This takes place a few days after the night Danny brought take out for dinner
Maria and the nanny chatted as they drove home from the pediatrician appointment for Elena. She was making all her physical milestones, was above average in height and weight, and just a bit advanced in developing language. Maria wanted her daughter to be bi-lingual and the nanny would switch between English and Spanish languages during the day. "I'm going to take you and Elena home, then I have a few errands to run before going to work. I'll call you before I leave the office. How does that sound?"
"That's fine. I have a new class to watch online and then two papers to write so once Elena is in bed I'll be working in my study room. Will you be home for dinner, or should I save something for you?" asked the nanny.
"I still have leftovers from the food that Danny brought over the other night. I'm sure there's enough there for you and Elena and me." Maria pulled her car up to the sidewalk in front of her home. The two women worked together to bring Elena, her diaper bag and stroller into the house and then Maria left, being sure the doors were locked.
"Reagan, my office now," yelled Lieutenant Gee. Danny blew out a big breath of air before getting up and walking toward his boss. "Close the door, Danny," Mike said. He waited for Danny to comply and then took a seat in front of his desk. "I just got a phone call from the Prosecutor's office. Seems Sam Evans was on his way to court, and he got away from the transport guards. Some new guy freaked out and let him escape."
Danny pulled out his cell phone and called Maria, but she didn't answer. He tried a second time, but the call still went to voicemail. He looked through his contacts but didn't have one for the nanny and was now getting more worried. He tried his partner one more time and she finally answered. "Maria, thank God, where are you? Where's Elena and the nanny?"
"I dropped them back at the house after her pediatrician appointment, I told you that's where I would be this morning. I have a few more things to do, then I'll be in. What's going on? You're scaring me!"
"I'm in Mike's office, he just got a call that Sam escaped on his way to the courthouse. How far are you from home?"
"With or without?"
"With. I'm leaving the precinct now."
"At least twenty minutes." Danny could hear the siren in the background.
"Call me before you go in the house. Be careful, we don't know where he is. If you can, just pick up Elena and the nanny and get out of there. See you soon." Danny ran out of the building, jumped in his squad car, hit the lights and siren and headed to Maria's home. Danny hung up the phone to concentrate on his driving. Mike Gee was calling his former boss, Sid Gormley, with an update and to start planning their next move.
"This is Lieutenant Gormley, I need captains from ESU and HNT at 1PP in ten minutes, no excuses. We'll meet in the commissioner's conference room. We have a possible hostage situation involving one of our detectives and her daughter and an employee. More information will be given when we meet. See you there." He walked up to Detective Baker's desk. "I need the boss now."
"He's on the phone right now." She stood up, walked around her desk and walked over to Frank's door. She knocked on the door and walked in. "Excuse me, sir, there's an emergency." Sid walked past Abby and stood in front of the desk. Frank took one look at his officer and ended his call. "I just received a call from Danny's boss, Mike Gee. The perp that was stalking Detective Baez a few days ago was arrested and sent to Rikers. He was on the way to court for a pre hearing meeting when he overcame the guards and escaped. The fear is that he's going back to her home and who knows what he's going to do. The nanny is home alone with the baby; the detective was out running a few errands before heading to her precinct. I've contacted ESU and HNT and they should be here shortly.
"Danny is on his way to the home of the detective and will probably get there before Detective Baez. Mike called the precinct where Baez lives and asked for two RMP's to be sent and see what they can tell us."
"So, we have no idea what is going on inside the house?"
"No, sir, but Danny should be there shortly."
"Call the 2 9, get Jamie and Eddie over there. They can help ESU with a floor plan of the house. We were all at the birthday party Detective Baez had for Elena not too long ago. Keep me updated."
"Yes, sir."
"Sid, use whatever it takes."
"May I take Abigail into the meeting and to the site?"
"Yes, tell her I agreed."
Frank paused for a moment to pray for the safety of his family then picked up the phone and called the police chaplain, Monsignor Donohue, to advise him his services might be needed and gave him the address. Now, all he could do was wait. Several minutes later Abigail told him they were leaving, and she would keep him updated.
