Flameout – Chapter 6
After her initial altercation with Frankie, Stella had been lurking around the hospital avoiding him and trying to find out as much about Jane and her condition as possible. She knew she had to figure out a way to get past the police officer that had been posted at her door. She knew Frankie would leave his sister's room at some point and she wanted to be ready when that moment arose.
Stella also had to track down some information about that woman Nikki. She wanted to make sure that she didn't interfere with her plans to win over Jane. When she had left the hospital earlier, she had planned to find out everything she could about Nikki and her past relationship with Jane.
As Nikki had left the hospital, Stella followed her and took down the license plate of the Lincoln Town Car that had picked her up. She had a few connections and she would use them to find out who exactly this Nikki person was.
When Nikki initially left the hospital, she was pissed as hell. Frankie Rizzoli was not her boss. He couldn't tell her what to do and she wasn't going to let him win this time. She was determined to see Jane. She had a car service pick her up and take her to her hotel. She checked in and figured she would go back to the hospital and try to see Jane again after she called home to Boston. She was not giving up on Jane. They were just on a break after all and Jane certainly would want to see her. They were supposed to be getting married in about six months.
Mark answered the call on the second ring, "Hey babe, how is Jane?"
"Mark, don't call me that. People already think that we are back together because we have been seen out clubbing together." Nikki said with venom.
"Aren't we though? I mean you have been sleeping at my place since you and Jane stopped seeing each other."
"No Mark, Jane is my fiancée and I still plan on marrying her in a few months. We are on a break, she needed some time, that doesn't mean that we broke up."
"I don't think Jane feels that way. You should have seen the look on her face a few weeks ago at the club."
"Wait, you didn't tell me that she saw us at the club." Nikki was pissed now, she had no idea that Jane had seen her out with Mark. She tried to go to different clubs that she didn't go to with Jane.
"I thought you saw her. She slammed her beer bottle down on the table and it shattered. Everyone looked at her as she hightailed it out of the club, pushing through people as she went."
"No Mark, I didn't. I need to go." With that Nikki hung up the phone, she didn't even let Mark say goodbye. She called the car service and then went into the closet to pick out some new clothes so that she could change. She was going back to the hospital, she needed to straighten this mess out. She was determined, she wasn't going to let Frankie Rizzoli stop her from seeing her fiancée.
Nikki arrived back at the hospital and saw all of the Rizzoli family in the waiting room. Angela was in tears and was being comforted by her youngest son, Tommy. Nikki didn't care for him, he always gave her dirty looks. They had some of the same friends and Tommy thought his sister could do a lot better than the likes of her and he told both Nikki and Jane that.
None of the family saw her so she slipped out and figured she would come back Sunday morning before they arrived. She knew what time visiting hours were and she would be there before then so that she could sneak in and see Jane. She was not going to leave Syracuse until she saw Jane and made sure that their wedding was on track.
Sunday Morning
Select members of the Air National Guard and a few volunteers had worked through the night to find all the pieces of the F-16 and piece it back together. They worked alongside members of the accident investigation team to reconstruct the F-16. There were a few pieces that didn't seem to fit anywhere but they didn't toss them away. They were mixed in with the wreckage and could be a clue as to what caused the engine to flameout.
The team members did not find any small bones in the wreckage. Sometimes with previous aircraft accidents some bones of birds had been found in the engine. However, they couldn't rule out that the engine flameout was caused by a bird. They needed to figure out what the few unidentified pieces of debris found with wreckage were. Each piece of unidentified debris had a team member assigned to attempt to find out exactly what it was.
Ace went to the hangar where the accident investigation team was housed and let it be known that he wanted to work with the team. He spoke to the chief investigator and was told that because Jane was his wingman, he would not be allowed to officially participate in the investigation. However, they would let him observe.
Jane and Ace had attended several seminars that had been put on by senior accident investigation team members. They knew that every accident investigation team had to have a pilot assigned to the team. As some of the top pilots at their base they knew that they might be selected to serve on a team at some point and wanted to know everything they could know to help themselves if that occasion ever arose. They hoped it wouldn't but they liked being prepared.
Maura had scribbled a few things on Jane's chart and then quickly informed Jane, "I will be back later to check on you." After Maura left Jane's hospital room, she immediately went to her office. She was working herself into a panic attack. She needed to speak to Amelia. She needed to inform her about the conversation she had just had with Jane. She hoped that Amelia would be able to help her.
Once she was in her office, she sat down at her desk and picked up her cell phone. She called Amelia. Amelia groggily answered her phone on the third ring. Maura didn't seem to notice that Amelia was half asleep when she had said, "Hello!"
Maura quickly told her, "Amelia, it was so strange. Jane knew about Skye, Charlie and Bella. I had never shared details of my personal life with her. You know me, I do not divulge personal information about myself with my patients. I am a professional, I just met her yesterday. How can she know so much about me?"
Maura was talking so fast, Amelia was having a hard time keeping up with her. Maura was a little freaked out. Amelia had jumped out of bed and was busy selecting the clothes she would wear and gathering her things so she could get to the hospital as soon as possible. She had planned to sleep in for another hour or two but she realized that she needed to get to Maura as soon as possible and find out what was going on.
"Maura, please calm down. I am sure there is a reasonable explanation for this." Amelia said trying to convince Maura and herself. Amelia knew head injuries sometimes caused people to act differently. First, Jane had vision problems and now it seemed as though she might be some sort of a visionary.
"I hope so, I am a little freaked out by the situation." Maura admitted. Her heart was still racing. She knew she had not shared such personal information with her new patient, she hadn't shared personal information with some of the staff she had worked with for years. It just wasn't her nature.
"I will take a shower and come by and check on Jane. I will let you know when I arrive at the hospital. How is her eyesight today?" Amelia asked as she walked into the bathroom to take her shower. She wanted to find out as much information as she could before arriving at the hospital.
"I did not ask her. I was so freaked out about when she told me about her dream. I finished with her chart and left the room." Maura felt guilty for not thoroughly checking on Jane. It was job to check in on her patients and after hearing what Jane had said, she excused herself. She had never done that, never. It was so out of character for her and that also had her concerned.
"It's okay Maura, I will look into this for you. I will see you in about half an hour, okay?"
"Thank you, Amelia. I think I will just hang out in my office until you get here." They said their goodbyes and ended the phone call. Maura closed her eyes and put her head down on her desk.
Meanwhile back in Jane's hospital room, Frankie couldn't help himself, "So Janie, you're having dreams about the doctor, huh?"
Jane just put her hands up to her head and told him, "It seemed so real Frankie, not like a dream but rather a recent memory. I didn't know that she had children. How did I know that? I barely know the woman. This is all confusing." Jane told him as she put her hands down and closed her eyes. She tried to remember other details about her dream.
Jane smiled thinking about lying in bed with Maura but she wanted to remember other details. She wanted to remember details about the children and the nanny. Things that she didn't know before her dream, not that she knew about lying in bed with Maura but she could imagine that. That thought pleased her, as she wouldn't mind getting to know the beautiful doctor better.
Frost had just sat there listening to the Rizzoli siblings. He was wondering how the heck Jane knew that Maura had children and what her nanny's name was. Jane was full of surprises and he wanted to see how this one played out.
A few minutes after hanging up her call with Amelia, Maura heard a knock on her door and quickly composed herself before getting up and answering the door. "Nina, so nice to see you. I thought you were off today."
"I am, but I had to come by for a meeting and I saw the light on in your office so I thought I would check in on you. You look like you just woke up, are you okay?"
Maura spent a few minutes explaining Jane's dream to her and how she had called Amelia. She was going to meet with Amelia later that afternoon but with this new situation she needed Amelia now. Nina was surprised that Jane knew about Maura's children, she barely knew about Maura's children and she had known Maura for over seven years. Maura was a very private person, Nina knew that she would not have shared such information with a basic stranger.
Nina sat with her friend and tried to comfort her while they waited for Amelia to arrive. She tried to comfort Maura as best she could. She put her arm around her and Maura rested her head on her shoulder. Her heart rate seemed to calm down. Nina looked at watch and knew that Amelia would be there any minute. She prayed that Amelia would be able to provide some answers for her friend. She hated seeing Maura like this.
Nikki came back to the hospital and had acquired a nurse's uniform and walked right up to Jane's room. The officer looked at her and smiled. Nikki was beautiful and she smiled back at him and he opened the door and let her in.
Frost, Frankie and Jane all looked at the door when it opened. Jane was the first to speak, "Oh hell no, get out of here." Frankie and Frost immediately rushed the door and pushed her out.
Frankie gave the officer at the door a fiery look and asked him, "Why did you let her in the room?"
He looked at Frankie who was still struggling with Nikki and replied, "I thought she was a nurse."
"No, she is my sister's former fiancée and she is not on the approved list." Frankie said as he cuffed Nikki and sat her down in the officer's chair. Frost had gone back inside to check on Jane.
"Frost, what the hell, why is Nikki here?"
"From what Frankie told me, she and Stella arrived yesterday and tried to see you."
"Stella was here also?"
"Yes, I guess Frankie thought he had handled the situation but apparently not if Nikki is still in Syracuse. He told me that he told her that she had no business being here and that she should go back to Boston with her boyfriend, Mark."
"Crap, I thought I had her out of my life. Has Stella been back?"
"Not that I know of, but she lives here and from what Frankie said she is a paramedic so I am sure she will come back at some point when she thinks that coast is clear. She said she is your girlfriend."
"Well, that is a lie. I have no girlfriend or fiancée. I am not seeing any women right now. I am concentrating on me and my jobs."
"You better tell your brain that, because I hear the heart monitor every time a certain blonde doctor comes in the room."
"Hush, Frost. I am going to close my eyes now and go back to sleep. Before you know it my mom will be here and I might have to take more pain meds so she will go back to the hotel. I can't handle more than half an hour of her fussing over me."
"I know, you know that you are lucky to have a mother that cares so much about you though, right?"
"Yes, I know, I just need smaller doses of her fussing over me."
"Has Ace been by? I would like to see him."
"He called me to check in on you. I gave him my number as I told him that I would be staying with you until you leave this place. He said that he is going to check in with the Accident Investigation Team and see if they will let him help out or at least observe."
"That sounds like Ace, he would want to see what is happening and help if he could. Okay, a nap is sounding really nice. I am going to close my eyes, maybe you can help Frankie get rid of Nikki."
"Yes, I guess I shouldn't let him have all the fun taking care of your women."
"They are not my women, not anymore anyways."
Frost got up to go check on Frankie and couldn't resist throwing one more comment in, "Yes, you got a new woman to be dreaming about."
Jane wished she had something to throw at him as he walked out the door. Jane told herself, 'I am not going to let Nikki or Stella ruin my recovery. I need to get out of this place, it is too easy for them to get to me here in the hospital, but I still want to see my beautiful doctor.' With that thought Jane fell asleep. Within minutes she was dreaming and thinking of a very beautiful trauma doctor.
