff." Yang affirmed her sibling's hypothesis as they jumped together.

"Girls." Tai walked up to them and grabbed their shoulders. "We're leaving."

"What!?" They both exclaimed.

"We're leaving." He insisted.

"But the treasure!" Ruby argued.

"No arguments, Ruby." He retorted, keeping his voice as calm as possible. He scooped her up in his arms. He needed to call Qrow. He didn't know if this was a real dragon or some new kind of Grimm, but he needed to tell Ozpin about this and have him deal with it.

As they walked away from the dragon and strolled amongst the trees. Ruby was quiet. It made sense. The idea of one of her mother's fairytales coming to life was a prospect that she couldn't ignore. But this wasn't a fairytale. That thing was a wild animal and that made it very dangerous. Even more so if it actually had a treasure horde. Stealing would likely enrage the creature and he would never put his daughters at risk like that.

He spotted something among the trees, and he stopped. Something moved again. Something with black fur.

"Dad?" Yang asked, wondering why her father stopped.

"Come here." He said calmly gesturing for her to get closer.

Yang walked into his free arm and was lifted up as well.

"What is it?" Ruby asked.

"Shh." Tai hushed her and slowly backed up to a tree. "I want you girls to climb. Right now. Climb as high as you can and wait for me to come get you. Understand." His voice was low, but the girls did understand he was being serious. "Do not try to climb down."

He lifted them up to the highest branch he could reach. Pushing themselves up, they clung to the tree and climbed higher. When they got to the point where they couldn't reach the next branch they stared down at their father. Worried as to why he got so serious all of a sudden.

They watched as a Beowolf jumped out of the bushed at Tai. He replied with a powerful uppercut that shattered its bone mask. Both girls nearly fell off the branch they were perched on when they saw that.

More Grimm surged towards Tai and he responded with a series of punches and kick that broke limbs and crushed torso's. He jumped between them, avoiding their claws and fangs. One managed to land a swipe on his back but his aura flashed yellow and absorbed the damage for him. Turning he delivered a fearsome right hook to the offender.

"Get em, Dad!" Ruby called out as she watched the fight. This was what she wanted to be. A huntress who fought Grimm. Just like her mother. She might be shaking in her boots right now, but she wasn't going to let that keep her from showing support.

"Knock their lights out, Dad!" Yang cheered.

They continued to cheer him on as he continued to fight. But when the tree suddenly swayed, they stopped. Looking down they saw a Beowolf climbing up to them. Its claws sinking into the bark to use as hooks to secure its rapid ascent.

The two girls screamed as it tried to slash at them. The beat's thrashing shook the tree more, causing Yang to lose her grip. She screamed as she fell. Tai rolled under her and caught her in his arms.

He placed his back against the tree as the rest of the Grimm pack closed in.

Then a new noise could be heard. A noise that gave the Grimm pause. It sounded like the beat of heavy wings.

Ruby screamed from above as she saw what was coming.

The dragon had woken up. The little girl watched as its elongated form rose above the trees in the distance. Its massive wings stretching into a corona. Ruby instantly forgot about the Beowolf as the giant's head turned to look directly at her.

Its jaw opened, revealing a mass of crimson flames within. Ruby screamed as the flames shot from its mouth and bathed the forest in fire.

The red light spread across the greenery, consuming everything.

When it reached her, something amazing happened. The red fire washed over her, she expected it to be hot, but it was comfortably warm. It wasn't hurting her. The Beowolf however, was. The flames ate away at its dark form, reducing it to nothing.

The rest of the pack had no better luck. As the fire drowned the forest like a flood, the pack was burned away. Tai and Yang watched the fire in awe as it washed over them too. Tai noted that the fires relieved him of some of the fatigue he racked up during the fight.

Ruby stared directly at the dragon. She realized that it was helping them. It wasn't a mean dragon. It was nice.

When the fires went out, she stared at the creature with a silly smile on her face. She wanted to thank it, but her smile changed to a concerned frown as she watched the dragon begin to diminish in size. It was getting smaller. Within moments she lost it in the trees.

Tai stared at the surrounding forest in shock. Nothing was burnt, nothing but the Grimm. In fact the forest somehow looked more alive than it did before the firestorm.

Refocusing he addressed the little girl in his arms. "You alright, Firecracker."

Yang nodded quietly, as she held on to him. Looking up he called out to his other daughter. "Ruby! Are you alright?"

"Dad!" She answered. "The dragon!"

Tai felt his blood freeze. Did that monster wake up? If so, they needed to run. Get as far away as they could. He couldn't fight a monster like that by himself, even if he could, he left his weapons back at the house. He was about to call his daughter, but she spoke up first.

"It's shrinking!"

Tai stopped his worried thoughts. Shrinking? Did dragons shrink?

Putting Yang down he called to Ruby. "Stay put, I'm coming up."

He quickly ascended the branches and reached the top. With one arms outstretched he beckoned her to her him. "Dad. The dragon helped us." She said climbing into his arm.

"Don't be silly, Ruby. It's a monster, remember the stories your mom told you. Dragons are mean and greedy, taking other peoples' money for themselves."

"But this one is nice. I saw it help us with the fire."

Tai climbed down with some skepticism. He didn't entirely disagree with her. If she was wrong the dragon's fire would have scorched the entire forest by now.

"We have to go and thank it." Ruby insisted.

"Ruby."

"It's a nice dragon. It helped us. We should say thank you." She would not quit.

Tai wanted to argue more, even invoking his fatherly authority to demand she stop. But he wasn't certain she was in the wrong. She was acting on the morals Summer had instilled within her. That alone made it hard for him to argue. To argue against the morality of his child was like arguing with his late wife. He just didn't have the stomach for it.

They returned to the site where they found the sleeping behemoth. Tai walked out of the foliage first. He was not going to put his girls in a dangerous situation if he could avoid it. He mentally kicked himself for even agreeing to this. Raven was right, he was too soft.

Outside the now empty crater were two sets of gouges in the soil, like giant four fingered hands had dug into them.

He approached the crater and stared inside. At the bottom he spied the body of a person. A woman.

Jumping down he landed at her side. She was face down in the dirt. He carefully turned her over to get a good look at her.

He had to admit, she was quite beautiful. She had a stunning figure, long crimson hair, wore some form of strange scale like body armor. It fit her well. But what stood out were the horns on her head and the strangely long ears. At first he thought she was a Faunus, but that would make no sense. A Faunus only has one animal trait. The extremes varied from person to person, but it was always of one particular animal per individual. She had two. Long ears and horns. The ears could be explained away, a bat Faunus usual has those, but the horns. They looked awfully similar to those of the dragon he saw. They were covered covered in the same jewelry.

He picked her up, bridal style and began to climb out of the crater.

When he reached the to, the girls ran out of the bushes to see the lady.

"Wow. She's so pretty." Yang said as she got a close up of the woman's face.

"Is she a princess?" Ruby asked excitedly. "Mom said dragons kidnap princesses."

"I'm not sure, Ruby." Tai answered as honestly as he could.

"What are we going to do, Dad?" Yang asked.

Tai thought for a moment. There were a lot of questions going through his mind. This woman was not normal. He'd been around more than enough of Ozpin's nonsense to know that something was afoot. This whole mess had the smell of magic about it. For a moment he considered calling Qrow but decided against it. If this was connected to him then he would make the call, but he didn't feel like dragging another person into that nightmare if he could help it.

"We're taking her home with us."
