Chapter 7

The SUV swerved around on the roads following Steve Rogers who was running down the roads and down an alleyway. It came to a stop and Everleigh and Director Fury got out of the SUV looking at the Captain who was panting catching his breath.

"At ease, soldier." Director Fury called out as he moved towards the entrance of the alleyway that Steve had gone down.

Everleigh pursed her lips together wondering what had happened that caused him to take out some of the Shield agents and run through town and cause a mess for them.

Steve whipped sound looking at Nick and Everleigh who were at the entrance of the alley. Steve looked at them with his brows furrowed. "Who are you?"

"Colonel Fury, Director of SHIELD. And this is Agent Everleigh Vincen. You would have known us as the Special Scientific Reserve."

Steve's eyes narrowed looking at the two of them. This was the first reassuring thing that he had heard since he had woken up . "Where am I?"

"Roundabout 34th and 5th." Everleigh said as she crossed her arms her black uniform moving with her how she moved. Her brows furrowed as she saw the confusion come across his face. Honestly she didn't really blame him for being so confused. After all he was way out of his time by 70 years of sleep.

Steve looked at them confused.

Fury nodded over his shoulder at the Empire state building above them.

Steve gaped at the building.

Fury then waved over a couple of MP's to block the alley.

They stood at attention once they got there.

"Sorry about that little show back there. See, there's no precedent for what you've been through. We couldn't tell how delicate your mental state might be. We thought it best to break it to you slowly."

"Break what?"

"You've been asleep, Captain. For almost seventy years."

Steve looked around, stunned. This was not his home and he could tell that this wasn't his home any more. What had happened. "Seventy…" He took a breath. "The World of the Future."

"Well, thanks to you, there is one." Everleigh said explaining to him there was a future for them all thanks to him.

Steve eyed the two of them. "What about the war? Did we win?"

"Hell, yes. Unconditional surrender, baby. And taking down HYDRA was a big part of that."

Steve blanched at the thought. "How am I...not dead?"

"To be perfectly honest, we're not sure yet. My docs day it's some kind of suspended animation. Dr. Erskine's formula, the extreme cold...I can't break it down for you on a cellular level, but you

haven't aged a day since that plane went down."

Steve looked down, overwhelmed by the whole new world.

"You don't mind my asking, what gave us away back there?"

"What? Oh. Bob Chipman was traded for Eddie Stanky during the '44 season. He's with the Cubs now. Or...was." Steve mumbled out the last bit looking down, pursing his lips together into a thin line.

"I know it's a lot to swallow. But the world's not as different as it looks. There's still work to be done…" He looked at Steve with a pointed look. "Soldier's work."

Steve looked up at Fury's eyes.

Fury then signals to one of the MP's.

The MP brought forward a case.

Fury opened it, revealing Steve's battered shield. "The world could still use a man like you, Cap."

Steve touched the shield remembering everything that he had done in the 40s'.

"Take your time. God knows if anybody's earned it, you have. All the same…" Fury offered his hand and Steve took it. "There's a place for you on the team."

Steve rubbed his head as many things came back to him.

"You sure you're alright?"

"Yeah. It's just…" Steve took a breath thinking. "I have a date."

Everleigh nodded her head softly in understanding, knowing that this was hard for him to understand everything that was happening around him. "I know it is a lot to take in Captain Rogers, but we're here for you every step of the way." Everleigh said, offering him a small smile.

Steve looked over at the young woman wondering if she meant what she said.

"Now come back to the facility and we'll talk about everything." She said, patting his arm softly before slowly turning to go to the SUV that she had gotten out of with Director Fury. She took a soft breath and got into it. She felt bad that Steve woke up in a time period that he didn't know anything about. But she knew now that Director Fury was making a team up of heroes to keep the world protected just in case if the world was punged into darkness or something happened again like when Thor had caused problems with his brother Loki leveling a city in New Mexico.

Director Fury got into the SUV and looked over at Everleigh with his good eye. "You handled him well. He's riding back to the compound."

Everleigh nodded her head firmly. "I'm sure that he'll need someone to watch over him to make sure that he fits in… well kind of… I am sure one of our agents can keep an eye on him… under cover."

"Interesting choice, Agent Vincen."

Everleigh nodded her head as they began to drive back towards the base. She had to admit that her life at Shield was becoming weirder and weirder.
