Chapter 8
The Fellowship headed down the left-hand passage, and soon they came to an open space.
"Let me risk a little more light." Gandalf said as he illuminated his staff, lighting up a huge hall of stone lined with taller pillars and arched ceilings as far as the eye could see.
All of the members of the fellowship looked around in awe.
"Behold! The great realm and Dwarf-city of Dwarrowdelf." Gandalf said, looking back at them.
"Now there's an eye opener, and no mistake." Sam blinked a few times.
The fellowship walked through the hall.
Gimli saw a ray of sunlight shining through the Chamber of Mazarbul. "Oh!" Gimli began to rush forward.
"Gimli!"
Gimli paid no heed to what Gandalf said, but ran into the chamber. He stopped and kneeled by a crypt and started to sob. "No! Oh, no. Noooo!"
Boromir slowly moved away from Theolynn and moved towards Gimli and put his hand on his shoulder.
Gandalf stopped next to Gimli and translated the runes on the tomb. ""Here lies Balin, son of Fundin, Lord of Moria." He is dead, then. It's as I feared." Gandalf handed his staff and hat to Pippin, bent down, and took from the grasp of a dead dwarf a very large, battered and very old book. He opened it and cleared the dirt from its pages.
Legolas looked around the chamber and turned to Aragorn. "We must move on, we cannot linger!"
""They have taken the bridge, and the second hall. We have barred the gates, but cannot hold them for long. The ground shakes. Drums, drums in the deep." Gandalf turned the page slowly and with caution. "We cannot get out. A Shadow moves in the dark. We cannot get out..They are coming.""
Pippin saw a corpse sitting by a stone well. Curiously, he reached out and carefully touched the arrow. The arrowhead broke off from the rest, causing first the skull to fall.
Gandalf turned to see what happened and so did the others.
Then the body, the chain and bucket went to go over the side of the well falling down right into it. Its noise echoed from hall to hall.
Pippin winced at each new wave of noise.
Then silence went around the room.
The Fellowship began to relax.
Gandalf slammed the book shut. "Fool of a Took! Throw yourself in next time and rid us of your stupidity!" He then grabbed his staff and hat from Pippin, but then, drums echoed up from deep below.
Terror began to creep up on everyone's face.
Sam looked down seeing that Sting had turned blue. "Frodo!"
Foul sounds could be heard from the distance outside of the chamber.
"Orcs!" Legolas shouted.
Boromir rushed to lock the door.
Arrows were shot and he was almost hit in the face with one.
Aragorn dropped his torch and turned to the hobbits. "Get back! Stay close to Gandalf!" Aragorn ran to Boromir and closed the doors.
A troll could be heard from outside.
"They have a cave-troll."
Theolynn's hand carefully went to the handle of her sword well prepared to fight if she needed to.
Legolas tossed spears and axes to Boromir and Aragorn to help blockade the door.
The Fellowship drew their weapons and Gimli lept atop of Balin's tomb and brandished his axe.
"Aarghhh! Let them come! There is one dwarf yet in Moria that still draws breath!"
Orcs began breaking down the door.
Legolas and Aragorn shot at them through the holes in the door.
The orcs finally managed through the door and the battle suddenly began.
Suddenly, a cave troll smashed through the rest of the doors.
Legolas shot an arrow at him, but he just growled.
Sam looked up just to see the troll swinging his mace down at him and he threw himself under the troll's legs just in time.
Legolas kills orcs on the ledge on one wall.
The troll swung his chain at Legolas, who avoided it several times until the troll wrapped it around a pillar by accident.
Leoglas stamped the chain tight and then ran along it onto the troll's head. He shot the troll in the back of it's head and then jumped off.
The battle goes on and Sam hits an orc with his frying pan. "I think I'm getting the hang of this."
Theolynn sliced down orcs with her sword, her long blonde hair whipped around as she killed each one.
"Frodo!" Aragorn yelled for their ring bearer.
The troll continued to seek Frodo who tried to hide behind a pillar. After some hide-and-seek the troll found him and grabbed him.
Frodo fell onto his back into a corner.
The troll lifted him, and he hung dangling from the troll's hand.
"Aragorn! Aragorn!" Frodo cut at the troll's hand with Sting.
The troll dropped Frodo to the ground and growled.
"Frodo!" Aragorn grabbed a spear from the floor and stabbed the troll in the chest.
The troll hit Aragorn and sent him flying across the room. He collapsed to the floor.
Frodo crawled after him and tried to rouse him, but Aragorn is too stunned to move.
Merry and Pippin threw rocks at the troll to no avail.
Frodo began to run, but the troll blocked his way with a spear, throwing him back into the corner.
The troll stabbed Frodo in the chest.
Frodo fell to the floor.
Merry and Pippin let out a cry of agony.
"Frodo? Frodo!" Sam yelled, rushing towards Frodo.
Merry and Pippin leapt onto the troll's head and started to stab at him.
The troll finally grabbed onto Merry, swinging him around and threw him to the ground.
The fellowship redoubled its efforts against the orcs and troll in fury.
Gandalf and Gimli took turns stabbing at the troll and dodging out of range.
Legolas took aim.
Pippin stabbed the troll one more time on the head and the troll opened its mouth.
Legolas shot an arrow into its neck.
The troll moaned and then collapsed to the ground.
Pippin was thrown against the floor and was knocked out.
There was a moment of silence. All the orcs were either dead or had run away.
Aragorn awoken and crawled over to Frodo. "Oh no!" He turned Frodo over.
Frodo gasped for breath.
Sam startled and ran over to them. "He's alive!"
"I'm all right. I'm not hurt."
"You should be dead! That spear would have skewered a wild boar." Aragorn said resting back on his heels, his eyes wide in surprise.
"I think there's more to this hobbit than meets the eye." Gandalf said, looking at Frodo with a knowing look.
Frodo revealed his Mithril shirt.
Sam touched it in wonder.
"Mithril! You are full of surprises Master Baggins." Gimli said, looking at the hobbit.
Orcs could once again be heard down the hall.
"To the bridge of Khazad-Dûm!" Gandalf ordered them.
They ran out the back door of the chamber, pursued by a large army of Orcs.
Other orcs sprung out from the floor or crawled down from the ceiling and down the pillars like spiders. They surrounded the fellowship, who had drawn their weapons once again.
Just then a fiery light appeared at the end of the hall followed by a thunderous growl.
The orcs, scared, fled in a panic in all directions.
The fellowship stared at the light that was headed their way.
"What is this new devilry?" Boromir said with wide eyes.
"A Balrog. A demon of the ancient world. This foe is beyond any of you. Run! Quickly!"
"Oh that's just…" Theolynn shook her head knowing that they needed to move and move quickly.
