When Jade opens her eyes early one Saturday morning, her first thought is of how quiet it is. Usually mornings are never quiet, Liam or Finn is usually up and first light, demanding all of her and Beck's attention. For the first time in forever she's woken up on her own, no alarm or screaming child being the one to pull her from her sleep.
It's odd.
She rolls over, her arms searching for Beck's body to wrap themselves around, but finds the other side of the mattress empty. A bit taken aback by her boyfriend's absence, she sits up and sees that he isn't laying next to her. Finn also isn't in his bassinet beside her, and the door to the bedroom is wide open after she had closed it once she put Liam to bed the night prior. For a moment she's worried that something has happened, that maybe Beck had decided he had enough and ran out on her, but then she hears the pitter-patter of little feet on the floor above her and all of her ridiculous thoughts are clear from her mind.
Jade stretches her arms above her head and stands up from the mattress on the ground, stepping around Liam's toys scattered across the floor as she makes her way to the bathroom. After splashing water on her face and brushing her hair, she heads upstairs to find Beck and the boys.
"Wee woo wee woo..." She hears Liam singsonging as she steps onto the main floor, closing the door behind her
The toddler is crawling across the living room floor, pushing his toy firetruck in front of him as he does so. Beck sits not too far from him with Finn nestled in the crook of one arm, while his free hand holds another one of Liam's toy cars.
"Good morning, sweetheart." Kaitlyn greets her as she passes the kitchen "Enjoy the extra sleep?"
"Sure did." Jade chuckles "I can't remember the last time I just woke up because my body decided it was time, not because an alarm was going off or because a baby was crying."
"Don't get used to it." Kaitlyn smirks
"I won't."
"Coffee, kiddo?" Chris asks, appearing behind his wife
"Maybe in a bit." She shrugs "I need to go say good morning to my boys first."
Chris nods with a smile as Jade makes her way over to the living room. Liam hears her footsteps behind him and turns to see who's approaching, and a huge grin spreads across his face when he realizes that it's her.
"Mama!" He cheers, pushing himself to his feet and toddling over to her
"Good morning, baby." She smiles, picking him up and resting her on her hip "Are you playing cars?"
"Cars!" Liam nods, pointing to the toys on the floor
"That's right!"
"Good morning." Beck greets her, standing up and pressing a kiss to her cheek "Were you able to sleep in?"
"I was." She nods "You should have woken me though. You had a late night too..."
Beck had been working late on a 'Fraturday shoot', as it is known to many in the industry. They had been filming an outdoor scene set at night, so they obviously had to wait until the sun went down to begin working. They started late on Friday night and worked well into early Saturday morning, earning the term 'Fraturday'. As compensation for their odd working hours, the cast and crew had been given Saturday off.
Beck had arrived home just after three in the morning, and much to his surprise Jade was still awake when he did. She had been on a roll with an idea for the finale script and didn't want to risk losing any of her thoughts or motivation by going to sleep. She hadn't gotten to bed until almost an hour after Beck had, which is why he felt that he should let her sleep in a bit.
"I almost never get to have lazy Saturday mornings with them..." Beck reminds her as he bounces Finn gently in his arms "I'm usually working."
"Fair enough..." She smirks, setting Liam down on the floor to continue playing and opening her arms to take Finn "Have you guys had breakfast?"
"Liam has." Beck tells her "Finn and I thought we'd wait for you."
"That's very sweet of you." Jade laughs "And I'm sure it has nothing to do with the fact that I'm the only person who can feed Finn."
Granted, now that he goes to daycare almost all day most weekdays, she has had to start pumping for him more than she ever did for Liam. They always have extra milk in the fridge or freezer, Beck could have easily given Finn a bottle if the baby had been cranky and needed it.
"You ready for today?" Beck asks her as they approach the kitchen
"More than ready." Jade admits "I think it's time."
They've lined up five different apartments and townhouses to look at, with the intention of having one selected and paperwork signed by the end of the day. Whatever they end up choosing, they know won't be permanent and will only be for a year or two. Their careers will take off further and they'll be making more money, Beck will likely become more famous and need to be living in the privacy of his own home rather than somewhere communal, but for the time-being, something smaller and affordable will work for them.
With the help of their parents, they've been able to determine that their combined incomes will allow them to afford rent up to three thousand dollars a month while still being able to cover all of their other expenses as well. Both Beck and Jade would prefer to find something less than that, just to have some extra cash available if they were to need it, but they realize that in Los Angeles beggars can't really afford to be choosers.
"We're not asking you to leave." Kaitlyn points out "You could stay here with us a bit longer until you can afford an actual house."
She and Chris had been shockingly disappointed when Beck and Jade first mentioned wanting to explore the idea of moving out. As hectic as it has been, they've enjoyed having Jade close to them again, and they've certainly enjoyed having their grandsons around as well. They'll be watching both boys later while Beck and Jade are out house-hunting, not wanting them to be in the way.
"I know, Mom." Jade nods "We really appreciate everything that you've done to help us out, but...we're outgrowing the basement. Not to mention that we both have full-time, well-paying jobs. It's time."
"You know you'll always be welcome."
"We do." Beck smiles "And we appreciate that."
The first two apartments that the couple sees confirm for them that a townhouse is probably their best option. While the rent will be higher, the floor plans will be more spread out. With two young, but quickly growing boys, they're not sure that a cramped apartment is the best choice for their family. Even if each of the boys were to get their own bedroom, they would still need more open common spaces, like a kitchen and living room, for them to all spend time in together. None of the apartments that they've seen have been able to offer that.
"This looks promising..." Beck remarks as he and Jade walk hand-in-hand behind their leasing agent
They haven't even entered the townhome yet, but Beck is impressed by the small patches of grass on either side of the path leading up to the door. It would be somewhere for the boys to play, maybe kick a soccer ball around once they're old enough.
"Grass is always nice." Jade agrees with a laugh as they step inside "Oh, I like this."
The first floor is almost entirely open, with the kitchen giving way to a living area. If one of them were in the kitchen cooking, they would be able to see the boys playing not too far away, or one of them could be relaxing on the couch and talking to the other while they prepare everyone's lunches for the next day.
"The open-concept is becoming more and more popular these days." The leasing agent nods
"How many bedrooms?"
"Three bedrooms, two and a half baths." She tells them
"Mind if we take a look around?" Beck asks
"Go for it."
There's a half-bath off of the main floor with a toilet and a sink, which seems plenty reasonable. There's a small patio in the back off of sliding glass doors. It's fenced in, and wouldn't give the boys much room to play, but they'd likely be able to put a grill out there and a few chairs, where they could relax and share a glass of wine after a long day once they kids have gone to bed.
The bedrooms on the second floor are a bit on the smaller side, but neither Beck or Jade see that as a problem. Anything is an upgrade from all four of them sharing one room, or Beck and Jade not even having their own room at all currently. They don't plan on living wherever they end up choosing for more than two years, so at their oldest Liam and Finn would be four and three, respectively. They don't need luxuriously big bedrooms, just enough space for a bed and a dresser...maybe a few toys.
"S'not bad." Jade says to Beck as they exit the master bathroom "Definitely a step up from my mom's basement."
"Should we apply?" Beck asks her "Do you think we'd be able to live here?"
"I think we can, yeah." She nods "We should apply."
They'll likely be accepted if they do, both of them are making plenty enough to afford the rent and their credit is fine.
"Look at us, being grownups." Beck smiles, wrapping his arms around Jade's waist and pulling her in for a kiss "Buying a house and shit."
"We're renting." Jade reminds him "We'll buy in a few years."
"Still seems like a very grownup thing to do."
"Yeah." Jade agrees as she leans in to kiss him "You're right."
"Think he'll stay asleep?" Beck asks as they creep out of Liam's new bedroom
Their application for the townhouse had been accepted and they were able to move in within two weeks. While Kaitlyn and Chris had been sad to see them go, they had been happy for them and their family.
Upon moving in, they purchased a new toddler bed for Liam for his new 'big boy room'. While Beck and Jade found it adorable how excited Liam had been about his new bed, they also know it now gives him the ability to get up on his own. They worry about him waking Finn, who will now be sleeping in Liam's old crib in his own bedroom as well.
"I hope so." Jade sighs as she takes his hand, the two of them headed for their own bedroom "Something tells me we're going to be getting up a lot for the next few nights and putting him back to bed."
"And by the time he gets the hang of it, we'll get to start potty training him." Beck smirks "Not to mention that Finn still wakes up on occasion."
"Only on occasion." Jade shrugs "He's pretty close to sleeping through the night."
The almost four month old didn't really need much sleep training. He started sleeping through the night on his own almost consistently by the time he was three months, which was relieving to Beck and Jade as they were still trying to get into the routine of working full time whilst caring for two children under the age of two at the time.
"True."
Their townhouse is still pretty 'bare bones' as some might call it, they really only have the necessities. They didn't have many belongings of their own when they moved in, with most of the furniture they had been using belonging to Chris and Kaitlyn. In addition to Liam's new bed, they had also purchased a new mattress and bed frame for themselves, and a couch for the living room, along with a set of plates and silverware for the kitchen, and a set of pots and pans to cook with. Everything else they will slowly start to acquire as they are able to.
"Look at us..." Jade smiles as she flops down on the bed, Beck closing their bedroom door behind them "Our first night in our own house."
"Look at us." Beck smirks as he lays down beside her "Hey, real talk for a second?"
"Alright." She rolls over to face him "What's up?"
"I'm sorry we're going to bed in LA instead of New York."
"Beck..."
"No, seriously." Beck reaches out and takes her hand "I know how much New York meant to you, and how badly you wanted to stay there. I'm sorry that we couldn't, and I'm sorry that we're not back there yet."
"It doesn't make sense for us to be back there." Jade points out "Your job is here, my job is here. Our lives are here."
"It really doesn't bother you?"
"How could it?" Jade shrugs "If I had to pick between staying in New York, and having you and Liam and Finn...well, I'll pick my boys every time."
"We'll get back there one day." He promises her
"I know we will." She tells him as she squeezes his hand "But y'know what...if it takes us a little while longer than we anticipate...that's okay too. New York will always be there, we can never get this time with our kids back."
"You're right." Beck agrees, leaning over to kiss her "Hey, I have something for you."
"Oh?"
"I've had it for a while, actually." Beck admits as he rolls off of the bed and walks over to the closet, pulling one of his still partially-packed duffle bags out "I bought it with my first paycheck, I've just been waiting for the right time to give it to you."
"Well, now I'm even more intrigued..." Jade chuckles
Whatever it is, it's small. Beck is able to hold it in his hand as he tosses the duffle into the closet and closes the door again. He turns back to Jade, walking around to the opposite side of the bed so that he can stand in front of her.
"I should have done this a long time ago..." He admits, kneeling down in front of her "And I'm sorry that it took so long, but..."
He opens his hand to reveal a small, velvet box. He flips the lid open, revealing sparkling diamond ring inside.
"Beck..." Jade gasps "Are you...are you sure?"
She had come to terms with the fact that he might not be ready to propose for a very long time. After the conversation they had right before Finn was born, after they had fought, she had realized that he might want to wait until he was more stable in his career, once he felt that he had accomplished everything else that he had wanted to.
"I've never been so sure of anything in my life." He chuckles with a smile "Jade, I've known I was going to marry you since we were fourteen years old. I know we had our life mapped out, or at least we thought we did. There have been a few roadblocks and detours along the way...but I wouldn't change a damn thing about it. I love you, and I love our boys, more than anything else in this world. I love the life we've started building together, and I can't wait to continue building it. I can't wait to see where it takes us...where it takes us together. Will you marry me?"
"Yes." She nods, a grin spreading across her face "Yes, of course I will."
"Yeah?"
"Yeah."
Jade reaches out and takes Beck's face in her hands, pulling it closer to her as she leans in to kiss him. They both laugh as they break away, and he removes the ring from the box to place it on her finger. After he does so, she holds it out for them both to see, the two of them admiring the ring on her finger as the light catches it and allows it to shine.
"It's perfect." She admits "I love it."
A princess cut diamond, sitting on a halo of smaller diamonds, set on a silver ring. Jade will admit that she had never really given much thought to what kind of engagement ring she would one day want to wear, but now that she's seen this one...she feels like she would have picked it all along. As she had said...it's absolutely perfect.
"I love you." Beck tells her as he presses a kiss to her cheek, and then to her neck, and then her collarbone
"I love you too." She smiles, wrapping her arms around his neck as she lays back on the bed and pulls him on top of her "Wanna have some Mommy and Daddy time?"
"Absolutely I do." He chuckles, kissing her again "It's about time."
The proposal that I know everyone has been waiting for basically since the first chapter :)
Next chapter will be the epilogue! Thank you all so much for reading!
